 Ayurveda: Traditional Indian Medical System

Ayurveda, which means knowledge or science (Veda) of life( Ayur), is the ancient Indian medical system.

During the colonial period of India’s history when foreigninterests ruled, Ayurveda was outlawed & India westernized.

Recent years have seen India regains its cultural identity &

worldwide interest develop in Ayurveda. Classical Ayurvedic texts state that treating a patient

effectively involves treatment of that patient as a whole – i.e.treating their consciousness, mind, & body.

Ayurveda seeks to establish homeostasis within the patient.

The foundation of the balance is 3 organizing principalsknown as “doshas”. Disease is related to an imbalance in thedoshas.

Vata, Pitta, & Kapha are used to describe a dosha & body type.

 Vata Dosha - Motion

Vata is expressed in all motion, functionally associated withactivities of the locomotor system, circulation, & cellular transportfunctions.

Vata is of great importance in allhomeostatic mechanisms.

In the natural world, Vata isexpressed in wind  & in themovement  of water.

A combination of air (essenceof hearing) and space(essence of touch).

In the human body, the seats of Vata are the large intestine, pelviccavity, bones, skin, ears, & thighs.

Vata is considered the “lead”dosha because of its quality ofmobility or motion.

Pitta Dosha –  Energy Production

Pitta is the dosha that isexpressed in metabolicactivities & processesinvolving energy exchange.

Pitta is associated withglandular activities – hormone production &digestion.

In the natural world, Pittais expressed in sunshine &

 fire.

In the human body, theseats of Pitta are smallintestine, stomach, sweatglands, blood, skin, & eyes.

Kapha Dosha - Structure

This dosha governs thestructure & cohesion of theorganism.

Responsible for physicalstrength, tissue resilience, &proper body structure,

including cellular biochemicalorganization. In the natural world, Kapha is

expressed in solid structuralelements such as earth & rocks.

In the human body, the seats of

Kapha are chest, lungs, & thespinal fluid, which surroundsthe spinal cord.

The structures of bone, muscle,& fat are also associated withKapha.

 Ayurvedic Assessment or Diagnosis

Most people are a mixture of Dosha characteristicsor body types such as Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha.

Each person is unique and therefore has their own“constitution” which involves individual strengths

and weaknesses. The Ayurvedic assessment or diagnosis is used to

determine the patient’s type or constitution.

Ayurvedic Diagnostic techniques include detailedhistory taking, observation & palpation withparticular attention to the (12) pulses, tongue, eyes, nails, hair, skin, & urine.

 Ayurvedic Treatment

Once a diagnosis has been made, the AyurvedicTreatment  plan will typically include four treatmentmethods that are designed to bring balance orhomeostasis to the patient.

These four main treatment methods or forms areCleansing & Detoxification (Shodan), Palliation (Shaman), Rejuvenation (Rasayana) & Mental Hygiene /

 Spiritual Healing (Satvajaya).

The major modalities used to facilitate these methodsinclude the use of Diet, Herbs, Massage (primarily, withmedicated oils & ghee (a liquid butter), Sunlight,Exercise, Breathing, & Meditation.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

A written system for more than 4500 years

Has many aspects in common with other ancientsystem, Ayurvedia, the traditional medicine ofIndian

Nei Ching or Classic of Internal Medicine writtenabout 2500 BC & today is still the basic reference

Theories developed to explain all observed naturalphenomena

TCM anatomical, physiological, and pathologicalhypotheses have been developed without the benefitof dissection or other modern analytical tools

Page 15: Energy Anatomy F

TCM

In TCM, health is viewed as an expression of a balance – homeostasis – of all forces acting on & within the body

Disease is viewed as a disruption of that balance

Basic to the system is the concept of Qi or Chi(the natural energy of the universe) thatcirculates throughout the body

Concepts of Yin and Yang first referenced in the Book of

Changes (700 BC) System also includes 5 Element Theory (300 BC) which

represents different qualities of all natural phenomenon

 Yin & Yang

Yin/yang are opposites ofthe same phenomenon

Life force or chi contains both yin & yang

Yin and yang represent a balance of complementaryforces.

When balanced, body, mind, and spirit arehealthy.

When out of sync, stresson entire system results insymptoms.

 Yin Meridians

Yin meridians are considered “female” andhave a “negative” charge.

Functions draw energy of substance and

nurturing in and restore or reproduceLocated on the inside soft areas of the body and

flow from the feet up in Chinese anatomicposition

Associated with parasympathetic ANS responsesand functions of the solid organs essential to life

 Yang Meridians

Yang meridians are considered “male” witha “positive” charge.

Energy of transformation and transportation isexpended in short bursts and moves out from the

bodyFlow downward, on the backs of the arms and

legs

Associated with sympathetic ANS responses andhollow organs, whose functions are supportive, but not essential, to life
