New Titles Spring/Summer

2012

Welcome to the Emerald Spring/Summer Books Catalogue for 2012.This season, I’m delighted to provide a comprehensive catalogue of the many new titles we’ll be publishing over the year. Our growing reputation for delivering high quality is reflected in the wider recognition our works are receiving in the global community and in the contribution they are making to education, the workplace and researchers at large. We are continuously looking for new opportunities to further strengthen our offering and this catalogue presents a number of new releases in key areas of interest, notably Education, Strategy and Library and Information Studies. These new titles are a valuable addition to our portfolio and include Going Global: The Landscape for Policy Makers and Practitioners in Tertiary Education. This title brings together a number of experts in the field, each with their own unique perspectives on international education, and is published in partnership with the British Council. We’re also pleased to launch new editions of some of our most celebrated titles, such as Looking for Information: A Survey of Research on Information Seeking, Needs and Behaviour, now in its third edition, and An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing, Sixth Edition. Widely regarded as essential texts, these books have been refreshed and updated to reflect the latest developments in their respective fields. Finally, I’d just like to mention a growing area of interest very closely aligned to our own operating vision: sustainability. Our new transport series, Transport and Sustainability, launches this season. Featuring contributions from the developed and developing world, the first volume in the series, Cycling and Sustainability, explores the reasons why this most sustainable form of transportation struggles to become mainstream in many cultures. Another new title of note, Contemporary Issues in Sustainability Accounting, Assurance and Reporting, will appeal to accounting practitioners, analysts, stakeholder groups, investors, academics and environmental and special interest groups. These are just a few examples of what you can expect in the pages to follow. I hope you enjoy browsing and invite you to contact us at [email protected] if you have any ideas for new titles or suggestions you’d like to make.

Accounting in AsiaResearch in Accounting in Emerging Economies Volume 11

EditorsS. Susela Devi, University of Malaysia, MalaysiaKeith Hooper, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand

SynopsisIn the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and the subsequent major corporate scandals since 2000, research on accounting in Asia has focused primarily on issues of corporate governance. As Asian economies contemplate the convergence of reporting standards by 2011/12, corporate governance reforms are also under way. However, debate is growing as to whether true convergence can be achieved. The papers in this timely volume are interlinked by the central concern of corporate governance and financial reporting quality. The volume advances the debate on implementation issues and theoretical considerations, with studies focusing on a variety of Asian countries, including Bangladesh, China, Jordan, Malaysia and Taiwan. Articles include such topics as: fraudulent financial reporting; emerging market economies; audit report timeliness; the association between corporate governance and audit quality; fair value accounting usefulness and implementation obstacles; and the newly-revised code of ethics for professional accountants in China. Mirroring these concerns, readers will find the papers insightful in terms of theoretical development, practices and policy implications.

Research in FinanceResearch in Finance Volume 28

EditorJohn Kensinger, North Texas University, USA

SynopsisThe theme of this volume is “Dealing with Volatility and Enhancing Performance.” The lead chapter sets the theme by giving insight into using the Chicago Board Option Exchange Volatility Index (CBOE VIX) futures in hedging strategies for equity market investors (and hedge funds). During a time when there is much concern about the perceived volatility of global equity markets, the insights offered here could be reassuring as well as useful. The second chapter offers insights into the efficiency (or lack thereof) of attempts to forecast global earnings. Then, the third chapter offers new insights into an issue that has been important for many decades, but which promises to become more topical in the years to come. That is the question of when and why the people who make the business work should also be the owners. Remaining chapters offer further insights into recent trends in “in-house” mergers/acquisitions activity, purchases and sales of real options, project risk, electricity derivatives, corporate governance in Europe, and emerging markets.

Research on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in AccountingResearch on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting Volume 15

EditorCynthia Jeffrey, Iowa State University, IA, USA

SynopsisResearch on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting is devoted to publishing high-quality research and cases that focus on the professional responsibilities of accountants and how they deal with the ethical issues they face. The series features articles on a broad range of important and timely topics, including professionalism, social responsibility, ethical judgment, and accountability. The professional responsibilities of accountants are broad-based; they must serve clients and user groups whose needs, incentives, and goals may be in conflict. Further, accountants must interpret and apply codes of conduct, accounting and auditing principles, and securities regulations. Compliance with professional guidelines is judgement-based, and characteristics of the individual, the culture, and situations affect how these guidelines are interpreted and applied, as well as when they might be violated. Interactions between accountants, regulators, standard setters, and industries also have ethical components. Research into the nature of these interactions, resulting dilemmas, and how and why accountants resolve them, is the focus of this journal.

Globalisation and Contextual Factors in Accounting: The Case of GermanyStudies in Managerial and Financial Accounting Volume 23

AuthorsEva Heidhues, Macquarie University, AustraliaChris Patel, Macquarie University, Australia

SynopsisThis research monograph critically examines convergence of financial reporting in Germany by taking into account the influence of political, social and economic factors on accounting. This study makes an original and significant contribution by examining issues and biases in the convergence process that may challenge the assumption of superiority, global comparability and universal applicability of International Financial Reporting Standards. Specifically, this monograph critically evaluates convergence by taking into account German accounting development and examines issues concerning the application of professional judgement, which has increasingly been recognized as an important and controversial topic in international accounting. By applying a holistic approach with an emphasis on multiple perspectives, this study shows that accounting research will be enhanced by a critical examination of contextual environments of countries rather than by a focus on measurement, quantification, simplification and categorisation.

Accountability Theory Meets Accountability Practice

EditorsHarald Bergsteiner, Australian Catholic University, Australia

SynopsisRecent failures in the corporate sector are to a large extent a failure of accountability. Unfortunately, accountability tends to be characterised by atomistic research; confusing language; models of limited scope; poor conceptualisation of key constructs; context insensitivity; and a lack of methodological integration. This book not only integrates but substantially adds to the extant accountability literature, providing a holistic view of accountability, show-casing a newly-generated Holistic Accountability Model (HAM). This book clarifies the purposes of accountability; identifies what triggers accountability exchanges; generates a set of well-defined responsibility and accountability constructs; and, via a grounded graphic model, links these constructs to the accountability process and to the influences that impact on this process. Several working models are proposed to help practitioners achieve a better understanding of the extent and nature of their accountability obligations, develop and implement more effective accountability policies and practices, and make better accountability decisions.

Business & Sustainability: Concepts, Strategies and ChangesCritical Studies on Corporate Responsibility, Governance and Sustainability Volume 3

EditorsDr Gabriel Eweje, Massey University, New ZealandDr Martin Perry, Massey University, New Zealand

SynopsisIn recent years’ research on business and sustainability, particular attention has been given to the motivations driving business managers to incorporate social and environmental strategies into their day-to-day business activities. Such research is critical to the evaluation of green management, whether viewed from the perspective of academics, managers, policy makers or business students. This volume aims to assist readers to navigate the conceptual maze surrounding discussions of business and sustainability by offering critical reflection on the state of business action for environmental sustainability and providing evidence about what is actually taking place in real localities and businesses. The chapters in the volume focus on sustainability issues that are critical, topical, and needed at this stage of the discussion. The volume makes three main contributions. First, it offers a critical review of business engagement with sustainability from four perspectives: sustainability as a political project; sustainability as a response to environmental crisis; sustainability as business opportunity; and sustainability as stakeholder management. Second, the volume examines actual experience in terms of the steps being taken by business and how these have affected business performance. Third, the volume provides case studies of individual organizations or institutions that reveal tensions and challenges to progressing sustainable business strategies and that offer insight into the prospects for changing the relationship of business with the environment.

