Dr Alan Finkel AO
Australia’s Chief Scientist and Chair of the COAG

Dr Finkel commenced as Australia’s Chief Scientist on 25 January 2016. He is
Australia’s eighth Chief Scientist. Prior to his appointment, he served as
President of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE), and
for eight years as Chancellor of Monash University.
As Chief Scientist, Dr Finkel has led a number of national reviews, delivering the
2016 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap, the 2017 Review into the
National Electricity Market and the 2018 STEM Industry Partnership Forum
report. He serves as the Deputy Chair of Innovation and Science Australia.
Dr Finkel has an extensive science background as an entrepreneur, engineer,
neuroscientist and educator. He was awarded his PhD in electrical engineering
from Monash University and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in
neuroscience at the Australian National University.
In 1983 he founded Axon Instruments, a California-based, ASX-listed company
that made precision scientific instruments used at pharmaceutical companies
and universities for the discovery of new medicines. After Axon was sold in 2004,
Dr Finkel became a director of the acquiring company, NASDAQ-listed Molecular
Devices.
A winner of the Clunies Ross Award for facilitating international neuroscience
research, Dr Finkel is committed to science education. He co-founded Cosmos
Magazine, and established the Australian Course in Advanced Neuroscience to
train early career neuroscientists. At ATSE, he led the development and
implementation of the STELR program for secondary school science, which has
been adopted in more than 600 Australian schools. As Chief Scientist he has led
the development of the STARportal information web site for extracurricular
STEM activities.
Dr Finkel was the 2016 Victorian of the Year, and received the 2015 IET
Mountbatten Medal (UK) and the 2019 IEEE Joseph F. Keithley Award in
recognition of his work in advancing the field of scientific instrumentation.

As General Manager, Hydrogen, Felicity Underhill is currently investigating how
hydrogen might best fit within Origin’s, and Australia’s, future energy mix. Felicity
has a history of successfully designing and then implementing strategies
including operating models, digital, innovation and new business ventures.
Felicity has spent the last two decades in the upstream energy industry, in
Australia with Origin, and previously globally with Shell, during which time she
worked in over 25 countries. As a New Zealander, she is carefully planning her
schedule over the coming months so as not to miss a single World Cup game>

Ben Wilson is Chief Executive Officer of Australian Gas Infrastructure Group,
which comprises Dampier Bunbury Pipeline, Dampier Development Group,
Multinet Gas, and Australian Gas Networks.
Previously, Ben was the Director of Strategy and Regulation and Chief Financial
Officer at UK Power Networks (UKPN), a large electricity distribution company in
the UK with 8 million customers.

Jeff Connolly is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens in the Australia
Pacific re-gion.
Siemens has been active in Australia since 1872, has a turnover of > A$2 billion
and employs over 2,200 people. A technology-agnostic company, Siemens is
one of the world’s largest pro-ducers of energy-efficient and resource-saving
technologies. They’re a leading supplier of sys-tems for power generation and
transmission and a pioneer in smart infrastructure solutions – from wind farms
to LNG, coal fired power stations, microgrids and distributed energy systems
and even ‘green’ hydrogen production. One interesting statistic is that about 30
per cent of Aus-tralia’s capacity to generate electricity is enabled by Siemens
technology.
With 380,000 employees worldwide, Siemens is the leader in industrial software,
automation and electrification technologies.
In addition to leading Siemens in the region, Jeff Connolly is instrumental in areas

Research and policy
CEDA’s only agenda is to pursue good public policy to progress Australia’s
economic and social development. Since 1960 CEDA has produced more than
3000 publications, research reports and articles highlighting emerging issues and
directions in a diverse range of policy areas. Research in 2019 will focus on
Australia’s long-term budget position, the effects of temporary migration, a survey
of Australian businesses on their approach to economic development, and new
approaches to addressing entrenched disadvantage.
