ABOUT THE

ZONTA CLUB OF ADELAIDE

The Zonta Club of Adelaide is part of Zonta International, a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Zontians in District 23 (Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia) support a range of service projects and awards at the international, district and club levels to help women in Australia and overseas. As a service club, our committee structure ensures that all members can gain a real sense of belonging, develop lasting friendships and have opportunity for networking. The club aligns itself with the Objectives of Zonta International which are:

To improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of

women at the global and local level through service and advocacy.

To work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellow-ship of members in business and the professions.

To promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

To be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, to implement service programs, and to provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their communities, their nations, and the world.

The club was sponsored by District 4 in the United States of America in 1969 and began with 26 charter members. Since its inception, the club has been committed to women’s development and has donated thousands of dollars to support a range of local and international projects. Besides contributing to internationally-nominated projects, support is given to varying and long-term local projects. Together with other Zonta clubs and involving high school students, we produce basic birthing kits aimed at providing hygienic conditions for childbirth in third world countries where tetanus is rife. Fellowship is also provided through numerous fundraising activities and in the production of breast cushions for distribution in hospitals to women recovering from breast surgery. We acknowledge local women who have made noteworthy contributions in the community. We sponsor scholarships designed to encourage young women in their studies by awarding :

Secondary school scholarships for female students studying through Years 11 and 12 at Adelaide High School

Secondary school scholarships for female students studying through Years 11 and 12 at Mitcham Girls High School

A prize for the top second year female student in Gender Studies at The University of Adelaide

A scholarship for a female Honours student majoring in a scientific or engineering field at The University of Adelaide.

The role of the Adelaide Club in the growth of Zonta International in South Australia and the Northern Territory has been vital.

Annual Report 2016 5

The 2015-2016 year has built on the achievements of the previous year by further consolidating our fundraising, our work with the Eastern Adelaide Domestic Violence Service, advocacy through the Walk In My Shoes Project and growing our membership. All this activity could not have happened with-out the untiring commitment of our club members, committees, Committee Chairs and Board. I have been constantly impressed by the number of hours that members have dedicated to service and fundraising projects. Members are continually balancing work and/or family commitments with attending commit-tees, service projects and working at and attending fund-raising functions. Our club members are certainly an inspiration to those around them and must be congratulated. In Service the club has continued to provide a weekly distribution of bread and reorganised and supported the Clothing Shed at the Eastern Adelaide Domestic Violence Service. These club members who attend this service have been friendly and caring with the residents, assisting this service in their efforts

to empower the women. Other members have been active on the garden and building extension committees and these efforts have been rewarded by considerable funds being donated for a building to hopefully commence later in 2016. The workshops on assembling Breast Cushions and Birthing Kits have continued during the year under the leadership of Ivanka, Mary and Angela and been supported by a range of members. Our Membership Committee has been busy once again with following up with new member enquiries and welcoming interested women at club dinners. This has resulted in many members joining the club and it has been invigorating for the club to be able to welcome new members into the club with a range of interest and skills. Once again members must be commended on introducing guests and potential new members at our meetings.

This year saw the consolidation of fund-raising with a strengthening of the Community Lottery sales and the introduction of the wine sales, the Westpac Community Charity month and car parking fundraiser and an increase in wonderful merchandise by the Marketeers. The professional approach to fundraising undertaken by the Finance Committee has enabled these new activities to flour-ish. However it could not have been achieved without the backing and support of our club members. The club efforts in fundraising have resulted in the club being able to continue their support in educating young women via our scholarships and being able to continue our current service projects and consider additional projects.

October was a busy month with the District 23 Conference held in Adelaide. Many of our members contributed to this event by working on committees, supporting our American guest and being a Flag Bearer at the Closing Ceremony.