Business Strategy and SustainabilityDevelopments in Corporate Governance and Responsibility Volume 3

EditorsGuler Aras, Yildiz Technical University, TurkeyDavid Crowther, De Montfort University, UK

SynopsisThis volume examines the word that’s on everybody’s lips in business, in government and in society – sustainability. There are of course many aspects of sustainability which might be considered to reflect Brundtland’s three pillars of economic, environmental and social sustainability. Others of course have different definitions, which include such things as governance or supply chain management. Nevertheless, business has recognised the significance of the concept and is responding by developing strategies to cope, although some would say that this is little more than window dressing. The debate continues, however, as to just what is meant by the term sustainability as far as business is concerned and how can this be achieved? This book is designed to address this debate and set it within the context of the global business and societal environment.

The third chapter is an analysis of efforts exerted and utilities obtained in a double lawsuit. Chapter four surveys recent developments in economics of contract interpretation. The fifth chapter examines the impact of changes in foreign exchange legislation on the levels of R&D undertaken by pharmaceutical firms in India. Pricing Behavior and Non-Price Characteristics in the Airline IndustryAdvances in Airline Economics Volume 3

EditorJames Peoples, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA

SynopsisStepped-up competition in the airline industry over the past 40 years has profoundly changed how carriers set fares. Chapters in this volume contribute to our understanding of fare determination in this industry by examining carrier pricing behaviour, such as non-linear pricing, pricing decisions associated with strategic alliances, competition from low cost carriers, and the challenges faced by carriers experiencing financial distress. These contributions present nuanced analyses of fare determination that include new ways of examining whether the prices charged by carriers are consumer welfare-enhancing. Examination of airline carrier pricing only tells part of the story of firm behaviour, as analysis of carriers’ ability to provide quality services is also significant in understanding the economics of this industry. This volume includes chapters examining non-price characteristics of business operations, such as frequency of service, passenger safety, availability of aircraft types for different transportation services, and the geographic distribution of air transportation-related noise by aircraft departures and arrivals at airports.

Hayek in Mind: Hayek’s Philosophical PsychologyAdvances in Austrian Economics Volume 15

EditorLeslie Marsh, University of British Columbia, Canada

SynopsisHayek’s philosophical psychology, as set out in his The Sensory Order (1952) has, for the most part, been neglected. Despite being lauded by computer scientist grandee Frank Rosenblatt and by Nobel prize-winning biologist Gerald Edelman, cognitive scientists -- with a few exceptions -- have yet to discover Hayek’s philosophical psychology. On the other hand, social theorists, Hayek’s traditional disciplinary constituency, have only recently begun to take note and examine the importance of psychology in the complete Hayek corpus. This volume brings together for the first time state-of-the-art contributions from neuroscientists and philosophers of mind as well as economists and social theorists, all critically engaging in many aspects of Hayek’s philosophical psychology.

Missing Data Methods Advances in Econometrics Volume 27, Part A&B

EditorDavid M. Drukker, StataCorps, TX, USA

SynopsisThe papers in this volume cover topics in the econometric approach to missing-data problems. Data can be missing because an individual failed to answer a question or because the laws of nature imply that an individual can only follow one of several possible paths. We refer to the first case as one of missing observations and to the second case as one of unobserved outcomes. This volume reflects the fact that econometricians have been very active in the development and use of methods for unobserved outcomes. The huge interest in these methods caused the volume to be split into parts A and B. The 12 chapters in Part A discuss cross-sectional methods. All the papers derive, survey, or evaluate new methods for handling missing-data problems. Per the current interest in econometrics, 11 of the 12 papers address unobserved-outcome problems. The four chapters in Part B discuss time-series methods. Two chapters comprehensively survey the use of Markov switching models in finance. The third chapter surveys discrete-time and continuous-time models for volatility. The fourth chapter derives a new imputation method for non-stationary panel-data models and compares it with existing methods.

New Advances in Experimental Research on CorruptionResearch in Experimental Economics Volume 15

EditorDanila Serra, Florida State University, FL, USA

SynopsisResearch on corruption has flourished in the last two decades. However, difficulties in both measuring corruption and identifying causal effects have made empirical research challenging. In recent years, the application of experimental methods to the measurement and study of corruption has significantly contributed to our understanding of how corruption takes place in a number of settings, as well as how corruption responds to different monetary and non-monetary incentives. This volume provides a comprehensive review of the empirical evidence on corruption generated by recent laboratory and field experiments conducted by economists and political scientists.

Action Research for Sustainable Development in a Turbulent World

EditorOrtrun Zuber-Skerritt, Griffith University, Australia

SynopsisThis book presents and celebrates over 20 years of Action Learning and Action Research (ALAR) through stories, experiences, reflections and specific works of key proponents of and participants in Action Learning and Action Research World Congresses. Authors discuss wide-ranging possibilities and argue for the benefits of action research for sustainable development and problem solving in a turbulent world in the 21st century. They practise what they preach: collaborative, participatory action research based on learning outcomes from projects, discussion and debate. All chapters argue for, justify and explain the need for a shift in approaches to learning and development – from technical, managerial and controlling, to emancipatory, critical, ethical and humanist approaches – to achieve sustainable and robust outcomes in a turbulent world. The book is the first to present action research as a solution to and integration of economic, social, philosophical and ecological systems for problem solving and sustainable development in this troubled world of the 21st century.

Discretionary Behavior and Performance in Educational Organizations: The Missing Link in Educational Leadership and ManagementAdvances in Educational Administration Volume 13

EditorsIbrahim Duyar, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, USAAnthony H. Normore, California State University, Dominguez Hills, USA

SynopsisThis volume of Advances in Educational Administration examines discretionary behavior/performance, an emerging yet critical phenomenon for educational organizations to be effective in responding to the complex expectations of the 21st century. Discretionary behavior refers to the employee behavior that is not directly or explicitly recognized by the formal reward system, and in the aggregate promotes the efficient and effective functioning of the organization. Discretionary behaviors of the educational workforce can contribute to maintenance and enhancement of the social and psychological organizational context which supports the task performance and organizational effectiveness.

Living on the Boundaries: Urban Marginality in National and International ContextsAdvances in Education in Diverse Communities Volume 8

EditorCarol Camp-Yeakey, Washington University in St Louis, MO, USA

SynopsisGiven the increasing urbanization of the world’s population, how people thrive and survive in high density urban environments is a topic of profound interest to nation states and governments. Books have focused on ‘poverty and place’ and ‘geography of opportunity,’ questioning the influence of neighborhood environs on the future social mobility of those who inhabit those neighborhoods. This anthology describes and analyzes the living conditions of marginalized persons in cities and neighborhoods across the globe and the consequential impact on their future social mobility. Chapters focus on key issues that include immigration, educational underachievement, urban renewal, public health, immigration, homelessness, environmental issues, race, segregation, and the marginality of urban youth and economically disadvantaged groups.

