provide one of the best defenses against car-diovascular disease and are also well knownfor their positive influence on brain functionand mood. In addition, Omega 3 fatty acidsfrom fish oil have been shown to provideimpressive anti-inflammatory benefits byreducing specific pro-inflammatory cytokinesand Series 2 prostaglandins, while increas-ing the level of anti-inflammatory Series 3prostaglandins.

Why Omega 3 Only?

Our bodies cannot make the Omega 3 andOmega 6 essential fatty acids (EFAs), hencethe name “essential.” It is essential that weobtain them from dietary sources. Most of usdo more than fine with Omega 6 intake; it’sthe Omega 3s that come up short. Recentresearch points to a 1:3 ratio as ideal, but1:20 (Omega 3 to Omega 6) is common inmost people’s diets. Glaringly missing in themajority of the American diets are adequateamounts of Omega 3s, which are vital forathletic performance and absolutely essen-tial for overall health. Consumption ofcertain types of fish (such as salmon, mack-erel, and sardines) two to three times a week, while being an extremely wise strategy, issimply not possible for most of us.

Why Not Get Omega 3 From Flaxseed Oil?

In the world of fats it’s hard to beat flaxseedoil (the primary component of Omegasource);

i t ’s got an attractive EFA makeup in that it is54% Omega 3 (from alpha Linolenic A c i d ) ,14% Omega 6 (Linoleic Acid), and the remain-der primarily various monounsaturated fats.H o w e v e r, given the fact that most diets arealready loaded with Omega 6 fatty acids, theO-6s in flaxseed oil are not really necessary. In fact, for highest absorption rates, Omega 6should not be consumed with Omega 3, asthey both require the same enzyme fora b s o r p t i o n .

The bottom line is that wereally don’t need any supple-mental Omega 6s. We doneed Omega 3 EFAs, and weneed a lot of them to achieveappreciable amounts of thedesired end products ofOmega 3 EFA m e t a b o l i s m ,Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)and Eicosapentaenoic acid( E PA). Omegasource had noactual DHA or EPA in it.Instead, it had about 157 mgof alpha linolenic acid (ALA)in each 1000 mg capsule.A L A is a couple metabolicsteps away from becoming actual DHA &E PA, and due to the aging process andother factors, some-to-most of that A L Awill never be converted to DHA & EPA.

So really, the amount of DHA/EPA in just onecapsule of the Carlson Norwegian Fish Oilproduct will be equal to or greater than what 10or more Omegasource capsules could provide.

Carlson - Your Source for Pure, Clean,Contaminant-Free Norwegian Salmon Oil

Carlson has a long history of producing thehighest quality fish oil supplements, which iswhy we’re pleased to include their NorwegianSalmon Oil product alongside our own supple-ments and fuels. Each Carlson NorwegianSalmon oil soft gel contains one gram

(1000mg) of salmon oil fromsalmon found in the deep, unpolluted waters of Norway. This product is regularly testedusing AOAC international pro-tocols for potency and purity byan independent, FDA r e g i s-tered laboratory and found tobe free of detectable levels ofm e r c u r y, cadmium, lead, PCBs,and 28 other contaminants.Carlson Norwegian Salmon Oilsupplies your body with con-centrated amounts of pure,contaminant-free, and ultra-healthy Omega 3 essentialfatty acids... essential for ath-letic performance and overall

health.

Suggested Usage: Two or more soft gels twiced a i l y, preferably with meals.

products - nutrients like CoQ10 andIdebenone (in Race Caps Supreme) andAcetyl l-carnitine and r-Alpha lipoic acid (inMito-R Caps) - you’d be online for an awfullylong time; the benefits of just these fournutrients are incredibly extensive. To simpli-fy things though, here’s what I consider theprimary benefits from the consistent use ofthese products:

1 . ) Provides ideal replenishment of basic vita-mins and minerals, which athletes deplete ingreater volume than sedentary people, tooptimize overall health.2 . ) Provides enhanced support for theimmune system and cardiovascular systemby supplying a wide range of antioxidants for

the neutralization of free radicals and the cel-lular destruction they cause.

3 . ) Provides key substrates to enhance andensure efficient production of energy.

4 . ) Provides support for mitochondrialhealth. Our belief is that the longer you canstimulate the lifespan or health of the mito-chondria, the longer you will live and thebetter you will perform in endurance events. The athlete who has the most healthy, effi-cient, active mitochondria is the athlete whoperforms at their best.

The three E-CAPS Daily Essentials productsare available in two money-saving kits: theone-month kit (one bottle of each) is $99.95 -about a $10.00 savings compared to the indi-

(DAILY ESSENTIALS from page 1) vidual prices of the three products - and thethree-month kit (three bottles of each) is$289.95 - a nearly $40.00 savings.

So, if you’re looking for the best way to get yourseason off to a strong start (and who isn’t?), Ithink that employing these three products intoyour program, and using them each and everyd a y, is an awfully wise strategy.

By William Knoff

Article extracted from Perceptions,May-June 1996 Medical ResearchSummary; Potential Use in Mind Control

Microwave cooking ovens were originallyresearched and developed by German scien-tists to support mobile operations during theinvasion of the Soviet Union. Had they per-fected electronic equipment to prepare mealson massive scale, the Nazis could have elim-inated the logistical problems connectedwith cooking fuels while producing edibleproducts in far less time than they couldusing traditional campfires.

After the war, the Allies discovered the med-ical research and documentation concerningthese apparatuses. The papers and experi-mental microwave equipment weretransferred to the U.S War Department andclassified for reference and scientific investi-gation. The Soviet Union also retrieved someof the devises and began to experiment onthem separately. The Russians - who havedone the most diligent research into the bio-logical effects of microwave ovens haveoutlawed their use and issued an interna-tional warning about the biological andenvironmental damage that can result fromthe use of this and similar-frequency elec-tronic apparatus.

Medical research summary

The most significant German research con-cerned with the biological effects ofmicrowaves was done at the Humbolt-Universitat zu Berlin in 1942-43, urging theBarbarossa military campaign. Beginning in1957 and continuing up to the present,Russian studies in the field have been con-ducted at the Institute of Radio Technology.

