This publication presents summary data on selected cultural occupations and industries

from the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. The tables show the number of

'culturally' employed persons in Australia classified by the occupation of their main job

and their industry of employment. They also include cross-tabulations with variables

such as age, income and hours worked.

Comparisons with the 2006 Census are shown using the Australian and New Zealand

Standard Industrial Classification 2006 and Australian and New Zealand Standard

Classification of Occupations. The 2001 Census was coded using a different set of

industry and occupation classifications and so comparisons with that Census are not

possible.

The data in this publication are aligned, where possible, with the categories specified in

the Occupation and Industry Classifications of the Australian Culture and Leisure

Classifications (ACLC) (Second Edition) (cat. no. 4902.0) which was released in 2008.

Occupations and industries are considered as 'cultural' based on inclusion in the ACLC.

Information on terms used in the publication can be found in the Explanatory notes.

More detailed information on the classifications used in the Census is available in the

Census Dictionary, 2011 (cat. no. 2901.0).

In 2011, the Census of Population and Housing collected information on the type of paid

work people did in their main job, that is, the one in which they usually worked the most

hours.

This chapter focusses on the percentage change in employment in cultural occupations

and industries between 2006 and 2011. Details about the number of people employed in

cultural occupations and industries in 2011 should be reported from chapters 3 and 4.

The number of people employed in cultural occupations for their main job increased by

9.1% between 2006 and 2011. The number of females employed in cultural occupations

increased 12.8% between 2006 and 2011, while the number of males increased by 6.1%.

The number of people employed in cultural industries for their main job increased

between 2006 and 2011 by 3.4%. The number of females employed in cultural industries

increased by 3.9% between 2006 and 2011, while the number of males rose 3.0%. (Tables

1.1 and 1.2)

The cultural occupations which recorded a percentage increase in main job employment

greater than 40% were Web Developer, Book or Script Editor, Make Up Artist, Civil

Celebrant, Web Designer, Environmental manager, Copywriter, and Multimedia

Designer. (Table 1.1)

For cultural industries, the largest percentage increases in main job employment

occurred in the Internet Publishing and Broadcasting industry (96.1%), Creative Artists,

Musicians, Writers and Performers industry (42.9%) and the Post-Production Services and

Other Motion Picture and Video Activities industry (34.6%). (Table 1.2)

collected in the Census for all employed people aged 15 years and over. The occupation

data for 2011 are coded to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of

Occupations (ANZSCO) First Edition, Revision 1 (cat. no. 1220.0). The industry

classification, Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification

(ANZSIC) 2006 (Revision 1.0) (cat.no. 1292.0) was used to classify the responses to the

industry questions for the 2011 Census.

This chapter presents information about persons employed in a cultural occupation (as

classified by the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations

(ANZSCO) 2006 (cat. no. 1220.0) or a cultural industry (as classified by the Australian

and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) 2006 (Revision 1.0) (cat.

no. 1292.0)) for their main job.

The 2011 Census found that 3.1% (310,725 persons) of employed persons in Australia

worked in a cultural occupation. The Census also found that some 3.6% (358,162

persons) of employed people worked in a cultural industry. (Table 2.1)

The following diagram summarises ways in which people can be 'culturally' employed.

They can either work in a cultural occupation in a cultural industry; in a cultural

occupation but not in a cultural industry; or in a non-cultural occupation but in a cultural

industry. In 2011, a large proportion of the people who were employed in a cultural

occupation worked in a non-cultural industry (42.3% or 131,318 persons). A librarian

employed in a university is an example of a cultural occupation within a non-cultural

industry. (Table 2.1)

Around half of the people employed in a cultural industry worked in a non-cultural

occupation (50.6% or 181,142 persons). A cleaner employed in an art gallery is an

example of a non-cultural occupation within a cultural industry. The relationship

between the employment in cultural occupations and cultural industries is illustrated by

the diagram above. (Table 2.1)

Over a quarter (27.4%) of workers in cultural occupations received less than $600 per

week while 42.7% received a gross weekly income of $1,000 or more per week. Some

14.1% of those employed in cultural occupations received a gross weekly income of $600

to $799, and 13.7% received between $800 and $999. (Table 3.4)

I N C O M E

Some 71.3% (221,688) of persons employed in cultural occupations were born in

Australia. Another 12.9% (40,154) of those employed in cultural occupations were born

in the main English speaking countries and 14.8% (46,120) were from Non main English

speaking countries. In contrast, for all employed persons, 71.1% were born in Australia,

10.5% were born in the main English speaking countries and 17.2% were born in non

main English speaking countries. (Table 3.3)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 1.2% of all persons employed in

cultural occupations for their main job.

