EASTMAN CONCERTS SPRING 2015 19

TABLE of CONTENTS

Jamal J. Rossi, Joan and Martin Messinger Dean of the Eastman School of Music

Twice a year, Encore highlights dozens of performances at the Eastman School of Music. Eastman faculty artists with well-established careers explore new repertoire or collaborate with new colleagues; students who are tomorrow’s young musical stars can be heard at the beginning of their careers.

Another vital part of every semester at Eastman is guest appearances by important artists. These guests not only make memorable music, they also become a vital part of our students’ education: jazz greats, stars of the opera world and Broadway, concert headliners, prominent conductors and

composers, first-chair players in the world’s great orchestras, and other major forces in the music business.

In its long history, Eastman has welcomed many of the world’s great performers and composers. In 1966, Igor Stravinsky conducted the Philharmonia in his Firebird Suite, and in 1989, Sir Georg Solti led the orchestra in Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Several years ago we welcomed our alumna Renée Fleming as a guest artist with the Philharmonia; last year a sold-out Kodak Hall greeted Itzhak Perlman. These were all uniquely exciting experiences, still talked of at Eastman.

On February 21, the great pianist Peter Serkin, the son of another great pianist, Rudolf Serkin, will perform a Mozart concerto with the Philharmonia (see page 8 for details) as part of our “Eastman Presents” series. Other distinguished Eastman guests in the coming months include the Emerson String Quartet and Metropolitan Opera mezzo Stephanie Blythe.

Great musicians like all those listed above not only bring excitement to Kodak Hall and Kilbourn Hall, they give our students the great benefits of their artistry and experience in open rehearsals and master classes. It is a great honor to help bring them to our students and to the Rochester community.

I will be part of the audience at many of the events listed in this edition of Encore, and I invite you to join me.

Jamal J. Rossi

Our Town takes place in 1901 in the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, but it proves that “our town” is everywhere. In 2006, composer Ned Rorem and librettist J.D. McClatchy turned Thornton Wilder’s theatrically innovative play into a moving opera. A Stage Manager is the narrator, commentator, and guide through Wilder’s story of love, life, and death among the Gibbs and the Webb families; the play’s profound emotions are heightened through Rorem’s lyrical music.

PETER SERKINPeter Serkin’s heritage includes several generations of great musicians: his grandfather was violinist Adolf Busch, and his father pianist Rudolf Serkin. He made his New York debut in 1959 at age 12, and has since collaborated with the world’s major symphony orchestras and most eminent conductors and chamber musicians. A renowned interpreter of composers from Bach and Mozart to Carter and Takemitsu, Peter Serkin will perform Mozart’s Concerto No. 19 with the Philharmonia under Neil Varon as part of the EASTMAN PRESENTS series.