In most research, the foods were exposed tomicrowave propagation at an energy poten-tial of 100 kilowatts per cubic centimeter persecond, to the point considered acceptablefor sanitary, normal ingestion.

The observations made by the German andRussian microwave researches will be pre-sented here in three categories:cancer-causing effects, destruction of nutri-tive value and biological effects of directexposure of humans to microwave emissions.

Microwaved Foods Cause Tumors

The following effects have been observed whenfoods are subject to microwave emissions.

Effects on the foods themselvesMeats: Heating prepared meats sufficientlyto ensure sanitary ingestion creates d-nitrosodiethanolamine, a well knowncancer-causing agent.Proteins: Active-protein, biomolecular com-pounds are destabilized.Increase in radioactivity: A “ b i n d i n geffect” between the microwaved food and anyatmospheric radioactivity is created, causinga marked increase in the amount of alphaand beta particle saturation in the food.Milk and cereals: Cancer-causing agentsare created in the protein-hydrolysate com-pound in milk and cereal grains.Frozen food: Microwaves used to thawfrozen foods alter the catabolism (breakdown)of the glucoside and galactoside elements.

Resulting effects on the human body

Digestive system: The unstable catabolismof microwaved food alters their elementalfood substances, causing disorders in thedigestive system.Lymphatic system: Due to chemical alter-ations within food substances, malfunctionsoccur in the lymphatic system, causing adegeneration of the body’s ability to protectitself against certain forms of neoplastics(cancerous growths).Free radicals: Certain trace-mineral molec-ular formations in plant substances-inparticular, raw root vegetables-form cancer-causing free radicals.

Increased incidence of stomachand intestinal cancers

A statistically higher percentage of cancer-ous growths result in these organs, plus ageneralized breakdown of the peripheral cel-lular tissues and a gradual degeneration ofdigestive and excretory functions.

Microwaves Reduce Food Value

Microwave exposure caused significantdecreases in the nutritive value of all foodsstudied. The following are the most impor-tant findings to this date.

Vitamins and minerals made useless: Inevery food tested, the bioavailability of thefollowing vital nutrients decreased: vitaminB complex, vitamins C and E, essential min-erals and lipotropics.Vital energy fields devastated: The vitalenergy field content of all tested foodsdropped 60-90%. Digestibility of fruits andvegetables reduced: Microwaving lowers themetabolic behavior and integration-processcapability of alkaloids, glucosides, alacto-

sides and nitrilosides.Meat protein worthless: It destroys thenutritive value of nucleoproteins in meats. All foods damaged: It greatly acceleratesthe structural disintegration of all foods tested.

Biological Effects of Microwaves

Exposure to microwave emissions also has anegative effect upon the general biologicalwelfare of humans. This was not discovereduntil the Russians experimented with highlysophisticated equipment and discovered thathumans can be adversely affected withouteven ingesting the foods that have been sub-jected to microwave emissions. Merelyentering the energy field of the food causesharmful side-effects that the Soviets out-lawed all such microwave apparatus in 1976.

Here are the effects observed in humans hav-ing “direct” exposure to microwaves, that is,without their having consumed the irradiat-ed food substances: Life-energy fieldbreakdown: Persons near microwave ovensin operation experience a breakdown of theirlife-energy fields which increases relative tothe length of the exposure.

Cellular energy decreases: The cellular-voltage parallels of individuals using theapparatus degenerate - especially in theirblood and lymphatic serums.Destablized metabolism: The external-energy activated potentials of food utilizationare both destabilized and degenerated.Cell damage: Internal cellular-membranepotentials during catabolic processes into theblood serum from the digestive processdegenerate and destabilize.Brain circuitry destruction: E l e c t r i c a limpulses in the junction potentials of thecerebrum degenerate and breakdown.Nervous system: Nerve/electrical circuitsdegenerate and break down while energy-field symmetry is lost in the neuro-plexuses(nerve centers) in both the front and rear ofthe central and autonomic nervous systems.Loss of bioelectric strength: The bio-elec-tric strengths within the ascending reticularactivating system (the system which controlsthe function of waking consciousness) go outof balance and lose their proper circuiting.Loss of vital energies: Humans, animalsand plants located within a 500-meter radiusof the equipment in operation suffer a long-term, cumulative loss of vital energies.Nervous and lymphatic systems damage:Long-lasting residual magnetic “deposits”become located throughout the nervous sys-tem and lymphatic system.Hormone imbalances: The production of

Q U E S T I O N : Any comments on therecent the negative finding(s) regard-ing Vitamin E intake over 400 iu(International Units) daily?

ANSWER : I argue that if taking higher vita-min E dose decreases longevity of only 10%of the subjects, then what about the other90%? This borders on throwing the prover-bial baby out with the bath water. Kind ofreminds me of the smokers whose beta-carotene intake was implicated with lungcancer and other diseases.

Studies should ideally examine two popula-tions, healthy norms and patients, thencompare data. Please note the referencedsubjects were called “patients” in the 19studies, that is, already sick subjects. Theyhad heart disease, cancer, or Alzheimer’s dis-ease (Dickinson). The definitive study is totest vitamin E in a healthy population, thencompare to the sick “patient” population.

Please also note Dickinson’s rebuttal state-ment to WebMD: Annette Dickinson, PhD,president of the Council for ResponsibleNutrition, “Eighteen of the 19 studies in theanalysis showed no statistically significantincrease in total mortality. I believe theypooled the data to arrive at a conclusion thatis based on a statistical artifact.”

In the mid-1990’s we worked with a cardiolo-gist and several associated clinics whoregularly prescribed 2200 iu vitamin E/dayfor cardiopathology-compromised patients. At that time I thought 800 iu was ODA[Optimal Daily Amount], adequate forendurance athletes, and initially I resistedthe suggestion to dose above 800 iu fat solu-ble vitamin E. As I searched the evidencehowever, I concluded that this cardiologistand his associates were rational to enhancetheir patients’ health welfare objective bythis higher dose. You would therefore thinkthat if an ill heart patient were given a

hormones and the maintenance of hormonalbalance in both males and females becomesdestabilized and interrupted.Brainwave disruptions: Levels of distur-bance in alpha-, delta- and theta-wave signalpatterns are markedly higher than normal.Psychological disorders: Because of thedisarranged brain waves, negative psycho-logical effects also result. These include lossof memory and ability to concentrate, sup-pressed emotional threshold, deceleration ofintellective processes and interruptive sleepepisodes in a statistically higher percentageof individuals subjected to continual range-emission field effects of microwaveapparatus, from either cooking apparatus ortransmission stations.