The club was successful in receiving awards for our Walk in My Shoes Project and Annual Report. Weeks later the club received an additional award at the ACSO Premiers 2015 Lunch for Runner Up in the Community Education category for the “Stories of Survival” Walk In My Shoes book. I would like to thank the club members, Committee Chairs and Board for their support during the last two years. It has been a delight to work with such committed, enthusiastic and talented women and as a club we can be proud of our contribution internationally and locally to improving opportunities for women.

Service The Service Committee met with members of the DV Centre and Paradise Church to make plans and a timeline for the renovation of the Donations Shed. Large donations of goods continue to be made. A small sub-committee was formed to work to help raise funds for a building project within the Centre. This service initiative includes input from many members who work willingly and determinedly to ensure that domestic violence victims have hope in the future.

September

Walk in My Shoes The WIMS project continued as part of the Zonta Says No campaign. A book of stories from women who have walked out of domestic violence situations was published and has now been distributed to many people, including politicians. During this month, Raema Mahony, Wendy Bruce and Maxine Panegyris travelled to Mt Gambier where a book was presented to

Tony Pasin, MP.

November

District 23 Conference Many club members were involved in the preparations for the Conference. Erica Majba ran very efficient Business Sessions and gave speeches in her role as Governor. Akhter Rahman was a proud flag bearer at the closing ceremony. Speakers included Dr Marilyn Joy Waring; CNZM; Hon Dr Robin Layton AO QC; Erma Ranieri; Dr Anuardha Mundkur; Jane Kennedy and WOA Major Genevieve Rueger.

October

Birthing Kits We enjoy birthing kit assembly days both at Adelaide High School and Seymour College. Fundraising is necessary as each kit costs $3.00. The kits are dispatched to places like Nigeria where they are distrib-uted through trained staff to birth attendants in local communities. Students are very committed to this project and members report that it is a pleasure for them to work with such enthusiastic groups.

December

Marketeers This initiative continues to thrive with many clever and artistic club mem-bers participating in the design and manufacture of items for sale at market days in various locations throughout Adelaide and near surrounds.

Enthusiastic marketeers also take opportunities to sell their artefacts at club meetings, fundraising activities and make commissioned items for members and friends.

January

Amelia Earhart Scholar-ships Established in 1938 in honour of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, this fellowship is awarded annually to women pursuing PhD/doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or engineering. The Fellowship of US$10,000 is awarded to 35 Fellows around the globe each year. Our club contin-ued with its fundraising for this award by a breakfast in Botanic

Park.

February Speakers Speakers keep us aware of events outside our commitments. During our February meeting we were given an insight into domestic violence from two different but complementary perspectives: from a survivor, and from a counsellor. Rev Dr Gillies Ambler has worked with the residents of the Eastern Adelaide Domestic Violence Service since 2003. He, in turn, intro-duced Ashleigh who had found refuge and help at the DV Centre.

March IWD Lunch and Breakfast Club members attended both the IWD Breakfast and Lunch. The breakfast speaker was hosted by Senator the Hon Penny Wong with MC Sonya Feldhoff, 891 ABC Adelaide and guest speaker Fran Kelly. Several members also participated in the Hope’s Cafe celebration of IWD by reciting stories from the “Walk in My Shoes” booklet to an appreciative audience.

Annual Report 2016 13

From June 2015, inclusive, the advocacy committee decided to spend each meeting informing, reviewing, and discussing advocacy issues as outlined in the 2014-2016 advocacy goals as proposed at the 2014 Zonta Interna-tional Convention. Each member of the committee then chose a specific advocacy issue to further research and feedback to the group, with the selection of some issues to be brought to club meetings as part of our monthly advocacy report. Issues discussed encompassed

The Zonta International supported United

Nations goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

SA and Commonwealth legislation issues

which could involve joint advocacy action between local clubs and district 23

Citizenship, naturalisation and identity issues,

specifically those emanating from non-birth registration

Conference- achievements and opportunities

Female circumcision in Australia, legislation

and lobbying

Cycles of trauma in children, with long lasting

effects

Child protection issues in domestic violence

situations

South Australia’s Ageing Plan 2014-2019.

