The Student Engagement

Handbook: Practice inHigher EducationEditors

Elisabeth DunneUniversity of Exeter, UK

Derfel OwenUniversity of Exeter, UK

SynopsisThere has been an unprecedented global surge in the numbers of young people going to

university over the last few years and, for a multitude of different reasons, higher education

worldwide is in a state of flux. To cope effectively, the universities of today will need to be

more responsive to the needs of growing numbers of students and better attuned to their

requirements. Many complex factors are driving strategic change and influencing institutional

decision-making processes, but what is clear is that students are becoming increasingly

fundamental to supporting change processes at both national and local levels, and that

institutions are working in collaboration with students in new ways in order to understand

and improve the learning environment. Within this context, ‘student engagement’ is the

catch-phrase of the moment. This book highlights some of the national and global agendas

and issues, from emerging sectors, to the meaning of student engagement for different

stakeholders. It provides a backdrop to themes of student engagement as well as examples of

innovative and inspiring means of engaging with students in practice, empowering them to take

responsibility within decision-making processes and enabling them to lead and deliver change.

Sharing Ownership, Profits,

and Decision-making in the21st Century Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory &Labor Management Firms, Volume 14

Editors

Doug KruseRutgers University, USA

Takao KatoColgate University and IZA, Germany

SynopsisThe series Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory and Labor-Managed Firms has

been a leading forum for high-quality original theoretical and empirical research in the broad

area of participatory and labor managed organizations. While general and specialized books

publish work in this field, many do so only occasionally. Advances has been the only annual

peer-reviewed periodical that presents some of the best papers in the field in a single volume.

Advances interprets the field broadly, and publishes papers dealing with a variety of topics

including participatory employment practices, alternative forms of control and ownership, and

“shared capitalism”. Advances also welcomes diverse methodologies ranging from standard

econometric studies to new institutional economics to behavioral economics.

 Accounting in Central and

Eastern EuropeResearch in Accounting in Emerging Economies,Volume 13

Editors

Dr Catalin Albu The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, Romania

Razvan MustataBabes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Shahzad UddinUniversity of Essex, Colchester, UK

Mathew TsamenyiUniversity of Birmingham, UK

SynopsisCountries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), most of them former components of the

communist bloc, have suffered diverse influences over time. Historically, the advent of

communism in the 1950s has stopped the economic and political development of these

countries. Its fall during the late 1980s and early 1990s triggered severe changes in the

economic and social environment, with profound consequences on the countries’ accounting

and business models. The accounting regulatory process of these countries has mostly been

a public one, although some countries also involved private sector and professional bodies.

With economic and political reforms these countries are now reforming their accounting

systems with for example the adoption of International Accounting Standards/International

Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Additionally, the CEE countries’ political will to join the

European Union compelled the regulators to ensure a high level of harmonization with the

European Directives. This volume present theoretical and empirical papers that will further our

understanding of accounting issues in CEE countries.

Research on Professional

Responsibility and Ethics in AccountingResearch on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting, Volume 17

Editors

Dr Cynthia JeffreyIowa State University, USA

SynopsisResearch on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting is devoted to publishing

high-quality research and cases that focus on the professional responsibilities of accountants

and how they deal with the ethical issues they face. The series features articles on a broad

range of important and timely topics, including professionalism, social responsibility, corporate

responsibility, ethical judgments, and accountability. The professional responsibilities

of accountants are broad-based; they must serve clients and user groups whose needs,

incentives, and goals may be in conflict. Further, accountants must interpret and apply codes

of conduct, accounting and auditing principles, and securities regulations. Compliance with

professional guidelines is judgment-based, and characteristics of the individual, the culture,

and situation affect how these guidelines are interpreted and applied, as well as when they

might be violated. Interactions between accountants, regulators, standard setters, and

industries also have ethical components. Research into the nature of these interactions,

resulting dilemmas, and how and why accountants resolve them is the focus of this book.

