Hebrews 12:1-3Therefore, since we
are surrounded by sucha great cloud of wit-nesses, let us throw offeverything that hindersand the sin that so eas-ily entangles, and let usrun with perseverancethe race marked out forus. Let us fix our eyeson Jesus, the author
and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy setbefore him endured the cross, scorning itsshame, and sat down at the right hand of thethrone of God. Consider him who endured suchopposition from sinful men, so that you will notgrow weary and lose heart.”
When Mike Ditka, was the NewOrleans Saints football coach he hada reputation for optimism, he came
into the locker room to give his team a pre-game pep talk."All right Boys!" he said, "Herewe are, unbeaten, untied and unscored uponand ready for the first game of the season." Theanticipation was that now there are a bunch ofpeople who want to see what you guys can do.
I read about a schoolboy who brought homehis report card. It was heavy with poor grades."What have you to say about this?" asked his
father. "One thing for sure," the boy replied,"Dad, you can be proud. You know I have notbeen cheating!"
Find something to be excited about. Lookahead with positive purposeLook forward they once asked Barry Sanders,
what is your goal when you run the ball? Barrysaid every time I run the ball I keep my eyes onthe end zone. If I ever look anywhere else I willfail. We need to look forward to where God hasasked us to go. If we look anywhere else wewill fail. Amen!
Lee de Forest, 1926, inventor of the cathoderay tube said,”Theoretically, television may befeasible, but I consider it an impossibility; adevelopment which we should waste little timedreaming about.”
Thomas J. Watson, 1943, Chairman of theBoard of IBM said, “I think there is a worldmarket for about five computers.”
Recording company expert, 1962. “We do notthink the Beatles will do anything in their mar-ket. Guitar groups are on their way out.”
All of these people were left behind becausethat had no vision for the future. The biblereminds us that “where there is no vision thepeople parish.” We must not forget the prosper-ous promises He has made or the Positive pos-sibilities he has shown
Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State,Jan. 9, 1989 said, “More than at any time in his-tory, mankind faces a crossroads; one path
leading to despair and utter hopelessness, theother leading to total destruction. Let us praywe have the wisdom to choose correctly.”
Today in the life of the church more than anyother time in history we are facing a crossroads, one path leading to prosperity and another lead-ing to a slow deterioration. Let us pray we havethe wisdom to choose correctly. Never be afraidto trust an unknown future to a known God.
Corrie Ten Boom a holocaust survivor. Someof you may have set your clocks back but youreyes still need to look forward. What do yousee when you look forward?
Maintain a positive attitude. Maintaining apositive attitude is a key to success. Your atti-tude is an inward feeling which is expressed byyour behavior.
Parents are called to a meeting at their child’sclass. The issue; their 5th grade child is causingdisturbances in the class and grades are low.The aptitude tests show that the child has thecapabilities yet he is still failing miserably. Theteacher suggests that the child has a bad atti-tude.We talk about attitudes every day. The truth is
some of the greatest people in the world havehad incredible attitudes, and some of the samepeople have had incredible deficiencies andhandicaps as well.
So as a church you may have some wonder-ful tools but if you maintain a lousy attitudeyou will fail. On the other hand you may not
have every tool you would like, but if you nur-ture an attitude of winning, God is sure to blessthe efforts. Amen!
You need to grasp this concept; “My attitudedictates my performance” Amen!Lou Holtz head coach at Southern California
said, “Ability is what you are capable of doing.Motivation determines what you do. Attitudedetermines how well you do it” John Maxwellrecalls playing a high school basketball teamthat was not having a good season. One day thecoach held a team meeting and said “fellowsyour abilities say win, but your attitudes saylose.”Amen!

PARK.....continued from front cover

By Lola SearcyELITE NEWS STAFF WRITER
It was a day fit for honoring a living legend. The rain from the night before turned outto be a blessing in disguise. The sun
stayed hidden, and the breeze blowing throughthe trees, blew the American flag high abovethe crowd who gathered in attendance to honorour very own, Negro League Pitcher turnednewspaper publisher, Dr. William “Bill” Blair,Jr.