At the following dinner meeting we provided updates of some of the advocacy issues we were focusing on at our meetings: June: Margaret Peters reported on the committee’s discussion on the document Prosperity through Longevity: South Australia’s Ageing Plan. Our vision 201-201, with its gendered implications for ageing women. At the July dinner meeting we were offered an opportunity to discuss current and proposed Zonta advocacy issues, actions and achieve-ments, in small group discussions with each group providing feedback. This was in lieu of a dinner speaker. To set the scene, Millicent Hughes provided an overview of the various Human Rights frameworks within which Zonta International works.

At the August meeting Margaret Peters provided a brief verbal report to the club on the written feedback provided at the June meeting which served as a “health check” on club advocacy involvement. A written report was provided to the Board and was available to members on request.

Val Baldwin then presented our committee discussion of the issue of non-birth registrations in Australia and other countries, with lifelong negative impacts. This issue was brought to us by Millicent Hughes whose article on this was included in the Zephyr. Val sought and was granted permission to take the issue of non-birth registrations to the next combined Advocacy meeting.

The September meeting allowed the committee to report back on the planning we had undertaken based on the Dis-trict 23 Advocacy Mapping Exercise several of us had shared at the combined advocacy meeting. At committee level we had listed our current and proposed advocacy priorities which we then wished to share as a club activity at a later date. At the October dinner meeting Akhter Rahman spoke to a paper she had circulated in the Zephyr on long standing research on the neurological damage children experience through trauma and exposure to domestic violence, suggesting that this could be a key club advocacy lobbying activity. At the November dinner meeting Janice Watson provided a timely update on the Beijing 20+ campaign in relation to the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Conference. As the December meeting was our Christmas lunch, no special advocacy issues were reported on by members. Raina Nechvoglod was welcomed as the acting advocacy committee coordinator while Margaret Peters took leave for family reasons.

Millicent Hughes continued to represent our club on the NCWSA and Val Baldwin continued as our representative on Volunteering Australia. Val Baldwin and Margaret Peters attended combined advocacy meetings and members also attended various advocacy related lectures and seminars, representing the club.

This year resulted in the publication of Walk in My Shoes book, “Stories of Survival “in July 2015. The committee spent many hours editing the stories and organising artwork in the form of mandalas with inspirational messages through Carol Omar’s work with DV survivors and drawings from children. A graphic artist, Jo Bourne, volunteered her time to provide an eye catching cover and assisted with the page layout. The Mt Gambier Soroptimist gener-ously provided some funds to assist the club to print 500 books. A club discussion was held with members to explore ways that members could utilise the book to raise awareness in the community about the issue of domestic violence. Club members provided the committee with names of influential community members who could be presented with the book and at the same time engage in a conversation about how they could assist with support for more resources for women or in raising awareness in the community. Many club members engaged in presenting the book within their networks. This provided a way in which all club members could engage in advocacy. The book was presented at a forum on Domestic Violence at Hindmarsh to South Australian MP Michelle Lensink and Matt Williams and the Federal Minister for Women Senator Michaelia Cash. As this was successful the committee worked with the Mt Gambier Soroptimist and Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Alliance to meet with the Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin to present the book and a useful discussion resulted in him arranging for a forum on domestic violence with Senator Michaelia Cash as the key note speaker in

ovember. This forum engaged a wide sector of the community who agreed to work on ways to strengthen local support services.

Further presentations and discussions have occurred with Rosie Batty 2015 Australian of the Year, Premier Jay Weatherill, and MPs Gail Gago, Vicki Chapman, Katrine Hildyard, Kate Ellis, Stephanie Key, Christopher Pyne, John Gardiner, Zoe Bettison, Natalie Cook, Rachel Sanderson, Duncan McFetteridge, Gerry Kandelars and Vinent Tarzia. There have been some requests for the books to be provided for training:- a Baptist Care workshop for ministers and elders on domestic violence; a federal government training session for the Digital Challenge on

Walk in My Shoes

The support of the club in printing the book and then undertaking advocacy in their own community network has been wonderful. This has truly shown member’s conviction, commitment and courage to speak out about

violence in the community.

exploring digital ways to provide safety for women in the community; Magill, Mt Gambier and Whyalla University SA Social Work departments.

