From the PrincipalNAPLANThe National Assessment Plan for Literacy and Numeracy tests have been conducted this week. To help our students achieve their personal best we have organised testing slightly differently this year, holding the tests in B Block and S Block under exam conditions.

Staff have reported that our students have all tried their best in all the tests. As a School, we should receive the results by the end of August when we will begin to analyse students learning and in particular student learning growth. The actual learning growth of each students’ learning give us clear indication to how a student has engaged with their learning as well as how effective our programs and classes are.

NAPLAN is directly linked to the VCE results and senior pathways for our students, and this year the Year 9 Naplan results will be used together with student class results in Course Counselling for students who request to accelerate a VCE subject.

Cyber SafetyLast week, supported by the Victorian Police, we ran Cyber Safety information sessions for all our students in Years 7, 8 and 9. With the growing use of digital technologies and social media platforms, it is vitally important all our students understand their safety and the responsible use of the digital world.

Mobile PhonesI would like to remind all our families and students that the use of mobile phones and Smart phones in class is not permitted.

These devices distract students from their engagement in the learning activity and reduce opportunities for students to achieve their personal best.

If phones are seen in class, they will be confiscated and depending on the situation and number of incidents, will be returned at the end of the lesson or at the end of the day. All phones confiscated in class will be recorded on Compass.

Can I remind parents and families that if they need to contact their child during the day to please call the College main office.

Assistant Principal’s ReportPhotosAll photos have been approved for printing. This always seems to take a long time and we will be exploring options to speed up the process in 2020. Parents should be receiving their orders soon.

Recognition of Excellence in Staff at ESCRecognition of staff and the work they complete is always difficult. As a small way to thank our staff we have cards and messages that, in a small way, acknowledge their efforts within our College. I would welcome any parent who wishes to publically thank one of the staff to send me a message to be read out at our regular thank you morning tea. In this way we can continue to build our entire College community as one that encourages and recognizes the many outstanding achievements we strive for. These can be sent directly to me at [email protected]

TISOn Thursday this week, all our Year 12 students had the opportunity to attend the Tertiary Information Service day held at Federation University.

Days such as these give our Year 12 students the opportunity to review their options after school by discussing their future pathways with representatives from a number of TAFEs and Universities.

Earn and LearnEarn and Learn is back and we are encouraging parents who do shop at Woolworths to collect the stickers and bring them into school. All stickers can be posted in the box at the front office or they can be handed into the front office.

Every year, the school uses the credits gained through this program to purchase teaching and learning resources for our classes.

Facebook PageA reminder to our families that our College official Facebook page is now online for all our families and community. This is managed by College staff, and we use it as an additional opportunity to share with our community upcoming events, or any specific items we would like to celebrate.

Please lookout for items on our FB page. https://www.facebook.com/Emerald-Secondary-College-107941602572331/

Buildings Grounds and OHSQuotes are currently being obtained to look at improving heating and cooling throughout the school. The old boiler systems are still operational; however, they are getting older and we may be able to improve our conditions through newer systems. Litter is once again causing issues around the school. Can you please talk to your children regarding the use of the bins and how to reduce the litter around the college grounds?Jonathon Rogers - Assistant Principal

NAPLANYear 7 and 9 students have been undertaking their online NAPLAN tests from Tuesday 14th May. Apart from a few technical issues the tests have progressed smoothly. Our students have been very patient as they wait to log on to the NAPLAN tests and the behaviour of the students in the testing room has been excellent. The testing will continue next week, including catch up tests for students who have missed tests due to absences.

Year 10 and 11 ExamsYear 10 and 11 exams start on Thursday 6th June. Students will soon receive study guides posted as an amber chronicle to help with their revision and preparation for their end of Semester exams. The study guides will provide information on the knowledge and skills covered in each class and specifically what to focus on as they revise and focus on exam preparation.

Transitioning from Junior to Senior School - Study and Revision SkillsAs a College, we have often received feedback from students, both junior and senior, that they would like to improve their knowledge of study and revision skills. It can often be a big leap from the Junior School to Senior School for students in terms of both class content and the ability to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in assessment tasks, including end of Semester exams in Year 10 and 11 and VCE exams in Year 12.

This year, in a bid to address and better prepare our junior students for the transition from Junior School into Senior School, we will be implementing end of Semester exams from Year 7-9. The purpose of the Junior School exams is to allow the students to practice revision and study skills, helping our students prepare for the more formal assessment types that form such an important part of a student’s senior schooling.

The Junior School end of Semester exams will occur in class time, under the supervision of the students’ regular teacher for the following subjects:

• Year 7: English, Mathematics.• Year 8: English, Mathematics.• Year 9: English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities.

We believe that the addition of exams at the junior level will help in the transition and better prepare students for their senior schooling. Increase student’s study and revision skills, which can be transferrable across subjects. Reduce the angst of exams, due to greater practice and familiarity, and also provide students with the opportunity to build resilience and the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of knowledge and skills learnt throughout the semester.Janine McMahon - Acting Assistant Principal

Top Arts Visit to NGVOn Wednesday 8th May Year 11 and 12 Studio Arts students visited Melbourne to see the Top Arts exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Students had the opportunity to learn about how to apply for Top Arts and about the works featured in the 2019 exhibition. One highlight was getting the chance to look through 2018 student’s visual diaries and seeing how their works developed. Students were also able to look through the gallery at a variety of fantastic exhibitions in the afternoon.Cindy Mikieciuk - Arts Domain Leader
