Dearfriends,

Becauseofyourcommitmenttobrighteningliveswithhopeandopportunity,2010wasayearofnewdirectionforChicagoLights.Wesharpenedthefocusofourmissionandtookimportantstepstowardrealizingthatvision,buoyedbythesupportofagrowingnumberofindividualdonors,foundations,corporations,andvolunteers. TheBoardofChicagoLightsrevisedourmissionstatementtomakeexplicitourfocusservingpersonswhofacethechallengesofpoverty.WealsoreaffirmedourcommitmenttotheCabrini-Greenneighborhood. Workingtowardthoseends,weexpandedourcollaborationwithGrowingPowertotransformthecommunitygardenonChicagoAvenueintotheChicagoLightsUrbanFarm,where,initsfirstsevenmonths,morethan1,000poundsofproducewereharvested,onemicroenterprisewaslaunched,andthirtyteensfromCabrinireceivedjobtrainingandemployment. In2010theElamDaviesSocialServiceCenterservedover1,500guests,a15percentincreaseover2009.OurprogramattheManierreandJennerElementarySchoolsinCabrini-GreenwasrenamedChicagoLightsAcademicSuccessinSchools(CLASS),withanewfocusonprovidingartseducationthroughouttheschoolyearforallfirst-througheighth-gradestudents. WealsodecidedtomovetheCenterforLifeandLearning,whichservesolderadultswhotypicallyarenotlowincome,fromundertheChicagoLightsumbrellatoitsoriginalhomeasamissionprogramofFourthPresbyterianChurch,effectiveJanuary2011. Allofthis,andmore,wasmadepossiblebythevitalcontributionsofgenerousgiverslikeyou,whohelpedusmarkourninthconsecutiveyearoffundraisinggrowthandanotherpeakyearinvolunteerengagement.Wearedeeplygratefulforyoursupportandinviteyoutojoinusagainthisyearinworkingtochangelivesbybreakingthebondsofpoverty.

Empowering individuals to break the bonds of poverty

“A lack of power.” ThisishowPatrickdescribeshisexperiencewithpoverty,hislossofhope,beforehetookstepstochangehislifebyparticipatingintheCommunityCollaborationProjectoftheChicagoLightsElamDaviesSocialServiceCenter(EDSSC),staffedbyDanHulaandCarrieFox.

For21years,Patrickhadahighlysuccessfulcareerworkingasacommoditiestrader,butaturnofeventscausedhimtolosehisjob,hisfinances,andhishome.

“Whenthepowergoesout,youcomplain,”saysPatrick.“Whatifyoudidn’thaveelectricity?Mylifewasingoodstanding,andovernightIlosteverything.Ilostmostofmyfriends,Ilostmysupportnetwork.ButDanandCarriedidn’tlookatmeandthink,‘Oh,you’rehomelessandhelpless.’TheygavemetheopportunitytodowhatIwantedtodowhennooneelsewould.”

Thatopportunitywastostartover.BeforehecametotheElamDaviesSocialServiceCenter,eachdayPatrickfacedtheuncertaintyofnotknowingwhenhewouldhavehisnextmeal,whomhecouldturntoforsupportandcomfort,orwhathecouldtodototurnhislifearound.Eachnighthehadtroublefindingasafeplacetosleep.

EncouragedbyEDSSCstaff,inJuly2010PatricksigneduptoparticipateintheCommunityCollaborationProject,anextendedsocialserviceandcasemanagementprogrambegunin2010throughapartnershipwithBreakingBread(aministryofLaSalleStreetChurch).Throughsupportiverelationshipsandareneweddesiretoimprovehiscircumstances,Patricktookstepstotransformhislife,startingwithattendingAAmeetingsandsecuringhousinginatransitionalcommunityshelter.

DanandCarriehavebeenwithPatrickthroughouthisjourney,encouraginghimtoachievehisgoals.“Sincehe’sbeenintheprogram,he’smadetremendousstridesinhisattitudeandmotivationtoregainingstabilityinhislife,”saysDan.