Intellectual Capital and

Public Sector PerformanceStudies in Managerial and Financial Accounting,Volume 27

Editors

Kardina KamaruddinUniversity Technology MARA, Malaysia

Indra AbeysekeraUniversity of Wollongong, Australia

Marc EpsteinRice University, Houston, TX, USA

SynopsisThis study investigated the management of intellectual capital (observed as internal capital,

external capital, and human capital) as a tool for non-financial organizational performance

(observed as effectiveness, efficiency, and reputation). The study used self-administered survey

questionnaires to collect data on both the intellectual capital and non-financial organizational

performance aspects of the Malaysian public sector which has undergone a radical

transformation through New Public Management Reforms. The total number of participants was

1,092 covering the three levels (federal, state, and the local governments) of the government.

The results of the survey questionnaire were analyzed using a multivariate Structural Equation

Model, and revealed that there is a significant and positive relationship between intellectual

capital and performance. Findings provide useful input to policymakers into the review of the

relevant intellectual capital resources, and on improving the public sector performance. From

a practical perspective, one way of increasing the level of public sector performance is to tie

performance to intellectual capital.

Workplace Morality:

Behavioral Ethicsin OrganizationsEditors

Prof. Muel KapteinErasmus University, Netherlands

SynopsisWhy do honest and decent employees sometimes overstep the mark? What makes managers

with integrity go off the rails? What causes well-meaning organizations to deceive their clients,

employees and shareholders? Social psychology offers surprising answers to these intriguing

and timely questions. Drawing on scientific experiments and examples from business practice,

Muel Kaptein discusses why good people sometimes do bad things and how they rise above

this behavior. He explains why cheats wear sunglasses, why overstepping the mark could be

a good thing, how a surplus of rules creates offenders and why we should be suspicious of

colleagues who wash their hands after meetings.

 VAR Models in

Macroeconomics –New Developmentsand Applications:Essays in Honorof Christopher A. Sims

 Advances in Econometrics, Volume 31

Editors

Prof. Thomas FombySouthern Methodist University, Dallas, TX, USA

Anthony MurphyFederal Reserve Bank of Dallas, USA

Prof. Lutz KilianUniversity of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA

SynopsisVector autoregressive (VAR) models are among the most widely used econometric tools in the

fields of macroeconomics and financial economics. Much of what we know about the response

of the economy to macroeconomic shocks and about how various shocks have contributed

to the evolution of macroeconomic and financial aggregates is based on VAR models. VAR

models also have been used successfully for economic and business forecasting, for modeling

risk and volatility, and for the construction of forecast scenarios. Since the introduction of

VAR models by C.A. Sims in 1980, the VAR methodology has continuously evolved. Even

today important extensions and reinterpretations of the VAR framework are being developed.

Examples include VAR models for mixed-frequency data, VAR models as approximations to

DSGE models, factor-augmented VAR models, new tools for the identification of structural

shocks in VAR models, panel VAR approaches, and time-varying parameter VAR models.

This volume collects contributions from some of the leading VAR experts in the world on VAR

methods and applications. Each paper highlights and synthesizes a new development in this

literature in a way that is accessible to practitioners, to graduate students, and to readers in

other fields.

The annual A-volume contains peer-reviewed articles comparable to other academic

methodology and related fields (philosophy of science, sociology of science, rhetoric of

science, and intellectual history), including multiple reviews of the same work.

The annual B- and C-volumes are archival supplements that present previously unpublished

materials -- lecture notes, papers, longer manuscripts, correspondence, etc.- of interest in both

fields addressed in the A-vol.

 A National Developmental

and Negotiated Approachto School and CurriculumEvaluation Advances in Program Evaluation, Volume 14

Editors

Mai LeiThe University of Auckland, New Zealand

Saville KushnerUniversity of the West of England, UK

SynopsisCurrent conventions in school evaluation focus on accountability, control and compliance. New

Zealand offers a distinctive, systemic alternative to school self-evaluation, with developmental

and negotiated approaches ingrained throughout the education system, from school inspection

to major government schooling improvement initiatives. In New Zealand there is no national

testing, other than a Ministry-sponsored (voluntary) formative assessment system designed

for school and teacher self-evaluation. This is a form of professional and program evaluation

where there is shared power and responsibility between evaluators and those being evaluated.

Through a detailed national case study of New Zealand, together with commentaries from

international specialists, this volume examines the successes and challenges of this approachto programme evaluation and its generalizability to other educational and professional review

settings, and show how education systems can recover a balance between an achievement

agenda and a focus on educational quality.

