1INTRODUCTION

A city. It is the home of civilization and the highest form of social organization. It is a place for everyone to carry out their daily routines. A place for them to live a life on the phase of this earth.

Therefore, for this project, my city ; which name I shall not mention yet, is unstable and not suitable to live for my people (as I am to be a mayor of it). Hence, I have to come up with ways to sustain this city in order for everyone to live harmoniously.

We have to choose to rebuild it either by rebuilding an underground city, an underwater city, a floating on water city, A city in the air or enhancing the existing city. We could also combine two types of cities.



2THE CITY

2.1 The Definition of City

A dynamic centre of everyday human activities. A provision for jobs. A place for social interaction. A place for communication. A place to have the opportunity for cultural

expression. A place to get an education and to learn.

2.2 What Makes a City

Firstly, there is of no use of a City if there are no people. People are what makes a city, people carrying out their daily routines and people living in a City. A City provides shelter and utilities needed by the people to carry out their daily routines. The interaction between human beings, and the natural and built environment is what makes a city.



2.3 What Makes a Good City?

Firstly, everyone would like to live in a place that is pleasant and very people orientated. Therefore, a city that is for the people makes a good city. The way the city works and the way the city flows should be tended for the people.

Secondly, a good city should be very people tended, so that, the citizens of the city would be happy conducting their daily routines without any unnecessary stress due to the surroundings. Hence, a city would need to have good systemic efficiency in current infrastructure to ease the flow of pedestrians, transportation and growth of development.

Furthermore, in our current state of development, we face many global downfall issues such as global warming and over consumption of energy. Therefore, energy production ought to be shifted to low carbon alternative in order to overcome this issue and to create an environmentally friendly place.

Everyone loves to enjoy the sight and freshness of beautiful greens as well as the art and structure of buildings. Therefore, to have the best of both worlds and a perfect balance of these two elements, a city ought to have a good balance between the natural and built environment.

As said earlier on, a city is for the people and it contains the people and the people are what makes a city and are what develops a city. Therefore, a vibrant community of people filled with life is essential to what makes a good city.

Another point is a city that has a safe and friendly environment for the people to enjoy and have a pleasant experience to where they are living in. A good city is a place where relationships are made and bonded to gain



trust in a place they live in. Hence, safety is formed as trust and bonds are formed between the people.

A good city should provide functional and personal space for the people to adapt emotionally. By this, the people would learn how to appreciate and take care of the city they live in as a bond is made.

Like a tree, a city should grow and at the same time, be grounded to its roots. It should sustain its culture and heritage and maintain the beauty of it and at the same time, it should develop to be a more sustainable living space.

Lastly, a good city is a place and a location which provides a pleasant experience which brings people of different backgrounds together.

COLLECTION - ANCIENT CITIES

The central focuses of the ancient cities were temples/ religious places where majority of the people gathers,

courtyards, and government centres, city squares, market squares and fences to defence against wars. The social

life and lifestyle and jobs consisted of mostly farming, craftwork, agriculture and religious activities.

3.1 When Did Ancient Cities Come About?

Cities came about when people stopped being nomads and settled at a place. It is a revolution of civilization from farms to villages and then to cities.

Cities started to be built when craftsmen, traders, priest, soldiers, and officials came together in building houses (buildings). Thus, the interaction between people and shelter formed permanent living and hence, a city to where people could carry out their daily routines and activities.



3.2 Focusing on :

BABYLON – The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Babylon is an ancient city of Mesopotamia. The city of Babylon was built upon Euphrates and was divided into equal parts along the left and the right banks to contain the river’s seasonal floods.

It is also known as the Hanging Gardens of Semeranis. This garden was built by Nebuchadnezzar to please his wife who had been longing for trees and exotic plants.

The Hanging Gardens is not exactly hanging. In fact, it is covered and paved in greens and a lot of plants, draped over the sides of the terrace on brick structure. The approach to the garden is sloped like a hillside and several parts of the structure rose from one another,



tier on tier. The amount of greens and plants on this building is something to focus on in today’s urbanization.