TodayPatrickistakingemploymentpreparationclasses,hasremainedsober,hasbeenattendingAAmeetings,andvolunteersattheEDSSC,helpingwithfooddeliveriesandSundayNightSupper.

ThesenseofempowermentPatrickregainedthroughhistimeintheCommunityCollaborationProjectiswhatChicagoLightsseekstoinspireinallthoseitserves.

Chicago Lights equips students to thriveacademicallybyprovidingeducational

andemotionalsupportforchildrenandyouthfromlow-incomefamilies.In2010:

•Chicago Lights Tutoring paired400first-throughtwelfth-gradersfromlow-incomehouseholdswithcaringtutor/mentorsforweeklyone-to-onetutoringsessionsfortwenty-eightweeks.Personalrelationshipsbetweenstudentsandtheirtutorsaretheheartoftheprogram,helpingstudentsimprovetheiracademicperformance,buildconfidence,andsetgoals.In2010,youngerTutoringstudentssignificantlyincreasedtheirreadingcomprehensionabovetheirpreviousgradelevel.Forty-fiveolderstudentsparticipatedinCareerDevelopmentclasses,practicingimportantjob-seekingandworkplaceskills.AllhighschoolTutoringgraduatesarepursuinghighereducation.

The 2009-2010 school year launched the Ferguson Fellows scholarshipprograminhonorofthelateFourthChurchpastorDanaFerguson.Researchshowsthatsuccessfulcompletionofninthgradeisacriticalfactorinreachinghighschool

graduation.Thustheprogramprovidesfellowshiprecipientswithfundsandeducationaltoolstoassistthemintheirninthgradestudies.OurfirstFellowwasTushawnTrimble.Infallof2010,threenewninthgradeTutoringstudentsbecameFergusonFellows:DeJahJohnson,SharidanRickmon,andTietlGonzalez.

•Chicago Lights Summer Day implementedpre-andpost-testinginreading,math,writing,andsciencetoevaluatetheacademicprogressofthe100first-througheighth-gradersduringitssix-weekacademicandartscurriculum.Ninety-twopercentofthestudentsmaintainedorimprovedupontheirreadinggoalsand82percentofstudentsmaintainedorshowedprogressontheirmathgoals.SummerDayofferedasafeplaceforchildrenandyouthfromtheNearNorth,WestTown,andHumboldtParkneighborhoodstolearnandgrowduringthesummermonths.

• Chicago Lights Academic Success in Schools (CLASS) wasrenamed(previouslyitwasLiteracyandtheArtsatNearNorthMagnetClusterSchools)andsharpeneditsfocus.CLASSnowoffers400first-througheighth-gradersatthetwoCabrini-Greenpublicelementaryschoolsten-weeksessionsofdramaanddanceclassesledbyprofessionalartists.Alongwithfosteringlearningandself-expression,artsclassespreparedstudentsforperformancesinsmallstudioproductionsandschoolassemblies,whichalsostimulatedtheirsocialandemotionalgrowthandengagementinschool.

•Chicago Lights Free Write Jail Arts and Literacy at Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative Schoolcontinuedtoprovidetheonlyone-to-oneliteracytutoringprogramavailabletomorethan400youthincarceratedintheCookCountyJuvenileTemporaryDetentionCenter,withanexpandedpoolofvolunteergraduatestudents.FreeWritehelpedstudentstransformtheiridentitybypublishingtheircreativewritinginthequarterlynewsletter,annualanthology,andonlineatwww.freewritejailarts.org.Additionally,studentsparticipatedin“LouderThanaBomb,”thelargestyouthpoetryfestivalintheworld,joiningpeersfromdiversesocioeconomicbackgroundsinacelebrationofself-expression.

Chicago Lights provides services, opportunities, and supportforindividualstogaineconomicstabilityandsecurity.In2010:

•The Chicago Lights Urban Farm,incollaborationwithGrowingPower,launchedlargefarmproductionbeds,twohoophouses,communityallotmentbeds,andachildren’sbedgarden.TheUrbanFarmprovided300residentsoftheCabrini-Greenneighborhoodaccesstofreshproduceandemployedthirtyyouthforninemonths.TheYouthCorpstendedtheexpandedfarmbeds,soldorganicproducetomembersofthecommunityatanewFarmStand,andcreatedanewcompostbusiness.