As the World Turns: Implications of Global Shifts in Higher Education for Theory, Research and PracticeAdvances in Education in Diverse Communities Volume 7

EditorsWalter R. Allen, University of California – Los Angeles, USAMarguerite Bonous-Hammarth, National SAPAA Knowledge Community, CA, USA Robert T. Teranishi, NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, USA

SynopsisAs the World Turns examines two of the major problems confronting higher education in this modern world:1) Access to higher education remains a persistent problem for

disadvantaged students around the world2) Universities that are highly segregated by race, culture, language,

nationality, or immigration status have lower achievement for disadvantaged students – who are also more often targets of discrimination.

This volume compares discriminated, underrepresented and excluded groups in universities around the globe; identifying personal, group, institutional and societal factors related to persistent inequality. Through a consortium of international scholars, the chapters present studies on minority student experiences and achievement, asking whether and how universities:1) exhibit difference, diversity and inequality; 2) integrate multiple social groups; 3) encourage respect between diverse communities; and 4) use diversity to enhance student learning. This volume demonstrates how diversity and equity help advance academic excellence in global higher education.

Perspectives on Evaluating Criminal Justice and CorrectionsAdvances in Program Evaluation Volume 13

EditorsErica Bowen, Coventry University, UKSarah Brown, Coventry University, UK

SynopsisA comprehensive and authoritative overview of issues relating to the evaluation of criminal justice/corrections “interventions”, this unique reference draws on a variety of theoretical, cultural and epistemological perspectives with authors from a range of disciplines and countries. It begins by looking at the purpose of evaluation within criminal justice systems as a historical and conceptual background. Methods outlined for evaluating criminal justice focus on educating readers about the design decisions they may face as evaluators, enabling them to make informed decisions when choosing designs that are not necessarily optimal. It raises the question of who evaluation is for, and a clearly informed discussion of the importance of the full range of stakeholders involved in evaluation and the potential impact of participating in evaluations on different stakeholders is presented. With insight into successful and unsuccessful evaluation from the perspective of those who are being evaluated, and a critical examination of the methodological and conceptual difficulties involved in identifying “effects”, this book concludes by looking ahead to the future of criminal justice evaluation.

Narrative Inquirers in the Midst of Meaning-making: Interpretive Acts of Teacher EducatorsAdvances in Research on Teaching Volume 16

EditorsDixie Keyes, Arkansas State University, USAVicki Dea Ross, Northern Arizona University, USAElaine Chan, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA

SynopsisNarrative Inquirers in the Midst of Meaning-making: Interpretive Acts of Teacher Educators illustrates interim narrative field texts of identity as “teacher educator stories” and demonstrates how researchers utilize common places of temporality, sociality, and place in analyzing narratives. It describes conceptualizations of narrative research processes, bringing forward narrative tools and methods of layering narratives from experienced narrative researchers. Through the metaphor of braided rivers, the chapters are woven together through unique chapter interim dialogues which spotlight the insights discovered within the three-dimensional inquiry space. From chapters on the temporal dimension of narrative inquiry, on burrowing and broadening through narrative, on openness and inconclusivity in interpretation, on plotlines discovered through the interpretive tool of chronotypes, and on the cross-cultural interpretation of field texts, researchers and teacher educators can reach new conclusions about the ontology and epistemology of narrative research, in the midst of meaning-making.

Misbehavior Online in Higher Education Cutting-edge Technologies in Higher Education Volume 5

EditorsLaura A. Wankel, Northeastern University, MA, USACharles Wankel, St John’s University, NY, USA

SynopsisAs interaction in higher education among faculty, staff, students, and others becomes ever more digital, the welter of new online communication technologies has provided many unintentional opportunities for indiscipline and misconduct. As a result of this unfortunate increase in misbehaviour, administrators and instructors in higher education are increasingly being called upon to remedy and forestall such actions. Misbehavior Online in Higher Education is rich in contemporary case studies, analytical reports, and up-to-date research, providing detailed overviews of various misbehavior, including cyberbullying, cyberstalking, cyberslacking, and privacy invasion, hacking, cheating, teasing, and enhanced prejudicial attitudes. The development of approaches to addressing these problems is discussed and examples are provided. The book also anticipates emerging problematic behaviors and explores the creation of new policies, programmes, facilities, and technologies to tackle such problems.

Black Female Undergraduates on Campus: Successes and ChallengesDiversity in Higher Education Volume 12

EditorsCrystal Renée Chambers, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, USARhonda Vonshay Sharpe, Bennett College, NC, USA

SynopsisSince 1976, increased attention has been paid to the diminishing numbers of Black males in higher education, and rightly so: the total numerical enrolments of Black female undergraduates have outstripped their male counterparts by a factor of nearly 2 to 1. Since intervention, however, the enrolment growth rate among Black males (60%) exceeded that of Black females (40%) (NCES, 2008). Needless to say, this good news was welcomed by many. However, as Cole and Guy-Sheftall (2003) have pointed out, it may be misguided to assume that improving the status of Black men will single-handedly solve all the complex problems facing African-American communities. Are we indirectly neglecting Black females? And what of their future? The purpose of Black Female Undergraduates on Campus is to identify both successes and challenges faced by Black female students accessing and matriculating through institutions of higher education. In illuminating the interactive complexities between persons and place, this volume is aimed towards garnering an understanding of the educational trajectories and experiences of Black females, independent of and in comparison with their peers. Special attention is paid to women pursuing careers in the high demand fields of teacher education and STEM.

Transforming Troubled Lives: Strategies and Interventions for Children with Social, Emotional and Behavioural DifficultiesInternational Perspectives on Inclusive Education Volume 2

EditorsJohn Visser, University of Northampton, UKHarry Daniels, University of Bath, UKTed Cole, University of Bath, UK

SynopsisAs inclusive practice becomes more embedded in the policy and practice of schools around the globe, there remain groups of children and young people for whom education is a problem because of their behaviours, poor emotional development and lack of social skills. These pupils often display disaffection towards education and are to be found on the margins of mainstream schools – too often they drop out of schooling altogether. Drawing on papers and discussions at the 3rd International Conference of SEBDA in 2010 at Keble College, Oxford, UK, the papers in this volume both describe and critically examine strategies and interventions in meeting the educational and wellbeing needs of these children and young people. The contributions provide insights into the ways in which these pupils can remain engaged, or even be persuaded to re-engage, in education provided in both mainstream and specialist schools.

