With our most recent Poppy Appeal now almost packed up and put away for another year (a handful of collections still outstanding and waiting to be banked – you know who you are… chuckle!) all is looking promising with many areas, yet again, reporting increases in their totals. It is quite simply staggering, how the general public get behind us each and every year and continue to dig deep into their purses and pockets. However, not many of those people see the work and dedication of the Cornwall Poppy Appeal fundraising team (YOU!!) working behind the scenes to deliver our highly visible campaign each year. You are a credit to this Charity and I am immensely honoured to have the privilege of working with you all. Last year saw several new Poppy Appeal Organisers across the County, all of whom handled their baptisms of ‘Poppy Appeal fire’ with no big worries or headaches. Well done to you all for remaining calm and in control when the going got tough. AND SPEAKING OF NEW RECRUITS - Camelford’s new Poppy Appeal Organiser (PAO) Julian Harman and Vaughan Williams (retiring PAO) were accompanied by supporters to lay a Poppy Wreath and hold a short service with one minute’s silence. The Last Post was also played in Remembrance to the 43rd Wessex Regiment who's monument stands on top of Bodmin Moor’s Rough Tor, a six mile round trip. It's hoped that this will become an annual event and next year will incorporate local youth groups from the area. Emily’s Parachute Jump! Last year you may remember me mentioning several times, the brave Emily Gormley. Emily wanted to pay tribute to her fiancé Matt, who sadly died in a tragic accident earlier in the year. The Legion was his favourite charity. Emily, along with her father, made the jump in October, on what was due to be hers and Matts wedding day. It was a truly topsy-turvy day of emotions with fears, tears, heartbreak and laughter for all of her friends and family who supported her on the day. After setting out to raise £2k, this brave young lady has raised almost £7,000. Huge thanks goes to everyone who sponsored her efforts. She will be eternally grateful. The Kernow Poppy Challenge!! Adventurer Peter Bray made history when he became the first man to kayak the North Atlantic alone and without sails, in an arduous 76-day journey that took him from Canada to Ireland. Peter, (15 years with SAS) is now putting together a 6 day walk/cycle/kayak challenge ‘The Kernow Triangle’ which will make its way around the coast of Cornwall and raise funds for the Poppy Appeal at the same time. We will be looking for 8 participants for this exciting event which will take place in October ’16 and end at the next P. A. Launch. Interested? Call me for info: 07768 793 847.

CORNWALL JANUARY 2016

HELLO and WELCOME to the first Poppy Appeal Newsletter of 2016.

The Last Post was

also played in Remembrance to the 43rd Wessex Regiment who's monument stands on top of Bodmin Moor’s Rough Tor, a six mile round trip.

‘Live On’ Concert

You may remember the ’Live On’ Concert that County Branch were promoting in the Autumn Newsletter. The show, which took place at The Regal Theatre, Redruth in November (Theatre donated for free), with a multitude of performers who all performed free of charge, was a huge success and made over £2,000 for the Cornwall Poppy Appeal. With more than ninety performers taking part in the show, and thirty on stage at any one time, it was a challenge but one that was well worth undertaking.

Huge thanks go to all concerned in the production and organisation of the show, especially County MSO Emma Stevenson and Redruth PAO Anna Oliver. XXX

Look Out Oz – The Cornish are Coming! Local man and recumbent trike-cyclist Andy McCreadie, (ex Army), will be embarking on the fundraising challenge of a life time in an effort to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal. ‘HOW’? I hear you shout! Well… ex Remy-mechanic Andy – who will be almost 69 by the time he starts his incredible journey - doesn’t do things by half and will be trike-ing 2,500 kilometres (1,556 miles) across Australia, some of which will be Dessert. This will be a solo challenge with no back up team en-route.

His specially modified trike will pull a trailer with all of Andy’s requirements (hopefully!) for the adventure and the journey is expected to take approx. 39 days.

Pickford’s Removals and Storage Company have agreed to ship the Trike out to Oz free of charge and we are now seeking sponsor to help fund the Challenge, which is presently being entirely self funded by Andy and his wife. If anyone can offer any help by way of sponsorship contacts then please do contact me on: 07768 793 847

Those of you with Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s stores within your Poppy patch will by now have experienced first hand the new initiative on those stores re. counting and banking all monies raised in-store by the charity. The supermarkets then send a cheque for the total amount collected to the Poppy Appeal. Monies are then soft credited back to each area code which will show against local figures. Incidentally, this is the same system that is used for Comic Relief collection. All seems to have gone well at this stage and I have only had positive reports back from local PAO’s. However, we are still cutting our teeth on this one and until all is done and dusted we won’t know if the ‘system’ needs tweaking/ improving if indeed if required at all.