Relatively high numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are employed as

Park Rangers (735) and Painters (Visual Arts) (359). (Table 3.3)

The cultural occupation with the highest percentage (31.2%) of workers aged 20 to 24

years of age was Dancer or Choreographer. By contrast, 65.6% of persons employed as a

Civil Celebrant were aged 55 years and over. (Table 3.2)

Of all persons employed in cultural occupations for their main job in 2011, 53.2%

(165,223) were males, and 46.8% (145,500) were females. (Table 3.1)

There were considerably more males than females employed in the Broadcasting, Film

and Recorded Media Equipment Operators cultural occupation group. More than 90% of

all Sound Technicians, Camera Operators and Directors of Photography were male.

Females were noticeably predominant in other cultural occupations. For example,

around 95% of all Make up Artists were female. (Table 3.1)

This chapter presents information about persons employed in a cultural occupation for

their main job, as classified by the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification

of Occupations (ANZSCO) 2006 (cat. no. 1220.0). The cultural occupations included

were selected on the basis of inclusion in the Australian Culture and Leisure

Classifications (ACLC) (Second Edition) (cat. no. 4902.0).

Of all those employed in Australia in the week prior to the 2011 Census, 310,723 (3.1%)

persons had their main job in a cultural occupation. Of those employed in a cultural

occupation, the largest numbers were Graphic Designers (25,513), Ministers of Religion

(16,082) and Architects (14,971). (Table 3.1)

Some 3.1% of employed usual residents of Australia were employed in a cultural

occupation for their main job. Over 3.3% of employed usual residents of the Australian

Capital Territory, New South Wales and Victoria worked in a cultural occupation for their

main job, while the remaining states and territories each had under 2.9%. (Table 3.6)

ST A T E AN D TE R R I T O R Y

In 2011, 62.3% (193,441) of persons employed in cultural occupations were working at

least 35 hours per week, while 20.2% (62,837) reported that they worked between 16

and 34 hours, and 12.8% (39,862) between 1 and 15 hours per week in all jobs. (Table

3.5)

Over 85% of Advertising Specialists, Printing Machinists, Art Directors, Technical

Directors and Environmental Managers worked for 35 hours or more per week in 2011.

Civil Celebrants (46.9%) and Private tuition Music Teachers (50.3%), Drama Teachers

(46.2%), Art Teachers (44.0%) and Dance Teachers (43.0%) worked for between 1 and 15

hours per week in all jobs. (Table 3.5)

Approximately 33.1% of those employed in a cultural occupation worked part-time

(between 1 and 34 hours per week). By comparison, 30.5% of all employed persons

worked part-time. (Table 3.5)

HO U R S WO R K E D

A majority of Potter or Ceramic Artists (55.1%) received an income of less than $400 per

week. In contrast, a high percentage of Environmental Managers (90.7%) and Urban and

Regional Planners (83.6%) received an income of $1,000 or more per week. (Table 3.4)

Of all persons employed in cultural industries, 72.9% (260,958) were born in Australia.

Another 12.8% (45,735) were born in main English speaking countries and 13.5%

(48,354) were from non main English speaking countries. By comparison, for all

employed persons, 71.1% were born in Australia, 7.9% were born in the main English

speaking countries and 19.8% were born in non main English speaking countries. (Table

4.3)



The cultural industries with the highest percentage of workers aged 15 to 19 years of age

were Video and Other Electronic Media Rental and Hiring (41.2%) and Motion Picture

Exhibition (36.8%). Other cultural industries were more likely to employ persons aged 55

years and over, with 34.8% of persons employed in Funeral, Crematorium and Cemetery

Services and 33.9% of persons employed in Religious Services industry in this age group.

