Page 2: Endangered Species

Endangered species are species facing a high risk of extinction. Species are usually endangered because of habitat destruction, introduction of exotic species, or overexploitation. There are many species endangered, but if we work hard, we can save them.

Habitat DestructionIntroduction of exotic species

Overexploitation of fish

If we don’t save the endangered species, one day, there will be no animals left. We will have nothing to eat, because all plants and animals depend on one another. Plus, many plants and animals produce important medicine.

Governments have put laws to make fur traders to stop hunting endangered animals. It works mostly, but some people still hunt endangered animals.

Some researchers have tried breeding endangered species together to increase their numbers and then release them into the wild. This method is usually successful.

National Parks protect the environment a species live in. It is successful, but it only protects species inside the park.

Gray wolves were saved partly because of new laws.

The number of species that have gone extinct is 801.

The number of species extinct in the wild is 64.

The number of species critically endangered is 3,879

The most endangered animal is the Amur Leopard at just 40 leopards left.

We can save species simply by not polluting. For example, we can stop using harmful chemicals, use transportation other than car if possible, or not throw anything into the ocean. There are many ways to stop pollution, but not enough people try.

If the problem isn’t solved, there will be no wild species left.

We get a lot of clean water and air from the species on earth, so if they go extinct we will have dirty air and water

There will be no more medicine that are extracted from them, which could possibly mean no more cure for a illness or injury.
