INFRINGEMENT

The BMC air filter is composed of a metallic mesh covered by an oiled multilayer cotton filtration material. This guarantees a high level of filtering efficiency and a limited loss of air pressure.

The oil used gives the material its “sticky” adhesive characteristic which aids in the retention of air impurities, without compromising or blocking air flow penetration. This also creates a continuous filtering process.

Once the pre-established life-span of the filter has been reached it can be “regenerated” through a washing process allowing it to be reused again and again.

The cotton filtrating element is contained within an external support frame which allows it to be securely installed in the air-box. Such structures are produced from materials suitable for the performance demanded.

The support frame structures are manufactured using a procedure called “Full Moulding” which enables the production of the characteristic red filter from a single mould without the need for gluing at the corners, often the cause of easy breakage.

Generally filtration of particles as small as 10 microns is required in order to avoid any risk of intake of foreign bodies that could damage the mechanical components of the air-intake system (mass air-flow sensor, injectors, valves).

Air filters that are standard equipment on production vehicles are made of paper and their principal function is to protect the engine. These filters present an elevated resistance to the passage of air and consequently a reduction in engine performance.

Compared to a paper filter the BMC air filter permits a notably higher air flow passage. In addition, a traditional paper filter must be replaced regularly during routine maintenance whilst the BMC air filter is reusable and has a general life-span equal to that of the vehicle.

Another type of air filter currently available on the market are those produced from synthetic materials of the type which BMC manufactures and has been using for non road applications for many years.

The principal difference between BMC oiled cotton filters and synthetic material filters (for example, plastic material cloth) is seen in

the ability to retain air impurities.

Synthetic filters allow the passage to particles smaller than the size of the tiny holes in the filtration material – this means that a filter with 80 micron holes allows the passage of all elements of a size smaller than the hole, only guaranteeing containment of particles larger than the dimension of the hole (for example – sand has a dimension of around 50 microns).

The cotton has a wider texture which favours a greater air-flow passage and through the combination of the different oiled layers, guarantees containment of all impurities from as small as 7 microns. Today, this concept represents the best solution for the filtration/performance relationship, chosen by Auto makers for their top products.

BMC operates in a number of areas: automotive, racing, aerospace, nautical and industrial according to the specific regulations and requirements of each and every one of this sectors. Consequently, BMC tests are severe and thorough, thus ensuring the highest quality in respect to paper, foam and plastic materials.

The technical solutions used by BMC are derived from the results of a continuous and intense programme of laboratory tests.

BMC carries out filtration tests

in reference to the international standards for filtering (ISO 5011).

This standard indicates the test methodology for filtration systems and the type of dust to use in testing: this concerns particularly fine dusts which are graded as follows: range A:1 – 80 microns (ISO Fine), range B:1 – 200 microns (ISO COARSE).

BMC Air Filters have a 98.5% filtering efficiency in respect to this standard. BMC engineers have run several tests to make sure that their filters were the best in the business.

The first graphic shows a comparison between a BMC filter and a filter with a plastic filtering element (100μm). The test is run using a dust type named ISO COARSE 5011, made of particles between 1 and 200 μm. It shows that the BMC filter has a 98.5% efficiency rate, where the plastic material has a 10% efficiency rate. The air filter has to provide the lowest possible loss of pressure (that is the difference between the upper and lower pressure values of the filtration system). This second test shows that a BMC filter has a much lower loss of pressure than an OEM paper filter.

BMC AIR FILTERS : WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Why you should change your standard air filter:

Common OE factory standard filters include Paper and Foam which may have a lower initial cost but can cause a loss of power, poor fuel economy or even expensive engine damage.

Standard OE filters can deliver:

A shorter service life; A low volume turbulent airflow; A poor filtration (especially foam).

The unique construction of BMC Air Filters results in both Increased Power and Improved Fuel Economy.

A high level of filtering efficiency is guaranteed with containment of all impurities down to 7 microns, where paper filters generally only offer 10 microns.

The four-ply multilayer cotton filtration element is contained within an external metallic support frame which interfaces with the air-box allowing it to be securely installed; it is also highly heat-resistant with superior sealing properties.

BMC developed production system based on soft rubber moulding, made in a single piece using a system called “Full Moulding”. No welded joints, avoiding breakage or deformation.

As cotton is a natural material which can be reused several times the filter can be washed with the BMC Cleaning and Regeneration kits and then re-oiled, saving the cost of changing the air filter each time the vehicle is serviced.

BMC air filters have a general lifespan equal to that of the vehicle.

Based in Bologna, Italy, BMC is now an international company with branches in Germany, Japan and USA, along with over 40 distributors all over the world. BMC produces the world’s best quality air filters both for racing and for street use.

The BMC Air Filter Company is today the leader in the production of high performance air filters and air induction systems. BMC air filters are designed and constructed by Italian technicians to give the highest performance in extreme conditions.

Since 1996 BMC Air Filters has equipped some of the most important teams in Formula 1 and the American Le Mans Series such as Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Porsche and Audi, thus demonstrating the high quality level of the product.

This experience combined with 10 years of collaboration with the best teams committed to the most important international car races, is transferred to aftermarket production to obtain a product of high quality, performance and reliability which is in constant evolution and with no equal on the market.

The wide range of BMC air filters includes various products such as classic panel and cylindrical filters as replacements to original paper filters; conical filters for direct induction; the OTA – Oval Trumpet Airbox, the CDA – Carbon Dynamic Airbox and the DIA – Direct Intake Air system, the BMC “Junior” dynamic air intake system.

To complement the various intake systems there is also a large range of specific accessories available to simplify fitting and installation.

BMC air filters are produced using a “Full Moulding” system that enables the characteristic red filter to be realised from a single mould with no welded joints thus avoiding easy breakage. The rubber used in BMC air filtering systems has a long life, is very durable and has optimum adhesion characteristics to all shapes of airboxes.

The filtering element is composed of layers of special cotton gauze soaked with low viscosity oil for better filtration efficiency without compromising air flow penetration. The element is covered with an epoxy coated alloy mesh to ensure protection from petrol fumes and oxidization due to air humidity. BMC filtration systems give better performance to the engine, both in terms of power and torque without compromising reliability. BMC air filters are washable and reusable by using the appropriate washing kit.
