FCC, and wireless providers
will enable alerting authorities
to send a text “like” emergency
alert message on cell phones.

Just The Facts
Wireless providers will need to agree to send the emergency
alerts in your geographical area.
Ask your cell phone provider if they will be participating in
CMAS/WEA. If they are not participating, you have the right
to end your contract with them and seek a new provider.

Just The Facts
You will need a cell phone that has the technology to receive the
emergency alert.
Ask these companies AT&T, Boost Mobile, Cricket, MetroPCS,
Sprint, U.S. Cellular, Verizon, and Virgin Mobile which devices will
receive the emergency alert.

You do not have to opt-in, download, or request anything to receive
the alerts.
The emergency alerts are free.
The alerts look like a text message but, unlike a text messaging
system, you will not be able to text anyone back to ask questions.

There are several great features about the emergency
alerts:
Audible beep will be different from other beeps heard on a
phone.
The phone will vibrate when the alert message comes
through.
Some phone features will provide a flashing or brightening
light which informs you of an emergency alert.

Many wireless plans include free or low-cost Apps that
allows for the conversion of text message to voice
message.
Many Apps are available to help people with disabilities
and/or Limited English Proficiency.

You will only receive a CMAS/WEA alert if your cell phone is located
within a geographic area designated to receive a specific
CMAS/WEA alert.
A CMAS/WEA alert will not provide all the information that you may
need. You will need to seek more information by radio, TV,
computer, or other trusted sources.