Hard Labour? Academic Work and the Changing Landscape of Higher Education International Perspectives on Higher Education Research Volume 7

AuthorsTanya Fitzgerald, La Trobe University, AustraliaJulie White, La Trobe University, AustraliaHelen Gunter, Manchester University, UK

SynopsisHigher education institutions (HEIs) have experienced massive changes in the past three decades. Across the UK, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, new public management has introduced corporate governance structures, strategic plans, performance management, quality assurance processes, a client-focused approach to students and curriculum, and a commodification of higher education that has seen an unprecedented growth in international student numbers. Increased numbers of HEIs have stimulated a variety of challenges for administrators, academics, students and the broader community. Drawing on data from the UK, Australia and New Zealand, this book addresses how policies of successive Labour governments have decreased the autonomy of academics and increased regimes of surveillance, radically altering how academics think about and engage in their intellectual work. It provokes the reader to think critically about the emergence of corporate styles of governance, management and leadership in HEIs and ways in which the demands of new public management and the knowledge economy have shaped and re-shaped scholarly work and identity.

Beyond the Nation-State: The Reconstruction of Nationhood and CitizenshipResearch in Sociology of Education Volume 18

AuthorDavid H. Kamens, George Mason University, VA, USA

SynopsisThe book examines the effects of education in creating global citizens who share a world culture. This occurs within an international system that still remains decentralized, composed of independent nation-states as major actors. Prof. Kamens argues that, as globalization intensifies, this system of nation-states becomes more saturated and dense with structure. Intensified globalization has produced a world society, thanks to the spread of global capitalism, education, democracy and bureaucracy. The upshot is that world culture travels quickly and produces “recipes” for the development of an “imagined community” that has increasing commonalities across societies. The book examines the role of education in diffusing such attitudes and models, as global citizens confront national institutions.

Entrepreneurial ActionAdvances in Entrepreneurship, Firm Emergence and Growth Volume 14

EditorsAndrew C. Corbett, Babson College, USAProfessor Jerome A. Katz, Saint Louis University, USA

SynopsisVolume 14 addresses the central issue of entrepreneurial action: while many factors are important to the phenomenon of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship does not happen until someone takes action!Leading scholars address this through cutting edge thinking on entrepreneurial action via concepts such as “world-making” and entrepreneurial agency. Two empirical chapters examine how conditions of uncertainty shape the action that underlies opportunity creation and how specific venture creation actions effect nascent entrepreneurial efforts. An integrative model of the cognitive processes provides new insights regarding the importance of inflection points. The role of institutions in entrepreneurial action is examined in the case of state-sponsored social protection and university-based technology transfer systems. Applying effectual and linear models of entrepreneurial action in college classrooms is also explored. The final chapter examines the conceptual foundations and research challenges that lie ahead for scholars investigating entrepreneurial action.

Globalizing China: The Influence, Strategies and Successes of Chinese Returnee

EditorDr Huiyao Wang, China Western Returned Scholars Association, China

SynopsisIn recent years, a new spectacular group of entrepreneurs in China called Chinese Returnee Entrepreneurs (CREs) has emerged. Not only have they contributed enormously to the rapid growth of the Chinese economy, but they also have connected China to the outside world in today’s globalized economy. This book examines the literature on the returnee phenomenon and assesses the impact and influence of Chinese Returnee Entrepreneurs. This is the first major empirical study to evaluate the impact of CREs in the Chinese globalization process. It examines the roles, drivers, strategies, and performances of CREs with regard to environment-strategy linkages in a strong emerging economy. The research highlights the significance of strategies, drivers, constraints, and performance relations for CREs success in shaping their operational framework in China. The findings of this study suggest that CREs have become a driving force in Chinese globalization, dominating the internet, IT and media industries. They have become leading players in the Chinese hi-tech industries, as well as the best team players and social capital users of international guanxi. The study reveals that CREs’ competitive advantages lie in their strategies utilizing technology, team work, market approach, social connections, professional qualifications, and international working experience.

New Technology-Based Firms in the New Millennium: Strategic and Educational OptionsNew Technology-Based Firms in the New Millennium Volume 9

EditorsProfessor Aard Groen, Nikos, Univeristy of Twente, Enschede, The NetherlandsProfessor Ray Oakey, Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, UKProfessor Peter van der Sijde, University of Groningen, The NetherlandsDr Gary Cook, University of Liverpool, UK

SynopsisThis volume is the latest edition of an international edited book series based on the formation and growth problems of High Technology Small Firms (HTSFs) begun in 1993. This body of work is unique, and maps the evolution of research in this area through almost two decades of academic research and government policy towards a sector that is the key to the future prosperity of developed and developing notational economies throughout the world. In this the latest volume, there are one major and two subsidiary themes that have emerged from the best papers to be presented at the HTSF Conference held at the University of Twente at Enshede in May 2008. Following a contextual introduction by the Editors, seven of the chapters are concerned with the key issue of strategy, which is always a key concern for HTSFs, as they seek to find the best way to getting their products to the market. Indeed, a further two papers are concerned with the requirements of international marketing, while a final three papers deal with aspects of education for HTSF founders.

Transnational Migration, Gender and RightsAdvances in Ecopolitics Volume 10

EditorsRagnhild Sollund, University of Oslo, Norway (Volume Editor)Liam Leonard, IT Sligo, Republic of Ireland (Series Editor)

SynopsisThis volume of the Advances in Ecopolitics series examines the impact of the recent global increase in migration from poor and conflict-ridden states to more affluent peaceful regions of the world. Such migration is, in part, constituted by refugees and asylum seekers, while also constituted by labour migrants seeking to improve their lives and future prospects through their work power. Regulations apply that can have varying impacts on migrants’ manoeuvring possibilities and rights, and can leave them vulnerable to exploitation. This book examines the vulnerability caused by migration, in particular, the vulnerability of women that may cause forced migration, and the ways in which this is dealt with by national authorities in affluent European states. Following an introductory chapter on transnational migration, gender and human rights, specific chapters highlight: gendered work and migration regimes; the framing of anti-trafficking efforts in Norway; deprofessionalisation and informality in the market for commoditised care; and exploring intersectionality, systems and capitals. The book concludes with a discussion of rights, gender and the embodiment of migration.

Enterprising Communities: Grassroots Sustainability InnovationsAdvances in Ecopolitics Volume 9

EditorAnna Davies, Trinity College Dublin, Republic of Ireland

SynopsisThis book provides an internationally grounded and critical review of grassroots sustainability enterprises, specifically focusing on the processes that lead to their formation, the governing context that shapes their evolution, the benefits they create and the challenges that they face in different contexts. This is the first internationally focused study of grassroots sustainability enterprises that covers such a range of environmental sectors. For the first time grassroots sustainability enterprises and their actions and impact receive comprehensive academic analysis from the perspective of their contribution towards more resilient development. The book begins by defining the term and placing it in context, looking at contemporary agendas in sustainability innovation and enterprise, and sustainability impacts and grassroots enterprises. It then examines a variety of grassroots sustainability enterprises, such as low impact housing in the UK, eco-villages in Ireland, community gardening in Germany and turtle conservation in Costa Rica. It concludes by looking ahead to the future at governing frameworks for grassroots sustainability enterprises and smart green clean-tech economy.