Potential Use In Mind Control

Due to the creation of random, residual mag-netic deposits and binding within thebiological systems of the body (nervous andlymphatic systems damage) which can ulti-mately affect the neurological systems(primarily the brain and nerve centers),longer-term depolarization of tissue neuro-electronic circuits can result. Because theseeffects can cause virtually irreversible dam-age to the neuroelectrical integrity of thevarious components of the nervous system, ingestions of microwaved foods is clearly con-traindicated in all respects.

Their residual magnetism effect can renderthe psychoneural-receptor components of thebrain more subject to influence by artificial-ly induced, microwave-radio-frequency fieldsfrom transmission stations and TV relay net-works. Soviet neuropsychologists atUralyera and Novosibirsk have theorized thepossibility of psychotelmetric influence (i.e.,affecting human behavior by transmittingradio signals at controlled frequencies), caus-ing subjects to comply - involuntarily andsubliminally - with commands receivedthrough microwave transmissions actingupon their psychological energy fields.

For this reason, and due to the 28 other con-traindications listed above, the use ofmicrowave apparatus in any form is definite-ly ill-advised. Present scientific opinion inmany countries clearly opposes them, asexemplified by the mentioned Soviet ban.

Thank you to the Idaho Observer for allowing us toreprint this article originally from Leading Edge

Research.

continued from page 4 harmful dose with life-shortening propertiesthat these clinics would have experiencedlitigious issues. Last I heard their resultsfrom high vitamin E therapeutic dose above2000 iu per day were quite positive. Thoughthat dose is high, it has not been associatedwith harmful side effects in normal subjects, but is excessive in terms of what is the idealminimal dose of 800 iu/day. I make thisstatement to point out that vitamin E dose(even high dose) is well tolerated in humanmetabolism. Foods do not contain highamounts of vitamin E, meaning to consumethe ideal 800 iu daily or more, one must sup-plement.

Vitamin E deficiency, on the other hand, is adangerous proposition and is reported toprosper onset of various cardiovascular dis-ease events. Both ischemic and coronaryartery disease patients may present withinadequate food-born vitamin E. Athleteswho burn fatty acid fuels during prolongedaerobic exercise produce free-radical metabo-lites that may further reduce circulatingvitamin E antioxidant levels. In my opinion,800 iu vitamin E is the minimal intake prac-tice for an endurance athlete. The sedentarysubject’s intake level can be reduced by 50%,but taking the same amount will not resultin harmful side effects, assuming no otherdisorder or medication is contraindicated tothis suggested dose.

If you read the whole argument both sidespresent, neither side concludes that a singlefinding associates vitamin E dose with lifeending except in the one group of at-risk sub-jects. If further you examine vitamin E dosein food intake, it is remarkably lacking in theAmerican diet.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Dr. Bill recently emailedme with a list of 100 references (selected fromover 200 relevant studies) that may indicateevidence for vitamin E’s positive role inlongevity. We hope to have that list of 100 ref-erences on the E-CAPS web site soon.

D i e t a ry Supplements Safety Report and Is There an Outside Challenge From Codex Bill Misner, Ph.D.

Adverse affects from prescription drugs areamong the leading causes of death in theUnited States. Over 5% of all deaths in theU.S. can be attributed to prescription drugs.Food causes 0.24% of the deaths, whiledietary supplement use is implicated in0.0001%. For every person that dies from adietary supplement reaction, 417 will diefrom eating foods, and 50,000 will die from areaction to prescription drugs. It stands thathuman reactions to over-the-counter foodsand prescription medications present a realand present danger to human lifespan.

Food intake alone does not meet humannutritional needs to prevent deficiency dis-ease disorders, even at the minimal RDI(Reference Daily Intake) levels. From a ran-dom selection of 10 men’s and 10 women’sdietary analyses for 10 vitamins and 7 min-erals from food intake alone, micronutrientswere determined to be 40.5% deficient basedon disease-preventative requirements. (Apaper on this study has been accepted afterreview and is scheduled for publication in theApril 2005 issue of the Townsend Letter ForDoctors and Patients.) With exerciseexpense, water soluble and fat-solublemicronutrient requirements increase.Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to con-sume enough calories to meet micronutrientdemands without adversely increasing bodymass index. Dietary supplementation is therational choice, but that choice may be inquestion if foreign interests are given con-sent to overrule current American law.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission(Codex) is evaluating micronutrients todetermine what potencies are “safe” forhumans. Their objective is to establish maxi-mum upper limit potencies to guardconsumers worldwide against the so-calledrisks of vitamins. It seems to me that indi-vidual countries should determine their ownrisk associations by utilizing experts selectedfrom nutritional and biological sciences.

CODEX is seeking to set maximum upperlimits for vitamin-mineral products, eventhough supplements used by their citizenshave not demonstrated a health risk. Thislimitation does not account for depletion lossof nutrients by prolonged endurance exer-cise. CODEX will restrict the potencies tolevels so low that virtually no health benefitwill occur. The numbers of milligrams are tobe determined by governmental agents, not

necessarily professionals, to minimum levelsfor sedentary subjects. Potencies needed toachieve optimal health in those of us whoexercise 2-12 hours per day is NOT the con-cern of CODEX, nor are responsiblealternative medicine professionals an influ-ential part of their advisory process.

Voluminous data has been submitted to theCODEX commission to document benefitsthat certain nutrients provide. TWO STEPS RECOMMENDED

#1 Write, call, or e-mail your state’s senatorsand congressmen to OPPOSE S.722, theDietary Supplement Safety Act, and tell yourcongressmen to oppose H.R. 3377, theDietary Supplement Access and AwarenessAct. These two bills put the wheels in motionfor restrictions similar to those outlined inthe EU Directive international code of stan-dards to become U.S. law.

The health care freedom we presently enjoyin the USA was established by the 1994“DSHEA” American law.

