We are proud to introduce the EMCup. During the past 8 years, this prestigious competition amongst the best Hotel Management
Schools in Europe has evolved into a well-established event.
Participating students not only represent their school while working
on academic assignments, the main focus is on making a difference
with their vision and ideas. The EMCup challenges them to think out
of the box about a real life topic and is the perfect possibility to meet,
share visions and build relationships with industry professionals.
Ask well respected hotel management school alumni how they have
been able to accomplish their success, and the majority will include
‘network’ in their answer. Therefore, an important focus of the
competition is creating networking moments, not only for students,
but also for deans, coaches and hospitality professionals. That is why
the true value of the EMCup lies not in the competition itself, but
around it.
Each year, a large variety of companies join the EMCup business
jury to experience the motivation and innovation of the participating
students first hand. And each year, their enthusiasm grows!
Because by sharing ideas, and by feeding them with ideas and input
of others, valuable business ideas are born.

The EMCup is aimed at ‘I-do-dare students’, those who stand out
from the crowd and show courage, entrepreneurship and a great
level of commitment. It offers students the chance to make a
difference with their vision and ideas, and challenges them to think
out of the box about a real life topic. Not only the quality, knowledge
and creativity of the students claim to be the reason of the success
of the EMCup, networking is also a great contribution.
The competition consists of two phases; the pre-competition phase
and the competition itself in Maastricht, The Netherlands. During
the pre-competition phase, the students prepare themselves
thoroughly by collecting information and writing an academic paper
on the theme.
The competition days themselves focus on presentation skills,
quick thinking, content and creativity. A business jury, composed of
industry professionals representing various aspects of hospitality,
judges the teams and provides them with feedback. Networking
between the business jury members and participating students is
facilitated and the deans have valuable time to interact and share
opinions.
The goal of the EMCup is to create and build long-lasting relationships,
provide hands on experience, open up the horizon for education,
build a bridge between schools and companies and connect young
professionals to the industry.
We believe to have the right formula for success and are proud of our
long list of participating schools and business jury representatives.
What is the EMCup?
The EMCup is the annual competition amongst the best European Hotel Management Schools. The competition, an initiative of HotelloTOP (the networking organisation for alumni of International Hospitality Management Schools), and co-creator Mise en Place, has grown tremendously since the competitions’ foundation in 2009. Year after year, a growing number of schools chooses to participate.

If you want to be creative and innovative, if you want to challenge yourself and share your knowledge, if you want to be a part of something big and meet people who share the same passion as you do, then join the EMCup! It will be an experience of a lifetime.
Having the opportunity to join EMCup 2015 was one of the best
experiences that we could make so far in our young careers in the hospitality industry. We are proud to share with everyone the impressions that
we had in the unique environment of Maastricht. Together with all the other enthusiastic participants we had the chance to share our knowledge,
experiences, work together as a group and network with people from the industry. During the whole competition phase, the preparation and the
competition days itself, one thing was always highly important for us, that we stay ourselves, have fun and make the best out of it. The combination
of straightforward, calm, open minded and focused mind-sets helped us to make it that far at the EMCup 2015. The EMCup is a great opportunity
to not only show what you have learned, however also to use that knowledge to create something new. For us the competition was not focused
on winning, more about meeting people, networking, show our passion and love for hospitality. We want to thank everyone again for making this
year’s EMCup such a special event, the teams for taking part and the organisation for creating an inspiring competition.

The EMCup was a fantastic experience in many ways. We had the chance to put the knowledge we gathered during our years of academic study and, for some, our internships to the test, in a competitive setting. But in the end it was not really about competition, we all made unforgettable memories and experiences, as well as friends, all of which will help us develop our careers and ourselves personally.
Getting to know all of the amazing people, organisers, judges and participants alike, was truly a unique opportunity in such a friendly and familiar
setting. In conjunction with the FXE conference, we had a fantastic networking platform, as well as discovering the latest trends and innovations
in our industry. The FXE’s speakers were also a fantastic treat. I would recommend the EMCup to future participants and their schools, to really
measure and appreciate what they are learning and teaching respectively, and the chance to see how their “competition” is doing. Networking and
binding is another reason, but finally fun is certainly the most important reason. This competition is truly a challenge worth taking. To all future
participants, we can only say: prepare for an intense couple of days!

