Farr has served as CEO of Emerson since October 2000 and was named chairman in September 2004. He is only the third chief executive of Emerson in the past 50-plus years. He assumed the title of company president in November 2005.

Under Farr’s leadership, Emerson has grown its position in global markets, increased its focus on customer-oriented services and solutions, and invested in industry-leading technologies to enhance its long-term growth and market position.

With his management team, Farr has kept the company focused on creating long-term value and maintaining Emerson’s solid financial performance relative to growth in sales, earnings, cash flow, and return on capital.

To develop its list of the best CEOs, Institutional Investor surveyed more than 900 analysts, portfolio managers and investment professionals from 425 leading institutions. Survey participants cast their votes, ranking their top choices by first, second and third; the magazine then scored each vote by weight, with first place votes counting more than second place and so on, to determine the top CEOs in 59 sectors.

“Tough times require strong leadership,” the magazine said on its website in announcing its rankings. “With the U.S. economy facing serious headwinds and possibly headed for recession, outstanding CEOs will become more important than ever to the success of their companies.”

In the magazine’s January issue, Institutional Investor credited Farr with “positioning his company to withstand more difficult times ahead,” noting that while leading the company through difficult restructuring earlier in the decade, Farr maintained important investments in technology and innovation. He was also credited with helping position Emerson for strong global growth that, in fiscal year 2007, resulted in 52 percent of the company’s sales occurring outside the U.S., compared with 40 percent when Farr took over in 2000.

India’s Nalco Plans $3 Billion Indonesian Aluminum Smelter

India’s state-controlled National Aluminum Company (Nalco) is entering into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indonesian government to set up an aluminum smelter on Sumatra Island in South Sumatra Province, Indonesia.

Nalco will conduct a feasibility study on the 500,000-ton-per-annum (TPA) aluminum project in the first half of 2008. One of the requirements to be built into the final agreement would be that the alumina feed for the smelter would be sourced from India. It is reported that a high-level team from Indonesia recently visited the Indian state of Orissa and held preliminary talks with members of the state government. Nalco owns bauxite mines producing 4.8 million TPA and alumina processing plants with a capacity of 1.575 million TPA.

The $3 billion project will be constructed in two stages with the first phase setting up production of 250,000 TPA. In the initial phase, on which work will begin in mid-2009, Nalco will invest $1.5 billion in a 250,000 TPA smelter and a 750-megawatt (MW) captive coal-fired power plant. The plant will require secure coal-feed sources of 4.5 million TPA. In the second phase of the project, aluminum output will be doubled, as will the capacity of the power plant.

Nalco is expanding its production capacity at its Indian base in Anjul, Orissa. The 345,000-TPA smelter is being upgraded to 460,000 TPA, and the existing 960-MW power plant’s generating capacity is being raised to 1,200 MW. The company has also set up a 50,000-TPA rolled-products facility to produce sheets and coil from a continuous caster with technology supplied by Fata Hunter (Italy).

Australia - CO2 CRC Pilot Plant Project

Emerson Australia & New Zealand Operation secured this prestigious CO2 CRC Pilot Plant Project for Greenhouse gas reduction in June 2007. Our scope of supply included DeltaV, DeltaV SIS, Rosemount transmitters, Micromotion flow meters and Fisher Valves etc. The FAT & delivery for PCS & SIS systems were completed in September 07, site commissioning was successfully completed in March 08, and this CO2 CRC Pilot Plant is scheduled for official opening in early April 2008.

This is First major research project underway near the Great Ocean Road of Oatway Basin in Victoria, Australia which aims to reduce Greenhouse Gas Impact for Environment by proving the technology for underground storage of CO2.

The multi-million dollar project is supported by Australia governments, international companies, the CSIRO and major universities such as Melbourne University & Monash University. The CO2 CRC Pilot Plant Project was developed with a greenhouse gas reduction technology called Geosequestration.

Drilling at CRC-1 Well Site

Decreasing greenhouse gas (especially carbon dioxide) emissions to the atmosphere is one of the key environmental issues facing Australia and the world. The fossil fuels, coal, oil and natural gas, currently supply around 85% of the world’s energy needs. The International Energy Agency predicts that fossil fuels will continue to be heavily used for many years to come.

There is an urgent need to reduce the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases that are likely to produce rapid, human-induced climate change.

We can decrease our greenhouse gas emissions through increased energy efficiency, switching to lower carbon-intensive fuels, making greater use of renewable energy and through geosequestration, the long-term geological storage of CO2.

