Immediate Risk to Life

• Apartment building on fire

• Serious accident

• Someone breaks into your house & you’re home

• A wildfire starts on the hill behind your house

• Someone comes into a store with a gun and demands money

Don’t Call 911No Immediate Risk to Life

• There’s an earthquake

• Apartment building floods

• Apartment destroyed by fire

• You come home and your TV and computer are gone

• You get a flat tire while driving on the highway

• Chevron notifies you: dangerous chemicals in the air

If you’re indoors…• DROP to the ground and DUCK.

• Take COVER by getting under a table or other piece of furniture

• HOLD on to something until the shaking stops

• Stay away from windows, outside walls, and anything that could fall (bookcase, lamp)

• Stay inside until the shaking stops

• Stay calm.

If you’re outdoors…

• Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires

• Stay in the open

If you’re in a car…

• Stop as quickly as you can – safely!

• Stay in the vehicle.

• Don’t stop under buildings, trees or overpasses.

• Do not light a match

• Cover your mouth with a cloth or piece of clothing

• Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you

• Use a whistle, if you have one

– Apply for assistance with medical costs

• Prepare to evacuate:

– Wear protective clothing, sturdy shoes, and a handkerchief to protect your face

– Take your Disaster Supply Kit (water, change of clothing, food, first aid, important documents).

• Follow instructions from emergency workers.

• Call family members when you are safe.

• Prepare to evacuate:– Move important items to an upper floor

– Disconnect electrical appliances

– Take important documents

– Don’t walk through moving water

– Don’t drive in flooded areas.

• Move to higher ground – don’t wait for instructions to move!

• Go to a small, interior room with no or few windows.

• Close and lock all windows and exterior doors.

• Turn off all fans, heating, and air conditioning.

• Bring your Disaster Supply Kit into the room.

• Bring a radio into the room. Listen for instructions.

• Bring your pets.

• Use duct tape and plastic sheets to seal cracks around door and cover the vents.