#2 Tell your U.S. senators and congressmento SUPPORT U.S. Rep. Ron Paul’s H.R.1146, the American Sovereignty RestorationAct. This legislation establishes theConstitution of the United States as thesupreme law-making and judging power toour elected representatives and Americancourts, respectively.

Endurance News Goes Electronic : Inbox Or Mailbox, It’s Your ChoiceIt only took us 43 issues over the course of 12years, but I am pleased to announce that wecan now offer you Endurance News as anHTML e-mail newsletter. Co-produced byour talented graphic artist Angela Nock andweb wizard Mandy Hallos, you can be surethat your electronic version will be just asreadable as our printed version.

If you are wondering why you should sign upto receive Endurance News electronically, letme give you a couple of compelling reasons. The first is consistency. You may havenoticed that even though we publish quar-terly, sometimes you get one and sometimesyou don’t. This is because the size of ourclient base has become so large that we canonly mail to those of you who have orderedwithin the past four months. We used to goback an entire year, but due to ever escalat-ing printing and postage costs and theaforementioned size of our mailing list, we’vehad to cut back.

Of course we wouldn’t mind if you made apoint of ordering every 120 days or so, butwe don’t expect you to just so you canreceive every issue of Endurance News, especially with an increasing number ofyou buying our Hammer products fromyour local retailer. So, you can be sure toget all the news in every issue by subscrib-ing to the e-version. If you prefer to readon paper instead of the computer screen, each issue will have a “printer friendly”button that will allow you to print out yourcopy to read and pass along to friends.

The second reason is our desire to conservenatural resources in all that we do. 15,000issues at 12 to 16 pages each means a lot ofpaper, and that means a lot of trees. If even50% of you sign up to receive EN electroni-cally, we’ll be able to save a lot of trees.

Of course, we save money when we send anissue electronically instead of mailing a

To ny Schiller : Ten Sure-fire Steps You Can Take Now to Launch a Great Season

for the BETTER!iFLORA Has Changed...

Sedona Labs, the makers of the iFlora pro-biotic supplement, recently informed us ofsome changes to the product:

Easier to Read LabeliFlora’s previous label indicated that theproduct has 30 billion cells per GRAM,which means each 500mg CAPSULE had15 billion cells. This could confuse manyAmerican consumers who aren’t familiarwith the metric system. The label has beenchanged to indicate that each capsule has15 billion cells - as it always has. Thepotency is still the same.

Less FillerSedona Labs has reduced the amount offiller by nearly half, thus reducing theoverall capsule from 500mg to 260mg.

Smaller, Easier to Swallow CapsuleBy reducing the amount of filler, SedonaLabs has made a smaller, easier to swallowcapsule-with the same potency.

Yes, it’s the coldest month of the year, but thedays are getting longer, and before you knowit, the spring and summer racing season willbe upon us. So take some time now to con-sider these ten tips for turning 2005 into agreat season of racing.

1. Think Back - Review the first 90-120days of seasons when you raced exceptional-ly well, and identify the elements that madeyou deserving. Repeat them this year. Hereare some questions to prompt your process:

- What was your level of passion?- How excited were you for the season?- What was the motivation driving your

success?- Did you have specific goals in mind? - Did you have them written down?- Were you training alone or with a

partner/group?- What were your training frequencies and

volumes?- Did you incorporate weight training or

alternative training?- Did you do winter racing (same or other

sports)?- Which of your attributes from that season

stand out as special?

2. Look to the Classics for Inspiration -If your video library doesn’t include the 1989Tour de France and Hawaii Ironman races, get them now. And if you do own them, I’ll betit’s been a decade since you last viewed themfor a supercharged workout. Either way, it’snever been easier to find motivation in videofrom the ‘80’s classics. I prefer the 6-packs ofL a n c e ’s conquests to the state-of-the-arttraining DVDs now available. And if theworkout room needs a DVD player, you cannow pick one up for under $30, or aDVD/VCR combo deck for $79.

3. Become a Student of Your Craft - Knowwhat you don’t know and seek to change it.Start by simply identifying one conceptyou’ve never fully comprehended. Just one.Name it and commit to a study plan to mas-ter that element or concept. Then apply yournewfound knowledge to your routine orapproach. It’s really that easy.

4. Get Rejuvenated by Re-mastering OldSkills - Sameness is the kiss of death. Sodecide on a skill or technique you feel excep-tionally competent in and pretend you’relearning it now for the very first time. Seekto find the freshest ideas and thinking avail-able on the skill. Google™ it. Then have funpracticing and applying the latest concepts to

bring your skill to an entirely new and high-er level.

5. Be Honest with Yourself - Here’s a quickquiz. If you were competing against yourself, what weakness would you attempt to attackor exploit for a competitive advantage? In myworkshops, I often ask attendees that ques-tion with the instruction to raise their handwhen they’ve got the plan, and always handsshoot straight up. The point is that we tendto know our weaknesses all too well. Butdoing something about it is another matter. How about you? Are you truly willing tocourageously act to eliminate your biggestweakness? If so, what is your plan?

6. Shave Your Legs (metaphorically speak-ing) - Let go of ego-driven stubbornness toreinvent the wheel. While some rituals orbehaviors might seem insignificant on thesurface, there’s a profound power and sym-bolism gained from adopting the “bestpractices” of forward-thinking past and pres-ent champions in your sport.

7. Winning Costs Money . . . - Why shouldracing be different than anything else in life?Adopt the belief system that you’re alwayson the lookout for smart ways to invest togain a competitive advantage. Refuse to losebecause of inferior equipment. Refuel withthe finest (legal) sports nutrition. Make per-formance treatments, massage, and injuryrehabilitation a part of your routine. Travelto competitions that bring out your fullpotential.

8. . . . But Victory Cannot be Bought -Contradiction? Not really. The way we investin and take care of ourselves and our equip-ment reflects the pride we put into theendurance lifestyle. It sets a tone of profes-sionalism that leads to performing our best. But we know that our success ultimatelycomes down to what’s inside.

9. Become a Fan of History - Can you tellthe stories of the epic battles in your sport?More than just great entertainment, we canlearn much from learning how the championsof the past won, often due less to science andtechnology and more to superior grit, desire, and true mastery of skill and technique.

