EMCal Installation • Executive summary

– All readout hardware on SM is complete (at Grenoble)

• FEE crates, FEE cards, Cooling Manifolds, LED system, LV and HV cables, GTL buses, (RCUs)…

– All 6 SMs will be tested at P2 (SXL2) prior to installation

• Area has been prepared

– All cabling has been pre-installed on CalFrame• “Simply” need to connect SMs up after installation

– Main effort will be commissioning• Big task will be DCS work

– Should be relatively easy for SMA2 and SMC2 since they are on the same LV service group as SM0 and SM1

EMCal Installation • SM Testing @ SXL2

– All SMs will be re-tested at SXL2 with LEDs prior to installation

– Why re-test?• Plan to install “DTC” cards on all FEE cards prior to

installation– FEE cards of remaining 6 SMs have been modified with

installation of pins/sockets needed to mount DTC boards– Requires FEE cards to be removed to install DTC board

» DTC readout will be “ready” to use with “simple” cable connection after removing GTL bus and RCUs

– DTCs expected early December

• TRUs need to be installed and tested– TRUs expected in early December only– Installation of TRUs requires removal of DCS, GTL bus, etc.

EMCal FEE Card Modification • FEE card modification for DTC

board – Insert and solder 4 pins and 4 sockets– Completed for 6 SMs to be installed– Plan to modify the FEE boards of 4

SMs already installed also (!)• Some channels suspected of no HV

bias to be repaired

Insert 4 pins

Insert 4 sockets

EMCal FEE DTC Card• DTC board to be mounted on all FEE

boards – Passive while using GTL+RCU readout

• To enable DTC readout: – Reprogram FEE firmware

• 1-2 hrs/SM

– Connect cable to GTL bus (as shown)• Needed for FEE card enable and ALTRO

clock

– Connect RJ45 LVDS cable to SRU module – Free of RCU+DCS system!!!

• More later…

November 8, 2010 EMCal & DCal Electronics, T.Awes 7

EMCal Installation• Concerns?

– DTC cards• Mounting of the DTC boards prior to insertion of SMs is not essential,

– But it will be most convenient to do this prior to installation in L3

• Delivery expected by early December

– Removal of FEE boards from SMA0, SMA1, SMC0, SMC1 for modification, DTC installation, and any necessary repairs will be done as soon as DTC boards are available.

– TRUs • After testing in laboratory it still required some effort to debug TRUs in SMs.

– It will be most convenient to do this prior to installation in L3

– RCUs: This is the major concern…• We need 2x10 working RCUs to operate EMCal• Currently we have 37 RCUs in possession of EMCal, but only 12 confirmed to be

100% functional. – We will need to make a concerted effort at RCU repair– TPC has said there are no more spare RCUs available (to us)– This is one of the major reasons for the SRU readout upgrade…

• None of this will give reason to delay SM installation

Page 8: EMCal/DCal Electronics November 08, 2010 Outline: EMCal Installation DCal Preparations Readout Upgrade - (Presentation by Hans)

November 8, 2010 EMCal & DCal Electronics, T.Awes 8

EMCal Installation• We want to be able to connect SM to services immediately after

insertion of each SM and test to confirm that the SM is fully functional

• All services are ready to connect to SM– Minor exception LED LV and trigger cables must be installed

• LED system was not finalized until after CalFrame was installed.• Can be installed in December

• Hardware– Service group A0-2 and C0-2 LV and HV ready– Need to install a LV module and 2 HV modules for service groups A3-4

and C3-4 (and finish a HV multi-pin connector) • Can be done in December - everything is at CERN

• DCS must be upgraded to configure and monitor new SMs– Jiro arrives in December to begin upgrade, Kithsiri also in January

• AMORE must be upgraded to provide monitoring histograms of all 10 SMs– Can be started immediately after end of run

• Francesco?

EMCal DCS Modifications

• Existing DCS control of FEE via scripts executed via ssh– 2 DCS boards per SM, with 10SM -> 20 DCS windows! + BusyBox

• Direct communication has been convenient for commissioning• During normal ALICE operation this is done “under the hood” of PVSS• EMCal functionally fully compliant, but technically not compliant as PVSS-DCS

communication should be done via DIM server – Jiro and Kirthsiri may work towards this in January

Page 11: EMCal/DCal Electronics November 08, 2010 Outline: EMCal Installation DCal Preparations Readout Upgrade - (Presentation by Hans)

November 8, 2010 EMCal & DCal Electronics, T.Awes 11

EMCal Commissioning Schedule• December:

– Complete remaining hardware installations in P2: LV, HV modules, LED cables– Update DCS to be ready to control additional 6 SMs– Update AMORE to be ready to monitor pedestal and LED data from all 10 SMs and

check SMs as they are installed– Find/Fix sufficient RCUs for 10 SMs (starting now)– Complete TRU production– Complete DTC production– Install TRUs and DTCs on SMs and re-test SMs with LEDs in sequence of expected

installation– If DTCs available and time allows - Remove FEE cards from installed SMs to make

modifications and mount DTCs and fix any bad channels

• January:– Evenings(?): Connect each SM to services after installation. Test SM and full SM

groups.– Complete removal of FEE cards of installed SMs for repair, modification, DTC

installation.– Much etc, etc, etc to get everything functional for collisions.

