Here we are in the dog days of summer. We knew it was coming. It was in all of the newspapers. It was on the calendars. But all of that still makes it tough to bear, or, worse yet, bare enough to cool off.

Unfortunately, all of the heat and the rain has turned the weeds and vines into some demonic version of kudzu with incessant and wild, uncontrolled growth. Some of the vines and briars definitely seem to grow by many inches, if not feet, in just a day. The Jordan Lot Riding Train track right‐of‐way is clipped and cleared on Friday and needs to be done again on Saturday. Are the gnomes putting fertilizer on the weeds and briar vines?

Remember, Folks, keep yourself hydrated and well cared for in this summer heat. Heat stress and all of its complications can sneak up on you. Lots of water is best. Water does not corrode your pipes. That is an inebriated myth. Also, not too much soda consumption with all of its nasty sugars and chemicals. We have lots of water in the Jordan Lot Frig. Stay safe and healthy and out of the hospital and away from Nurse Ratchet.

Tallahassee Train Show The Big Bend Model Railroad Association held their annual train show at the North Florida Fairgrounds in Tallahassee on 28 June 2014. Ed Dice set up an information display for the RR Museum. Displayed pictures of the old logging railroads in the Milton area, along with pictures of the Jordan Lot Garden Railroad. Ed talked with lots of folks about the various facilities and things to see at the RR Museum. One gent may join the RR Museum so he can use the history archives for a research project.

The train show was held in two large buildings at the fairgrounds. Lots of room and plenty of chilled air. Needed a jacket inside the building. The Mossy Head crew were outside in the courtyard between the two buildings (no chilled air there). Paul Karczewski, Jack Burk and others set up an RS3 loco and a custom built covered hopper, along with a few tents to provide a little shade out in the heat of the day.

Ed did not set up any G scale trains. There were already several model train layouts including some G scale layouts. Will Davis was there with his live steam loco. Jim and Edith Gaul, former ECGRC members, had a table selling Jim's G scale trains and Edith's Barbie dolls. Jim and Edith did very well.

Several folks from the ECGRC/RR Museum were there. Stephanie Carrington was scooting around

finding some great bargains, and Bill was hunting bargains, too. Jack Grill was also browsing for deals. There were many G scale items to be had. Ed missed out on a few logging cars for Becky Cox. Terry & April Tucker had several tables full of model train supplies. Rodney Rich stopped by to chat. Keith Rapley & Bobbie Dorner were taking everything in. Paul Weston was on the hunt for bargains. Ed Levin was spied with a large package in hand. Mike Moore visited to take things in, too. David Mobley and grandson, Gatlin, enjoyed the train layouts a lot.

It was a great show. Take my word for it. My pictures got lost in the big "bit bucket". But it was a nice train show and well worth the trip.

Club Rail Car Paul Weston donated a spruced up stock car to the Club. Paul cleaned and fixed up the stock car, added metal wheels, Aristo‐Craft couplers, and new vinyl lettering (Hobby Lobby).

Paul announced his donation at the May Club meeting. This stock car joins the other eight rail cars that Paul also donated and fixed up which also bear the Emerald Coast and EC logos. These rail cars are available for anyone to make up a train behind their loco. Where is the RED caboose? $50 fine?

You can see these cars traveling around the Jordan Lot Garden Railroad pulled by various Club members' locos. It certainly is a nice string of cars. Thanks, Paul.

Dothan Train Show We finally got official word, that our next train show participation will be the Dothan train show. It will be 20‐21 Sept, with set up on Friday, 19 Sept. Still waiting to get definite word and details about the train layout space, but expect same as in years past.

The Dothan train shows have always been a great time with more G scale sellers each year. Great facilities to set up the G scale trains inside. The outside space on the asphalt was pretty challenging, either too hot in September, too wet with the sudden rain storms, or bitter cold in December. Inside is much better.