In actual fact, most PAO’s have reported a positive experience using the new model with Falmouth being offered the additional facility for Sainsbury’s to count the whole of the towns ‘take’. Falmouth PAO Fiona took them up on their offer. Cash was counted and changed into notes which made Fiona’s life easier and lighter when it came to banking. Her Poppy Appeal was wrapped up in record time without the numerous runs to the Bank and all that that entails.

Monies taken in store –

SAINSBURY’S - £2 million

MORRISON’S - £1 million

Whilst this is not a definite and merely speculation on my part – I do feel that the powers that be may be looking for a similar arrangement with the other larger supermarkets Tesco and Asda stores for the next Poppy Appeal. Speculation but something that could possibly be on the cards.

Thank You Event I am hoping to hold a Poppy Thank you event for PAO’s on the 22nd April ‘16. I have a choice of 2 venues in Truro at the moment and have provisionally booked them - Truro being the most accessible for people from all parts of the County. However, I don’t want to confirm my booking until I hear how many people will be attending. Therefore, would you be kind enough to let me know if YOU WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND, by email; phone or letter before the 20th February so that I can have an idea of numbers.

County Poppy Appeal Launch A statue of a giant War Weathered Poppy was unveiled at a ceremony to launch the 2015 Appeal which ttook place outside Truro Cathedral.

The contemporary nine foot high Poppy (which stood in High Cross for the duration of the Appeal), was created by Artist,

Mark Stevens of Twisted Metal and looks every inch like it has come from the wreck of a WW1 battle ship. Mark was keen to show the iconic symbol stands proud and strong, like our Armed Forces. In his words. ‘‘She’ (the Poppy) has been around a long time and whilst there may be the odd rusty edge, her heart continues to beat strong.”

Flight Lt. Tony Bartlett – Member of the famous Battle of Britain Bomber Command unveiled the Poppy. Now aged 93, Tony, who has more than 30 missions under his belt, launched the 15/16 campaign by reciting a poem he had written especially for the event. In it he spoke of the Legions comradeship, support for those in need and the common bond which continues to hold people together.

The launch was also attended by the Military Wives Choir who entertained the crowd with some of their best known songs. TV, RADIO and National & local press ran the story.

Enterprise Inns During last year’s Poppy Appeal, Enterprise Inns launched ‘Poppy Beer’ with 10p of every pint being donated to The Royal British Legion. On the back of this success we are thrilled that Enterprise Inns will up their quantities of

Poppy Beer sold and encourage pubs to take part in fundraising for the RBL Poppy Appeal in their communications. We will be promoting a Legion pub quiz for March and asking pubs to join in with celebrations for the Queen’s 90th Birthday in June. Your CFR will provide you with a list of Enterprise Inns pubs in your area, if you are nearby any pubs please say hi to them! If you receive any donations from the pubs fundraising activities, please let your Regional Administrator and/or your CFR contact know the amount so that we can provide Enterprise Inn’s Head Office a total of money raised. Please note that these are independent pubs (Enterprise Inns are the landlords) so please do not share the list of pubs externally.

Supermarket support during the Poppy Appeal Last year’s Poppy Appeal saw both Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s support us by retaining, counting and banking all monies collected in their stores. We are currently in the process of reallocating the monies to the relevant districts. By using this new process, over £3million was banked without the need of our volunteers transporting the money from the collection site for counting and then on to the bank, thus helping the RBL to ensure better safety for our volunteers. We acknowledge that there were a number of teething problems with the initiative, and we are already working with the supermarkets to ensure that the processes and communications are more effective for this year. We will provide further updates as soon as we have agreed all of the operational processes with the supermarkets along with updating the Guide to Organisers to reflect any changes. This is a new way of working but one that will help our volunteers to run the Poppy Appeal more easily and we have has some really positive feedback from the PAOs stating that “…in spite of initial misgivings we were saved the hassle of counting over 160 tins plus the banking…”. Thank you for supporting this initiative.

Audits & Governance Following a recent external review by the RBL auditors it was recommended that there should be a change to the process for Poppy Appeal districts regarding auditing of locally held records. This change now means that the control and responsibility moves to Aylesford and we will be conducting a number of scheduled samples across all districts each year. The new audit process will be headed up by Shane Crowhurst as part of his Operations Manager role, this change will be also be reflected in the Guide to Organisers that is currently being re vamped and will be issued out to all Poppy Appeal Organisers later this year.
