Emmanuel Life & Times June and July 2017
Summer Ministry Reflections
On Sunday, May 21, we celebrated another year of our Awana ministry... Our Awana
group had over 30 children and students in weekly attendance and 15-20 weekly teachers
and helpers. Each Awana class gave a report of their activities and projects and then sang
one or more of their class songs. Awards and t-shirts were given out to the students for
their Bible work. One thing that Rowena said stayed with me: the children in our Awana program memorized
collectively over 1000 Bibles verses this year. 1000 Bible verses committed to memory. Think about this and
give praise to God. As we read, study and memorize God's Word it convicts us of sin, directs our lives, comforts
us in trials and transforms our heart. I praise God for the leadership of Jonathan and Rowena and the good
work of all our Awana volunteers.
Vacation Bible School will offered on Sunday - Thursday night, June 11-15 from 6:00
- 8:00 p.m. Begin to pray now that God will bless this important summer outreach.
I have really enjoyed the "Believe Series" by Randy Fraze that we have been using; the study
takes us through the basics of the Christian life in 31 lessons. Each study has a creative video
teaching by Randy Frazee, an illustrated Bible story, a key idea, question and memory verse. In June
and July we will be learning from Part 3 of the Believe Series. Part 3 - Who am I becoming? Topics
include: Love, Joy, Peace, Self-Control, Hope, Patience, Kindness/ Goodness, Faithfulness,
Gentleness and Humility. Believe classes are offered on Sunday mornings at 9:30
a.m., Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. and Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
Summer Evening Services will be offered in June (except for June 11/ VBS kick off) and August
at 6:30 p.m. There will be no evening services in July.
I plan to use the month of July to get away on vacation, to rest, plan and pray.
Sunday morning speakers in July will be as follows: July 2: Jonathan Delgado/ Youth Sunday,
July 9: Lori Frees: A Mission Update; July 16: Rowena Sizemore: The ABC Bienniel in Review;
July 23 and 30: Jonathan Delgado.
Financial Update: Giving through the first quarter has been strong with $156,000 given through
April. Our first quarter expenses through April were $149,000. Thank you for your generous
giving. Our Capital Debt (the money we owe for the rear entrance and elevator project of 2008) is
now down to $68,000. The Finance Team will be sending out a mid-year financial update and challenge for us to
consider paying off this remaining debt as soon as possible so we can begin to look at other church facility
projects that need attention.
Serving with you, Pastor Kurt Busiek
Music News from Pam McClain
Music Department Season Overview
As we delve into the summer months, the chancel choir will take a well-deserved
break from the loft. Our last anthem of the season, “Shine, Jesus Shine”, portrays the
spirit of this years’ choir. So many gave of their time and talent to shine the love of
Jesus through song. I thank all who made this season one of inspiration.
Highlights included…
Our fall worship/workshop/tailgate experience, our Christmas and Easter
presentations that included youth, children, trumpet and choir, the African Children’s
Choir, guest violinist, Claire Dent, the Praise Team ministry, Chris Redmond’s
return, a choir Christmas party hosted by Judy Prater, concerts by the Parkersburg
Choral Society and the PHS A Cappella Choir, monthly birthday celebrations and
the addition of new choir members.
The summer will feature special music and guest musicians. Hopefully, this could also be
a time where you answer God’s call to join our music ministry. Our members would
welcome you with open arms. Look for the choir’s return in late August.
As always, if you are have questions about the music program, please contact me at [email protected] or
at (304) 483-1620.

HEALTHY EMMANUEL NEWS
FROM EILEEN MAYER
Healthy Taste of Emmanuel Dessert Bar
For the Young Life Lunch on May 7th, we coordinated with Missions Ministry to
provide a Dessert Sampler Bar of sweets that were tasty and healthy. Thanks to you all for supporting us and to
our great Bakers: Larraine Metheny, Maria Keen, Marisa Gentry, Judy Prater and JoAnn Boggs.
Healthy Bodies/ Healthy Spirits Workshop
The Health Ministry Team - under the invaluable support of Adult Ministry – hosted a Healthy Bodies/ Healthy
Spirits (HBHS) Workshop on May 13, 2017. We had two goals for the Workshop. We had two Workshop goals:
1) Gather people from local churches and ministries to brainstorm together ways to encourage healthy behaviors
of people of faith; and 2) Learn simple techniques to cook healthy and apply them to make (and eat together) an
inexpensive, delicious meal!
Praise God, both goals were met! Almost 40 total of 36 persons from 8 local
churches and ministries attended the Workshop. Joshua Sowards from First
Baptist Kenova (and director of the state HBHS and WV Try This) shared his
extremely moving and motivating personal testimony on health. Then, he taught
us: what God’s Word teaches about caring for our bodies, what other WV
churches are doing to improve health, which resources are available to help, and
how to make a good health promotion plan. With our new colleagues, we
brainstormed plans for the future. We ended our work with a fun “Body Break”
and shoulder-rub!
Next, Jason Oesterreicher (former apprentice, The Greenbrier) took the stage with his portable
stove and gave us an excellent cooking demo on how to make Black Bean Burgers and salad with
Lime Pepper Dressing. After, volunteer “Culinary Students” joined him in our kitchen to create
these items for our shared lunch!
None of this could have happened without the support of those who served as planners, hosts,
scribes, photographer and “Culinary Students” including Judy Prater, JoAnn Boggs, Keith
Mayer, Larraine Metheny, Elissa Filozof, Karen and Steve
Cox, Jean Farrah, Jennifer Lemley, Jane Graham, Maria Keen, Sally
Beckwith, Rowena Sizemore, Peter Ianniciello and Carlene Cox. Our “take
home gifts” were heirloom tomato plants grown – and donated – by Steve
Metheny. We were also blessed by the invaluable help of Sherry Ellem and
Chris Berg from Wood County Health Department. The event was so
positive that many participants asked about the “Second Annual HBHS
Workshop”!
Upcoming –
Our health ministry efforts have garnered state level attention! We have been invited to present at the Try This
WV state conference June 2, 2017 at WV Wesleyan. We will be represented by Marisa Gentry!. Please pray
the Lord will use her mightily to inspire others to better health.
Thank you for your support!