Bill Blair’s friend, Mr. Jerry Bob “TheDuckin Man” Chambers, introduced the ideaof a park to honor his friend, and thus the taskof renaming a park in honor of our SeniorPublisher began. On Saturday, September17th at 10:00 am, at 3000 Municipal Street, theDallas Park and Recreation Departmentrenamed Rochester Park to “William Blair, Jr.Park”.
City officials, dignitaries, family and friendsalike paused to celebrate and honor, Mr. BillBlair. The Kimball Knights and The LincolnTigers marching bands made sure the morningstarted off with music and dance, after whichthe presentation of colors was presented by theYvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center.Former City of Dallas Mayor and currentCouncilman from District 4, Dwaine Carawaytook to the microphone to preside over theactual renaming ceremony.
The invocation was given by Pastor Charles
Lightner of the New Comforter Church of Godin Christ. Afterwards, the New ComforterChurch Choir treated those in attendance witha beautiful, rousing a cappella rendition of theNational Anthem.
Ms. Joan Waine, President of the DallasPark and Recreation Board, extended words ofwelcome. Jordan Blair, Senior Publisher ofthe Elite News and son of Dr. William “Bill”Blair, talked about the life and the legacy of hisfather as he gave the occasion for the morning.
City of Dallas Mayor, Mike Rawlingsoffered expressions of congratulations andgratitude to Mr. Blair on behalf of all of the cit-izens of Dallas, and applauded Mr. Blair forhis leadership of the Elite News for more than50 years and for his service to the city.
Rev. Dr. R.E. Price of the New Mt. ZionBaptist Church, Reverend B.L. Horn of theGolden Chain Baptist Church and Dr. C.C.Robertson, Pastor of the Bexar Street BaptistChurch and President of the NationalMissionary Baptist Convention of America, gave expressions of gratitude to their friendand brother Mr. Bill Blair. John Beckwith, Jr.,CEO of the Golden Gate Funeral Homes alsooffered words of congratulations and gratitudeto Dr. Blair.
Mr. Jordan Blair presented the members ofthe William ‘Bill” Blair Legacy Committeewith Houston Astros baseball caps and he pre-sented his father with an autographed baseballsigned
by Texas Rangers’ Owner and GeneralManager Nolan Ryan. Councilman Carawayread a letter addressed to Mr. Blair from for-mer Negro League player, turned CountryMusic star, Charley Pride, whom Mr. Blairmentored, and a letter from the Negro LeagueMuseum President, Mr. Bob Kendricks. Aproclamation from State Senator Royce Westwas read, after which the honoree himself tookthe podium to thank those in attendance andthe Bill Blair Legacy Committee for all theirhard work in putting the program together.
Mr. Blair has spent many years supportingthe church community, and thus, created thefirst of its kind Religious Hall of Fame. Healso recognizes and honors ordinary peoplewho do extraordinary things in their communi-ties. So it is befitting at this time to honorsomeone who is always thinking of others aswell as better ways to serve his community,Mr. William “Bill” Blair. It’s also absolutelyappropriate to give Mr. Blair this honor whilehe can still enjoy it.
Afterwards, the celebration moved to thebaseball diamond where children of all agesengaged in games of baseball and softball. When the idea of a park being named in Mr.Blair’s honor was first discussed, Mr. Blair hadonly one condition: that the park is used as apositive place for children to come and engagein the sport of baseball and all types of sport-ing activities.
A service well done and a special “ThankYou” to Jerry Bob Chambers for this greatidea, to the Bill Blair Legacy Committee andThe Dallas Parks Foundation, to Dallas MayorMike Rawlings and Councilman DwaineCaraway, to friends and family members, toour sponsors and supporters: The HoustonAstros, The Texas Rangers, Kroger, Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, Elite News, The City ofDallas, Nolan Ryan Meat Co., Dallas CountySchools, ALP Printing, The King Group, theCitizens of Dallas, Mr. John Jenkins, and espe-cially Mr. Kevin Moore and the entire staff ofthe Parks and Recreation Department - thanksfor helping to make this a very memorableoccasion.

Now that the school year is underway with parents and studentssettling into their daily routines,
it’s a good time to review past studyhabits and make some changes that will ensure studentsuccess in school.