The EMCup is definitely something we won’t forget in our lives! Imagine you are travelling to a city in another country to take part in a competition and what awaits you is totally different from what you expected. Students from all over Europe with the same interests - the hotel and tourism industry.
The weekend in Maastricht was so awesome, we nearly forgot about the competition itself. We made so many friends that we are still in contact
with and for us, this is what made the weekend so special - the people. We were all on the same level although the competition was still going
on. Talking, laughing and having fun with the other contestants was the best part of the agenda!
However, we wouldn’t have made 3rd place without our coach. Thanks Andrew for motivating us and being part of this wonderful experience.
We can’t recall any other event where we got to know so many interesting professionals from the hospitality industry. The EMCup provided the
possibility for networking and socializing, establishing contacts that will actually boost our careers.

What a great experience to see talented students perform greatly at the European Mise en Place Cup!
It was an honor to moderate the event and to be in close contact with the participating students. We believe that the new generation
has to decide on the future and the EMCup is the perfect platform to do so! These future entrepreneurs, being aware of new trends and
technologies, are the ones who can best predict their and our future.
During the competition, all students gave their best and made it possible for us to be part of their development. Through an interactive
workshop the students were challenged to evaluate their own behavior. We gave them insights into how to further develop certain skills,
strengthening their ability to work in a team. It was great to see how they implemented this behavioral model right away.
Above all, we will remember the amazing energy within the teams; fun and silliness combined with the eagerness to win were the road
to success. We had a great time!

Theme 2016: Surfing the Silver Wave
“The Agenda for the Future”, consisting of the 7 pillars; Water, Power, Food, Pollution, Changing Markets, Health & Care and Education, has been a topic during the EMCup for a few years now. We all know that the world population is expected to grow to 9 billion in 2050, but do we also know the demographics of this population and the influence this has on our industry?
The ageing of the population is one of the most important trends
determining the living and working conditions of the future. Within 35
years, there will be more people alive older than 60 than there will be
people younger than 15. During most of the 21st century, the people
over 60 will be the fastest-growing consumer group in the world.
This “Agequake” influences the business models of various industries
such as health & care, retail, technology and hospitality. Luckily, it also
brings plenty of opportunities!
Research by Barclays shows that the over 65s added £37 billion to the
UK economy through spending on the Hospitality & Leisure sector
in 2014. They contributed over a third (36%) more than the average
consumer and 27% more than the 35 to 54 year olds, who are the
second biggest spending generation. Despite this, the report reveals
that the UK Hospitality & Leisure Sector has missed out on at least
£16 billion in additional revenues by underestimating the spending
power of this generation in the last year.
It’s time to understand the needs of the ageing population, so our
industry can cater to this important age group! It is an extraordinary
business opportunity, for those who dare to look ahead and make
timely adjustments. And that is exactly what the 2015 EMCup will
challenge you to think about!

Hosting City: Maastricht
We invite you to Maastricht! A truly European city, known around the world for its hospitable character. Not only was the important “Treaty of Maastricht” signed here in 1992, the city itself is located at an international crossroads and cities such as Brussels, Liège, Aachen, Cologne and Düsseldorf are within an hour’s journey.
A city with Spanish and Roman ruins, offering sophisticated food and
drinks, French and Belgian twists in the architecture – are we still in
The Netherlands? Located on the border between The Netherlands
and Belgium, Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in The Netherlands,
which is reflected in the beautiful old architecture, from medieval town
ramparts, to cobblestone paving of alleys and streets, seventeenth
century facades and a Roman bridge. Located in the southernmost tip
of The Netherlands, this city has a reputation of being a little foreign
even in its own country.
Ceramics, paper and glass have dominated the city’s economy for
decades. Nowadays the most important industries in Maastricht are
the financial and business servic-
es industry (19.4%), trade/hotel
and catering industry (19.4%)
and the education/health care
sector (31.4%). The city has also
developed strongly because of
the presence of a University and
a College of Higher Education.