Climate Change Modelling for Local Adaptation in the Hindu Kush - Himalayan RegionCommunity, Environment and Disaster Risk Management Volume 11

EditorsArmando Lamadrid, Center for International Climate and Environmental Research, Oslo (CICERO), NorwayIlan Kelman, Center for International Climate and Environmental Research, Oslo (CICERO), Norway

SynopsisThis book presents a portrait of the social advantages and limitations of climate change-related modeling in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region. Physical systems modeling – such as of climate, weather, water, and soil – can be useful planning tools, and are essential to the forecasts and projections used operationally for decisions on climate and development. However, these models and their limitations are rarely discussed in terms of how they are interpreted, misinterpreted, used, not used, needed and not needed by society at the local level for climate change adaptation. This publication addresses the implied but largely uncritiqued relationships between scientific modeling knowledge and local adaptation responses. It also presents theoretical perspectives on modeling and adaptation, supported by case studies of model use, non-use, interpretation and misinterpretation in the HKH region for application at the local level. It provides a critical angle into the value of modeling at multiple decision-making scales in society, but focused on local needs. Case studies are presented from a variety of HKH countries, as defined by ICIMOD (which includes Bangladesh and Myanmar).

Community Based Disaster Risk ReductionCommunity, Environment and Disaster Risk Management Volume 10

EditorRajib Shaw, Kyoto University, Japan

SynopsisCommunities are at the core of disaster risk reduction (DRR), and community-based approaches are getting increasing focus in national DRR plans. In the case of past disasters, communities were always the first responders, and took leading roles in the post-disaster recovery. The roles of communities in pre-disaster preparedness are also very important. This is the first comprehensive book available on CBDRR (community-based disaster risk reduction) which outlines both research and practice, citing field examples and research results. It provides an overview of the subject and looks at the role of governments, NGOs, academics and corporate sectors in community-based disaster risk reduction. It proceeds to examine experiences from Asian and African countries, and concludes by looking ahead to the future perspective of CBDRR.

Environment Disaster Linkages Community, Environment and Disaster Risk Management Volume 9

EditorsRajib Shaw, Kyoto Univetsity, JapanTran Phong, Hue University, Vietnam

SynopsisDisaster management has historically focused on reactive approaches, but a shift to proactive approaches is crucial for addressing concerns raised by the changing environment. A prime reason for the absence of proactive approaches in disaster/hazard management is the uncertainty or ambiguity present in the links between the environment and the hazards. This is the first book to focus on explicit linkages between the changing environment and disasters and suggests better approaches towards disaster management. A ready-reference for field practitioners, it combines academic research and field practices and covers areas such as: elements of environmental entry (water-related disasters, desertification and land degradation, typhoon risk management, catastrophic flood and forest management, and coastal issues); impacts of environment and disaster (livelihoods impacts, human health: post-disaster waste management); and strategies, planning and the way forward (climate change adaptation as a planning tool, urban planning and land use planning, mangrove management as a coastal planning tool, and environment disaster education and risk communication).

Rethinking Misbehaviour and ResistanceAdvances in Industrial & Labor Relations Volume 19

EditorsLucy Taksa, Macquarie University, Sydney, AustraliaAlison Barnes, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia

SynopsisThis volume challenges understandings of organisational misbehaviour, looking beyond traditional conceptions of the nexus between misbehaviour and resistance in the workplace by reconsidering misbehaviour from a range of different perspectives and disciplinary traditions, including history, employment relations, sociology, management, entrepreneurship, marketing, legal studies and film studies. Chapters consider behaviours not only of workers but also of managers, entrepreneurs and consumers. The book traverses dimensions of misbehaviour and resistance across time and geographical space through a number of case studies that examine behaviours in a range of different places, industries and sectors. In this way it extends analysis to actors outside of the workers who have largely been the focus of existing studies. The volume adds to the emerging body of evidence that disturbs assumptions of consensus and conformity in organisations.

An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing 6th edition

EditorBrian C.J. Moore, University of Cambridge, UK

SynopsisThis sixth edition of An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing has been thoroughly updated with new sections added covering perceptual methods of estimating basilar-membrane compression, informational masking of non-speech and speech sounds, experiments and theories concerning pitch perception, and the perception of speech in complex auditory environments. The leading textbook in the field of auditory perception (psychoacoustics), its longevity and loyal readership can be attributed to the accessible manner in which it describes the relationships between the characteristics of the sounds that enter the ear and the sensations that they produce. Topics covered include the physics of sound, the physiology of the auditory system, frequency selectivity and masking, loudness perception, temporal analysis, pitch perception, sound localization, timbre perception, the perceptual organization of complex auditory “scenes”, speech perception, and practical applications such as hearing aids, cochlear implants and high-fidelity sound reproduction. It also includes extensive references to recent research, so that those interested in a specific area can readily obtain more detailed information.

University Writing: Selves and Texts in Academic SocietiesStudies in Writing Volume 24

EditorsMontserrat Castelló, Ramon Llull University, Barcelona, SpainChristiane Donahue, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA

SynopsisUniversity Writing: Selves and Texts in Academic Societies examines new trends in the different theoretical perspectives (cognitive, social and cultural) and derived practices in the activity of writing in higher education. These perspectives are analyzed on the basis of their conceptualization of the object – academic and scientific writing; of the writers – their identities, attitudes and perspectives, be it students, teachers or researchers; and of the derived instructional practices - the ways in which the teaching-learning situations may be organized. The volume samples writing research traditions and perspectives both in Europe and in the USA, working on their situated nature and avoiding easy or superficial comparisons in order to enlarge our understanding of common problems and some emerging possibilities. In addition, the volume promotes a dialogue between these perspectives and traditions and, by addressing the identified needs and unsolved questions, bridges gaps and moves forward in our knowledge regarding academic writing activities in higher education settings. University Writing: Selves and Texts in Academic Societies is addressed to researchers, advanced students and those academics interested in learning about European and North-American writing research traditions in dialogue and about how to take the individual and social perspectives in writing into account.

The End of Argument Structure?Syntax and Semantics Volume 38

EditorsMaría Cristina Cuervo, University of Toronto, CanadaYves Roberge, University of Toronto, Canada

SynopsisThe papers included in this volume explore current issues and re-assess generally accepted premises on the relationship between lexical meaning and the morphosyntax of sentences. A central question in the study of language concerns the mechanisms by which the participants in an event described by a sentence come to occupy their positions and acquire their interpretation. The papers confront two competing approaches to this question. A long-standing approach is based on the assumption that it is the lexical meaning of a verb that determines, albeit indirectly, the basic properties of sentence structure at the level of verbal meaning, including asymmetric relations, thematic roles, case, and agreement. An alternative approach claims that, to a large extent, the syntax itself establishes possible verbal meanings on the basis of the legitimate relations that can exist between syntactic heads, complements, and specifiers.

Web Search Engine ResearchLibrary and Information Science

EditorDirk Lewandowski, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany

SynopsisWeb Search Engine Research, edited by Dirk Lewandowski, provides an understanding of web search engines from the unique perspective of Library and Information Science. The book explores a range of topics including retrieval effectiveness, user satisfaction, the evaluation of search interfaces, the impact of search on society, reliability of search results, query log analysis, user guidance in the search process, and the influence of search engine optimization (SEO) on results quality. While research in computer science has mainly focused on technical aspects of search engines, LIS research is centred on users’ behaviour when using search engines and how this interaction can be evaluated. LIS research provides a unique perspective in intermediating between the technical aspects, user aspects and their impact on their role in knowledge acquisition. This book is directly relevant for researchers and practitioners in library and information science, computer science, including web researchers.