Digital Humanities: Current

Perspective, Practice andResearchCutting-edge Technologies in Higher Education,Volume 7

Editors

Bryan CarterUniversity of Central Missouri, MO, USA

Charles WankelSt John’s University, NY, USA

SynopsisThe field of Digital Humanities is becoming more exciting as the number of low-cost or free

mobile and desktop applications flood the market allowing users to accomplish tasks that

only a few years ago were either not possible or required complicated coding or high-end

computing power. The range of these applications provides access to digital communications,

advanced visualization, data storage and retrieval at unprecedented levels. Digital Humanists

are incorporating these tools as part of their teaching, research, and creative expression.

This research volume approaches the topic from a perspective that will be attractive to those

just beginning, through the step by step guides to set up and use of a variety of tools with

accompanying objectives, and to those who are more advanced, through more challenging

applications and their use for teaching and research. Furthermore this text will be of interestto administrators or those sceptical about the Digital Humanities, as the essays will highlight

studies and research by experts in the field while maintaining the particular perspective on

literary studies and Digital Africana Studies. This volume includes an introduction to the

Digital Humanities and chapters on The Social Web, Communications, Visualization and

Collaboration.

SynopsisThe comprehensive, phased approach presents four sets of considerations in course

redevelopment: design, interaction, media, and evaluation. Each consideration is presented

in a separate chapter, which explores the extant literature and applies the latest research and

understandings to design decisions. The power of this approach comes from a thorough

examination of each consideration coupled with a method by which to apply it. Decisions are

structured and layered, each phase informing the next.

SynopsisThis book draws attention to supplementary education, which is growing in many parts of

the world, but often goes unrecognized for what it is: a hidden form of privatized education.

It provides ‘big picture’ analyses to comparatively explain the intensity, authority and policy

contexts of supplementary education.

Collective Efficacy:

InterdisciplinaryPerspectives onInternational Leadership Advances in Educational Administration, Volume 20

Editors

Anthony H. NormoreCalifornia Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, CA, USA

Nancy ErbeCalifornia State University, USA

Key selling points:• A unique handbook that provides an authoritative voice on student engagement and

empowerment in Higher Education

• Recognises the need for reconceptualising student roles and what it means to be ‘engaged’

• Highlights some of the national and global agendas and issues, from emerging sectors, of

the meaning of student engagement for different stakeholders

• Provides a backdrop to themes as well as examples of innovative and inspiring means of

engaging with students in practice, empowering them to take responsibility within decision-

making processes, engaging in their learning communities in new ways and enabling themto lead and deliver change.

SynopsisDrawing from the works of renowned psychologist, Albert Bandura, an interdisciplinary and

international group of collaborative and well-respected scholars demonstrate the positive

impact of collective efficacy on an international scale. Bandura stated that “A group’s

attainments are the product not only of shared knowledge and skills of the different members,

but also of the interactive, coordinative, and synergistic dynamics of their transactions”

(Bandura, 2006, p. 316). In this book leaders from many professional disciplines and global

cultures collectively shared research, understanding, and experiences about leadership

development and growth. Disciplines include education, law, sociology, theology, psychology,

law enforcement, aviation, corrections, criminal justice, military, peace and negotiation.

Authors represent North America, Latin America, Asia, Middle East, Europe, and Africa. This

book exemplifies the benefits of collective efficacy and bridging gaps among professionsand scholars where there’s often a tendency to work in silos and isolation. We share much

that might benefit us and others when explored and discovered. Emergent themes include

transformational leadership, servant leadership, service learning and community development,

consciousness and emotional intelligence, leaders of the new millennium, and challenges for

future collective efficacy.

SynopsisHumankind has long considered the relationship it holds with nature to be both a blessing and

a challenge. The onset of climate change has brought a new impetus to this relationship.

This volume of Advances in Sustainability and Environmental Justice will examine

environmental philosophy from a number of viewpoints. Each contributor has a unique

perspective on the interaction and engagement between humanity and the rest of nature, from

the technological to the philosophical.

Environmental Philosophy: the Art of Life in a World of Limits provides a series of interesting

studies on humanity’s place in the world, and the impact this is having on the planet. The book

poses the question as to whether life can be lived in harmony with nature, and what limits can

be achieved in the impact such life has on the world around us.