•The Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center (EDSSC) assistedmorethan1,500individualsinmeetingtheirbasicneedsforfood,clothing,andshelter.Nearlyeighthundredfoodbankappointmentswerekeptandovertenthousandbaglunchesweredistributed.Seventy-oneguestsattendedahousinginformationseminar;sevenwhohadbeenhomelessweresheltered,andfourwereabletosecuremorepermanenthousing.ThirtygueststookadvantageofcomputerclassesandtenusedCommunityVoicemailtosupporttheirlong-rangegoals.

Chicago Lights is passionate abouthelpingpeopleleadhealthierlivesthroughofferingsthatnourishaperson’swholehealth—body,mind,andspirit.In2010:

•The Chicago Lights Center for Whole Health (CWH) offeredawidevarietyofscreenings,immunizations,healthassessments,andreferralsaswellaseducationalseminars,exerciseclasses,andlecturespromotingwholehealth.Itshallmark“Women’sHealthWeek”inearlyJunefeaturedfivedynamicprogramsaboutthehealingpowerofart.InOctober,theCWHintroducedthe“Care,Comfort,andCoffee”MentalHealthSymposium,whichtaughtfortyparticipantsaboutdepression.

• FourteenSummer Day studentsreceiveddentalhealthcarethroughtheCWHinpartnershipwithMobileDentistsSmile.

• TheCenter for Life and Learning (CLL) offeredarangeofexerciseoptions ledbyprofessionalscertifiedinseniorfitness,includingAnnePringleBurnell,longtimeCLLinstructorandproducerofthe“StrongerSeniors”videoworkouts.Throughweeklyexerciseclasses,participantsenjoyedcustomizableworkoutsthatchallengedtheminasmartandsafeway.

• In2010TutoringintegratednewnutritioneducationinitsIn2itCaféprogramming,whichprovidesahotmealforstudentsandenrichmentactivities,includingmartialarts,arts,andfitnesseducationpriortotutoringsessions.TheUrban Farm alsoofferednutritioneducationforchildrenandyouth.

•Free Writestaffhelpedthispastyeartoimplementclassesindance,yoga,drama,ceramics,andmuralpaintingfortheyouthdetainedinthejuveniledetentioncenter.

•Summer Day addedoutdoorrecreationtoitsrobustcurriculumofacademicandartsclasses.

Building Community

Chicago Lights cultivates community amongpeopleofdiversebackgrounds,strengtheningrelationshipsasstrangersbecomefriends.In2010:

•The Center for Life and Learning (CLL) continuedtoserveasadynamicseniorlearningcommunity,offeringavarietyofsocial,educational,culturalandphysicalactivitiesformorethan260menandwomensixtyyearsoldandmore.TheCLLprovidedmembersmyriadopportunitiestoexplorenewinterests,strengthenfriendships,andcontinuetoshapetheirlivesandcommunities. TheCaringCirclesinitiative,inpartnershipwiththeChicago Lights Center for Whole Health,createdapeerleadershipgroup.CaringCirclespeerleadersweretrainedandempoweredtoextendcompassionatecaretoCLLparticipants.Theyalsodevelopeda“talentbank”ofvolunteersthatdrawsonthegiftsandconcernsofCLLparticipantstocareforoneanother.

•TutoringhelditsFourthAnnualTutorTrainingConferencetoassisttutor/mentorsinbuildingstrongpersonalandacademicrelationshipswiththeirstudents.Thisalsohelpsstudentsdevelopmorepositiverelationshipsinhomeandschool.

•The Urban Farm providedopportunityforresidentsofCabrini-GreenandnearbymembersofFourthPresbyterianChurchtobecomefriendsastheyworkedalongsideoneanotheronthefarmandparticipatedinsummercookouts.

•CLASS performeditstenthandfinalannual“FestivaloftheHeart,”drawingthecommunityofparentsandfriendstogethertowatchstudentssharetheirtalentthroughcreativeteamwork.
