Through this opportunity, one of our students was encouraged to apply for one of only 30 places across the whole of Australia to participate in the NASA science program in the USA. It is with great pride to share with our community that Nikki, one of our Year 10 students was selected and will be heading off to the NASA space camp in the USA during the next holidays. The SRC and College are actively supporting Nikki and will be organising a number of fund raising activities at school to support the costs of the program. NASA comes to Emerald With the support of Mt Burnett Observatory, our Telescopes in Schools program through Melbourne University and the Royal Science Society of Victoria, we have two NASA scientists coming to ESC on Tuesday 14th August. Emerald SC is the only Victorian school being visited by NASA scientists and we are all thrilled and excited to hear what they have to say and to work with them. There will be three sessions throughout the day, one for our Primary partner schools and I can report we have a full house already booked in, one for our ESC students that Mr Gibbs is organising and at 7pm a public session for all our friends and families. The public session will be in EPAC and I encourage you all to come along to this exciting event. If you have any questions about our NASA evening please contact Mr Gibbs at the school. Car Park This week we received notification from Cardinia Council that complaints have been sent regarding families staying stationary in the drive through lane of our car park. This is causing delays on the Belgrave-Gembrook road and preventing buses from accessing the bus lane. If the wait lane is full, please do not wait in the drive through lane. If this continues, Cardinia Council will send traffic wardens to issue tickets to those blocking the drive through lane.

From the Principal:Accessing ExcellenceTo support all our student’s goal setting, aspirations and future pathways, students have begun to plan their course selections. I would like to thank Mr Smith and Miss Alder for leading this program.

Using their student learning assessment data from Semester One, students have been mapping their senior pathway and course.

Whilst we understand our students have many interests and ambitions, it is vital to each and every student’s success that they select a pathway and course that they can achieve their best in.

Course selection for our students from Year 9 through to Year 11 began this week, and it has been a pleasure to see and hear the conversations about learning and future options taking place.

Emerald Going GlobalMany of our students had a wonderful time experiencing work during their Year 10 work placement program at the end of last term. One of our students was lucky enough to gain a placement in Tasmania at the Radio satellite station.

NASA comes to EmeraldWith the support of Mt Burnett Observatory, our Telescopes in Schools program through Melbourne University and the Royal Science Society of Victoria, we have two NASA scientists coming to ESC on Tuesday 14th August.

National ChampionshipsThis week I have the greatest honour of accompanying our ESC Aerobics squad to the Australian National Championships. Competing against both State and private schools our squad has qualified to represent both the College and State at the 2018 event held in Brisbane. I would like to thank all the families for supporting their athletes through the many early morning training sessions, weekend training and fundraising to help them all get to this competition. Good luck to all the girls and go ESC!

UniformFamilies have been asking the office the timeline for the whole College implementation of our uniform. As reported to our community previously, and following department guidelines there will be a three year phase in which means our current students and families do not have to purchase the new uniform until 2020. All students in all year levels will be required to wear the new uniform from January 2020. In 2020 only Year 12’s will still have the option to have a senior jacket and jumper.

In 2018 only our Year 7’s are required to wear the new uniform, all old uniform items will be classed as non-uniform/out of uniform.

Please note that girls leggings are not College uniform.

For our families with students in Year 8 and older, we do still have some of the old uniform items for sale from the College until 2019, these are all priced at $10.00

Assistant Principals ReportUniformIn the last newsletter I mentioned the fantastic support we have had from the majority of students regarding our uniform policy. It is great to walk around the College grounds and see the improvements in how our uniform is being worn. If there is an ongoing issue regarding uniform, please contact the relevant co-ordinator to discuss how we can manage this. Traffic ManagementMany parents will have seen me with a representative from the Cardinia Council reviewing our traffic management. May I remind parents only to stop in the pick-up area of the car park in front of EPAC. Stopping in other areas causes the road to block up which results in the buses not being able to enter the car park leading to further blocking up the road. The worst time for this seems to be from 3.00pm until approximately 3.20pm. If you are able to arrive slightly after this time it may help to ease the congestion. Please use the car parks provided or drive past EPAC and re-join the pick-up queue. I appreciate that it can become a log jam at times and appreciate your patience during our main pick up times.

ICTHopefully in the next newsletter I will be able to provide you some information regarding how laptops will be managed from 2019 and beyond. Technology is a necessary tool in schools as we prepare our students for the ever changing world in which we live.

Buildings Grounds and OHSStudents are now back in the Science rooms. Whilst there is still some work to be completed internally and externally, it is great to see how the students are respecting the updated spaces. There has also been work completed to remove some trip hazards around the entry points to A Block classrooms. As with every upgrade or scheduled maintenance our priority lies with maintaining a safe learning environment for our students and staff.

Girls Volleyball - Victorian Schools CupOn the weekend of the 27th – 29th of July, the Emerald Volleyball Team competed at the Victorian Schools Cup. Despite the early mornings, long days and late nights, the Year 8 girls showed their skills and determination to win 3 out of 5 games. This was fantastic reward from the effort of training two mornings a week all year and it’s great to see so much fun being had on the court!

Awesome job girls!Tom Watson - Sports Coordinator

AFL Pathway Program

The year 7’s involved in the College AFL program spent a fantastic day at the Hawthorn Football Club on Tuesday the 7th of August. Sessions on the day were diverse, and kept students engaged and excited. Topics gave students practical knowledge, such as how to focus on mental health by understanding and expressing emotional intelligence, the characteristics that make good leaders, exploring the positives and negatives of social media and the importance of good nutrition and hydration for athletes. The group were also thrilled to tour the state of the art facility, and engage in some new goal kicking, experiencing what it would be like to live the life of an AFL player for the day. Hills Physiotherapy are pleased to welcome Ben Jones to Emerald Secondary CollegeMy name’s Ben Jones and I'm a Physiotherapist with Hills Physiotherapy. As I work out of Emerald Secondary College on Tuesday afternoons I thought I best introduce myself and provide a small spiel on me, myself and I.

I graduated from Upwey High (the dark side) in 2011 before doing my Bachelor of Exercise Science and Human Movement at Victoria University. Within the degree I undertook an internship with Rowville Sports Academy which provided me with a foundation into strength and conditioning and athletic development in young athletes (largely AFL, netball and soccer players). From here I made it into the Doctor of Physiotherapy at Melbourne University and battled through a further 3 years to finally graduate and get stuck into some real work. Luckily, after six years of study I absolutely love my job and feel very privileged to be working with Hills Physiotherapy as they really are leading the field in the provision of Allied Health services.

I chose Physiotherapy due to an extensive sporting history and I always wanted a career in which I could directly help people so, lo and behold, Physiotherapy was the perfect gig. Aside from work, I'm still battling away on the tennis court at somewhat of a high level and enjoy getting out on the track or in the shed with my old man and tinkering with a bunch of old Italian motorbikes we own.

So that's me. If there's anything I can help with, whether it's the "niggly" back or the kids want to take their sport to the next level (yes, you're never too young to begin basic strengthening for performance and injury prevention!), you can find me at Emerald Secondary College in the Inclusion Centre on Tuesdays from 1:30-6:00pm, or up at the clinic opposite Woolworths on most other days. Appointments are made through the clinic on 5968 3030.