Although Maastricht is not a very big city (125.000 inhabitants),
it is usually buzzing with people day and night, many of which are
students. There are hundreds of shops, bars, cafés and restaurants
– Maastricht has the highest café density of The Netherlands: 1 café
per 350 inhabitants versus 1 per 900 on average. One thing about
Maastricht is indisputable: it is a city with a vigorously European out-
look that promotes itself as a nexus of lifestyle, hospitality, knowledge
and culture!
Maastricht boasts over 130 international institutes. Although their
activities are quite varied, they have one thing in common: thanks to
their extensive and vibrant networks, Maastricht is in intimate daily
contact with the entire world. The perfect city for the EMCup!
“The Maastricht Treaty” - February 7th 1992 - The NetherlandsMaastricht gained international fame as the host of the European Summit of 1992, where the “Treaty of Maastricht” was adopted as the formal foundation of the European Union. Being one of the original members and founders of the European Community, the Dutch government arranged a ceremony inside the Provincial Government Buildings on the Meuse, for representatives from the twelve member states of the European Community.Iit has become known, as the birthplace of the European Union, European citizenship, and the single European currency.

HotelloTOP and the European Mise en Place Cup are initiatives of Servicecenter 4Hospitality. Servicecenter 4Hospitality (S4H) offers a unique and extended network for companies as well as professionals who are active within the hospitality industry, to exchange thoughts, do business and share knowledge.
Hospitality is the foundation of our organisation and is incorporated
in everything that we do and express as a network company.
We are the linking pin within 4 areas: HOTEL, EDUCATION,
FOODSERVICE and CATERING. Our primary objective is to provide all
kinds of services to hospitality related businesses, with the goal to
make connections and to facilitate networking. We aim to create the
largest international networking platform for the hospitality industry
in Europe, in order to stimulate and increase business. We intend to
reach this goal by:
• Maintaining, assembling and optimising existing networks
• Developing new initiatives and connecting them to other networks
• Enthusing young professionals for, and introducing them to,
the hospitality industry
• Offering services and knowledge to support others
With this in mind we will support you throughout this competition
with knowledge and experience. We will assist you with the pre-
assignments and cases, and answer any questions that you may have
leading up to the competition, as well as during the competition days.

to fill out the MEPS scan, which will be used during the competition days. Further, each team needs to create a creative introduction movie (max. 1 minute). These two assignments are not included in the official grading. Competition day 1The first competition day is about getting to know each other. Networking is the key component. The students will take part in an interactive training session moderated by Q-Staff, to optimally prepare them for the day ahead. Competition day 2During the second day, the official part of the competition takes place and the teams receive Assignment 2B and 3. Assignment 2B – Pitch Academic PaperEach team has to present the findings of their academic paper (Assignment 2A), during a pitch of maximum 2 minutes. This pitch will be presented on stage. Weight: 15%. Assignment 3 – CaseEach team will receive a case to solve, related to the theme of the EMCup. Their findings have to be pitched before the business jury. Weight: 50%.
CriteriaTo participate in the EMCup, the following criteria have to be met• The Hotel Management School needs to be located in Europe• Each school sends one team of min. 4, max. 5 students & 1 or 2 coaches**To select the team members, the EMCup organisation suggests to hold an internal competition.
Preparation PhasePrior to the competition days, each team has to prepare four assignments. Two of these are included in the judging, and compose 35% of the total score. The definite assignments, including detailed information and deadlines, will be sent to the teams after the registration deadline Assignment 1 – Rumour around the BrandThe students have to promote their school, their team and the EMCup, by creating ‘Rumour around the Brand’ via social media. Weight: 10%. Assignment 2A – Academic PaperEach team has to write a paper of maximum 5 pages, related to the theme ‘Surfing the Silver Wave’. Each paper is assessed by at least 3 members of the Business Jury. Weight: 25%.

Do you want to broaden your horizon and expand your international network? Then the EMCup is the perfect opportunity! After receiving elaborate feedback from participating schools and business jury members, we have made some changes to the assignments and grading process. Please read the new procedure carefully.

Top tenThe top 10 will be calculated based on the grading of Assignment 1, 2A, 2B and 3. These teams will receive the final assignment, Assignment 4, which they have to pitch before both the business jury and the other teams. The team with the best score of Assignment 4 will be the winner of the EMCup 2016! Participation costsTo provide a high-quality programme, we ask for a participation fee of € 145,- per team member (students and coaches). The following is included in this fee:1. Two overnight stays including breakfast on Sunday the 14th of February and Monday the 15th of February 2016 (1 room is available for each team of students, 1 room available per coach);2. Transport during the official EMCup programme;3. Food &Beverage during the official EMCup programme; Other costsAs usual, transport to and from Maastricht has to be paid by the participating teams. Pre- and post-nights are not included, but special requests can be taken care of by the EMCup organisation.