Toward a Better Understanding of the Role of Value in Markets and MarketingReview of Marketing Research Volume 9

EditorsStephen L. Vargo, University of Hawaii at Manoa, USARobert F. Lusch, University of Arizona, USA

SynopsisIn their 2004 article “Evolving to a new dominant logic for marketing,” Vargo and Lusch established the related principles that value is always co-created and, thus, firms cannot deliver value, but only develop compelling value propositions. This perspective is now known as “service-dominant (S-D) logic.” Subsequent S-D logic work has suggested that value not only is always co-created but it also requires the integration of resources from multiple sources and thus is contextually contingent, since each instance of value creation involves the availability, integration, and use of a different combination of resources. This repositioning of value, from a static concept of something embedded in the output of a “producer” to be “consumed,” to a dynamic concept of a co-created outcome in ever-changing, networked systems, can be seen throughout the manuscripts in this volume.

Strategic Marketing in Tourism Services

EditorsRodoula H. Tsiotsou, University of Macedonia, GreeceRonald E. Goldsmith, Florida State University, USA

SynopsisTourism services all over the world currently face rapid changes due to market globalization, intensified competition and the dynamic evolution of new technologies. Moreover, it is expected that tourism will be one of the industries that will be most affected by the current recession. The long-term success of tourism services in such a fiercely competitive and financially difficult environment depends not only on being able to satisfy customers’ needs and desires, but also on strategically responding to current global challenges. Therefore, strategic marketing becomes a necessary practice in contemporary tourism services firms. Strategic Marketing in Tourism Services focuses on marketing strategies implemented in tourism services firms and includes a collection of papers related to specific marketing strategies. The book presents the application of specific marketing strategies such as experiential marketing, branding, target marketing, relationship marketing and e-marketing in tourism. Furthermore, it presents the strategic responses of each tourism sub-sector – hospitality, air transport, tour operation, travel agencies and the tourism destinations – from various countries around the world.

Reinventing hierarchy and bureaucracy – from the bureau to network organizationsResearch in the Sociology of Organizations Volume 35

EditorsThomas Diefenbach, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), JapanRune Todnem By, Staffordshire University, UK

SynopsisThis special volume brings together leading scholars in the field of organisation studies to reflect on the universal phenomena of hierarchy (vertical organisation of tasks) and bureaucracy (rule-bound execution of tasks). The result is a colourful kaleidoscope of thought-provoking, critical and refreshingly non-mainstream analysis of hierarchy and bureaucracy. The chapters range from minute accounts of a single case to broader historical analysis, from the “classical” journal paper to essay-style elaborations. The first section provides fundamentals and historical accounts of bureaucracy, highlighting negative and positive effects of bureaucracy and a differentiated picture with some future outlook. The second section focuses on the analysis of organisational, cultural and socio-psychological aspects of hierarchy and bureaucracy by interrogating hierarchy in contemporary work via a new framework, exploring the cultural fantasy of hierarchy and sovereignty, and examining subordinates’ challenges to organisational hierarchy. The final section comprises two chapters which provide some alternative views on, and alternatives to, hierarchy. One is alarming, the other is puzzling.

Rethinking Power in Organizations, Institutions, and MarketsResearch in the Sociology of Organizations Volume 34

EditorsDavid Courpasson, EM Lyon, FranceDamon Golsorkhi, ESC Rouen, FranceJeffrey Sallaz, University of Arizona, USA

SynopsisOrganizations are central actors of modern society. No understanding of our world is complete without a theory of how they work. This insight is grounded in the foundational texts of classical social theory, and it remains as true as ever today. Be they multinational corporations or start-up firms, established political parties or insurgent social movements, successful organizations must engage in power-projects. Such is the overarching argument of this volume, a collection of papers by many of the world’s leading social scientists and organizational scholars. Many contributions analyze empirical data to generate cutting-edge arguments about the actual working of organizations, institutions, and markets. Other papers represent original theoretical arguments that propose new ways to see and study power. Topics addressed include the nature of post-bureaucratic (polyarchic) organizations, strategic action within fields, identity and contentious politics, and emergent forms of resistance. Collectively, the papers that comprise this volume set a fresh agenda for the study of power in and across organizations and institutions.

Social Production and ReproductionAdvances in Gender Research Volume 16

EditorsMarcia Texler Segal, Indiana University Southeast at New Albany, IN, USAEsther Ngan-ling Chow, American University, DC, USAVasilikie Demos, University of Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA

SynopsisThis volume focuses on the gendered interfaces of the public and private spheres of life. In the twenty-first century these are no longer separate, as women and men move from one to the other in the course of their daily lives and their life spans. The chapters examine the ways in which individuals, families and societies strive to balance paid and unpaid labour, engage in parenting and accomplish other care-work, seek education for themselves and their children, and respond to the mass media, sometimes under conditions of poverty or violence and often across international boundaries. These are the ways social life is produced and reproduced, protested and commodified by women and men and the social systems and constraints within which they act and interact. Questions addressed by the authors are framed in terms of current gender theory and the impact of social structures. The resilience and agency of women are demonstrated by a group of international scholars through the comparison and analysis of empirical data from several countries, including the UK, USA, Canada, Taiwan, Indonesia, Iran, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain and the People’s Republic of China.

Firms, Boards and Gender Quotas: Comparative PerspectivesComparative Social Research Volume 29

EditorsFredrik Engelstad, University of Oslo, NorwayMari Teigen, Institute of Social Research, Oslo, Norway

SynopsisDuring the last decade gender equality in business life has become a hot topic. One impetus is the recent reform in Norway, prescribing gender quotas to the boards of directors of public companies. Shortly after the Norwegian reform was enacted, several other European countries have adopted similar reforms. This is the only volume where this gender quota reform is thoroughly discussed from an economic, political and philosophical point of view. It looks at whether the economic performance of companies is influenced, positively or negatively. The reasons why it has been embraced in some countries and rejected in others are analyzed. Moreover, viability of the gender quota reform is assessed by comparisons with other political interventions in business life in Scandinavia, of which some have been a failure, whereas others have shown themselves to be successful. This specific reform also serves as a backdrop to other themes related to gender and business. This volume provides a broad comparative study of the access of women to top positions in business in Europe. It also gives detailed discussions of gender relations in family businesses both in East Asia and in Europe.

New Wars, New Militaries, New Soldiers? Conflicts, the Armed Forces and the Soldierly SubjectContributions to Conflict Management, Peace Economics and Development Volume 19

EditorsGerhard Kümmel, Bundeswehr Institute of Social Sciences (SOWI), GermanyJoseph Soeters, Netherlands Defence Academy, The Netherlands

SynopsisThis collection of sociological studies on the armed forces and conflict resolution deals with three types of developments the military faces. First, the type of conflicts which the military finds itself in has become less predictable and more erratic, and hence, ways to respond are not easy to plan and organize. Apart from “regular” interstate warfare, the military nowadays is increasingly prepared to cope with a whole gamut of irregular conflicts, terrorist threats and attacks, peacekeeping operations and – indeed – warlike missions.