Risk and Conflicts: Local

Responses to NaturalDisastersCommunity, Environment and Disaster RiskManagement, Volume 14

Editors

Rajib ShawKyoto University, Japan

 Andreas Neef Kyoto University, Japan

SynopsisCommunities affected by natural disasters are often stigmatized as being passive with regard

to disaster prevention, mitigation and adaptation, waiting only for government assistance

in the aftermath of such events. However, many innovative community initiatives have been

developed to address natural disasters, which are often characterized as “local responses”.

While scrutinizing the potential strength and comparative advantage of community-based

disaster response, this book analyzes and illustrates how individuals, families and social

groups in rural and urban communities perceive natural disasters, their underlying reasons and

their effects on their livelihoods, and documents and analyzes the role of local responses to

natural disasters and conflict. Key factors determining the degree of vulnerability and resilience

of affected communities are also elicited. Several pivotal issues related to community-baseddisaster responses are addressed, such as the relationship between local and external

knowledge in addressing disasters, the relevance of institutional and policy frameworks for

community-based disaster response and the role of social capital and collective action.

Jim GoesUniversity of Phoenix and Walden University, USA

SynopsisDramatic changes to the structure of health systems since the 1980s have seen the

development of large, integrated health organizations designed to provide scale and scope

advantages, improve the quality of care and health outcomes, and provide greater bargaining

power relative to payers and large employers. This transition has led to greater interest in

understanding hospitals and health systems as complex systems. Two important themes

emerged from this effort: 1. Creation and organization of physician-health organizations, and

alignment of these organizations with hospital or system structure; and 2. Viewing health care

organizations as complex systems, leading to new perspectives on design and management

of these organizations. In Volume 15, Reuben McDaniel and L. Robert Burns, authors of two

influential articles on these themes from earlier volumes of AHCM, revisit the evolution of health

systems organization in light of regulatory and organizational evolution in health care, includingthe Patient Protection and Accountable Care Act of 2010, and increasing consolidation of

health systems. Five additional refereed papers assess the latest evidence on physician

integration, complexity, and system redesign.

International Business and

Sustainable DevelopmentProgress in International Business, Volume 8

Editors

Prof. Alain VerbekeUniversity of Calgary, Canada

Prof. Rob van TulderRotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, The Netherlands

Prof. Roger StrangeUniversity of Sussex, UK

SynopsisSustainable development is arguably one of the prime issues in the world. It has social,

ecological and economic dimensions, which makes it also a multi-faceted and complex

problem. International Business scholars have stressed that the Multinational Enterprise

should be considered the most important vehicle through which sustainable development

occurs in developing countries. However, actual study of the topic remains fraught with

theoretical and empirical caveats. This eighth volume in the Progress in International Business

Research series includes new texts from a number of leading scholars and opinion leaders

in the area. Contributors develop new levels of analysis (in particular global value chains

or the partnership strategies of firms) that present promising areas for new theoretical and

empirical insights. Whilst authors from leading international institutes are brought together in

this volume, younger scholars with innovative ideas are also given room. The volume coversfour dimensions of sustainable development, combining different scientific disciplines, levels

of analysis and actor perspectives: 1. New trends and concepts in international business and

sustainable development; 2. New corporate strategies for sustainable development; 3. New

forms and levels of cooperation for sustainable development and 4. New public policies for

sustainable development.

Leadership and Cultural

Webs in OrganisationsWeavers’ TalesEditors

Dr Adrian McLean Ashridge Consulting, UK

SynopsisThe call for a change of culture is commonplace in corporate and governmental settings.

What this means and how to go about it have proved to be elusive challenges for the field of

organisation and leadership studies. This work brings insights from the field of anthropology to

illuminate these questions and proposes a fresh approach to working with them. Interweaving

ideas from the fields of Social Construction, Anthropology and Complex Responsive Processes

with examples of cultural change drawn from across the spectrum of organisational life, this

book offers a compelling perspective on how to work with these powerful yet hidden forces

of organisational life. The author combines 35 years of experience as a consultant with the

academic rigour of business academia. With a capacity to bring clarity to complex issues, the

author identifies a range of practical and strategic options for those leaders, managers and

consultants looking to facilitate cultural change. Building on the metaphor of cultures as ‘webs

of signification’, McLean considers how cultural webs form, how they change, and shows how

to reveal the unique forms that they take in different organizational settings.

