dedicaTionThis book is dedicated to Steve Gietschier of The Sporting News, who faithfully kept the flame burning for as long as they would let him.

acknowledGmenTsThis bookas well as many other important baseball reference works of the past three decadeswould not be possible without the enormous expertise of my co-editor and good friend Pete Palmer. Thanks to president Dick Beverage and executive director John Zajc of The Society for American Baseball Research for their support. Kudos to several SABR members and baseball statistics experts for their assistance in putting together the data for this book. Rod Nelson and Ted Turocy generously helped whenever asked, and Ed Washuta was an invaluable resource in compiling the comprehensive necrologies. Thanks also to baseball research stalwarts Bob McConnell, Ray Nemec, and Cliff Kachline. Sandy Coe of Coe Design performed yeoman service on both the cover and the team logotypes. Finally, special praise for our typesetter, Jeremy C. Ellis, who made an incredibly complicated task seem doable. Gary Gillette

The e merald Guide To BaseBall 2008

inTroducTionIf youre reading this, you have in your hands or on your computer hard drive the first edition of the Emerald Guide to Baseball, our attempt to fill the gap in the historical record created by the demise of The Sporting News Baseball Guide. First published in 1943, The Sporting News Guide was truly the annual book of record for our National Pastime. It is our great privilege to offer our new publications, documenting for posterity a slice of recent baseball history. Because cessation of publication of the TSN Guide was not announced until spring 2007, it was impossible to put together a replacement product in time for the 2007 season. Therefore, the inaugural version of our new Emerald Guide is being offered in several editions, both in hard copy and in downloadable PDF format. The 2008 edition of the Emerald Guide covers the 2007 season and is available in PDF and print-on-demand/ hard copy versions. It also includes a 2008 directory of Major League Baseball and is almost 550 pages long. The 2007 edition of the Emerald Guide covers the 2006 season and is available in PDF and print-on-demand/ hard copy versions. It is more than 470 pages long. The combination edition of the Emerald Guide covers both 2006 and 2007 and also includes the 2008 directory. It is available in PDF and print-on-demand/hard copy versions. Note that the combination edition (740 pages) includes the large majority of content from each of the separate yearly editions, but some material had to be left out to keep the page count within the limits of current binding technology. The deluxe combination edition of the Emerald Guide runs more than 1,100 pages and includes 100 percent of the content in both yearly editions as well as the 2008 directory. Because of its size, the deluxe edition is available only in PDF format. Historically, the primary purpose of annual baseball guides has been the publication of the official league standings plus the official team and individual statistics for both Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball. Many other types of content have been included in the annual guides over the years, but these core statistics were always the raison detre. Our new Emerald Guide follows faithfully in that tradition, containing the official batting, pitching, and fielding statistics and extensive lists of league leaders for every team and every player in the Major Leagues. Note that, as with the TSN Guides, the Minor League Baseball sections in our printed editions include the Mexican League but not any independent leagues, foreign leagues or winter leagues. Leader boards and fielding statistics for the low minors are available in the deluxe PDF edition, which also includes complete data for the Dominican and Venezuelan Summer Leagues. Another key function that the annual guides have historically filled is to present information on the upcoming major league season. The World Wide Web has become the place most fans look for such information in recent years, but it is still important for this information to be recorded for posterity. The Web is a wonderful tool but, sadly, too much of its content remains ephemeral. For various reasons, our new Emerald Guide does not include every type of information that the old Sporting News Guides printed. However, we are proud to have published an enormous amount of information that was never, ever included between the covers of the old TSN Guides. We hope you like the editorial mix we chose.

direcToryContact information for Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball, and many other related organizations important to the baseball community is contained in the Directory section. The 2008 and combination editions of the Emerald Guide include the following information for each major league team: Schedules for 2008; Front office directories, including managers and coaching staffs; Minor league affiliates, including managers and coaches; Spring Training rosters, including non-roster invitees; Opening Day rosters; Radio, television, and cable TV broadcast information, including Spanish-language broadcasts; and The most comprehensive listing of career batting and pitching leaders for each franchise ever printed in an annual guide. Contact information for Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball, and many other related organizations important to the baseball community is also contained in the Directory section.

year in reviewThese sections for 2006 and 2007 begin with a substantive essay documenting the major events for each season, both on and off the field. Also included are the aforementioned standings and complete batting/pitching/fielding statistics, extensive leaderboards, notable performances, day-by-day game logs, postseason highlights and box scores, a postseason register, All-Star Game box scores and play-by-play, an umpires roster, transactions logs, coverage of the June first-year player drafts, major league debuts, and a necrology. exPanded sTandinGs Expanded Standings follow the year-in-review essay for the major leagues and include team home/away records, records in one-run and extra inning games, records vs. LHP/RHP, records vs. each division, in interleague play, and vs. each opponent. Also shown for the AL and NL are total and average attendance, head-to-head Won-Lost records, and headto-head Runs Scored/Runs Allowed data. Similar, though less extensive information is presented for each minor league. leader Boards The MLB Leader Boards cover 51 batting and pitching categories, showing the Top 25 in each for the American and National Leagues. Minor League Leader Boards cover 47 batting and pitching categories, showing the top 10 in each