Emerging and Potential Trends in Public Management: An Age of AusterityCritical Perspectives on International Public Sector Management Volume 1

EditorsProfessor John Diamond, Edge Hill University, UKProfessor Joyce Liddle, Teesside University, UK

SynopsisChallenging some of the established practices of public policy and administration, which have been called into question in recent years by the financial and banking crises of 2008, the authors specifically seek to investigate public managers acting in the interests of civil society and invite those engaged in the practice of public management to share their ideas and informed thinking with a wider readership. This series then examines the emerging trends in public sector management and endeavours to anticipate the directions they may take.

Political Power and Social Theory Political Power and Social Theory Volume 23

EditorJulian Go, Boston University, USA

SynopsisAs economic stagnation freezes the globe; capitalism is increasingly questioned; war, revolution and political instability unsettled the Middle East; and President Obama’s campaign for the Presidency looms, Volume 23 of Political Power and Social Theory reflects on these and related issues. Chapters in this volume discuss the meaning of revolution, the origins of neoliberalism in India, identity formation in a Chicago social movement, the Palestinian National Question, and the Black middle-class in the USA. Additionally, in the Scholarly Controversy section, Fred Block questions whether the concept of “capitalism” should be problematized entirely.

Biopolicy: The Life Sciences and Public PolicyResearch in Biopolitics Volume 10

EditorsAlbert Somit, Southern Illinois University, USASteven A. Peterson, Pennsylvania State University, USA

SynopsisBiology can inform public policy in a number of ways. This volume explores the linkage of the life sciences with policy (what the book refers to as biopolicy). It features two points of departure: the implications of the neurosciences for public policy; and the implications of evolutionary theory for policy making. The first part of the book provides an introduction to the subject of biopolicy as well as the relevance of the brain sciences and evolutionary theory for this subject. The second part considers several case studies of how these points of departure inform our knowledge of policy. Among case studies provided here are the implications for distribution of wealth, the roots of foreign policy, violent behaviour, policy decision making, and the like. In the final analysis, this book provides examples of how the life sciences can inform public policy choices. Research in Biopolitics is the only book series that focuses specifically on the relationship between biology and politics, and provides contemporary research for practitioners, including anthropologists, sociologists, economists, biopolitical researchers, as well as students of law and political science.

Institutional Reforms in the Public Sector: What Did We Learn?Research in Public Policy Analysis and Management Volume 22

Author Mahabat Baimyrzaeva, Monterey Institute of International Studies, USA

SynopsisInstitutional reforms in the public sector have been a vital component of leading international agencies’ development-promotion efforts for several decades. However, donors have not clearly understood how to induce deliberate and desired changes in public sector institutions in recipient countries. Disciplinary fragmentation in social sciences has also been detrimental for understanding complex phenomena such as this and for generating implications for practice. This Volume of Research in Public Policy Analysis and Management seeks to improve understanding of this phenomenon by (1) examining donor-promoted public sector institutional reforms in various countries for the last five decades; (2) analyzing Kyrgyzstan’s experience with such reforms for the last 20 years; and (3) developing theoretical tools for research and practice from a synthesis of scholarship in several disciplines. The book’s findings can be applicable to institutional changes in various settings, ranging from international development and nation-building to domestic public sector reform and organizational change.

Hispanic Migration and Urban Development: Studies from Washington DCResearch in Race and Ethnic Relations Volume 17

EditorEnrique S. Pumar, The Catholic University of America, Washington DC, USA

SynopsisThis volume of Research in Race and Ethnic Relations analyzes the pattern of assimilation and incorporation among the Hispanic population in the Washington DC metro region. Following a comprehensive introduction, looking at theoretical and policy implication, the book consists of two conceptual chapters discussing the literature of ethnic incorporation and assimilation in urban regions, one chapter analyzing demographic trends among the Hispanic population, and four chapters analyzing different issues related to assimilation, in particular the nature of entrepreneurship, civic engagement, political participation, and education among migrants. This book makes a considerable contribution to the literature of emerging gateways in the field of migration and urban development with articles from notable academics and public policy analysts in their respective fields. It is the only comprehensive study of its kind concerning Hispanic migration to the Washington DC region. The majority of other studies in the field are based on data from major metropolitan cities such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Rethinking Agricultural Policy Regimes: Food Security, Climate Change and the Future Resilience of Global AgricultureResearch in Rural Sociology and Development Volume 18

EditorsReider Almås, Centre for Rural Research, Trondheim, NorwayHugh Campbell, University of Otago, New Zealand

SynopsisFor many decades debates about the future of developed world agriculture policy have been dominated by a long political conflict between European/multifunctional policy regimes and the global trend towards trade liberalisation. The stalemate that had emerged between these two positions by 2000 has now been dramatically reconfigured. This book argues that there are four reasons why this area of policy has now reopened to wider debate: The World Food Crisis of 2008-2011 has signalled a potential end to the era of cheap food. The emergence of climate change as a core policy concern has shifted key targets for agricultural policy. New trends towards “neo-productivist” agricultural policy have emerged to challenge multifunctional approaches to agriculture. New academic ideas around resilience of food chains and relevant policy interventions have challenged established approaches to achieving agricultural sustainability. Through international case studies this book evaluates how these new policy challenges are having an impact on specific agricultural policy regimes, and what future lessons might be learned from key policy experiments around neoliberalism and multifunctionality.

Media, Movements, and Political ChangeResearch in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change Volume 33

EditorsJennifer Earl, University of Arizona, USADeana A. Rohlinger, Florida State University, USA

SynopsisThis volume of Research in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change explores the relationships between mass media, social movements, and political change. Since Martin Luther nailed his Theses of Contention on the Wittenberg Church door in 1517, scholars and pundits have noted that the media play an important role in social and political change. This volume advances scholarly understanding of how activists and élites alike use books, newspapers, and internet-enabled technologies to effect change. Chapters include analyses of the role of the media in the (Anti-)Abortion, Globalization, Labour, Townsend, and White Power movements as well as Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. Altogether, this volume suggests new avenues for research, provides new insights into the strategic use and influence of the media, and challenges existing assumptions of media-movement relationships.

Religion, Work, and InequalityResearch in the Sociology of Work Volume 23

EditorLisa Keister, Duke University, USA

SynopsisWork behaviours and inequality in work-based rewards are essential to financial security and general well being. Although the benefits of receiving work-based rewards, such as income, benefits and retirement packages, are significant, they are not enjoyed uniformly. Scholars have invested considerable resources in studying the processes that lead to differential work outcomes, and we know a considerable amount about what places people in the distributions of income and wealth. However, religion is a critical determinant of these outcomes that has attracted little attention. It seems logical that a person’s general approach to the world – their religious beliefs or cultural orientation – would be an important determinant of their wealth. After all, the things we consider important and our operating assumptions about how the world does work and how it should work are certain to affect the goals we pursue, our decisions about critical life events, and, ultimately, how well-off we are. This volume brings together major thinkers in the field of religion, work and inequality to explore current research and to articulate an agenda for better understanding these essential social processes.