10. Bad News, Good News - First, the badnews... if you’ve read this far you’ve provenyou’re an over-the-top-endurance-obsessed-junky (join the club - it takes one to knowone). The good news: this makes you among

the fittest people in the world, plus you havethat single-minded focus that defines yourstrength. So honor that strength, but alsochallenge yourself to have more balanceaway from the sport. Grow a few friendshipswith those from “the other side.” You’ll feelf r e s h e r, perform better, and maybe eveninspire a cp (couch potato) to make a whole-sale lifestyle change.

Have a great year!

January 2005 : Issue 045

When devising a training plan for theupcoming year, whether you do it yourself orhave a coach outline it for you, consistency inyour training is key.

Skipping workouts, however infrequent itmight seem, will hamper your progress andinstill a sense of guilt. How many times dowe think, “I should have done _____ today.”Even if we don’t have the time, the thoughtof a missed workout eats at us until our nextopportunity to sweat.

And if you do find yourself skipping work-outs frequently, then it might be time torethink your plan. Maybe you’re schedulingtoo many hours or workouts during yourweek. When I ask my athletes to figure outhow many hours, maximum, they have eachweek to train, I tell them to subtract 20-25%from that figure to come up with a realistictraining budget. That 20-25% deductionallows for those “unforeseens” that take up

our time but we can’t really put our fingerson. For example, I didn’t work out todaybecause I spent a lot of time taking down andputting away holiday decorations. I decidedto keep the day low stress rather than addanother “to do” to the list.

The holidays are behind us and it’s time tostart focusing on the new season. The moreconsistent you can be, and the more stressyou can remove from your training schedule, the more progress you’ll make and the morefun you’ll have.

Honoring A Fellow Cyclist : The Larry Schwartz Year-Rounder Century ChallengeJohn Hughes of theUltra Marathon CyclingAssociation (UMCA)recently informed us ofthis new cycling chal-lenge. The Year-Rounderhonors Larry Schwartz,

who won the UMCA Mileage Challenge in2001, was second in 2002, and was leading in2003 when he was struck and killed by aschool bus. For a profile of Schwartz, go to: w w w. u l t r a c y c l i n g . c o m / a b o u t / h o f _ s c h w a r t z . h t m l

Hughes writes, “Club centuries are the high-light of many endurance riders’ seasons: thefun of a day on the bike with friends and thechallenge of riding 100 miles. And, at leastfor the day, an unrestricted diet!

The Year-Rounder is for century riders look-ing for a new challenge: consistentperformance throughout the year! Can youride a century (or longer) every month of theyear? You can maintain your fitness andhave more fun cycling. If you reach the goal,we’ll award you a Year-Rounder medal.

The Ye a r-Rounder is a division of the UMCAMileage Challenge. All you need to do is signup for the Mileage Challenge, and submit yourcenturies - we’ll do the rest. Centuries can be

either organized centuries or personal ridesthat you design yourself (explained below).

Although the goal is a century a month, itmight be too snowy or icy some months; sowe’ll allow two make-up rides. For example,if you get snowed out in January, just do twocenturies in February.

For routing reasons, some centuries are justunder 100 miles. In the Mileage Challenge aCentury is a ride of 90 - 149 miles.

You don’t have to ride alone - UMCA mem-bers lead HUB rides in many parts of thecountry. These are low-key rides - no t-shirts,no catered rest stops - just friends out for aday on the bike. To get started, sign up at: www.ultracy-cling.com/standings/umcform.html. Thenput on your wool jersey, head out the door, and we’ll do the rest. Mileage Challenge par-ticipants receive many benefits including ane-book Century Tips on training, nutrition, equipment and technique; an e-newsletter,sharing tips and stats; a bi-monthly YearRounder column by Crista Borras and ChuckWood, who ride centuries every weekend; a

section at www.ultracycling.com devoted tothe best century stories sent in by riders.

Rules Summary:An “Organized” century is a ride with: aname, designated start/finish location andstarting time(s), route plan, organizer, andadvance publication of the ride or ride seriesin club newsletters, etc.

A “Personal” century is a personally designedride. For credit, you must complete at least90 miles in a 12-hour period including off thebike time (and maintain an 8.33 mph aver-age after that). Personal centuries providecentury-length riding opportunities for rid-ers in seasons or locales where Organizedcenturies are sparse.

Any Mileage Challenge ride counts in theYear Rounder-brevets, double centuries andultra events.

We like to keep the holidays free for time withthe family, so the Mileage Challenge and Ye a rRounder will end on December 22, 2005.”

Welcome to our first Endurance News of2005! All of us here at E-CAPS/HammerNutrition want to wish you a healthy, happy, and successful year. I don’t know about you,but I always get super-psyched during thefirst part of the year, primarily because Ithink of it as being a great time to make afresh start for myself, learning from bothsuccesses and mistakes of the past, in thehopes of improving myself as a person aswell as an athlete.

With that in mind, please know that we’rehere for you, ready to assist you in achievingyour athletic/health goals for the upcomingyear. This issue of Endurance News is loadedwith useful and interesting articles, sugges-tions, and new product info (definitely checkout the articles about the new Xobaline for-mula and the Carlson’s Norwegian Fish Oilproduct!). Also be sure to read Tony Schiller’sarticle, “Ten Sure-Fire Steps You Can TakeNow to Launch a Great Season,” which pro-vides some great tips for you to consider.

The beginning of the New Year also gets meamped because I start thinking about whichevents I’ll get to attend during the upcomingyear. Being at events, though it is technical-ly “work,” has always been really fun for me.The reason is that I get to meet you athletes(putting faces to names is always great) andof course to help “spread the word” in personabout E-CAPS/Hammer Nutrition products.

2004 Furnace Creek 508

Due to the Endurance News printing sched-ule, it’s only now that I get to tell you aboutmy favorite race of all, the Furnace Creek 508Ultra Cycling Race. Once again, race directorChris Kostman (who we profiled in the lastissue of Endurance News) put on a magnifi-cent race and this year's edition of The 508was the largest ever, with 117 entrants com-peting in either the solo or team races. It wasalso one of the toughest years for the race interms of weather conditions, as tremendous-ly strong winds (we’re talking desert windshere) battered the field for much of the race, causing one of the highest dropout rates inthe history of the race. Only 31 of 59 (52%) ofthe solo riders rolled the full 508.