league. The Top 25 active Career Batting and Pitching Leaders are also listed in 33 major categories. . MiLB Leader Boards covering 47 batting and pitching categories, showing the Top 10 in each league are available in the deluxe edition. day-By-day Game loGs Team Day-by-Day Game Logs summarize the most comprehensive set of daily data to appear in print: Runs Scored, Runs Allowed, Hits, Hits Allowed, Errors, Relative Position in Standings, Streaks, Day/Night, Attendance, Multiple Pitchers of Record, and Home Team Home Runs. A separate table lists each teams games started by position as well as its most frequent lineup used. umPire reGisTer The Umpire Register shows the full name, date of birth, place of birth, debut year, crew assignment, uniform number, and career ejections for all the men in blue. TransacTions The Transactions logs contain all moves pertaining to each clubs 40-player roster, listed chronologically. firsT-year Player drafT The First-Year Player Draft includes a complete listing of players (mostly amateur) selected in the annual June cavalcade, including their full name, date of birth, height/weight, bats/ throws, position, school, level, and bonus amount (if known). major leaGue deBuT The Major League Debut section contains all players making their first big-league appearance, listed by club, with date of birth, place of birth, position, height/weight, bats/throws, and signing data (date, draft year, round, overall pick number, and recommending scout). necroloGy The Necrology documents the passing of each major leaguer with a brief baseball epitaph, not merely a regurgitation of a statistical line. The minor league necrology is the most thorough ever published and recognizes the military service of the deceased players.

league awards, including those from The Sporting News and Baseball America are also shown. All winners of the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year awards are listed. Ex Post Facto selections for MVPs, Pitchers of the Year, and Rookies of the Year are included, as picked by the editors of The ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia, for every year and league in which those awards were not originally given. Other sidebars include a listing of all members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame (sorted by type of election and year inducted) as well as results of each World Series, League Championship Series, and Division Series.

a Brief hisTory of annual BaseBall GuidesSince professional league play began in 1876, there have been dozens of different types of annual books that have used the term guide in their titles. However, to a well-read baseball fan, the term annual guide is generally used to refer to a series of official or quasi-official books that published the official batting, pitching, and fielding statistics for both the minor leagues and major leagues for the previous season. The most important series of annual baseball guides were: The Spalding Guides, 18761939; The Reach Guides, 18831939; The combined Spalding-Reach Guides, 194041; and The Sporting News Guides, 19422006;

Note that the season covered in each guide was the year before the publication/cover date. Also note that the titles for these annual guides often changed over the years. For example, The Sporting News series of guides had five different titles from 1942 through 2006. All except the first edition in 1942which was entitled the Official Baseball Record Bookcontained the phrase baseball guide. The Spalding Guides from 190931 did not contain minor league statistics. During this period; Spalding also published annual Spalding Record books, which contained the missing minor league information as well as somewhat less major league coverage. The 1943 Baseball Guide and Record Book published by The Sporting News truncated its minor league statistics. As a result, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis put out a very extensive guide for 1943 that was complete. Barnes also published an official baseball guide in 1945 (covering both the 1943 and 1944 seasons) and in 1946.

sideBarsThroughout the Emerald Guide, we have included other significant historical information for reference purposes as space permitted. There is a list of this type of content at the end of the Table of Contents. Annual award winners are shown for the BBWAA awards with voting totals. Other important major league and minor

TribuTe To buck oNeilNo review of the events in baseball in 2006 and 2007 would be complete without a reflection on the life of a very special man: Buck ONeil. ONeil, who died on October 7, 2006, was far more than a peerless ambassador for the game. He embodied the soul of the National Pastime, as Kansas City Star columnist Joe Posnanski framed him in his bestselling book, The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck ONeils America. Readers here are likely well acquainted with ONeils legacy and his uplifting messagea testament to how successful Buck was over the years as he tirelessly shared his passion for the game while raising awareness of our countrys shameful history of race relations. As a star Negro League player and manager as well as a pioneering big-league baseball coach and scout, ONeil displayed uncommon dignity and grace. He was beloved by those fortunate enough to hear him speak and, in the truest spirit of the famous civil rights anthem, ONeil overcame much prejudice and hatred. As a longtime voting member of the Veterans Committee of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, ONeil was instrumental in seeing that many great players from the Negro Leagues were finally enshrined in Cooperstown. Tragically, ONeil himself was slighted by the special committee on the Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues that elected 17 players, executives, and pioneers from the era of black baseball in February 2006. Therefore, it is only fitting that, even in death, the ever gracious ONeil would open up doors to those who have been excluded in the past. In the wake of the controversial vote, many steps were taken to acknowledge ONeils legacy. In response to a multitude of requests from people around the country seeking to recognize ONeils lifetime contributions to the game, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in the summer of 2006 launched the Thanks a Million, Buck campaign to raise funds for the John Jordan Buck ONeil Education and Research Center. The new facility will be part of an expansion of the NLBM and will be built at the historic Paseo YMCA in Kansas City, the birthplace of the Negro National League. ONeil was also posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian honor. The Kansas City Royals have vowed keep his memory alive on a daily basis with the Buck ONeil Legacy Seat promotion in which a deserving member of the community is lauded for humanitarian contribution that exemplifies ONeils magnificent spirit.. In October 2007 the Hall of Fame announced the creation of the Buck ONeil Lifetime Achievement Award honoring an individual whose extraordinary efforts enhanced baseballs positive impact on society; has broadened the games appeal; and whose character, integrity and dignity are comparable to the qualities exhibited by ONeil. The board of directors of the Hall of Fame will announce awards at its discretion, though not more frequently than once every three yearsan unnecessary constraint that devalues the intent and the prestige of award itself. How can someone determine in advance the number of people deserving of the award? Those who have earned recognition should get it, whether that means four awards are given within three years or that no awards are given for a decade. This summer, ONeil will be the first recipient of the eponymous honor. A statue of the great man known to millions simply as Buck will also be unveiled during the annual induction ceremonies in July. Better late than never, but it would be better if ONeil were also a full-fledged member of the Hall of Fame as he truly deserves.
