Product Performance and Reliability

MIL-STD-1316, Fuze Board-, and FESWG-compliant Building Block Designs

Excelitas ESAFs and FMs comply with MIL-STD-1316 and all other pertinent safety standards through the use of redundant safety circuitry and mechanisms to ensure that the detonator cannot accidentally initiate the explosive train. Our broad portfolio of Fuze Board-approved circuitry streamlines new product development and Fuze Board approval, while minimizing the cost and time associated with technology development and qualification.

Excelitas ESAFs include MIL-STD-1316-compliant arming delay timers constructed from dissimilar technologies, reducing the probability of common mode failures, and scalable to any safe separation distance required by the customer.

Excelitas designs ESAFs and FMs using both FESWG (Fuze Engineering Standardization Working Group)-compliant complex logic devices (microcontrollers and FPGAs) and discrete implementations. Complex logic devices provide ease of configurability, while discrete implementations maximize reliability and can reduce development time and costs.

Shock-Hardened and Miniaturized Designs

Excelitas has developed proprietary packaging techniques that are proven to protect the electronics during hard target penetration. We also produce the smallest, lightest ESAFs and FMs in the industry, taking thousands of pounds of force off of the warhead interface, substantially increasing the reliability of the weapon system, and freeing up space for more explosives in the warhead.

Excelitas ESAFs and FMs can be made with or without a tiny, on-board 22-channel shock hardened data recorder, our Informant™ Nano Recorder. The Informant™ Nano Recorder can be integrated into the ESAF or FM circuit card or can be a stand-alone version packaged inside the ESAF or FM housing during development testing. If the Informant™ Nano Recorder is integrated into the circuit card assembly of the ESAF or FM, it only consumes a few square millimeters of circuit board space.

The stand-alone version of the Informant™ is smaller than a postage stamp and is designed to fit inside existing ESAF or FM packaging.

MIL-DTL-23659 Qualified Blue Chip® Detonators

Excelitas manufactures many different types of detonators, allowing us to select the right device for varying environmental conditions. Options range from low-energy Blue Chip® detonators to dual-load and shock-hardened detonators. Excelitas recrystallizes, processes, and presses our own explosive powders, resulting in improved reliability and consistent performance for each energetic device.

ESAFs contain independent and

redundant safety circuitry to ensure

the weapon has reached a safe

separation distance before allowing

arming and firing of the warhead.

FMs do not contain safety circuitry

and are armed by an external Safe

and Arm (S & A) device. Using a

separate FM allows for a miniaturized

assembly, which reduces the shock

loads on the warhead, improves

hard target penetration, and eases

warhead design

About The Informant™

The Informant™ was designed

to overcome the challenges of

qualification testing and lengthy

failure analysis investigations for

hard target penetrating weapons.

Target Detection and Trigger Delay Timer

ESAFs and FMs detonate either immediately upon or at a specific time after target detection through a trigger delay timer. Excelitas has designed ESAFs and FMs incorporating detection signals from height of burst sensors, break wire, crush switch, g-switch, accelerometer, and many other target detection technologies. Excelitas has developed several methods for executing the trigger delay timer including a serial communications interface which is used to set, adjust, and read back the trigger delay duration, a fixed trigger delay, or selectable trigger delays based on the specific targets to be engaged.

Electrical Interface

Excelitas ESAFs and FMs utilize a wide range of electrical interfaces. Basic designs include connectors mounted on the surface of the package or external cables routed to the next subassembly.

Extensive In-House Test Capabilities

•Excelitashasextensivein-housecapabiltiesfortestingvibration, drop shock, thermal shock, humidity, extreme temperatures, and long-term aging. Our comprehensive environmental test facility ensures compliance to customer specifications and military standards.

•Mostofourproductsalsohaveadedicatedfactorytestconnector, which brings all significant signals out to Excelitas’ “Gen4” Test System, allowing every feature of the ESAF or FM to be rigorously tested.

•AllofourproductsemployExcelitas’patentedremovabledetonator feature, thus allowing an inert detonator to be installed during factory testing so that the ESAF or FM can be fully functioning during factory testing, including arming and firing.

•ThresholdtestingisperformedforeachExcelitasESAFandFMdesign to determine the precise voltage, capacitance and inductance required to provide reliable detonation. Excelitas has comprehensive explosive testing facilities and industry-recognized subject matter experts who utilize detonation margin testing and testing under “worst-case” conditions, ensuring that each ESAF and Firing Module design reliably initiates the explosive train.

Long-Term Storage and Reliability

Excelitas ESAFs and FMs are designed for long-term storage before use. Through years of fuze design and testing, Excelitas has developed proprietary methods of protecting electronics from potentially degrading exposure to heat, humidity, vibration, etc. Application-specific potting materials or conformal coatings are used to seal the electronics from the external environment and also provide mitigation against tin whisker growth.

Lot and Serialization Control

Many Excelitas safety devices contain an EEPROM that holds information about the serial number, manufacturing date, customer part number, etc. The ESAF or Firing Module can be queried at any time to retrieve this data.

What is the “Gen4” Electronics Test System?

Excelitas has developed and implemented

a fourth generation electronics test system

for ESAFs and ISDs. It can be used for

product development, factory testing,

and field testing.

Key benefits of Excelitas’ “Gen4” Test

System include: real-time tactical operation

of the unit under test; a common

hardware and software architecture

that can be applied to a wide variety of

ESAFs and ISDs to dramatically reduce

development time and costs; scalability

to fit program volume requirements;

and data storage via an SQL database

for quick retrieval and analysis.