Being successful in school is not limited to what hap-pens in the classroom. Parents can assume an importantrole in making sure that their children have good studyhabits.
Select a specific hour for homework. Establishwhen children can watch television and for how long.Establish a specific routine for meals and bedtime.Make sure that your child has the appropriate books, supplies, and a dedicated place for studying. Offer tohelp your child with homework, especially withassignments that may present some difficulty. Mostimportantly, take time to learn what subjects yourchild excels in and which ones are the most difficult.
Establishing a study routine is very important, espe-cially for younger children. It will not only help themwith their study habits but will also help them to realizethe importance of making education a priority in theirlives. How will you help your child develop good study
habits?Another way to help your child succeed is by working
with your child’s teacher. Communicating with theteacher on a regular basis can have a significant impacton your child’s performance in the classroom. Otherways to stay involved are to volunteer at the school, readall handouts that the school principal and teacher sendhome, and attend all parent conferences. An even sim-pler way to gauge your child’s learning is to ask abouttheir day in class; topics discussed, subjects covered, andinteractions with other students.
Parents and teachers are two halves of a team workingto ensure that children acquire the knowledge and skillsthey need to be successful in the grade they are in and beprepared for years ahead. That is why communicatingwith your child’s teacher is crucial. Of course not all par-ents have the opportunity to meet with their children’steachers during the day. The district designates parentconference nights each semester to offer opportunitiesfor parents to visit the school and interact with teachers.
This fall parent conferences are scheduled for 4 to 8p.m. and will be held:
Oct.11 (high school) Oct. 12 (middle school) andOct. 13 (elementary school)
Come prepared to ask questions and to share any cir-cumstances that might affect a student’s progress. Beloware some helpful tips that you can use to prepare for par-
ent conference:Write down specific questions that youhave about your child and ask the teacher.Writedown concerns that you have about your child anddiscuss them with the teacher.Ask for ways to helpyour child at home. Follow up with the teacher afterthe meeting.
Of course, if there are any particular issues that needto be addressed, parents can request a conference anytime of the year by calling the teacher to schedule ameeting.
Mark your calendars for other important dates comingup in Dallas ISD: Monday, Sept. 26 StaffDevelopment/ Student Holiday and Monday, Oct. 24Early release day
For public safety reasons, the Dallas ISD Board ofTrustees has revised the district’s 2011-2012 calendar toprovide separate Fair Days for elementary and second-ary students and staff.
Elementary students and staff will be out of school fortheir Fair Day on Friday, Oct. 7, which will be a regularschool day for secondary students and staff.
Secondary students and staff will be out of school fortheir Fair Day on Friday, Oct. 14, which will be a regu-lar school day for elementary students and staff.

Just HowMagnificent Is
Our God?
All the things Godhave made, andthe way He made
them is mind-boggling.We as humans never really stop and thinkjust how magnificent our God really is. Godmade the universe is such a way that mancan never claim helping or altering God’screation. God made the universe so hugethat man gets bogged down just thinkingabout it. Just how big is our God? How bigis our universe? As we read let us visualizejust how big or how vast God’s thinkingreally is.
Our universe is so huge that it takes abeam of light (which travels 700 millionmiles per hour) over 100,000 years just tocover the distant length of our galaxy calledthe Milky Way. Now watch this – but ourgalaxy is only one among many billions inthe known universe, let’s use the thicknessof a business card to represent the distancefrom the earth to the sun (93 millionmiles). If we used these business cards tomeasure the distance to the nearest star, wewould need a stack of business cards 71feet high. To cover the diameter of ourMilky Way galaxy, we would need a stackof cards 310 miles high. To reach the edgeof the known universe, we would need astack of business cards 31 million mileshigh. If the sun was hollow, one millionthree thousand earths could fit inside. Astar call Antares (if hollow) could holdsixty four million of our suns. In the con-
stellation of Hercules there is a star whichcould contain 100 million of Antares. Thelargest known star, which is called theEpsilon Star, could easily swallow up sever-al million stars the size of the one inHercules. The Epsilon Star if hollow couldhold 27 billion suns.