After we finish set up on Friday, we usually head off to a local restaurant for a nice dinner. And then after the show wraps Saturday afternoon at 5 PM, we head to another restaurant for a great dinner. We have a great time. Still looking for Miss Kitty at the Long Branch Saloon.

Mobile Train Show Mobile train show will be held on 4‐5 October 2014. This is a two day train show at the Mobile Via Health, Fitness and Enrichment Center. The gym is filled with tables and a few layouts. Norm Koenig sets up his small G scale LGB trains with the sound tooting and whistling.

An information display will be set up for the RR Museum to give us more visibility for activities over in Milton. Will not set up a separate G scale layout. Things are a bit too cramped in the gym to accommodate such a display.

See Ed Dice for additional details, including a train show flyer. Last year there was not a lot of G scale trains available, but there were a few pieces from estate sales.

Can Recycling Remember folks we recycle aluminum soda cans for

the Club. Keep the cans coming. Periodically, the Can Genie swoops down and carts the bags of cans away leaving an envelope of cash for the Treasurer.

It helps not squashing the cans so the sharp points do not poke holes in the black bags. Every can helps

and that is another can not in the landfill.

Name Tags Remember name tags help keep straight who is who. Frequently, visitors to the Jordan Lot see a bunch of old guys and no idea who is in charge. The name tags help sort out and separate us from the general public. Also, especially for our younger members, wear your name tag so no one gets concerned with your operating trains on the garden RR.

Check with Ed Dice for your name tag if you do not have yours yet. If you lost it, get with Ed for a replacement, along with penance/demerits.

Also, I keep forgetting names. So the name tag helps keep me on track and away from embarrassing moments. Otherwise, you might get called Sylvester or Daffy.

And as a side note, when new name tags are printed up they need to be done in groups of eight. Don't want to waste the photographic paper that the name tags are printed on.

TRAIN SPOTTING Way back on Tuesday, 3 June 2014, Matthew Wertz spotted a unique CSX locomotive in our area. It was one of the CSX Heritage units. Matthew saw CSX #1 Spirit of West Virginia. Great catch, Matthew.

Apparently, there are 14 "Spirit of" heritage units for the CSX railroad. Some folks track each loco as it travels around the country, and then log their

sighting reports up on a website. A quick search found heritageunits.com where special heritage units from all rail lines are tracked. There is a Facebook page “CSX Tracker” with sightings of special CSX units including the

“Spirit of” units. There is a collection of photographs of the different “Spirit of” units at trainweb.org/csxphotos/other_spirit.htm

Matthew caught sight of CSX #1 Spirit of West Virginia at the crossing on Old Bagdad Highway, not far from our RR Depot. Matthew was in the right place at the right time.

New Member Our latest new member is Parker Price. Parker has been running his train with his son Julian at the Jordan Lot. Parker joined 31 May 2014.

We hear that Parker also has a wife, Jessica, and daughter, Riley. But most of the time we just see Parker and Julian at the Jordan Lot.

Al LeBlanc Al LeBlanc was an active model railroader with the Pensacola Model Railroad Club (PMRC). And Al was also an active amateur radio operator. Al passed away 4 June 2014 after a long trek with cancer and chemo treatments. Al always had a sunny outlook and kept looking forward.

Al joined us at one of the Dalton GA large scale train shows. He had a great time with the crew. Al almost joined the ECGRC but his cancer popped up and changed Al's priorities. Al was a great guy and will be missed.

Al was 20 years in the U.S. Navy on several ships, including the carrier Enterprise. Al was also very active with his church and Boy Scouts. Al was buried at Barrancas National Cemetery on 9 June 2014.

The last time some of us saw Al was at the Foley train show in 22‐23 March. Al was looking good then and was active at the train show and the PMRC layout.

Jordan Lot Activities Things have been busy at the Jordan Lot and on the Garden Railroad. Lots of hard work by lots of people. That summer heat is sure making the workload harder to get done.