Gendered Perspectives on

Conflict and Violence Advances in Gender Research, Volume 18, Part A

Editors

Professor Marcia SegalIndiana University Southeast at New Albany, IN, USA

Professor Vasilikie DemosUniversity of Minnesota Morris, MN, USA

SynopsisThe chapters in this two-part volume deal with a range of gender-based violence issues that

are making news headlines daily. In Part A the contributors address the ways in which wartime

rape is treated in international courts, why and how the gender language used at the United

Nations matters, how asylum-seekers fleeing gendered violence are treated, how the press

and the courts frame rape and other acts of violence, perceptions and responses of and to

disabled and LGBTQ people who are victims of gendered violence, the ways we respond to the

perpetrators of violence, and the relationship of military service to nationalism. The focus of the

volume is global in the sense that international law and tribunals are discussed and norms and

attitudes from global samples are compared. A variety of qualitative and quantitative methods

including interviews, textual analysis, autoethnography, and secondary analysis of large

sample surveys are employed. Each of the chapters has theoretical as well as policy or social

implications.

SynopsisOne undeniable fact about families is that they keep changing, both in terms of structure and

behavior. Many factors have served to bring about such changes, including social, cultural,

political, and institutional change, resulting in family forms which perhaps may represent the

new ‘traditional’ in the not-so-distant future.

Social Theories of History

and Histories of SocialTheoryCurrent Perspectives in Social Theory, Volume 31

Editors

Harry F. DahmsUniversity of Tennessee, USA

SynopsisIn different ways, social theory and social history represent discourses that implicitly or

explicitly highlight the need to apply perspectives on modern social realities that are conducive

to discerning and scrutinizing the centrality of large-scale processes that have been influencing

and shaping the relationships between individuals, social groups and forms of organization,

and society as a whole.

Social theories with history stress form at the expense of substance (and social, political

or cultural relevance); histories without social theory tend to amount to little more than the

enumeration of isolated facts, at the expense of cohesive narratives that may be socially

compelling and meaningful.

Representing a range of approaches and emphases, the chapters in this volume address and

illustrate linkages between social theory and history; social theory and historical analysis as

mutually supportive frames of analysis, and affinities between the history of social thought and

the history of modern societies. Both classical and more recent theorists feature prominently,

especially Durkheim and Weber, but also such central figures in the field as Bourdieu andLuhmann.

Different Paths to Curbing

Corruption: Lessons fromDenmark, Finland, HongKong, New Zealand andSingaporeResearch in Public Policy Analysis and Management,Volume 23

Editors

Jon S. T. QuahRetired Professor of Political Science, National University of Singapore, and

 Anti-Corruption Consultant, Singapore

Clay WescottNaval Postgraduate School, USA

SynopsisCorruption is a serious problem in many countries around the world, according to

Transparency International’s 2012 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) and the World Bank’s

2011 Control of Corruption governance indicator. However, some countries like New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Singapore and Hong Kong,

have consistently performed better on these two indicators than other countries.

While some research has been done in the form of case studies on combating corruption

there has been no comparative study on how these five countries have succeeded in curbing

corruption and the lessons to be learnt by other countries from their experiences.

This book seeks to explain why these five countries have succeeded in combating corruption;

and identify the lessons which other countries can learn from these successful experiences.

Of interest to policy-makers, anti-corruption practitioners and civil society activists, the edited

book will also be a useful resource for undergraduate and graduate courses on corruption

and governance in universities as well as for training courses on anti-corruption strategies

conducted by anti-corruption agencies and international organizations in various countries.

Disability and Intersecting

StatusesResearch in Social Science and Disability, Volume 7

Editors

Prof. Barbara AltmanIndependent Consultant, USA

Prof. Sharon BarnarttGallaudet University, DC, USA

SynopsisDisability can be either an ascribed status or an achieved status and its combination with

other statuses will affect the person’s social experiences. The term intersectionality has been

used most often to discuss the ways in which the dual and simultaneous statuses of ‘black’

and ‘’female’ exist as facets of social structure and culture, interact in both those spheres, and

affect individuals in ways which neither one does separately. Little attention has been paid to

disability in this context, despite the many parallels to race and gender. This volume challenges

critical thinking about the interrelationships with disability. It questions if the concepts and

methods of intersectionality can be applied to disability at all or if they can be applied in the

same way. The authors debate whether different conception of intersectionality would fit the

disability context better and if there are methodologies which could be used to examine it. A

variety of empirical evidence about situations in which disability intersects with other roles are

also examined.