Trigger Considerations

• EMCal TRU to be used unchanged.– Jyvaskyla agrees to provide DCal TRUs

• EMCal STU to be used unchanged (probably), separate STU for DCal.– Case 1) PHOS TRU input to STU, DCal STU provides L1 shower

and Jet triggers from DCal+PHOS• Requires PHOS TRU to send FastOR data to STU

– PHOS TRUs cannot run as full 40MHz– PHOS TRU upgrade planned for 2011-2012 shutdown

• Requires 36 STU inputs for 3 sectors of DCal (12 TRUs) + PHOS (24 TRUs)

– Okay since STU has 40 inputs– Would require modified DCal TRU algorithm

– Case 2) DCal input only to DCal STU• STU provides L1 shower (and L0 OR) only to CTP

• EMCal and DCal triggers OR’d at CTP

November 8, 2010 EMCal & DCal Electronics, T.Awes 30

EMCal/Dcal Readout Upgrade• Concerns with the existing EMCal GTL Bus based Readout

– GTL chips no longer in production• Likely insufficient supply for DCal FEE production

– Limitation of Serial Readout• Single FEE GTL problems can disable full GTL Bus (1/4SM) or RCU (1/2SM)• Readout time 10x FEE readout

– Minimum deadtime for p+p with Zero Suppression on FEE = 250 s– Minimum deadtime for Pb+Pb likely to be >625 s (1.6kHz max.)

– EMCal trigger• EMCal L0 Trigger must be inhibited (in TRU) during FEE readout due to noise

induced on FastOR lines

– RCU support• Production and RCUs no longer supported by TPC

– Insufficient RCU supply -> New RCU production will be required for DCal» Sufficient GTL chips for DCal RCU production?

• Firmware not under EMCal control– Requires TPC support for EMCal/PHOS versions

– Complexity • Requires 4 GTL boards, 2 RCUs, 2 DCS, 2DDL, + associated cables per SM

Page 31: EMCal/DCal Electronics November 08, 2010 Outline: EMCal Installation DCal Preparations Readout Upgrade - (Presentation by Hans)

November 8, 2010 EMCal & DCal Electronics, T.Awes 31

FEE Upgrade Design

• Replace 2 RCU+DCS+SIU + 4 GTL with single SRU – Replace serial readout of 10 cards/GTL bus with parallel readout of all

FEE/TRU boards• Minimum readout speed ~30s, maximum readout speed (HI) ~100s

– FEE-SRU communication via LVDS serial lines a la TRU-STU• LCU was effectively a prototype SRU to test all functionality

– SRU-LDC communication via gigabit ethernet• Planned ALICE upgrade path• Compatible with existing DDL readout fibers

• New FEE (and FEE upgrade daughter card) must add LVDS communication channel– TRU already has this capability

EMCal/DCal SRS Upgrade• Plan & progress:

– Upgrade existing FEE boards with “small cheap” daughter card (DTC) to allow all FEE & TRUs to be readout with SRUs rather than RCUs.

• Prototype DTC board was made in March 2010– Tested with EMCal LCU as SRU emulator to demonstrate concept and necessary

performance of DTC-SRU link

• First pre-production DTC boards (shown) installed on FEE and tested with LCU– DTC PCBs expected next week, all components@CERN to start full DTC production

immediately - expect delivery end of November.

EMCal/DCal SRS Upgrade• Plan & progress:

– SRU pre-production underway• 11 SRU PCBs produced in China (Wuhan)• Full SRU order has been placed (need 16 SRUs EMCal+DCal)

– All components for 8 SRUs at CERN

– Two SRUs will be produced and tested immediately (perhaps next week)

» If okay production of 8 SRUs will be completed (end of November)

» If layout problem, then modify PCB layout for new production

– Order PCBs, components for production of remaining SRUs (ready early 2011)

EMCal/DCal SRS Upgrade• Plan & progress:

– DTC-SRU Firmware development (&TRU-SRU) is a major task• Fan Zhang (Wuhan) @ CERN for 1 year to work on this project (as part of SRS

for RD51)• FEE and TRU Board Controller firmware must be upgraded to use new protocol

for Data, Control, and Trigger via DTC board– Fan is also author of EMCal FEE board controller firmware

– TRU BC firmware will need to be upgraded by Jiri

• Plan for shutdown (ambitious!):– All DTCs to be installed on FEE

boards by end of 2010-11 installation

– Switch one EMCal Group (e.g. SMC3& SMC4) over to SRS readout by end of 2010-11 installation

• Insanely ambitious!• DTC(TRU)-SRS system must be fully

functional– Firmware development is already

underway

EMCal/DCal Readout Upgrade

• Plan:– EMCal to switch from RCU to SRS readout in groups of “quadrants”

(LV groups)• This can be done in about 2 days per group

• Can be done throughout 2011 run during Machine Stop periods– EMCal operated with mixed readout methods– Perhaps start 2011 run with one group in SRS readout mode

• Requires:– Removal of GTL+RCU+DCS– Installation of SRS module: mounting, cabling– Connection of DTC boards to GTL bus and SRS, and TRU to SRS– Reprogramming of FEE and TRU Board Controllers– Switch from ALICE DDL readout to Gigabit ethernet @ LDC– Switchover of FEE&TRU control from DCS board to Gigabit ethernet