Of all persons employed in cultural industries for their main job in 2011, 181,159 (50.6%)

were males and 177,003 (49.4%) were females. By comparison, of all employed persons,

53.4% were males and 46.6% were females. (Table 4.1)

The top three cultural industries that attracted a higher proportion of males than females

were Music and Other Sound Recording Activities (81.5%), Post-Production Services and

Other Motion Picture and Video Activities (70.8%) and Nature Reserves and Conservation

Parks Operation industry (68.4%). The top three cultural industries where females were

noticeably predominant were Libraries and Archives (75.2%), Arts Education industry

(73.5%) and Newspaper and Book Retailing (64.3%). (Table 4.1)

This chapter presents information about persons employed in a cultural industry, as

classified by the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification

(ANZSIC) 2006 (Revision 1.0) (cat. no. 1292.0), for their main job. The cultural industries

were chosen by selecting those ANZSIC codes with a major concordance to the Industry

Classification of the Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications (ACLC) (Second

Edition) (cat. no. 4902.0).

The total number of persons employed in a cultural industry for their main job in the

week prior to the 2011 Census was 358,162. This was 3.6% of all employed people. The

2011 Census showed that the three largest cultural industries were the Architectural

Services industry (33,835 employed persons), the Advertising Services industry (30,456

employed persons) and the Printing industry (30,344). Other large cultural industries, in

terms of persons employed, included the Religious Services industry (27,492 employed

persons) and Newspaper and Book Retailing industry (24,406 employed persons). (Table

4.1)

OV E R V I E W


Some 3.6% of employed usual residents of Australia were employed in a cultural industry

for their main job. For state and territories, the proportion was the largest in New South

Wales where 4.3% of employed usual residents (or 136,079 persons) were employed in a

cultural industry for their main job. Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory also

employed over 3.5% in cultural industries, while Western Australia and the Northern

Territory had the lowest levels of employment in cultural industries (2.7% and 2.8%

respectively). (Table 4.6)

ST A T E AN D TE R R I T O R Y

The majority of those employed in cultural industries for their main job in 2011, (60.0%

or 214,723 persons) worked full-time in the week prior to the Census (35 hours or more

per week in all jobs). About 20.0% (71,493) reported that they worked 16 to 34 hours per

week, and 15.7% (56,104) worked between 1 and 15 hours. (Table 4.5)

Approximately 80.8% of those employed in the Internet Publishing and Broadcasting

industry worked 35 hours or more in the week prior to the 2011 Census. The majority of

persons working in the Arts Education (29.7%), Creative Artists, Musicians, Writers and

Performers (28.2%) and Motion Picture Exhibition (28.0%) industries were part-time

workers working between 16 and 34 hours in the week before the Census.

Some 15.7% of those employed in cultural industries worked between 1 and 15 hours

per week, compared with 10.8% of all employed persons. (Table 4.5)

HO U R S WO R K E D

Approximately 31.8% of workers employed in cultural industries received a gross weekly

income of less that $600 per week. Some 14.3% of those employed in cultural industries

received a gross weekly income in the $600 to $799 range, 12.8% received between $800

and $999, and 39.1% received $1,000 or more. (Table 4.4)

The majority of persons employed in the Motion Picture Exhibition industry (57.1%)

received an income of less than $400 per week. Other industries with a large percentage

of employees receiving an income of less than $400 per week were the Arts Education

industry (42.0%), Entertainment and Media Retailing industry (40.9%) and Newspaper

and Book Retailing industry (40.1%). A relatively high percentage of those employed in

the Internet Publishing and Broadcasting (42.9%) and the Free-to-Air Television

Broadcasting industry (39.5%) received an income of $1,500 or over per week. (Table

4.4)

I N C O M E

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 1.0% (3,502) of all persons

employed in cultural industries for their main job. The cultural industries employing the

highest numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were the Nature

Reserves and Conservation Parks Operation industry (638), and the Creative Artists,

Musicians, Writers and Performers industry (635). (Table 4.3)

11 In the Census, occupations were classified to the most detailed (six-digit) level of

the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO), First

Edition, Revision 1. If a Census response lacked adequate information for it to be coded

to the six-digit occupation level, it was coded to a 'not further defined' category (e.g.

Designers and illustrators nfd) with zeroes in the fifth and sixth digit positions of the

ANZSCO code.

8 Employed persons are those aged 15 years and over, who in the week prior to the

Census:

! worked for payment or profit, or as an unpaid helper in a family business;

! had a job from which they were on holidays or paid leave; or

! were on strike or temporarily stood down.

