Nominate your local sporting heroes for an

Energize Award! Once again it’s time to nominate your local heroes for the county’s sports awards. Now

in its 9th year, the Energize Awards recognise the people who are currently taking part, working or volunteering in sport or physical activity in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.

The Energize Awards are run by Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin County Sports Partnership in conjunction with the Shropshire Star and are a fantastic opportunity for local people and organisations to be recognised and celebrated for their passion, dedication and commitment to sport and physical activity.

There are awards to celebrate top quality coaches, volunteers, community sports clubs, newcomers to sport, innovative sport and physical activity projects, and local employers who are supporting their workforce to be more active. Finally, one special person will be awarded the William Penny Brookes Trophy – the award for outstanding contribution to sport and physical activity given for exceptional dedication and commitment to community sport and helping more people to be active over a number of years.

The award categories this year are:

Coach of the Year

Volunteer of the Year

Young Volunteer of the Year (Sponsored by TTC Group)

Sports Performance of the Year (Sponsored by Telford College of Arts & Technology)

Junior Sports Performance of the Year (Sponsored by Teme Leisure)

Community Club of the Year (Sponsored by Shropshire Community Leisure Trust)

Energize Awards Continued…

Chris Child, Chief Executive for Energize STW said, “Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin are home to a number of very talented sports people who deserve recognition for their achievements. However, there is also excellent work happening behind the scenes to help people to be more active, regardless of their background or ability, and the Energize Awards are an opportunity to recognise and thank the people who are contributing to this as well.”

“We know that many of these deserving people are very modest and do not seek recognition, so we rely on the families, friends, colleagues, teachers and team mates to nominate.”

If you know people, teams, clubs, organisations or businesses that deserve to be recognised for their achievements or contributions to local sport, please nominate them for an Energize Award.

The deadline for nominations is 4pm on Friday 11th September and the Energize Awards 2015 will take place on Thursday 5th November at the Greenhous Meadow, home of Shrewsbury Town Football Club. This year’s special guest speaker will be World Cup winning former international rugby union footballer for England and the British and Irish Lions, Neil Back MBE. Neil is an ambassador for Rybrook, and Rybrook BMW Shrewsbury are pleased to have secured the services of Neil Back MBE for the 2015 Energize Awards.

To nominate, go to www.energizeawards.co.uk where you will find an online nomination form, as well as forms that can be downloaded and filled in by hand, or electronically. Alternatively you can call 01743 453495 or email [email protected] and the details will be sent to you.

Energize would like to thank all of this year’s sponsors. We still have two award categories available for sponsorship; Coach of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. If you would like details of how you could support either of these categories, please contact Tamsin Foster: [email protected] or call 01743 453496.

Shropshire Homes School Sport Summer Festival

On the 30th June and 1st July 2015 1,000 young people from across the County came together in soaring temperatures to compete in the Summer Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival, as part of Sainsbury’s School Games.

Participants came from 50 primary and 22 secondary schools, taking part in 21 events with sports including; dodgeball, archery, rounders, orienteering, golf, tennis, cricket, softball, new age kurling and cycling.

Energize – the County Sports Partnership for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin – were one of the main organisers of the games and Chris Child, chief executive, said: “We passionately believe there is an activity out there for everyone.

“Our aim is to help everyone find that activity that gets their heart beating faster – and the best time to start is when you are young. “We had a primary and secondary school day and trying new things is what it is all about. People need to be active every day so we need to try to find ways to encourage that.”

Shropshire Homes are sponsor of the Olympic style School Sport Festivals and keen supporters of competitive sport for young people.

In addition to the hundreds of participants, there were also over 90 outstanding young leaders, taking on the roles of team manager, officials and event managers. Their involvement and support during the two days are key to making the Festival run smoothly.

Also present to inspire participants were GB Paralympic archer Mel Clarke, GB Paralympic tandem cyclist Helen Scott, England high jumper Bethan Partridge and sponsored mountain sports athlete and adventurer Finn McCann.

The next Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival will be the Winter Festival in 2016.

Energize are Finalists at the Shropshire Business Awards

Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin were delighted to attend the Shropshire Business Awards 2015 after being short listed for an award in the Business in the Community category. The glittering 15th annual awards ceremony took place at Telford International Centre on Friday 26th July with over 640 people attending. The Business in the Community award recognises businesses which “put something back” into their local communities, and Energize is proud to have been short listed in this category for the second year running.