The new elevated back‐n‐forth "Paperclip" is operational and ready for use. Lots of different trolleys, rail‐trucks and small locos have scooted along without any problems. Remember that the tightest curve is 6.5' in diameter. The upper elevated curves are 10' diameter curves.

Mike Moore did a lot of fence vine trimming. Mike brought in his hedge trimmer and swept up and down the fence to trim back the vines. Much thanks, Mike, for your non‐ECGRC member help.

And in the relentless weeds and bugs battle, Frank Paine has donated a large spray container of weed killer and a bug zapper. Thanks, Frank.

The Picnic Table area track crossing is all finished. Sorry about the sun glare reflecting off of the near‐mirror surface. That makes three crossing decks for the Riding Train.

A newly installed black mailbox is just inside the Train Shed, at the East end, up on the wall over the

small lawn mower. It holds some flyers and info cards for the ECGRC and RR Museum. Saves a trip all of the way into the Train Room and back. Let Ed Dice know if supplies of things are low.

The track power distribution box in Lobe #1 has been reworked. The MDF board was replaced with some fiberglass boards provided by Orlando Gomez. There is significant moisture collecting in the wire chase pipe and up into the distribution box. That moisture had badly corroded the terminal strip. So it was redone with some of the corrosion inhibitor spray applied. Frank Paine donated the large fake boulder covering the box.

A bright red plastic level is hanging in the Train Shed. This allows working on the track while it is energized. Using the metal level in the past got rather shocking at times. Keith Rapley donated the level for the track gang use. Thanks, Keith.

Both Keith and George Provan have been busy with ballasting the Garden RR tracks using the small #89 rocks or chicken grit.

Andy Sloan donated a plastic, outdoor storage cabinet. This storage cabinet was placed adjacent to the new Storage Building. So far, it contains the bags of chicken grit in the bottom, which also holds the cabinet down in any strong winds.

RR Depot Fixes

Fixes and upgrades continue with the RR Museum.

In the Bathrooms Building, besides the new floor, new lights, and new seats, Ed Dice removed the ceiling heaters. Turns out that these old ancient heaters were very much in need of removal. The rust on the two heating units was very heavy. Even the wiring was corroded and fell apart when touched. After much effort and time, both of the rusted hulks got removed and tossed into the trash can. Both holes in the ceilings were covered with plywood. And the old switches were removed (were still live) and the wiring was capped off. A very needed job was successfully done. Now the inside of the Bathrooms still needs painting. Any takers?

CSX Railroad had a grant of $50,000 for some railroad‐related activities. The RR Museum applied with great hopes that our planned use and need would fit well with the CSX goals. However, we got notified on 20 June 2014 that we were not selected. That was a very disappointing result to the RR Museum staff and all of their work on the grant application.



The Business Car windows are being replaced with all of the work almost completely done. The original $2,800 estimate quote got increased to $3,100 for the whole job. This was much needed work as some of the old wood frames had rotted through with holes in the window frames. Another much needed job that needed doing to keep the Business Car sound and dry. Now to fix up the insides ...

locomotive for 7‐1/2" gauge.

Orlando bought the loco from a large scale train

manufacturer. Then Orlando proceeded to paint it

up in a nice CSX paint scheme. Finally, lots of

additional details were added by Orlando to finish it

up. Many hours of work and it looks great. Nice job!

Weston RR Many of you already know of Paul Weston working

on his 7‐1/2" gauge gondola kit. It is progressing

well. Waiting to hear the stats on it and what color.

And Paul and a friend jointly own a small loco which is also at Mossy Head, of course.

Not from Orlando or Paul’s drawing board, but maybe close?

Trains and Planes It is not usual that trains and planes mix it up. But up on the Montana Rail Link railroad in Washington, they did more than mix it up. They had a big wreck.

This happened along a rugged canyon gorge, by a remote river with a Montana Rail Link train hauling five very large flatcars carrying 737 plane fuselages for Boeing. The fuselage bodies were on their way to a Boeing assembly plant. Think those five planes will not see the wide blue yonder.