We are making a weak attempt to illus-trate the magnitude of our universe, whichcontains as many Stars as there are grains ofsand on all the seashores of the world.Furthermore, in Psalm 147:4 and Isa. 40:26,
we are told that God has both numbered andnamed each star. “He calleth them all bytheir names”. Lift up your eyes on high, andbehold who hath created these things, thatbringeth out their host by number; He cal-leth them all names by the greatness of hismight, for that He is strong in power; notone faileth. Isa. 40:26. But more gloriousthan all this is the statement that this sameomnipotent and omniscient God “ healeththe broken in heart and buildeth up theirwounds (Ps. 147:3). A God, who is able tomake or create such a vast world, wouldtake time to heal our broken hearts, evenafter we have been at our worst. We serve amighty God. And church folk, Christian’s,people of the household of faith have thegall to be stingy with God. As Laymen weshould never be stingy with God about ourmoney, our time, and our special skills. These are things, which God has alreadygiven. Laymen should never give it a sec-ond thought about material things given toGod for the upbuilding of God’s kingdomhere on earth. If the laymen of Texas plan togrow or go on to Spiritual growth we havegot to get away from just Sunday morningservice, a dollar in the offering, and fivedollars in tithes. We need to make all serv-ices, witness in the marketplace, and fel-lowship with all brethren everywhere. Godshowed us by His creation how He thinks,God thinks huge, and He also thinks small.God can afford to think both ways if Hewishes to do so, but we are not God and it’shard for us to think in both directions at thesame time, so let’s think Big.
Let us not forget to read our Bibles. MayGod bless you REAL GOOD and may Heever keep you in His loving care.

Naomi must havebeen a lovingperson. Both of
her widowed daughters-in-law wept at thethought of leaving her.Orpah went back to herown family, but Ruth
refused to leave, cry-ing, “. . Where you goI will go and whereyou lodge I will lodge;your people shall be
my people, and your God, my God” (v. 16b).What did she see in Naomi that caused Ruth totrust and love her so? I hope that our childrenwill see such qualities in us. Perhaps it was theunselfish caring that Naomi showed to them.Instead of complaining over her own loss, shewas thinking of what was best for Orpah andNaomi. One of the Seniors complains that her family
doesn’t treat her as they should. She counts thetimes they visit her. She’s never satisfied withthe gifts they give her. Result? Her childrenhave begun to dread visiting her.Someone said “JOY” is spelled “J” for Jesus,
“O” for others, “Y” for “yourself.” If that’s theorder of your priorities, you’ll have JOY.When you read the rest of the story of Ruth, you’ll see that Naomi continued to act inRuth’s best interests. If all of us could forgesuch bonds of love, perhaps more marriageswould last; perhaps family upheaval woulddecrease

Dear Dr. Hollie,
My mother has decidedto start dating again. This would not be a
problem for me if she didn’tchoose to hang out at all mylittle hang out spots. I am 26years old and my mother is 49.I know she is still young andbeautiful and all that goodstuff, but I am sick of going out to a clubor whatever and have to sit and watch mymom slow-grinding all up on somestrange man. It’s ridiculous and embar-rassing. It ruins my whole night. I’veasked her over and over again to stopcoming to where I am, but she ignoresme. I’m starting to think that she’s doingthis to me on purpose. There is justsomething improper about a mother anddaughter partying together, don’t youagree?
It’s Just WrongDear It’s,
I do agree and all of this sounds wrong
to me. Why don’t the two ofyou talk and see if you canfind something fun to dotogether. I’m thinking thatmaybe she really wants yourattention. I hope it works.

