Food Drives the Competition in Houston
GTC’s Houston office is fighting hunger through the Houston Food Bank, a private, non‐profit organization operating from a 308,000 square‐foot facility in Houston. A network of over 500 food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies, feeds a total of 137,000 people each week and provides more than 70 million pounds of food and prepared meals annually.
The food drive is the first event of GTC’s Give Back Initiative, a program to provide support to various educational, environmental and community activities. To make the food collection a little more interesting, the employees were divided into four groups. Each group was commissioned to decorate a Houston Food Bank collection box with the results judged by Pinti Wang, GTC President and CEO.
The winner was the Hunger Busters, led by Kay Stevens, Administrative Assistant – Licensing/ Technology. First prize: breakfast with Pinti.

Mid-Autumn Festival
The 15th day of the 8th lunar month
The Mid‐Autumn Festival is celebrated throughout Asia on the fifteenth day of the eighth moon, around the time of the autumn
equinox(秋分). Many refer to it simply as the
"Fifteenth of the Eighth Moon".
This day is also considered as a harvest festival since fruits, vegetables and grain have been harvested by this time and food is abundant. Special foods for the festival include moon cakes,
taro(芋头), water caltrope (菱角), and
fruits such as pears, peaches, grapes,
pomegranates(石榴), oranges and pomelos
(柚子).
For generations, moon cakes have been made with sweet fillings of nuts, mashed red beans,
lotus‐seed paste or Chinese dates(枣子), wrapped in a pastry. Sometimes a cooked egg yolk can be
found in the middle of the rich tasting dessert. Nowadays, there are hundreds of varieties of moon cakes on sale before the arrival of the Festival.
The Mid‐Autumn Festival is a traditional festivity. People send round moon cakes to their relatives and friends as gifts in an expression of their best wishes of family reunion. During night time, they look up to the sky to enjoy the bright full moon and to enjoy the food from the harvest.

Grassfires Posing Threat throughout Texas
Drought approaches worst in history
The summer of 2011 in Texas has been the dryest since 1895 when the state began keeping rainfall records. It has also been the hottest too. These historic hot and dry conditions have dried up lakes, killed thousands of trees and caused many grassfires
The severity of the situation hit home on September 13 when a fire started at George Bush Park in west Houston, about X miles to the west of GTC’s Houston office. The photo was taken from the fifth floor of the GTC office. Fortunately, the fire was contained after several hours. In othe areas of Texas, many homes and forest acreage have been lost to the massive fires, causing thousands of citizens to evacuate.