It is said to be thickly planted with trees of every kind. As Babylon rarely received rain, in order for the garden to survive, water from the nearby Euphrates River was used to water the plants by using a chain pump. Ref : (http://youtu.be/gNAiWCOHh8k)

Although there are not enough / no archeological proof, the idea of a building draped with plants and covered with plants is something very captivating. It also shows a balance between the natural and built environment and the relationship bonded between both elements to form an amazing structure.

EGPYT – Lighthouse of Alexandria

This lighthouse was founded by Alexandria the Great. This lighthouse serves as a prototype to all the ongoing lighthouses through out the years, It’s light (at the top) is produced by the furnace and is built mostly with solid blocks of limestone. The lighthouse is made out of 3 stages. The lower section is a central core, and going up, the middle section is an octagonal section followed by the top – a circular section. A mirror is located at the apex to reflect sunlight during the day and during the night, fire would be lit.

The design of this lighthouse is very monumental and provides a lot of function as well.



3.3 Information and Elements from Ancient City to Implement in New City

The Hanging Garden of Babylon

This garden, or building highlights the usage of plants (landscape) to enhance and beautify the city and the building. In actual fact, the usage of plants paving a building has a lot of benefits in terms of sustainability and could be implemented into my New City. The plants covering not only beautifies and acts as a decorative and art form of a building but also provides shelter, and reduces energy by cooling down the house. As plants transpire, the dew produced by the plants is able to be used to cool down the house. A lot of oxygen is released as well causing a slight drop of temperature. Futhermore, the trees and plants acts as a shelter to shelter the sun and heat away. This is a good way to enhance and sustain a city by using natural elements.

Lighthouse of Alexandria

The structure of this lighthouse could act as a monument for the New City. It gives the space a very unique character and acts as an iconic structure. It also is able to act as a main focal point for the people and citizens as it stands out (as it acts as a monument). It also possesses a distinctive character to the place and has many reference points as well. It is surrounded by buildings built in a square which could function as a city square.

Both Cities Combined



From both cities, the New City is able to derive and get inspiration from these two cities in terms of sustainability. Both cities use local building materials for construction. This will contribute to the New City as it cuts down the usage of fuel for transporting building materials.

3.4 Conclusion

In conclusion, these elements are able to be implemented into the New City in terms of structure, art and sustainability. The ideas and design of both cities can be used to integrate ancient design to modern and present designs to produce a New City to increase sustainability.

CITIES

As compared to the past, religious buildings are not as important anymore and not the meeting point of majority of citizens as we are very globalized now. The present

cities are more prominent towards commercial and business which is the majority of people’s preoccupation. People now adays gather around shopping malls and commercial

areas more.

4.1 Present City : Seoul, Korea



Seoul, Korea is a very fast developing city in our present movement. It has 2000 years of history and is one of the largest metropolitan city. It has sustained its ancient past (for example, the Folk Village) in order to show and portray its unique culture. On the other hand, it is an on going growing modern city filled with modern architecture to balance with the ancient heritage that is kept. Seoul is filled with high density buildings which forms a vast arrays of sky scrapers.

4.2 Focusing On : Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Parks



This present yet futuristic building designed by Zaha Hadid acts as a park as well as a plaza. The park contains adjoining flea markets as well as street vendors for the public to enjoy and relax. The plaza contains an underground mall which has a fashion plaza too. The plaza also contains a multipurpose convention hall and a number of exhibition halls, lecture halls, seminar rooms and fashion design information centre. Another interesting fact of the structure of this plaza and park is that is contains a multi-use carpark to prevent traffic congestion and to ease the public. Futhermore, it restored a number of items of natural heritage.

This is green building as it contains a green roof to cool down the place as well. Something like the hanging garden from the past.

4.3 Information and Elements from Past City to Implement in New City

The on going modern and urban development of this city and its ability to sustain its traditional heritage at the same time is something to implement in the New City.

This city shows a perfect balance between urban and ancient heritage to produce a dynamic balance as the city is very much kept to its roots.