was “TeachingValues” Proverbs15:21-33.this is avery importantlesson that we allcould take heed
to, being able totake goodadvice. The les-son teaches that
it is easier to know what to do when weare willing to seek the advice of others. It is not necessary to always experiencethings that are detrimental if we arewilling to hear those that have beenthere and done that. Solomon encour-aged his children to shy away frommaking decisions alone and to avoidhasty decision-making. Seeking advicefrom others promotes sound judgment, support, and success. It is fools who iso-late themselves when they make deci-sions, their overconfidence will leadthem to failure, and they may falterwhen they are met with defeat and real-ize when it is too late that they couldhave avoided the problem if only they
had sought the advice of others.Wisdom says that there is no one thatknows everything, and there is safety ina multitude of council. The morningmessage was delivered by Pastor LloydMorgan from the subject Encouragewhere you can” Deut 1:37-39.Encourage is to give someone hope, confidence, or courage. We live in atime when people need a word ofencouragement sometimes just to get upand face another day. The president isgoing around this nation trying toencourage those that have been unem-ployed for a long time, those that havelost all expectations for a job, to givethem reason to believe that it will getbetter. Everybody at some time needs tobe encouraged by someone. When youhave failed in the past and God havelifted you, use your experience of hisgrace in your life to encourage otherswho may be experiencing a failure intheir spiritual walk. Jesus instructedPeter before his denial to use his experi-ence to strengthen the brothers.
Be blessed!
Eld Lloyd T. Morgan

DISD....continued from page 4schools before Sept. 30 and is available on the district’sWeb site.
On another note, budget issues from this past springcaused the district’s Athletic Department to re-evaluate 7thgrade sports. All middle schools have previously fielded7th grade football, volleyball and basketball teams. To cre-ate consistency among other sports such as soccer, track, baseball and softball, a decision was made to consolidate7th and 8th grade teams. No sports have been eliminatedbut, if budget funds are available, the Athletic Departmentmay allow those schools with significant interest to field7th grade teams in football, volleyball and basketball withan abbreviated schedule.
Corporate, social, professional, civic and communityleaders will greet students, make the morning announce-ments and walk the halls at Dallas ISD schools as theyleave their jobs to become “Principals for a Day” onTuesday, October 4.
Sponsored by Capital One Bank, in partnership with theDallas Regional Chamber and Dallas ISD, the Principal fora Day program gives community leaders the opportunity toexperience firsthand what Dallas ISD principals encounteron a daily basis.
I am excited and proud of the following new schools andtheir principals:
A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School – Brian Lusk,Wilmer-Hutchins High School – Marlon Brooks,Kennedy-Curry Middle School – Regina Rice, BarakObama Male Leadership Academy – Nakia Douglas,
Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School –Torey PageWe applaud the new teachers and local campus staff who
have accepted the challenge to work in these schools and toprovide the best education for our students. How will youshare your time and talents with them?
Hats Off to the donors who provided thousands of backto school supplies and uniforms for our families in needand to the parents and other volunteers who will work side-by-side in our schools to help make this the best year ever!As of today, more than 7,000 individuals have completedtheir online application and are ready to get started. Haveyou signed up to volunteer?
Finally, a very special “Thanks” is due to the communityvolunteers and supporters who made the Saturday, August13 Welcome Back to Wilmer-Hutchins event a tremen-dous success. I received numerous positive comments fromcommunity members. They are excited!
I welcome opportunities to meet with students, parentsand community members about the many successes withDallas ISD, and District 5 in particular. Contact my officeat 972-925-3722 for a list of schools in District 5 where youcan volunteer as a tutor or mentor, or to schedule my visit.

While watching profes-sional sports as long asI have it became appar-
ent to me that there are an awfullot of muscle pulls. It became anissue with me when prior to theWorld Games all of our athletes
that I call weak – hearted started having hamstring prob-lems.
When the number one sprinter in America; Tyson Gaypulled up my eyes popped open. This is a fad these arelosers. Some people might think they’re injury prone -NOT these are losers. In my years in the media I foundout these muscle pulls are direct symptoms of neglect. Agreat number of these athletes have Chiropractors theyemploy to keep their bodies in proper alignment. If
you’re that in tune with your body why don’t you hire anutritionist, muscle pulls and cramps come from the factthat there’s a deficiency or something in your diet.
There are two things I’m tired of hearing in the news.I’m tired of hearing about the lack of rain, and I’m also
tired of hearing Terrence Newman missed practice. Bothhappen every year in August and there’s nothing you cando about either. Terrence will get hurt again this year ifthe Cowboys don’t get him well and cut him. I didn’tcome to call these guys losers without a little research.
