Important concepts for Chassis Switch
1. Backplane Bandwidth: ₪ The total bandwidth capacity between services interface card and switching fabric

2. Switching capacity: ₪ For modular switch, it means switching capacity for switching fabric (cross bar)

☼720Gbps/1.44Tbps for S85123. Throughput: ₪ considering 64 bytes packet, the total number of packets a GE port can forward per second.

How to calculate the key switching index of S8500?About Backplane Bandwidth:
6 pairs of SERDES(*) between one I/O and one engine. One
SERDES bandwidth is 3.125Gbps. We have two engines (in
load-sharing mode) and double bandwidth of SERDES is saved
for upgrading capacity. So, the backplane bandwidth of one I/O
is 6×2 × 2 ×3.125Gbps×2 = 150Gbps. So, S8512 backplane
bandwidth is 150Gbps×12 = 1.8Tbps, S8508 backplane
bandwidth is 150Gbps × 8 = 1.2Tbps, S8505 backplane
bandwidth is 150Gbps × 5 = 750Gbps.
About Switching Capacity:
6 pairs of SERDES between one I/O and one engine. One
SERDES bandwidth is 3.125Gbps. 8B/10B coding is used for
hardware coding. So, the switching capacity of one I/O is 6×2
×2 ×3.125Gbps×0.8 = 60Gbps(under full duplex mode). So,
S8512 switching capacity is 60Gbps×12 = 720Gbps, S8508
switching capacity is 60Gbps × 8 = 480Gbps, S8505 switching
capacity 60Gbps × 5 = 300Gbps.
About Forwarding Rate:
The forwarding rate of 1GE is 1.488Mpps with 64-byte packet.
S8500 supports 24GE interface model at line rate. So, S8512
forwarding rate is 1.488Mpps × 24 × 12 = 428Mpps, S8508
forwarding rate is 1.488Mpps × 24 × 8 = 285Mpps, S8505
forwarding rate is 1.488Mpps × 24 × 5 = 178Mpps.