Taking elements from the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Parks, which acts as a park as well as a plaza shows the dynamic balance between the natural and the built environment. This park/plaza is built to also form a bond between human beings and the environment for people to enjoy and have a great time at a great environment.

The Green Roof. The green roof is a very interesting feature of the building to implement in the New City. This is because, it acts as a park which promotes a healthy lifestyle. The interaction between the park and the building also shows a balance between the natural and



built environment. The Green Roof not only helps with the cityscape but it also cools down the area / provides good insulation.

The Plaza. The plaza which contains many convention centres, galleries and museums acts as a place for cultural expression and exchange. It also promotes its country’s very own heritage and history as it contains a museum. It also highlights the art atmosphere as there is a design gallery so people can show their art works to be looked at and be appreciated by other the public. All of these are very important to have in the New City as a city is a place provided for all of these social activities and cultural exhange.

The multi-story Parking Lot. This is important for the New City as it maximizes the parking space in a given piece of land to ease traffic flow and to prevent traffic congestion when heading into the inner city. Furthermore, it helps to optimize land usage as well and hence, safe cost.

4.4 Conclusion

In conclusion, the ever growing and developing city of Seoul, Korea shows a dynamic balance of many elements that is important to develop a city. Its richness in heritage and culture and ability to sustain it is something very admirable that should be implemented in the New City.



5INVESTIGATION AND DATA

COLLECTION - FUTURE CITIES

As a lot of change is occurring in our present cities, such as global warming, population growth and increase of vehicles on roads, the future city is responsible to over

come it.

5.1 Present City : Masdar City, Abu Dhabi

Masdar City, would be the world’s first zero-carbon city, free of cars and skyscrapers. What so special about this city is its ability to generate energy by using natural resources to set back high energy consumption that has been occurring in our present cities. Being the biggest



solar farm in the Middle East, the main source of its energy comes from the sun. The reflection of sunlight on circular field of mirrors of the ground, produces heat to drive generators.

Another way that this city reduces energy consumption is by building wind towers to encourage breeze. Thin foil surface covering a gas / vacuum blanket is used to keep the heat out from the city as well.

As pollution is the main problem we are facing in our current urbanization, the Mazdar City has come up with ways to overcome it such as introducing driverless vehicles. Conventional cars must be checked in at city gates so you can choose between the MRT or by walking. Magnetic sensors powered by solar energy act as a guide to sensor where you are.

Other renewable resources are by recycling water as many times as possible as the main goal of this city is to reduce waste to zero. Furthermore, narrow and shaded trees help funnel cooler breezes across the city.

5.2 Focusing On : Polyvoltaic Electricity Generation



It traps the sun’s energy to reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, they are hoping that the solar and geothermal heat would be able to run chillers and be tested as possible air-conditioning.

5.3 Conclusion

All of these modern technology built in order to sustain energy and to improve the environment should be implemented by all growing cities in the on going urbanization. This is the city of tomorrow.

6INTRODUCING – OCTOGREEN

6.1 When and why did this city come about?

The present. Our ongoing human activities and greed has made our present city not livable. Global warming together with the imbalance of the natural and built environment has made this city unsuitable for the main element that makes the city – the people.

Hence, the only way to overcome this issue is to enhance the city to a green city, promoting a green and healthy lifestyle for everyone in order to live. A city is a



place or a habitat for the people and in order to make the city sustainable is to have a balance between the natural and built environment suitable for the people.

6.2 Who are the people?

For my city, there is a wide variety of people coming together at a place to express their culture to create a city rich in culture and heritage. The people of my city are open and is a huge community of variety of people from different parts of the world, holding on and bringing their roots to this city.

6.3 What makes my city and what do I want?

I as a “mayor” want my city green, painted with trees and plants to overcome all the natural disasters that has been happening. I want a place where people would feel connected and have a bond to where they live and are emotionally connected to it. Furthermore, I want a city full of culture and heritage so that my citizens are aware of their roots and stick to it. I also want a safe city, where people are not afraid to leave their house, where great bonds are formed between the citizens. Furthermore, like the Masdar City, I want a city that is able to sustain energy.
