Panther Foundations for Success

INTERNSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Panther Foundations for Success Internship Development Program was created in an effort to diversify the workforce of corporate America. It is a collaboration between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and corporate partners.

The purpose of the program is to optimize opportunities for undergraduates as well as prepare them for the transition to the workplace by developing soft skills, developing them for the business environment and relevant intern experience to complement their academic experience.

UWM’s program kicked off in fall of 2014 with the first group of 9 students from UWM Lubar School of Business and the College of Engineering and Applied Science, along with three partners, Rockwell Automation, Harley-Davidson and Direct Supply. Currently, we have two additional partners, ManpowerGroup and UMB Fund Services.

The program provides a systemic approach to recruiting diverse top talent early, supporting the development of skills necessary to be successful in the corporate environment and improving the likelihood of converting top diverse intern talent into full-time regular hires post-graduation.

In order for students to complete the program, they must maintain a GPA set by the sponsoring corporation, engage in mandatory seminars and give a final presentation.

Rebecca’s Success StorySince graduation and the PFS Program, life has been a ride! I knew I would not be returning to school in the fall after my internship and while I had some job experience, my internship with Harley-Davidson really created a concrete foundation for my career. I wasn’t doing daily random tasks, but real projects that H-D used to help guide the business. Building a solid foundation in my career with H-D was a huge stepping stone to landing my first job out of college working as a client rep for an insurance software company. It also kept me connected to Harley. I am back at H-D in a rotational program. In my program you develop as an entry level employee by rotating through various teams in their sales and marketing department owning a project every 6 months for 3 years. I recently started in May and could not be more excited with this great opportunity.

Brandon’s Success StoryUpon my graduation from the Panther Foundations for Success, I was offered a role at Direct Supply as an Operations Specialist Intern. Over the course of my 2015 summer internship I gained significant knowledge through the operations side of the business. I also was able to utilize my networking skills with executives from Direct Supply, including the president and CEO, Mr. Bob Hillis. Upon the completion of my summer internship, I was offered an extended internship position throughout the remaining course of my college career and then a full-time position upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I am very excited with my current position at Direct Supply and could not be happier! The Panther Foundation for Success truly helped me gain an advantage over the job market and molded me into a professional adult upon graduation.