Blue Ribbon Papers: Behind the Professional Mask: The Self-Revelations of Leading Symbolic InteractionistsStudies in Symbolic Interaction Volume 38

EditorLonnie Athens, Seton Hall University, NY, USA

SynopsisVolume 38 of Studies in Symbolic Interaction is devoted exclusively to the Blue Ribbon Papers Series, which is under the intellectual leadership of Lonnie Athens. In this issue, Athens presents the autobiographies of scholars who have made significant contributions to the symbolic interactionist approach, over both the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including David Altheide, Paul Atkinson, Kathy Chamaraz, Adele Clarke, Gary Cook, Carolyn Ellis, Martyn Hammersley, John Johnson, Joseph Kotarba, and Laurel Richardson. The contributors were all asked to address the question of how they got into their particular fields of study and later became interactionist? They were also prodded to reveal “who is the person behind the professional mask” by describing why and how they changed over the intellectual journeys that they took in becoming some of the best-known and well-respected advocates of the symbolic-interactionist’s approach in the USA and the UK. These autobiographic reflections and revelations not only shatter the popular stereotype of academics, but also the stereotype of scholars who subscribe to the viewpoint of symbolic interactionism.

Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions Volume 10

EditorsCary L. Cooper, University of Lancaster, UKSydney Finkelstein, Dartmouth College, USA

SynopsisWhat makes the Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions series stand out is its focus on all three characteristics that make up this research field – studies from scholars in different countries, with different research questions, relying on different theoretical perspectives. Such a broad, and inclusive, approach to mergers and acquisitions is not easily replicated in academic journals, with much narrower mandates and metrics. The collections published each year provide cutting edge ideas by leading scholars on a global scale. Doing so not only broadens the questions being studied, but also helps researchers consider the inter-relationships among different perspectives. In the final analysis, the best way to build understanding around a topic as diffuse as mergers and acquisitions is to be both integrative, and expansive, in choice of research questions and theoretical underpinnings. Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions offers this unique perspective, not easily found elsewhere, that will help scholars think about mergers and acquisitions in new ways, building our knowledge base on this critical topic.

Field Guide to Case Study Research in Tourism, Hospitality and LeisureAdvances in Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research Volume 6

EditorsKenneth F. Hyde, AUT University, Auckland, New ZealandChris Ryan, Waikato University, Hamilton, New ZealandArch G. Woodside, Boston College, MA, USA

SynopsisThis field guide shows how to solve the paradox of keeping a researcher’s eyes on the prize of understanding the individual case while viewing the surrounding context. It enables describing, explaining and predicting case (individual and group) behavior, at the same time explaining behavior among a set of cases relevant to a specific context. This truly international guide embraces Herbert Simon’s (Nobel Prize in Economics recipient) insight that a decision results from the conjoining two antecedents in human behavior: cognitive processing of an individual or group, and a given context or problem framing. Changing the context/frame often dramatically affects what cognitive process an individual employs as well as her ability to craft choices and make decisions wisely. Thus, this field guide reports on the necessity of describing and explaining relevant decision contexts and to model/predict decisions and behavior for specific contexts. Divided into six parts it includes chapters on: analysis of texts; how-to-do executive interviews; field interviewing in international contexts; stakeholder participatory research; researching indigenous and marginal peoples; and cross-case analysis.

Knowledge Management in Tourism: Policy and Governance ApplicationsBridging Tourism Theory and Practice Volume 4

EditorsEduardo Fayos-Sola, Ulysses Foundation, University of Valencia, SpainJafar Jafari, University of Wisconsin-Stout, USAJoão Albino Matos de Silva, University of Algarve, Portugal

SynopsisThis book is an outcome of the 2011 UNWTO Ulysses Forum and shares the state of the art in issues of development, climate change, and governance vis-à-vis tourism. It fosters a multidisciplinary reflection on scientific, technological, and procedural approaches to tourism policy, establishing principles and guidelines for governance agendas concerning tourism. The book facilitates a framework for tourism research, codes and voluntary standards as essential instruments for tourism theory and practice, concerning both the public and private sectors, as well as the host communities – the ultimate beneficiaries of tourism. The book assists in developing a roadmap for knowledge formation and its transfer, hence the theme of bridging theory and practice.

Culture and Society in Tourism Contexts Tourism Social Science Volume 17

EditorAntonio Miguel Nogués-Pedregal, Universitas Miguel Hernandez de Elche, Alicante, Spain

SynopsisThis book strives to understand the social and cultural dynamics in Mediterranean tourist destinations through ethnographic examples from Greece, Spain, Egypt, France, Malta and Crete. Migrants, tourists and new residents with different nationalities and personal motivations converge and share with locals in the same locations and/or create new places that mushroom all over the territories (i.e. urbanisations in the coasts). As this occurs the practices and meanings that give sense to daily life seem to blur traditional dichotomic notions such as leisure and labour, residents or locals, nationals or foreigners. The work of several social scientists, from varied backgrounds, over numerous years, using multiple research techniques to observe cultures and societies as they occur in daily practices, is documented here. This book underlines the importance of focusing on the relations among the relations, that is, not simply looking at only one of the possible social pairs among these groups (i.e. tourists-locals; tourist-new residents etc.) but also looking at how the presence of all the groups affects both the whole social and cultural processes and the relations among them.

Transport and Climate Change Transport and Sustainability Volume 2

EditorsTim Ryley, Loughborough University, UKLee Chapman, University of Birmingham, UK

SynopsisTransport accounts for 26 per cent of global CO2 emissions and is one of the few industrial sectors where emissions are still growing. There is a need to consider adaptation, so that society is resilient to the future impacts of climate change on our networks, and a holistic framework for research and investment is required to improve the relationship between transport and climate change. This highly topical volume covers the intersection between transport and climate change. It begins with a comprehensive introduction with definitions of transport and climate change, including mitigation and adaptation, as well as sustainability. It then proceeds to examine the relationship between transport and climate change in two parts. In Part A the role of transport modes at varying spatial dimensions is considered. A range of perspectives on the relationship between transport and climate change is provided in Part B, including economic, behavioural, social, policy, time and technological perspectives. Many of the contributions are from the “Transport & Climate Change” session of the RGS-IBG Conference in London, September 2010, co-chaired by the two Editors, Dr Tim Ryley and Dr Lee Chapman.

Cycling and SustainabilityTransport and Sustainability Volume 1

EditorJohn Parkin, London South Bank University, UK

SynopsisThe book explores the reasons for difficulties in making cycling mainstream in many cultures, despite its claims for being one of the most sustainable forms of transport. The topic is looked at from the varying perspectives of people, the environment and the economy with multi-disciplinary contributions from the UK, Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Germany, Australia, China and the USA. Initially it examines the cultural development of cycling in countries with high use and the differences in use between different sub-groups of the population. It then explores issues of urban form, and the attributes of the network and the system for appropriately accommodating cycle users. Cross-cultural issues are once again investigated through an exposition of research in developing countries and the environment in which scheme promoters and users operate. The book draws to a close with an exploration of state-of-the-art thinking on demand model.