How many hamstrings do you think the likes of JerryRice, Walter Peyton, Barry Sanders, Jimmy Brown had.If you choose to make your living with your body, whydon’t you study and take care of it? Some of those thingsare as simple as drinking water and eating Bananas. Theyhave a couple of those dead beats players for the TexasRangers. Adrian Beltre was off so long with a hamstring,I thought they had traded him! Nelson Cruz pull ham-strings watching other people run!
If you know you’re going to lift a lot or squat a lotdrink fluids and eat a lot of foods high in potassium, and
stretch. Dez Bryant will probably take a couple or 3weeks with a bruised quad. Jimmie Brown only woreshoulder pads and helmet, and he never missed a down.No quad bruises, hamstring, or anything else of thatnature. I know Felix Jones hurt a shoulder against the49ers, but Felix will pull a groin or hamstring beforeThanksgiving.
You can count on Felix Jones, Terrence Newman, anda few others getting muscle pulls just like you can counton 100 degree weather in August and rain at the fair inOctober.
You never see Hall of Famers with those loser injuries. It’s always the same guys that get them. I’ll make a dec-laration about a loser right now “you will never see usainBolt run against Tyson Gay. Gay will get that loser’s limpevery time he hears Bolt is in the country. He could behere for Dancing with the Stars or just in the country vis-iting and Gay will make sure he gets hurt!
Martellus Bennett, Terrence Newman, and Felix Joneswill get hurt at their retirement party.

High school football happens to be huge in Texasand has begun to get bigger with some of ourlocal schools defeating out-of-state schools, and
winning by wide margins (i.e., Skyline defeatingMemphis (Tenn.) Ridgeway 47-7; Cocoa (Fla.) 36-20;and Desoto at Oklahoma City Douglass 63-0), to recog-nize Texas as 1 of the powerhouses of high school foot-ball.
Allen is constantly climbing to the top of the NationalRankings followed by Katy, Euless Trinity, Lake Travis,Coppell, Desoto, Skyline, Cibolo Steele, South LakeCarroll and Woodlands, TX, all ranked and playingextremely well. The state of Texas TD record for a highschool career was shattered by Aledo’s Jonathan Gray, setfrom 2006 to 2009 by former Cayuga and currentuniversity of Texas running back Traylon Shead; Grayalso previously announced his intent to play for Texas.
There are a few remaining teams with winning recordswho will put their records up for the taking this weekendin district matchups. Some of the key matchups are: mostanticipated, Allen (3-0), will face Plano (3-0); and Stateranked Euless Trinity (4-0), will face Colleyville Heritage(4-0); these should be both high scoring and full of excite-ment.
Other notable games will be West Mesquite at Lancaster
and Lake Dallas at Denton Ryan. There are a few areaschools on the rise: South Oak Cliff (3-0), Kimball (3-0),and Woodrow Wilson (3-1). Teams with balance normal-ly appear in championship games, but teams with one-dimensional high-powered offenses or defenses areknown to reach championship status. As we get closer tothe middle of the season, teams are already jockeying forposition. Several surprises have occurred such as the 0-3start for the Carter Cowboy’s and West Mesquite, the 3-0start for Kimball and South Oak Cliff, and a 3-1 start forWoodrow Wilson.
There are so many talented teams and players to men-tion, but here is a short list of the week’s highlight gamechanges for this season. Beginning with Highland Park’sQB Brady Burgin, who is 59/78 comp, 75.64 pct, 768 yds,11 TD’s, and 0 Int’s; another notable QB is Lancaster’sDavon Hodge, who is 40/54 comp, 74.07 pct, 615 yds, 7TDs, and 1 int.; Flower Mound has a talented WR in ChasTaylor, 23 rec, 559 yds, 24.3 yds/catch, and 6 TD’s; alsonotable is Frisco’s RB Carlos Harris, 75 att, 856 yds,11.41 yds/att, 13 TD’s; and Lancaster’s Jaquan White, 20rec, 315 yds, 15.8 yds/catch, and 5 TD’s.
Desoto, Skyline, and Allen all have highly rankeddefenses that should have them competing deep into theplayoffs. Our Texas high school football teams havebecome very powerful and competitive. Which areateams will continue winning and remain competitive inthe playoffs?