An Adelaide Radio broadcast on Zonta included a segment on Walk In My Shoes which was another means of getting the issues raised and stories were read by Erica Majba and the radio presenter. Most of the books have been either given to influential people, community members and women and the rest sold on request. As a result of the demand and the continued interest another print run will be undertaken with funds provided by Premier Jay Weatherill. The club’s nomination of the book Stories of Survival was runner up in the Community Education category at the October 2015 ACSO Awards. Our club nomination to the District 23 for the Zonta International Service Recognition Award for the Walk In My Shoes project which includes writing workshops with women, displays travel-ling SA and now WA, the printing of the book and its use as an advocacy tool was successful. It is now being put forward from District 23 to the Nice Convention in July 2016 for judging against international projects. I would like to thank the hard working committee for their work finalising the book and then distributing the book through many meetings with MPs.

Breast Cushions

We have met four times during the year to sew and pack breast cushions for patients undergoing breast surgery at St Andrews Hospital. Dymphna Sprod who organises the St Peter’s group has continued to contact and encourage up to 20 people to attend the workshops. The women are very supportive of this venture and will continue to help us and we are most appreciative of their efforts. They showed their appreciation of all the work that Ivanka does by honouring her with a Special birthday tea. Ivanka has continued to work diligently to prepare for the workshops. We are also much indebted to her for the use of her home for the club workshops where we finish and wrap the cushions. I again need to thank Eleanor Bourchier for her preparation work in sewing and turning the straps which she does in her own time at home. She will continue this work this year.

St Andrew’s Breast Cancer Luncheon was held in October at Prince Alfred College. Our display was well received with many former patients expressing their gratitude and who also gave donations. This is a positive way to promote the activities of our club. We continue to receive donations throughout the year from grateful people which has helped to keep the cost of materials down.

Birthing Kits

We held two very successful assembly days at Seymour College and at Adelaide High School in September. Adelaide High School again raised funds through selling Birthing Kit cards. We are grateful to Angela Vandellis, her staff and all the helpers who have contributed to this project. The students are very committed to this project and it is a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic group.

SERVICE We have continued to support the aims of the District 23 goals as well as the club projects. We are very grateful to club members as well as the members of the Service Committee who have supported us to achieve successful outcomes during the year.

Domestic Violence Shelter

Our club has continued to take a very active role in helping at the shelter. We are now involved in:

The building project to extend the meeting and

counselling rooms. This major undertaking is in conjunction with the centre and other groups. Lynn Oxlad is our representative and it is due to her idea and endeavours that the project will succeed.

Funds have now been raised to enable work to

be started on the building but fundraising is still required for furniture and educational resources.

The donation and linen sheds which are organ-

ised by Lynne Beaumaris. The local Influencer’s Church group raised funds, organised trades-people and have completely refurbished the shed. We even have a chandelier. We held a cutting the ribbon ceremony in November and a delightful morning tea.

Bread distribution happens every Tuesday and

is handled by a number of members.

Christmas wrapping of gifts for the children and

our contribution of gifts for the residents.

The garden committee. Maxine Panegyres and

Anne Milne are on this committee and work hard at working bees and in planning for the ongoing development of the grounds.

Interaction with a few of the residents. Bev Gum

has continued to work with a few of the women encouraging them to attend the Hope Cafe where they can get help with their language skills and where they have been given ongoing support.

Lynne Beaumaris has also supported a number

of the women by holding informal morning or afternoon teas. These have been well attended and we have been able to help some of these people in other ways.

Fundraising

The committee has again supported fund raising ventures during the year. In November we were given the opportunity to organise a sausage sizzle at Bunnings, Kent Town. Wendy and I organised the day and were very pleased with the support from club members. This is an ongoing activity which is enjoyed by club members and brings in funds from outside of the club.

In conclusion I would like to thank all of the committee members for their untiring efforts in making this a very successful year for the club.

Annual Scholarships

The University of Adelaide

Our post-graduate scholarship winner for 2015 was Victoria Ludlow. Victoria was an honours' student in the faculty of Health Science. The aim of her project was to further enhance the understanding of dental pulp stem cells by investigating the role of mTOR signalling, particularly as the cells undergo differentiation into neurons. By increasing their knowledge of this major signalling system it may be possible to control the outcome and/or the survival of implanted cells and consequentially improve the functional outcomes of stroke patients. Significant progress has been made to date and hopefully dental pulp cells will be used to help stoke patients' recovery in the very near future. Victoria was selected for this scholarship, based on her outstanding academic achieve-ments and the exceptional referee reports from her lecturers. In January this year we received a letter from the University of Adelaide to advise us that Victoria had suc-cessfully completed her Honours Degree of Bachelor Health Science Program with First Class Honours. We congratulate Victoria on her outstanding results and wish her all the very best for the future.

Gender Studies Prize

The 2015 winner of our gender studies prize was Ann Jackson who was selected as the most outstanding 2

nd year female student of

Gender Studies and Social Analysis. Beverley Newberry and Lynne Beaumaris will be attending a function at The University of Adelaide on the 27

th April to acknowledge

Ann's achievements and present her with her award.

Secondary School Scholarships

Four scholarships are awarded annually, one to a year 11 and a year 12 female student at Adelaide High School and one to a year 11 and a year 12 Aboriginal student at Mitcham Girls' High School. Usually the year 11 student is awarded the year 12 scholarship the following year to enable her to complete her schooling. Our criteria requires the students to be from disadvantaged backgrounds who are high achievers academically and also take part in school and/or local community activities and demonstrate leadership skills. The scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, help make it possible for the girls to complete year 12 and have an opportunity to undertake tertiary studies at TAFE or university. Congratulations to Poonam Rajput from Adelaide Girls' High School and Jessica Powers from Mitcham Girls' High School who both successfully completed year 11 last year and were offered our year 12 scholarships this year.

Congratulations toNatasha Merdanovic from Adelaide Girls' High School who is the year 11 scholarship winner for 2016. As there are no Aboriginal students at Mitcham Girls' High School continuing on to year 11 this year we met with the principal, Ms Antoinette Jones, and it was agreed that in future the scholarships would be open to all girls in year 11 and 12 who meet the criteria detailed above. To this end a year 11 student will be selected shortly to receive the year 11 scholarship for 2016.

SA Women's Honour Role

After the success of our Women of Achievement Awards' Night held at the Town Hall last year, we were encouraged to nominate some of our recipients for the prestigious SA Women's Honour Roll. We are thrilled to announce that both Debbie Harrop and Major Genevieve Reuger were chosen for this award to formally recognise their outstanding achievements and invaluable contribution to the Australian commu-nity. Congratulations and best wishes to Debbie and Genevieve on receiving this well-deserved honour.

National Council of Women SA

Ruth Gibson Award

Our club sponsored Megan Lock for this award, valued at $4,000, to assist her with travel and accommodation expenses in order to study Japanese language and culture, mathematics, statistics and French at the University of Tokyo. Megan was a very enthusiastic and dedicated second year student at the University of Adelaide, studying a Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Science, a Bachelor of Teaching and a Diploma in Languages (Japanese) at the same time. We wish to congratulate Megan on being a joint winner of this award and wish her all the very best for a very exciting and rewarding year in Japan. Once graduated Megan plans to teach mathematics and Japanese to disadvantaged secondary school students in South Australia.

The Amelia Earhart Breakfast

Our annual fundraiser for ZI Amelia Earhart Foundation was held on January 17

th 2016 in

the Botanic Park. Members and guests, including Adrienne Williams, the District 23 co-ordinator of the Amelia Earhart Foundation, spent a most pleasant morning chatting and relaxing with a glass of champagne and a range of tasty fruit platters, ham, cheese, bread rolls and Danish pastries. The morning concluded with many people winning raffle prizes. As a result our club was able to donate $884 to the ZI Amelia Earhart Foundation which awards scholarships to young women undertaking a career in aeronautics. Many thanks to all our club members and their guests for helping us to make this such an enjoyable and successful event. Zonta Club of Adelaide Women

New members

During the past year we introduced several new members to our club. Julie Hughes, Carolyn Millard, Kay Wood, Carol Summers, Gerry Sanderson and Sue Butler all joined during the year and all bring their unique expertise and experience to our club. This includes specialist nursing, online curriculum writing and professional learning, ownership and directorship of a wine making company, education of students in public speaking and director of a global Sustainabil-ity and Energy Efficiency company. In the last twelve months our club has benefitted in many ways from their excellent contributions and we look forward to their continuing work with the club. We also welcomed back Eleanor Bourchier and Raina Nechvoglod transferred to us from another Zonta club.

New members get together

In November last year Raema hosted a gathering for newer members. The morning tea meeting proved to be a great success. Erica Majba explained how the club fits within Zonta International and District 23. Aileen Connon talked about her experiences with the club which was both informative and entertaining. It was pointed out that it is not unusual for new members to feel overwhelmed when they first join the club and a good way for members to find out more about the

workings of the club was to move around the committees. This enabled people to gain more information and an opportunity to work with other members as well.

Farewell

It is always sad to lose members and this year we farewell Chris Campbell who has been a Zontian for 20 years. After many years of support for the club Chris is looking to spend more time with her family welcoming a new grandchild. Chris was the coordinator for UN for the first few years of my membership organising our participation in UN events. We will miss her but hope that we continue to see Chris at functions during the next few months and years. Jan Ness joined our club in 2011 and has contributed in various committees, most recently, Awards. Jan has also served on the Board since June last year. Jan has decided not to continue with e club and will be looking to do other things with her time. We wish her well and hope that she might join us for some events.

After an accident late last year, Andrea has decided to take a year off and assess how she is going at the start of next year. Andrea wants to still support the club and she will do this in other ways where she can contribute. We wish Andrea well in her quest for recovery to better health. We hope to see Lynn Oxlad, Eleanor Bourchier and Andrea Roberts over the coming months after they declined to renew their memberships.

MEMBERSHIP The membership committee monitors club numbers, meets with prospective members and arranges opportunities for them to gather information about Zonta International and club activities.

Fundraiser

Once again the membership committee hosted a Blue Illusion Fashion event at Burnside and once more it turned out be a fun event and financially successful. Our three models Lorraine Elliott, Sarah Mohammadi and Carol Summers all looked stunning in the outfits chosen by the Blue Illusion staff and they looked professional as they paraded around the store for club members, guests and the public. We thank the models for making the afternoon such a success and also our club members who invited friends and family.

Prospective members

We continue to attract requests via the club’s website for information about joining the club. These are in addition to the more regular ways that people find out about us through personal contacts. Throughout the past 12 months there have been a number of people attend our dinner meetings to find out more about Zonta. Some of these people are ready to join our club. Members of the committee meet with prospec-tive members over coffee to discuss club structures, how we operate and club projects in which prospective members may be keen to participate. This is always a great way to find out more about people who may join the club.

Thank You

Many thanks to the membership committee for our coffee meetings during the last year to discuss and plan some of our activities and new projects. It is always good to meet and hear others’ considered perspectives and approaches that are well thought through and practical, when putting together new ideas about membership issues for the club. Again we thank Club President Raema who has made herself available for committee meetings when possible and to meet prospective mem-bers.

The Zonta International United Nations Committee teams represent Zonta in New York at UN Head-quarters; in Geneva at the UN Office and ILO Headquarters; in Vienna at the UN Office; and in Paris at UNESCO. The teams ensure that Zonta’s priorities are presented, and that the Zonta voice is clear in mission-related meetings at their respective sites. They meet and work with decision-makers from UN agencies and countries where Zonta has funded projects and/or where Zonta clubs reside. The current priority area of focus is the Sustainable Development Goals, which set the UN agenda for the next 15 years, concentrating on Goal 5 and

areas that relate to women’s empowerment. The teams also monitor and report on ongoing issues such as human trafficking, women’s employment, human rights, the gender pay gap, and much more. Team members work in coalition with other like-minded organizations on issues of mutual concern, such as early and child marriage. The United Nations of Australia, South Australia, newsletter has been emailed to members and monthly reports in the Zephyr have again been avenues for circulating this information. Members attended the UNAA (SA) United Nations Day Dinner and other of their activities like the regular discussion evenings with a wide variety of interesting, inspiring and influential speakers on an incredible range of topics throughout the year. The extensive list of UN Observance Days illustrates the range of aims, priorities and annual themes of the organisation. 2016 is the International Year of Pulses. Locally our major annual involvement is, of course, UNWomen Australia’s International Women’s Day

Breakfast where we had a table of attendees, along with another table of Adelaide High School students which was again organised by committee member, Angela Vandellis. Several members also attended the International Women’s Day Lunch on International Women’s Day, 8 March and other functions during the IWD week.

The UNICEF ‘Spring Walk’ on Sunday 19 April, a guided tour of the Treasury Tunnels, was most interesting and enjoyed by members and guests.

DINNER PROGRAM FOR THE YEAR

April 2015

Club members: Kathy Ellis, Bev Gum and Margaret Peters To start off the Zonta year we enjoyed listening to three members, being treated with witty deliveries about their families and experiences. True to pre meeting promises, impeccable timing of their talks was kept.

May 2015

Annual General Meeting As this meeting is our AGM of the Zonta year ended 31 March 2015, we did not engage a speaker.

June 2015

Handover Meeting Bev Watson, from Hope’s Cafe On this evening, we heard from Bev who works at Hope’s Cafe, a joint project between Uniting Com-munities and Clayton Wesley Uniting Church at Norwood. She spoke enthusiastically and passion-ately about her role at Hope’s Cafe where she co-ordinates the kitchen as well as volunteering in many areas by helping disadvantaged youth, refugees and helps manage the Goodies Op shop.

July 2015

Understanding Advocacy Ivanka Jovanovich kindly offered her home to the club for our July meeting expressly for the purpose of raising money for breast cushions. Two previous club members attended. The Advocacy Committee took this opportunity to discuss current and proposed Zonta advocacy issues, actions and achievements. Small group discussion took place. We were delighted to also have University of Adelaide 2nd Year Gender Studies prize winner, Elise Bills and her mother Ann attend.

Gemma Sadler: Trafficking in Women Gemma gave us an enlightening and thought pro-voking talk; a sad reminder of the reality faced by some. Gemma is a project officer for Global Alliance, an organisation allied to the United Nations, which focuses on the victims who have survived human trafficking. Gemma’s role now concentrates on migrants, refugees and arranged marriages.

September 2015

Cintra Amos, Chair of the ZI District 23 Conference Our special guest this month was Zontian Cintra Amos, who spoke about the forthcoming District 23 Conference. At this meeting we had a chance to examine our club’s views on voting at the Conference for District By-Laws and board candidates.

October 2015

International Night Asylum seekers, Sarah Mohammadi and Hani Ashtari This evening’s speakers came to address club members via Hope’s Cafe where Bev Gum regularly volunteers. Sarah and Hani revealed to us the human face and reality of the asylum seeker. A report of their plight and the problems they face in a new country was highlighted in the November Zephyr.

November 2015

ZI Birthday Dinner Meeting A video presented by Erica Majba on “Delaying early Marriage in Niger”. Erica brought to our attention a report at the recent District 23 Conference where ZI has been support-ing a project in Niger, which is working to lessen the likelihood of young girls being forced into marriage. During her presentation Erica summarised the criteria applied by ZI when it considers whether to support a project (December Zephyr).

December 2015

Christmas Lunch, at the home of President Raema Mahony and Jim Mahony Many thanks to Raema and Jim Mahony for giving the club an opportunity to celebrate its President’s Choice Christmas lunch in a home with picturesque views, specially and carefully set up for our end of year breakup. This event was a great opportunity for fellowship over platters of food provided by members. The Marketeers took the chance to showcase their products with a good result.

January 2016

Amelia Earhart Breakfast A great start to the New Year was our Amelia Earhart Breakfast which was held in Botanic Park with perfect weather where members and friends enjoyed a sociable and relaxing morning.

February 2016

Reverend Dr Gillies Ambler and Ashleigh a domestic Survivor - “Grief Wounds Love Heals” We were given an insight into domestic violence from two different but complementary perspectives: a survivor and a counsellor. Dr Ambler has worked with about 800 women and children during his years at the DV Centre and Ashleigh told us about her evolution from Abused to Survivor.

March 2016

Angela Vandellis - Birthing Kits: providing a clean and safe birthing environment Angela spoke to us about birthing kits, where 17 years ago Dr Joy O’Hazy from the Zonta Club of Adelaide Hills identified basic birthing needs in developing countries and formulated the first birthing kits. Angela, a staff member of Adelaide High School, enlarged on the various aspects of the birthing kits projects and on the tremendous commitment of students from AHS.

CHANGE OF DINNER VENUE

Due to The Feathers rebuilding its dining facilities, the club has changed its dinner venue to The Lion Hotel, North Adelaide. Many members assisted in seeking compara-ble meeting/dining facilities and after much discussion the venue was changed for our February meeting.

NEWSLETTERS

Thank you to members who have contributed to our monthly newsletter. This helps make our publication an historical record of our club’s activities over the year. Again, we will miss Eleanor Bourchier for providing us with outstanding summaries of guest speakers. Wendy Bruce continues to keep us all informed of events and sites concerning women and children throughout the world. Thanks you also to the members who check their reports and provide feedback. PUBLIC RELATIONS

Our strategy is to promote knowledge and understanding within and outside our club of the objectives, goals, accomplishments, projects and events that we pursue. This requires our team to keep constant focus on opportunities at any occasion to strengthen our position in the community. Our thanks for the ongoing involvement of Raema Mahony and her team with their work on the Walk in My Shoes project.

BANNERS

We again organised a banner for education complying with standards and instructions from Zonta International. All banners are used where applicable and at every opportunity.

FACEBOOK

Wendy Bruce and Bev Gum have continued their strong performances in looking after our Facebook page. We find that this is a productive way to keep up to date with information about members and events. Area 23 has a Facebook page and we would advise all members to join in order to take advantage of this resource.

WEBSITE

Wendy Bruce and I have been managing the administration of the site. Greg Lawrynowicz of EDynam has revigorated the format of our website to make it compatible for easy access with a mobile.

We continue to receive a number of mem-bership enquiries which are then directed to the membership committee.

ZONTA INTERNATIONAL

Zonta International is a leading global organisation of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. There are over 30,000 members in more than 1,200 clubs in 67 countries and geographical areas. Zontians all over the world volunteer their time, talents and support to local and international service projects, as well as scholarship programs aimed at fulfilling Zonta’s mission and objects. Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, New York, USA, Zonta takes its name from the Lakota Sioux Indian word meaning “honest and trustworthy”. Zonta International, its districts and its clubs are nonsectarian and nonpartisan. Individual Zonta clubs extend membership invitations to local leaders in business and the professions. Zonta supports women’s education and leadership through several programs. The Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards support graduate study by women in aerospace-related sciences and engineering. Since 1938, over US $4 million has been raised to support more than 800 scholarships.