Seemingly impervious to the already-diffi-cult course and the unusually harshconditions, was E-CAPS/Hammer Nutritionsponsored rider Marko Baloh of Slovenia.Marko simply crushed the field and thecourse, taking the early lead and extendingit throughout the race, finishing in an amaz-ing time of 29:26:25, over four hours ahead ofthe second place finisher. Finishing this raceat all is a major accomplishment, finishing itin a fast time is never easy, but going sub-30in those conditions is downright eye-opening.I have worked with Marko on his supple-ment/fueling program the past couple ofseasons, and he used several E-CAPS sup-plements and Hammer Nutrition fuelsduring the race. Needless to say, they workedincredibly well, as expected. CongratulationsMarko on a superb effort!

Race results and other news and informationabout this year’s and previous Furnace

Creek 508s are posted at www.the508.com.

Product Spotlight : Xobaline Steve Born

Improved RNA synthesis = enhanced mus-cle tissue regeneration & better recovery

What’s the big news with Xobaline? A potentnew formula and a more efficient deliveryformat, that’s what! Gone are both the liq-uid and encapsulated formulas. NowXobaline comes in small, sublingual (underthe tongue) tablets, available in 30 and 90count bottles. More importantly, the newXobaline formula now consists of vitaminB12 in the methylcobalamin form, the mostbiologically active form available, and folicacid. After much research, we’re absolutelyconvinced that this dual nutrient combina-tion presents several significant advantagesover the original B12 only formula, especial-ly in regards to recovery. We know you’llagree! One tiny tablet dissolved under thetongue after your workouts goes a long waytowards enhancing the recovery process.

RNA - An endurance essential

RNA is a long-chain nucleic acid composed oflinked nucleotides, the building blocks for allcellular reproduction. Science suggests thatimproving RNA “status” within the body

results in, among other benefits, gains inboth lean muscle mass and mitochondrialresynthesis. When this occurs, the athletemay expect increases in energy capacity, metabolism, and enhanced recovery afterexercise.

Folic acid & vitamin B12 - Necessaryand inseparable nutrient partners

Both folic acid and vitamin B12have key roles in the manufactur-ing and resynthesis of RNA,which, as mentioned earlier, iscrucial for the regeneration oflean muscle mass. Folic acid, when ingested, is converted tofolinic acid, the required co-factorfor the resynthesis of RNA. Inaddition, folic acid plays an impor-tant role in the lowering ofhomocysteine, elevated levels ofwhich are believed to be a primaryculprit in various cardiovasculardiseases. Lastly, folic acid is arequired substance for the synthesis of theiron-carrying heme component of the hemo-globin in red blood cells.

Vitamin B12 is an essential co-factor for theconversion of folic acid to its metabolicallyactive form and, like folic acid, plays animportant role in the reduction of elevatedhomocysteine levels. B12 improves themetabolism of carbohydrates and fats, whichof course plays a role in energy production.B12 is known to alleviate the tiredness asso-ciated with fatigue and is required for the

formation of red blood cells.

In order for these two vitaminsto provide maximal benefits, they need to be taken together.Dr. Bill Misner writes, “Folate[folic acid] & B12 must betogether for gains hoped for inRBC [Red Blood Cells], homo-cysteine methylation, cardiovascular effects, anddownstream DNA strand syn-thesis.” With the newlyformulated Xobaline formulayou get both folic acid and B12in an ideal 4:1 ratio.

The new and improved Xobaline - the cata-lyst for increased aerobic capacity andsuperior recovery!

J: Wh at Hammer and E-CAPS prod-ucts do you use and how have theyhelped you?

P : When jumping I take Ti s s u eRejuvenator for the knee, I also use Race

Caps Supreme,P e r p e t u e m ,HEED, andRecoverite formy regularworkouts. Forcycling I useRace CapsS u p r e m e ,E n d u r o l y t e s ,P e r p e t u e m ,HEED andRecoverite. A l lof these prod-ucts are topnotch additionsto my dailydiet and haveallowed me toperform wayabove the lev-els I was beforeI started usingt h e m .

J: We understand you are using theCompex like Hermann Maier. What ben-efits have you seen and what goals areyou trying to achieve with this product?

P: I have just started using the Compex, butmy muscle tone seems to be advancing veryrapidly. I have not jumped since starting, butI have been doing some ski race training andI feel really strong. My goal is to add powerto my jumping in an effort to break theGelande World Record (only 16 feet to go, notvery far at 65 mph). E-CAPS and HammerNutrition products are without a doubt thebest products of this kind on the market. AsI stated above, I would not be able to performat the level I am now without them.

J : We heard you were invited to skion the 1988 Olympic team in Calgary. How did they get your name andwhat happened that you weren't ableto compete?

P: In January of 1988I raced in the BritishM i l i t a r yChampionships, theyinvite all of theN ATO countries, andall of Europe hasmandatory service,so some of the coun-tries send some oftheir best skiers tothese events. I placed4th in the GiantSlalom and 7th in theDownhill. There werea few guys in the racefrom France andGermany that werealready headed to theOlympics, so I turneda few heads. A f r i e n dof mine knew one ofthe US team coachesand knew that wewere having trouble

finding guysthat could com-pete at thatlevel. So after afew phone callsit was decidedthat I might beput on theteam. BecauseI did not havean internation-al license (FIS)the decisionmakers figuredthat we couldnot get me onein time for theGames. Ti m i n gis everything.

J: Have you had many injuries partici-pating in your chosen sports?

P: Yes, 2 knee surgeries, 2 AC shoulder sep-arations, 1 MCL knee injury, 1 ripped quadmuscle, and several minor things like roadr a s h.

This issues’Athlete Spotlight is closely related tothe goings-on here at E-CAPS/HammerNutrition. Pat Arnone is the kid brother of ourvery own Joe Arnone. Recently Joe took sometime to talk with Pat about his career, his goals, and where he’s headed next. Enjoy.

Joe: You are featured on the cover of our2005 Winter catalog. Can you tell usabout the photo, what you are doingand what possesses you to do this?