Music and LawSociology of Crime, Law and Deviance, Volume 18

Editors

Prof. Mathieu DeflemUniversity of South Carolina, USA

SynopsisThis volume deals with various social-science perspectives on law and legal control pertaining

to music in a variety of contexts. Under influence of important recent social developments,

especially in the realm of communications technology, the world of music has been changing

very rapidly and profoundly these past decades. As a result, the world of music, especially

popular music, has been subject to a range of new legal issues. This volume brings together

some 15 scholars to contribute their respective chapters on the socio-legal aspects involved in

music as a social reality. The chapters address various pertinent questions from the perspective

of socio-legal studies, sociology of law, jurisprudence, and related social and behavioral

sciences. The issues addressed can range from matters of formal law and legislation to

law-related behavior, deviance, and informal normative structures and processes that have a

relevance to music, whether in a contemporary or historical setting. Thematically diverse within

the province of the social and behavioral sciences related to law, the chapters in this volume

are not restricted in terms of theoretical approach and methodological orientation.

From Economy to

Society?: Perspectiveson Transnational RiskRegulationStudies in Law, Politics, and Society, Volume 62

Editors

Bettina LangeUniversity of Oxford, UK

Diana ThomasKeele University, UK

Prof. Austin Sarat Amherst College, MA, USA

SynopsisThis special issue asks what role society can play in the regulation of transnational risks, as

an alternative to or at least significant addition to reliance on state regulatory activity and the

myth of the self-regulatory capacity of markets (Stiglitz, 2001, p. xiii). How can a social sphere

contribute to the prevention and management of risks, often transnational in nature, posed by

economic activity?

Leading socio-legal scholars explore whether and how the idea of harnessing the regulatory

capacity of a social sphere provides a new analytical lens that can provide fresh insights into

transnational risk regulation, and whether this idea helps to identify innovative approaches to

regulating transnational risks.

Radical Interactionism on

the RiseStudies in Symbolic Interaction, Volume 41

Editors

Dr Lonnie AthensSeton Hall University, NJ, USA

Prof. Norman K. DenzinInstitute of Communications Research, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA

SynopsisThis issue focuses on “radical interactionism,” which recent emergence as an alternative

perspective to conventional symbolic interactionism has sparked fierce debate in both North

 America and Europe.

Lonnie Athens discusses the four fundamental differences between radical and conventional

symbolic interactionism. The prominent scholars compare the relative insights offered not only

between radical interactionism and symbolic interactionism, but between radical interactionism

and feminism, dramaturgy, critical studies, and neo-pragmatism. Without exception, they

found the radical interactionism revealed new and formidable insights that improved our

general understanding of human group life and critical problems that arise during it.

While some contributors believe that radical interactionism marks the development of a new

and more vibrant form of interactionism which in due time will replace its much older and more

conservative cousin, others believe that it only signals the need for traditional interactionists to

finally start making some much-needed modifications in symbolic interactionism if they wish it

to remain a viable sociological perspective in the 21st century.

Synopsis“Governance is about managing networks”. This quote from political scientist Rod A.W.

Rhodes pioneered a whole series of governance studies in different disciplines. Accordingly,

destination governance describes the collective management of tourism destinations.

Promoting collective action in tourism destinations means dealing with a myriad of different

actors and applying various instruments. Probably the most basic requirement is to take into

account the peculiarities of every single destination. Therefore, this book approaches the

issue of contemporary destination governance from a case study point of view focusing on

16 destinations. In contrast to other publications in the field of destination governance, the

book concentrates on the discussion of cases and the peculiarities of destinations which

influence the destination governance. It demonstrates how different theories from the fields of

organizational studies, strategic management, tourism research and sociology can enlighten

our understanding of particular real-world situations. Last but not least the bottom-up approach

supports practitioners and students by making otherwise complex theories accessible to a

broader audience.
