Over the program’s proud 10-year history, one of the state’s largest em- ployers, Hydro Tasmania, given five staff the opportunity to undertake the high impact program. As Australia’s largest producer of clean renewable energy, Hydro Tas- mania is at the forefront of one of the world’s most dynamic and evolving industries. The business has powered Tas- mania for more than a century, help- ing to grow and support communities and the economy. It manages 55 major dams, 30 hydropower stations and two major wind farms and em- ploys more than 1100 people, mostly in Tasmania. Hydro Tasmania is currently working to help make Tasmania the ‘Battery of the Nation’, by innovating to increase the state’s clean energy contribution over time. Hydro Tasmania’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Davy, said the Tasmani- an Leaders Program has been im- mensely valuable to the business. “In an industry as competitive and evolving as ours, we can’t afford to stand still,” Mr Davy said. “We need brave and confident leaders who can drive innovation, problem-solve under pressure, and see both the bigger picture while hav- ing a strong eye for detail. “We want to empower our leaders, and indeed, all of our people, to de- liver on our cultural pillars of caring, innovating, collaborating and achiev- ing. “The skills and experience offered by the Tasmanian Leaders Program certainly helps. “We aim to be two things – cham- pions of clean energy, and champions for Tasmania. So we’re really happy and proud to be involved in the TLP,” he said. Hydro Tasmania’s Manager of En- vironment and Engagement, Donna Brown, graduated from last year’s program. “The Tasmanian Leaders Program experience came just at the right time for me,” Ms Brown said. “I was at a mid-career point where I was ready to step up and take on new challenges. “The program has opened my eyes to various issues and opportunities in Tasmania and galvanised my com- mitment to the state and its future.” Ms Brown said participating in the program had given her a broader and more strategic perspective on Tas- mania’s development challenges. “After being involved with the pro- gram, I am re-energised and ready to take on new challenges and am look- ing forward to offering a broader con- tribution to the state,” she said. “Hydro Tasmania has given me great support to join this program and already the organisation is reaping the benefits,” she said. Hydro Tasmania’s Major Works Manager Brad Turner said he’d rec- ommend the Tasmanian Leaders Program to friends and colleagues. “I cannot think of a more unique, yet relevant leadership development opportunity than the Tasmanian Leaders,” Mr Turner said. “Post TLP, I will go about life, both professionally and personally, with a greater self-awareness. Leading to the futureWORKING to accelerate theleadership talents of drivenTasmanians, the TasmanianLeaders Program attracts ap-plicants who are passionateabout the state and the oppor-tunities it provides.

Each year the programhosts a diverse range of appli-cants from various sectors andprofessional backgrounds in-cluding microbusinesses, non-for-profits, government andlarger corporations.

Successful applicants de-velop their leadership skills asthey identify opportunities inTasmania, hear from guestspeakers as well as gain a well-rounded picture of the state’seconomic, social cultural, andenvironmental outlook.

The part-time program,which runs for 26 days over 11months, offers a realistic timecommitment allowing attend-ance, reading, reflection andactive networking over a sus-tained period.

For business owner andself-employed graphic de-signer Megan Rozynski, theprogram has helped her realiseher potential as a leader andthe impact she can have.

“The main thing for me isthe Tasmanian focus and thediversity of participants,” MsRozynski said.

“I am really starting to lookinto myself a lot more, who Iam, what I am doing and myposition in the community.

“I have recognised that I’mthe decision maker so I need totake more ownership over de-cisions.

“As the leader of my organ-isation, I’m more aware now ofwhat impact I have and I have

realised that I have the poten-tial to make a wider impact.”

Ms Rozynski, who actuallyowns two microbusinesses,Creative Hum and Buon BuonBeauty, also said you don’thave to be the leader of a largeorganisation to be involvedwith the program.

In addition, her involve-ment has helped her learn a lotabout Tasmania and she feltfar more confident in her deci-sion making processes havingparticipated in the program.

“It’s really such a unique op-portunity to learn about ourstate, I don’t think there is any-thing else that can give youthat.”

Architect with CumulusStudio Jason Licht, applied forthe 2017 program after it wasrecommended by a colleague,and has been enjoying the ben-efits, knowledge and connec-tions gained.

“If you’re interested in Tas-mania’s long-term future anddeveloping leadership skills,then it’s something you shouldgo for,” he said.

Mr Licht said the programhas equipped him with thetools to positively influence hisorganisation and office culture.

“We get to meet some pret-ty unbelievable people andwe’re all passionate about Tas-mania,” Mr Licht said.

“I’ve been impressed withthe program’s ability to pro-vide exposure and connectionto a diverse and unique pro-fessional network which hashighlighted the amazing depthof expertise our state holds,” hesaid.

Vital to the success of theprogram, is the foundation

support received annuallysince inception from the Tas-manian Government throughthe Department of StateGrowth. According to Ministerfor State Growth MatthewGroom the Tasmanian Lead-ers Program has helped shapea generation of leaders in ourstate.

“The program has helpeddevelop leaders who have not

only gone on to improve theircommunities, but helped growthe Tasmanian economy andcreate new business opportun-ities and jobs for many moreTasmanians,” Mr Groom said.

Applications for the 2018 Tasmanian Leaders Program close October 1, with information sessions held across the state in August.