Pat: The picture was taken in SteamboatSprings during the 2004 Alpine Ski FlyingChampionships, I went 343 feet, my person-al best. We jump on regular alpine ski racingequipment, long skis 223 cm, but regularboots and downhill speed suits, betterknown as Gelandesprung or Gelande. I havealways loved catch-ing air, bmx, skateboards, andespecially skiing. When I moved toSteamboat, I final-ly got theopportunity to trythe nordic stylejumps, there isnothing like it.The further you flythe more fun.

J: Whatbrought you tothis point inyour athleticcareer andwhat othersports have you or do you still participate in?

P: I was and am an alpine ski racer andraced in high school, in Europe in FIS races, and then in college before moving toSteamboat. I have and still race road bikesand do a little nordic skate skiing.

Chris Sadowski : An Iron ManIf you watched the telecast of the 2004Ironman Hawaii, you probably saw the cover-age of an athlete who had to walk the lastseveral miles of the bike course after beingaccidentally hit by one of the official motor-bikes. In a show of tremendous courage andfortitude, this athlete kept his focus on the goalof finishing, despite the catastrophe that hadjust befallen him. The athlete? ChrisSadowski, one of our valuedclients. We have his own reportof this remarkable example ofeffort, focus, and courage toshare with you.

Chris wrote, “I have to hand itto your company for productsthat really work. Without themI would have not been able todo the 2-1/2 hour walk at 2PMwith no water. Like the belowarticle states, I was preparedfor a grueling marathon andwas completely hydrated priorto the crash. I have followedevery guideline that your com-pany offered and then I tookmore of both the Endurolytesand Perpeteum (so much sothat my intestines hurt).During the bike portion I had a 5-hour bottleof Perpeteum with me. And, I prepared astrong squeeze bottle (the small Hammer Gelplastic hand held) of Heed for the marathon. At some points, I was taking two Endurolytetablets an hour. It all worked like a charm. Ionly took water, soup, bananas and fig new-tons from the aid stations. I stayed away fromthe Gatorade and Coke. I had previously usedthis method for Ironman Switzerland (11 : 0 5 )in July of this year.

Congratulations Chris on a truly heroic effort!

Below is his account of the bizarre accidentand his complete dedication to finishingthe race.

I had trained for an extremely hard race, butnever expected that while I was thinkingabout how bad my toes were hurting fromstomping my pedals against the wind, that Iwould have been hit from behind by a motor-cycle. I was also trying to pay attention to theupcoming “Energy Lab” intersection. Therewere a lot of people, cars and cones near thebike course. I remember making a 6” movefrom the right of the white line to the left ofthe white line to avoid hitting some of the

upcoming staggered cones and pedestrians inthe shoulder. I then remember hearing tiressquealing before the impact. It was a hugeforce that struck the rear of my bike.Immediately I thought it was another bikethat hit me and then a milli-second later, Ithought it was a car, and then a second later Ithought it was a semi because of how hard itthrew me from the bike.

While I was watching my feet fly up, I remem-bered thinking that this was really going tohurt once I made impact with the asphalt onmy back. The road-rash on my right butt, both forearms, both elbows and my rightthumb showed where all the impact occurred.I was lucky not to have hit my head. Themedics were in the area and immediatelyrushed over. I rolled over as they were doinga quick assessment. My left calf was dis-placed and I had to slap and massage it backinto place. Both my elbows were swollen. Myright thumb was numb. But as I looked upand over at my bike, all I could think aboutwas, “Kim (my wife) is going to kill me. Thereis no way I can explain this to her and the bikewas only 10 months old”.

The medics were still freaking out and want-ed to put me on a spine board and tape me uplike a mummy. After their initial exam waso v e r, I had to tell them all to settle down andtell me my options. If they would have helpedme, I would have been DQ’d. My rear tire wasdestroyed and my carbon Giant TCR Zeroframe was cracked at the rear diagonal. Thebike techs were there and trying to put on anew tire, but the frame wouldn’t accept it. I

ENDURANCE NEWS : The Newsletter For Endurance A t h l e t e s

had two options, but quitting the race was notgoing to be one of them. So, my only optionwas to pick up the bike and walk it in.

I never really thought that what I was doingwas ‘unheard of ’ or ‘crazy’. Even the headmarshal told me to ‘stop being a martyr andput on these shoes’. He wanted me to use hisshoes to finish the walk. I wouldn’t have

dreamed of taking outside assis-tance and later be DQ’d. Theunderlying rule of this event, as wellas all tri’s, is that you do it on yourown. Period. I’ve had enough of avariety of endurance training tounderstand that you have to beready for anything that will comeyour way. Sometimes you just haveto wipe the blood off, swallow youranger and just continue. This wasjust another one of those obstaclesto overcome. My anger subsidedonce I started concentrating onwalking as effortlessly as possible toavoid tearing my socks. I had toldmy wife the day before that this racewas ‘special’ and that I would finishit at all costs, no matter if thatmeant crawling across the finishline. I just knew that I had to finish

the bike portion so that I could relax duringthe marathon. I’ve been a runner for about 15years, and for some reason, I wasn’t reallyworried about this marathon. I kept thinkingthat it couldn’t be any worse than the 48-mileultramarathons I do in Switzerland (I’ve doneit 8 times). Little did I know that it was goingto be a tough run.

It was a long 2-1/2 hour walk with the bike onmy shoulder and, amazingly, my bike socksd i d n ’t have any holes afterward. It’s a goodthing that I fully hydrated in anticipation of agrueling marathon because I went withoutwater the entire 7-mile walk and barely madethe bike cut-off time. Once I finished the walkand started the marathon, my heels, left calfand rear hurt extremely bad. My anklesswelled up too. I had to alternate betweenrunning and walking and was afraid that Iw o u l d n ’t make the 17-hour finish mark. TheNBC cameras wouldn’t leave me alone. NowI know what it feels like to be a pro on film.