River rafters were surprised to see the scene, but could not hang around. The Fish and Wildlife Department folks were rushing the rafters along on down the river. But it was a very unusual sight and certainly not something that you see every day.

A train spotter suspected that the derailment was caused by a sun kink due to the high heat conditions. Due to its remote location, assembling the wreck train with its big hook was a huge challenge and took quite a bit of time.

Health & Welfare Bob & Susan Cope ‐ Bob reports "June was

not our best month. As you know, I had my run in with a rusty nail. Put me out of work for a week and generally unproductive for about three weeks. It

sucks getting older. Susan acquired a case of Bronchitis and it had her out of work for week as well. Both of us are back to full steam and running full throttle. Bob C."

Pat Stevens ‐ Pat suffered a serious stroke in 2013, and Pat is recovering. We saw her at the 21 June 2014 Club meeting. That was Pat's first visit to the Jordan Lot for a long time. Glad to see you, Pat.

John Gilbert ‐ John and his wife have moved

to Homosassa (Place of the Peppers) which is north of Tampa into a retirement community. His wife has a cancer diagnosis and is being treated. John has continued heart problems and working thru that. Frank Paine ‐ Just had a successful cataract

surgery mid-July, along with a visit by his brother and family. Frank also donated a large spray container of weed killer for the Jordan Lot weed battle, as well as a bug zapper and fake boulder.

Chris Wolcott ‐ Chris got married in July 2013 to a lovely lady. Chris is planning to get back into garden railroading operations.

Andy & Beth Sloan ‐ Andy reports "Foley balloon festival (14 June) was deflated by muddy grounds, but great people watching." and later "We rode the Eureka Springs and Northern Arkansas tourist train yesterday. We observed their turntable redirect the 1942 EMD diesel switcher from returning with the dinner train the evening before to pulling the passenger car for the first day trip. At the mid-point the loco went thru a wye to get in front of the pass car for the return trip. Good day. No fish to date but we’ve been eating well."

John & Anne Kashynski - John has rejoined the ECGRC. His visits to the mid-week Jordan Lot crew produced positive results.

Bill Carrington - Bill was scheduled for some minor outpatient throat surgery Friday, 25 June. Unfortunately, Bill's simple procedure was not successful. So, Bill goes back again on 4 Aug for the doctors to try and do it again. Wish you well, Bill.

Paul Weston - Paul got himself a new vehicle, a Chevy HHR. Paul calls the style retro. It is very nice, silver car.

A Journey into Florida Railroad History

A Journey into Florida Railroad History is, as the title

states, a brief history of the development of

railroads in the state of Florida. The author covers

from the very humble beginnings of horse drawn

trolleys on wooden plank rails to the modern day

dieselized system of today. There are names of

players you may recognize, and some you may not.

There are names of railroads and places that are

still prominent today and those long gone. The

author describes successes and fiascos.

The book is loosely divided into the very early years

(pre Civil War), the war years and post war

reconstruction, the boom years to the Great

Depression, and then the time to present. Each

chapter focuses on a time frame and the people

who were the movers and shakers at that time in

railroad history and how they affected railroad

history. Some were business people, some were

politicians, and some were wolves in sheep’s

clothing. There is also division of regions, the

panhandle, the north east section and the east and

west coasts of the finger.

Although the book is in essence a history book, it is

presented in a quite enjoyable more storybook

fashion. I found the book a great read and it kept

my interest throughout, even on subject areas not

of my primary interest. There is information in

particular on the Bagdad Land and Lumber Co.,

some great background information on the CSX and

its predecessors, and even a mention of The West

Florida Railroad Museum in the closing chapter.

I would recommend this book to anyone even the

least bit interested Florida railroad history, or even

Florida history in general. ‐ ‐ Bob Cope

GGR Club Closure The Gulfcoast Garden Railroaders club down in Parrish, Florida formed a couple of years ago. They

were mostly comprised of the guys and gals that joined us at the Perry GA and Dalton GA large scale train shows. They filled in the center area inside the large track ovals we set down. Stan Kotas and other guys were the organizers.

Well, they have closed as of the end of June. I do not know all of the reasons. Think lack of member participation was the main cause.

Some of the club members have joined the Florida Railroad Museum to continue their railroading activities.

GGR did their monthly club meetings in a round‐robin arrangement at different club members homes. They also had lots of field trips to various railroad related places in the south and central Florida area, such as a shipping port. And they were very active with local railroad themed events in the area like Thomas and Christmas trains.

Roaming Gnome Invasion We at the ECGRC have endured frequent roaming gnome appearances and disappearances at the Jordan Lot Garden Railroad and at the various train shows. Well, they seem to have a cousin over in Mossy Head now.

Paul Karczewski reported the appearance of a gnome that was roaming around the P&S Railroad. As of Paul's report, they had not succeeded in capturing the elusive fellow, despite lots of folks driving and riding the rails at the P&S.

Just recently, Paul K. reported that another gnome has appeared and they have changed or gotten a



facelift. Does a gnome need a facelift? So, folks, be wary and be warned that there are gnomes out there along with the other tricksters. Be careful and watch where you step.

The local tribe of gnomes at the Jordan Lot celebrate a new member arriving. Sam came from lands far away. But his trusty and sturdy steed served him well throughout the arduous journey.

Standard Gauge We have heard the term "standard gauge" for quite some time now. It has been confused with G scale during many discussions. Well, Standard Gauge is definitely different than G scale.

Think of Standard Gauge as Lionel O gauge on steroids. It is three‐rail track and looks much like the old Lionel O gauge three‐rail track.

In the picture above, the top track is Standard Gauge. The middle track is the familiar G gauge. The bottom track is the old Lionel O gauge.

Discussed with Mike's Hobby Shop near Houston TX about standard gauge and he said it was not popular around there. He can order it but does not carry much of it. He knows it is popular in other areas of the country.

Don't worry. There are no plans to add Standard Gauge into the Jordan Lot area. Nor will there be a Standard Gauge train added at the train show exhibits. SWARM has nothing to worry about.

In-Line Fuses Hot news flash. We have some in‐line fuses for the power track feeds out to the Garden Railroad. These allow putting in a low‐amperage fuse so it blows before damage to the loco or rail car.

Before now, a derailment could cause a short but not pull enough amperage to blow the 15 amp or 10 amp fuse in the TE/Base Station, or the 14 amp crowbar trip in the power supplies. Thus, the derailed train sits there cooking with a 5 amp or 8 amp current flow just cooking and melting. Bad! George Provan had the latest example of this where a freight truck shorted out but it did not blow the



fuse, and thus, cooked enough to get a wheel red hot and a melted freight truck frame. A real hotbox!

The red rectangular fuse holders use the same familiar ATC/ATO fuses that we have been using with the old Train Engineer and the new Revolution Base Station. And we need a supply of spare fuses.

5 amp ATC/ATO fuse

The engineer (Y‐O‐U!) needs to check for the size of fuse needed to operate your train. Too small a fuse and it will overload and blow, unnecessarily. Too big a fuse and it will not blow soon enough to protect the train. Thus, you have to know how much power your train will use and then insert the proper sized fuse.

Eventually, the rough‐and‐ready set up will be replaced with a much better setup using a clean, white fiberglass panel. Plus, will have a blown fuse indicator light and buzzer/beeper so it gets attention, both inside and outside on the light board. And an optional feature may include an

electric seat charge to wake up the sleeping engineer. And who would that be?

A circuit breaker was found not to be as responsive as it needed to be. The fuse blows quicker and better protects the on‐rail train equipment.

Club Patches Another batch of ECGRC cloth patches have been made up by the embroidery shop. The elves toiling night and day, er...OK, a few hours, to get the patches made up. This time we have two new sizes. The old size was 4 inches. The new sizes are 3 inch and 2 inch.