Greenhouse Gas Reduction Technology – Explaining Geosequestration

The CO2 CRC Pilot Plant Project is an A$ 40 million project involving the production of CO2 and methane gas from a depth of about 1600m from an existing well (Buttress No 1), processing the gas to separate out CO2, compressing the gas to generate a stream of supercritical CO2, which will be transported 2-3 kms by pipeline and then injected into a nearby depleted natural gas field (Naylor) for long-term storage. Approximately 100,000 tonnes of CO2 will be injected over two years. The CO2 will be injected into the Late Cretaceous Waarre C Sandstone at a depth of about 2100 metres, within the depleted Naylor Gas Field. The Waarre Formation is overlain by a regional seal.

The Pilot Plant will start operating in early April 08 for the next 18 months of sending CO2 gas underground. Monitoring will continue for several years to understand how CO2 behaves or changes over time. The challenge is to ensure a successful trial can translate into a viable greenhouse gas solution.

SMART WIRELESSSee Your Plant In A Whole New Way

Process Systems and Solutions Marketing team had organized a Sales Training on Smart Wireless Solutions. This session was hosted by our own PlantWeb Technical Manager, Joseph Lim.

Sathi K, PSS - Marketing Director gave an introduction speech on the Smart Wireless technology, Emerson Process Management Initiatives and focus on the market.

Imagine being able to access all the information that exists in a plant. Envision the ability to monitor measurement points that were previously too costly to access. No more limits. What problems could be solved? How much can it improve a plant’s productivity?

Whether for Process Monitoring, Health, Safety & Environmental or Asset Monitoring, wireless applications abound in your facility. In our customer trials, we have come across excellent ones. But chances are more that you probably have a few new ones waiting to be discovered.

Emerson’s Smart Wireless approach in real-world customer trials delivers greater than 99% data reliability, consistently. This is primarily enabled by the self-organizing nature of the technology platform. In the event a temporary obstruction blocks a direct connection, the network automatically reroutes the signal to an adjacent device, ensuring network reliability and data integrity.

Cost Benefits:With Emerson’s Smart Wireless approach, you can save 90% or more over traditional installation. Imagine, getting 10 points of measurement for the price of one wired. Talk about seeing your plant in a whole new way.

Standards:Our Smart Wireless solutions are based on open standards – from IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi and 802.15.4 radio technologies, to WPA2 and NIST Standard FIPS-197 encryption for communication security.

We are also working closely with customers and other suppliers to achieve a wireless standard that effectively solves customer problems in process applications.

As added assurance, we offer the Wireless Implementation Guarantee…our commitment to ensure that every investment made in Emerson Smart Wireless has a path to standards compliance as those standards are defined.

The HART® Communication Foundation (HCF) announces the official release of the HART 7 Specification. The HART 7 Specification enables many new capabilities for communication

with intelligent field devices including WirelessHART™, the first open wireless communication standard specifically designed for process measurement and control applications.

Fully compliant WirelessHART products from Emerson will be available spring 2008. EMR will offer customers a migration path to the fully compliant WirelessHART standard

Security:At the wireless field network level, robust security is provided through advanced,

standards-based encryption as well as authentication, verification, key management, and anti-jamming techniques.

Easier Integration with DeltaV:Today the connection between the Model 1420 wireless gateway is via OPC or Modbus communications protocols. With the release of the version 10.3, wireless I/O from the 1420 WirelessHART device appears as native I/O in the DeltaV system ushering in a new era of wireless DCS I/O.

Emerson Process Management is collaborating with Cisco to offer open-standard solutions for wireless process and plant management applications that install easily and operate reliably in the challenging process manufacturing environment. Our speaker, Joseph Lim explained in detail about the wireless technology and the plans for the future.

Ensuring DeltaV is not technically disqualified by FDT/DTM

Process Systems and Solutions Marketing team have yet again organized a Knowledge Sharing Session (KSS). This session was hosted by our own PlantWeb expert,

Jonas Berge from Emerson on 27th December.

Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) technology is used by major manufacturers to describe the information that is accessible in digital devices. EDDL is a text-based description of the variables that are contained in the device, such as flow, pressure, drive speed, ambient temperature, high and low limits, calibration settings, and so on. The description defines each variable, and describes how to access it. The technology is used by the major process control systems and maintenance tool suppliers to support device diagnostics and calibration.

EDDL is the core technology which AMS Intelligent Device Manager is built on and therefore an essential ingredient of PlantWeb and DeltaV. Therefore, it is essential to emphasis the importance of EDDL and the benefits that it delivers.

This specific event targeted our sales team who usually face competitors attacking us on projects by getting customers to specify FDT/DTM in their control system ITB.

EDDL supporting organizations include, Foundation Fieldbus,

HART Communication Foundation, Profibus International

and OPC Foundation.

Vendors promoting FDT/DTM say that EDDL is inadequate for process automation needs and the customer therefore must specify FDT/DTM as a requirement in the system bid. Moving forward, every DeltaV salesperson needs to be well-versed in EDDL and FDT/DTM to tackle questions on device integration. The session also educated about the concerns when using an FDT/ DTM.

Contents Discussed:
