topcontrol modular TCM for lossles storage of the expansion volume and for pressure

maintenance in closed heating, climate and cooling systems. Designed and manufactured acc.

to regulations of EN 12828 and SWKI 93-1.

The topcontrol device is a nicely shaped, self-contained unit with a pleasing design. It is

designed for a modular combination with external expansion vessels (max. 0.5 bar). The

connections for suction pipe and overflow pipe are situated at the back of the device.

The control unit is built very compact with one resp. two low noise pressure maintenance pump(s)

(model Solo 1x100%, model Duo 2x50%, model Maxi 2x100%) which is/are executed as

multistage centrifugal pump(s) with efficiency motor with integrated electronic frequency

converter and high quality floating-ring type shaft seal. Also the multicontrol hydraulics includes

one resp. two electronic controlled electric overflow valve(s) (models Solo, Duo and Maxi 1x100%

of the expansion flow, models Duo-twin and Maxi-twin 2x100%) as continuous opening control

valve(s) (opening 0..100%) incl. electric motor with safety function (closed when currentless).

Pressure maintenance pump(s) and electric overflow valve(s) are controlled continuously and

pressure-proportional.

High-precision measuring of the plant pressure. Hydraulic connections and necessary shutoff

devices for on-site piping are factory provided on the left side of the control unit (possibility for

rebuilding to the right side of the control unit). Temperature monitoring of the media streaming

into the vessel.

Prepared connection point for mounting a makeup module for litre accurate measuring.

Combinable with water softening for standardized makeup water.

Prepared connection point for mounting a degassing module for automatic and economic low

pressure degassing, based on the principle of pressure drop. The connection and the necessary

shutoff device for the degassing pipe is situated at the back of the control unit.

All operations are controlled by the microprocessor electronics. The operator panel is situated

ergonomically and containes a illuminated 4-line text display. The handling is thought-out and a

lot of languages are supported. The measure- and control unit is executed in a closed electrical

cabinet. Four potential-free signalling contacts (fault, warning, makeup in operation, device

operation enabled) are provided.

Input ”external enable contact device operation” and external setpoint 4-20 mA: ”upper

working pressure”. Also two analog standard signals (4-20 mA) for remote monitoring or

connection to a superordinate control system with the following standard assignment:

- analog output 1: ”vessel level (0-100%)”

- analog output 2: ”current plant pressure (0-40 bar)”

For more signals two additional expansion modules can be installed easily in prepared mounting

positions. Remote monitoring can be done also via multicontrol SMS module or multicontrol bus

module. External temperature monitoring via an optional temperature sensor at the connection

point is prepared too.

max. operation temperature of the plant: 110 °C (with EV cooling vessel)

max. temperature at the connection point: 70 °C

2. Mounting

2.1. Installing the device

The topcontrol device must be installed on a horizontal and solid floor and it must be set up

vertically by using the adjustment stands (1). The four holes on side of the socket can be used to

transport the device (for example by inserting 2 pipes, 1 .max. ")

figure adjustment stands and transportation example1:

2. Mounting

The implementation into the system return must be executed acc. to the hydraulic diagrams in

chapter 3 - ”Hydraulic diagrams”.

topcontrol modular TCM series devices can be used in plants with max. temperature of 70 °C

at the connection point. If the max. temperature at the connection point exceeds 70 °C, EV

cooling vessels must be installed!

The implementation into the system return must be done at a position where no external

pressure can occur. External pressure could affect the trouble-free operation of the pressure

maintenance device.

General information for device enabling:If the device operation is disabled, the topcontrol electronics recognises the external

deactivation and all components (pumps, valves) will be switched off. The measurement of

pressure, level, temperature and the output of all messages remain operative. In this mode all

messages (e.g. analog signalling, binary signalling,...) and the signalling contacts ”fault” and

”warning” remain operative.

The disabled device operation can be recognised via the green LED at key ”1” (flashing every

second). So it can be seen that the device is switched on via the key ”1” but disabled via the

external device enabling.

6. External setpoint

Topcontrol series devices with software version V1.17 and higher allow to set the upper working

pressure depending on an external setpoint signal (from software version V1.17 with analog

signal 4-20 mA, from software version V1.21 also via bus module).

This could be necessary if the working pressure must be changed depending on the operating

mode of the plant (e.g. winter/summer mode).

The external setpoint from bus module has priority over the analog external setpoint setting.

Independent from the setting of the analog external setpoint (device set-up ext. setpoint) the

setpoint value from bus is used for the upper working pressure.

6.1 Pressure setting via external setpoint signal analog signal(0-40 bar) ( 4-20 mA):

The external setpoint signal always equates to a pressure of Nevertheless the4-20 mA 0-40 bar.

usable upper working pressure is always limited depending on the type of the topcontrol device.

You can use the following diagram for an approximate conversion from the desired upper

working pressure to the necessary external setpoint signal.

step 9 Set the working pressure

- Open the shutoff devices from/to system return (expansion pipe, makeup).

If a MAE degassing module is installed, the ball valve at ist intake side must be

closed.

Due to the size of the system the setting of the working pressure can take up a lot

of time because the pressure has to extend into the entire connected system to

be stable for the setting.

- Go to user level 3

- Select “settings” “pressure maintenance” “working pressure”

- The display shows the current settings (complies with the last set working

pressure, e.g. default value ex factory).

CAUTION: Independent from the displayed values the working pressuremust be set again in the course of commissioning!

- Press “F1” (change) to set the desired upper working pressure and confirm it by

pressing ”F1” again.

- Enter the hysteresis (default value: 0, bar)8

Difference between the set upper working pressure and the start-up pressure of

the pump (=lower working pressure)

- “ “ ( : 0,3 bar)Enter the hysteresis Difference pump setpoint default value

figure : setting of the upper working pressure6

step 10 If a makeup module is installed, the operating mode must be selected.

The operating mode depends on several criteria such as size of the system, age of

upper working pressure(default setting: 2,38 bar)

hysteresis (default value: 0,8 bar)lower workingpressure

INFORMATION!

If device set-up was completed successfully (only mandatory inputs necessary) this menu itemis removed permanently. The device set-up is always available in “user level 3” “settings”.

i

NOTE!

To apply the working pressure, all three settings must be entered and confirmed!

the system, possible known leakage and so on.

If there are known and regular leakages (e.g. a known makeup amount within a

known period) we recommend to use the operating mode “time-controlled”.

For a description of the different operating modes see instruction manual

multicontrol MCK, MCM-_1, chapter 5.7 - “user level 3”.

step 11 Press key “I” in main display to enable the function of the device and confirm it with

”F1” (Yes) (the green control lamp beside key „I” must glow!

step 12 If a degassing module is installed, the operation mode ”degassing module must“

be selected. If the selection happend incorrectly, degassing can‘t work correctly!

Adjustment of the degassing module:

- Shut off the regulating valve and the ball valve at the degassing module.

- Go to manual mode see instruction manual chapter 5.7 -( multicontrol,

“user level 3”) and switch on the output ”degassing valve” (”output: on”)

- Wait until the motor valve opened completely (ca. 35 sec.; the scale resp. the red

axis at the electric actuator must not rotate anymore)

- Open the ball valve at the intake side

- ( 1/4 ).Open the regulating valve slowly until you hear a flow ca. turn The plant

pressure decreases, the pressure maintenance pump starts.

- Look for the plant pressure shown at the display.

- The regulating valve is set correctly if pump 1 is able to increase the plant

pressure and stops. If the pump can‘t increase the plant pressure resp. the

second pump (systems Duo, Maxi) starts, the regulating valve is set incorrectly

(opened too much)

- After this, the output ”degassing valve” must be set to ”Auto” again.

- (1)The setting of the regulating valve must be notated

at the plant- resp. commissioning record.

MAE: _________Setting regulating valve (1)

step 13 The device is now ready for operation.

All shut off devices from/to system return must be secured against unintended

closing (e.g. by dismantling the handle,...)

Further settings (e.g. softening MWE, operating modes etc.) must be done in

menu “settings” see instruction manual( MCK, MCM-_1)

8. Warnings and fault messages

Additional warnings and fault messages at topcontrol TCM series devices:

Adjustment of the electric overflow valve(s) (if necessary):

The regulating valve(s) at the intake side of the electric overflow valve(s) is/are fully opened by

factory default.

Because of the set working pressure, the size of the system etc. it could be necessary to regulate

the overflow valve(s).

A hint for a necessary adjustment would be:

The pressure maintenance pump starts directly after opening the overflow valve. In this case the

plant pressure decreases to the lower working pressure after opening the overflow valve and the

pressure maintenance pump starts the pressure build-up.

The setting of the calibration valve(s) must be notated at the plant-

resp. commissioning record.

11. Maintenance

11.1. Cleaning of the motor

Keep the motor cooling fins and fan blades clean to ensure sufficient cooling of the motor and

electronics.

11.2 Relubrication of motor bearings

Pumps with 0,37 - 7,5 kW:

The motor bearings are of the closed type and greased for life. The bearings cannot be

lubricated.

Pumps with 11 - 22 kW:

The motor bearings are of the open type and must be lubricated regularly.

The motor bearings are lubricated on delivery. The built-in bearing monitoring function will give

a warning indication on the R100 resp. Grundfos GO when the motor bearings are due to be

lubricated.

The recommended grease type is a polycarbamide-based lubricating grease.

Quantity of grease:

motor type MGE 160 13 ml

motor type MGE 180 15 ml

When relubricating the first time, use the double quantity of grease as the lubrication channel is

still empty.

11. Maintenance

ECON

NOTE!

Before relubrication, remove the bottom plug in the motor flange and the plug in thebearing cover to ensure that old and excess grease can escape.

12. Appendix

Hydraulic connection between TCM and EG(Z)-M

topcontrol modular TCM series devices don‘t have a built-on vessel. The expansion volume must

be stored in external EG series expansion vessels. To enlarge the expansion volume, EGZ-M

series additional expansion vessels must be installed.

Generally a connection of the particular devices must be installed on-site according to the

appropriate piping diagram in chapter 3.

1 Pay attention to the right connection of the particular devices.

EG(Z)-M expansion vessels use built-in components (at the lower vessel flange) for a correct

degassing.

Therefore it is necessary to connect the overflow pipe of the TCM device with the overflow pipe

of the EG-M expansion vessel and the suction pipe of the TCM with the suction pipe of the EG-M!

12. Appendix

ECON

NOTE!

To ensure a correct function of the pressure maintenance unit you have to consider thefollowing instructions for the connection between TCM and EG(Z)-M!

i

NOTE!

Bends, crossover fittings etc. which are necessary for crossing may only be installed at theoverflow pipe.

2. Installation of the suction pipe

Sometimes it is necessary to cross the overflow pipe and

the suction pipe to connect TCM and EG(Z)-M correctly.

Please note that the suction pipe is installed without any

differences in level. Try to avoid these differences as much

as possible.

If these differences between TCM and EG(Z)-M can not be

avoided, the suction pipe must be installed rising from

TCM to EG(Z)-M.