9 Persons who worked in a voluntary capacity are not classified as employed persons.

10 If a person had more than one job in the week prior to the Census, then 'main job'

refers to the job in which the person usually worked the most hours.

EM P L O Y E D PE R S O N S

4 Each stage of the Census is subject to stringent quality assurance procedures to

ensure data of the highest quality. However, in a Census there are potential sources of

error such as undercounting, respondent error and processing error.

5 Random adjustment of the data is considered to be the most satisfactory technique

for avoiding the release of confidential Census data. When the technique is applied, small

random adjustments are made which allow the maximum amount of detailed Census

data possible to be released without breaching confidentiality. These adjustments result

in small introduced random errors.

6 The column and row totals in individual tables are derived after the random

adjustment process has been applied, and consequently may include random error.

Thus, comparisons between table totals may show some minor discrepancies.

7 Care should be taken when interpreting cells with small numbers, since

randomisation, as well as possible respondent and processing errors, have a greater

impact on small cells than on larger cells. Further, some small cells have been randomly

altered to zero. Caution should be exercised in deducing that there are no people having

these particular characteristics.

DA T A L I M I T A T I O N S

1 This publication presents key characteristics of persons in Australia who worked in a

cultural occupation or industry in the week before the 2011 Census of Population and

Housing.

2 The Census counts every person who spent Census night (9 August 2011) in

Australia. This includes Australian residents in Antarctica and people in the territories of

Jervis Bay, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island. The other Australian External

Territories, Norfolk Island and minor islands such as Heard and McDonald Islands, are

outside the scope of the Australian Census.

3 Although overseas visitors in Australia on Census night were included in the Census

count, this publication excludes them in all tabulations.

21 ABS publications draw extensively on information provided freely by individuals,

businesses, governments and other organisations. Their continued cooperation is very

much appreciated; without it, the wide range of statistics published by the ABS would

not be available. Information received by the ABS is treated in strict confidence as

required by the Census and Statistics Act 1905.

20 This variable records the number of hours worked in all jobs during the week prior

to Census night, by employed people aged 15 years and over. This excludes any time off

but includes any overtime or extra time worked.

HO U R S WO R K E D

18 For the 2011 Census, each person aged 15 years and over was asked to indicate the

range within which their total personal income from all sources lies (rather than their

exact income).

19 Total personal income (weekly) indicates the total income that the person usually

receives each week prior to any deductions of tax, superannuation contributions, health

insurance, amounts salary sacrificed, or any other automatic deductions. It includes

wages, salaries, regular overtime, commissions and bonuses, interest, dividends, rents

(less expenses of operation), business and farm income (less expenses of operation),

income from superannuation, and government pensions and allowances (including

family tax benefit, parenting payment, unemployment benefits, Newstart allowance, rent

assistance, pensions, student allowances, maintenance (child support), and workers'

compensation).

15 For persons born overseas, the group main English speaking countries comprises

the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), the Republic of

Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, United States of America and South Africa. The remaining

countries in the classification (excluding Australia) comprise the 'non-English speaking

countries' for this publication.

16 The list of main English speaking countries provided here is not an attempt to

classify countries on the basis of whether or not English is the predominant or official

language of each country. It is a list of the main countries from which Australia receives,

or has received, significant numbers of overseas settlers who are likely to speak English.

The list therefore includes South Africa. Although large numbers of South Africans do

not speak English as their first language, those who migrate to Australia are likely to

speak English. The list does not include countries which are statistically insignificant in

the Australian context, although they are English speaking countries.

17 A person is defined to be of Indigenous origin if he or she identifies himself or

herself as of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin.

13 In the 2011 Census, industry was coded according to the Australian and New

Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) 2006 (Revision 1.0) (cat. no.

1292.0). A modified version of the ANZSIC classification is used for the Census which

incorporates not further defined (nfd) classes in addition to the normal defined classes.

If a response did not provide sufficient information in the Census to be coded to an

industry class, the nfd class is applied.

14 Cultural industries were selected by matching ANZSIC codes to the Industry

Classification of the ACLC. ACLC industry codes are generally much finer than the

ANZSIC codes used by the Census. In some cases, the ANZSIC codes associated with the

cultural industries in the ACLC also contain non-cultural industries.