I distinctly remember that mentally I had areally tough time slowing down and walkingduring this championship race. I had

The 1996 Olympic mountain bike course inConyers, Georgia was the scene of the latest24 Hours of Adrenalin mountain bike race. The 8.5-mile course was challenging and fun, with short steep climbs, a load of slick rock, and not a moment to rest. The weather wasdarn near perfect, sunny and 70 degrees, and50 and dark at night. I led the race from startto finish, completing a course record 25 lapsbefore high noon Sunday. Edward O’Dea andJimmy McMillan (last year’s solo winner)battled back and forth for 2nd place through-out the race, finishing with 23 and 22 lapsr e s p e c t i v e l y. The field of solo and team riderswas 800 strong. With pit crews and specta-tors, more than 1000 people filled the grassyGeorgia International Horse Park.

trained my butt off (and now I had actuallyleft some of it at Energy Lab on the asphalt!)and didn’t want a weak finish. So, instead ofjust walking the entire 26.2, I pushed myself. But my heels were toast, my ankles hurt likehell, and for some reason my right butt feltlike it was going in a different direction. Ialso had shooting pains in my left calf, andmy knees starting hurting. However, I wasgoing to move (however pitiful it looked) asfast as I could.

My adrenaline was so high that I sprintedthe final quarter-mile and almost fell overright on the timing mat. For the past tenyears, I have finished every race with asprint. The ‘Sadowski Sprint’ will be my sig-nature until I cannot race again. A n d ,especially for this race, I wasn’t going toslack off and just jog it in.

I felt a certain form of closure and comfortonce I saw myself finishing on the big screen. The day was over and I had made it in under17 hours. I was able to overcome the obstacle.People like Wendy Ingraham, Rob Hylandwith NBC, the bike tech gurus, the medics, the racers who said, “‘finish so we can buy youa beer” and the one referee who constantlychecked up on me during my long walk mademy ordeal so much easier. It was a humblingexperience for me, but now I know that mylevel of pain tolerance and task concentrationhas intensified over the years instead ofbecoming dull. I can honestly say that thisexperience has made me a stronger racerinstead of turning me away from racing.

I was so tired after I finished the race that Id i d n ’t have the energy to stick around the fin-ish area, or to sit down somewhere nearbyand drink a beer (that means I was deathlytired). Plus, the road rash on my rear pre-

vented me from sitting. I am recovering withno broken bones, but a lot of scrapes. I can, ofcourse, drink beer now. It’s helping.

It was an ‘official’ Ironman motorcycle thatr e a r-ended me at mile 105 of the 112 bike leg.The ‘official’ driver was carrying a red-shirted‘ v o l u n t e e r’ that was observing the bike courseat the time (it was his daughter). They weredone for the day, but decided to continue ontheir own and do some spectating.E s s e n t i a l l y, they were trespassing on thecourse. A bicyclist behind me said that theywere traveling extremely fast. I guess theywanted to outrun the pack of cyclists behindme to make a right turn into Energy Lab tosee the pros, who where running already.

Hopefully I can do the race without incidentnext year. However, next time I will be attach-ing two spare wheels and a spare frame to mybike in case I’m as unlucky again.

Just had a phenomenal race in Brazil in the nutritional context. BLAZING exposed humid heat, sweating like you can’t imagine. Four days around the clock, virtually no sleep. Karen and I feltinvincible... and Ted, the new E-CAPS kid on our squad. This was the most switched on we’veever been on fuel. Around the clock (as in 60 hours no sleep, and HARD navigation) and men-tal alertness was ON. E-Caps/Hammer is unreal.

Team Epi/SOLE Shines AgainPaul Romero, Karen Lundgren and teammates

I want to update you on my latest accomplishment. Last weekend I competed at this event, theWorld 24-hour championship in Brno, Czech Republic, as a member of the American team. I fin-ished 11th overall with a personal best 144.02 miles. I also qualified for the 2005 team, whichwill compete in Worschach, Austria in July. Thanks for the continued support.

- Scott Eppelman

Eppelman is THE MAN!Scott Eppelman

After Switzerland, I decided not to race many short local races and focus purely on Kona thisyear. At the end of August I did one Olympic triathlon in Houston (Cinco Tri). I won the raceoverall by 6 minutes. That gave me confidence that the speed is still there. On to Hawaii.Conditions were very tough this year. Early on I knew times would be much slower this year. Many athletes dropped out because of dehydration or gastric problems. I stuck with my planand during the entire race I did not have any gastric or energy problem.

I was able to finish in place 97 overall - first time I made it into the top 100. I was also able tofinish as the fastest Texas athlete again - not that it matters much, but we are talking about itdown here in Austin. Once again, I was very pleased and impressed with your products.

Math and Endurance News Jeff Henderson

Not long ago we received the following letterfrom Jeff Henderson. We liked it so much thatwe thought we’d pass it along to our readers.

Hi Steve,

Jeff Henderson here from the MusselmanTriathlon and the Triathlon Informer. I’mnot sure how much feedback you get on theEndurance Newsletter you send out, but Iwanted to share a story and my appreciationfor the work you put into that.

I got my newsletter two days ago in the mail, and I was reading it over dinner that night.By day I teach high school mathematics, soI’m always looking for things that the kid-dies might find interesting that involvesmath and does NOT involve their textbook.Lo and behold, I found it in your [Dr. Bill’s]front-page story about the dangers of a diethigh in simple sugars.

A month ago we had talked about correlation

coefficients in class, and I came across theending to that story that talked about inges-tion of simple sugars and itss t r o n g e r-than-cigarettes correlation withheart disease. I brought the article intoschool this morning and read it to my class-es, who curiously were able to remain quietand focused for the whole thing - this in itselfis a minor miracle.

After they stopped teasing me about read-ing something called the “EnduranceN e w s l e t t e r,” they actually began discussingthe findings. Back when I taught themabout correlation coefficients they hadabsolutely no interest in the subject, instead choosing to relegate it to the pile ofAll Things Useless that they are forced tolearn about in math class.

Unbelievably, one of my kids suggested writ-ing a letter to the Surgeon General askinghim to require warning labels on sugar pack-ets. He also wanted extra credit for it, but

that’s beside the point.

So anyways, thanks for producing somethingthat was not only interesting to myself, adevoted endurance junkie, but to my classesof hyperglycemic and attention-span-defi-cient high schoolers. That article may haveaffected more parts of their life today thanthe rest of my year teaching polynomials andother “nonsense.” :)

Keep up the good work. Thanks for beingsuch a standout company.

Kind regards,Jeff Henderson
