Using energy at homePart A: The shower challenge Use the chart and instructions below to record the time you spent taking a shower on four

different days.

For Shower 1, use a timing device such as a stopwatch or cellphone to time your shower.

Start the timer when you enter the shower and stop the timer when you shut off the water

and get out of the shower.

For Shower 2, use a timing device like shower 1, but also use the Shower Timer inside the

shower to see when you reach 5 minutes.

For Shower 3, use a timing device and the Shower Timer like shower 2, and try to end your

shower before the timer runs out!

For Shower 4, use the timing device only, like shower 1 (no Shower Timer).

How is energy used at home?We use energy in many different ways at home. Below is a pie chart showing how much

energy is used for heating, hot water, appliances and electronics, lighting and cooling.

Easy ways to conserve energy at home

Write the correct number from the picture above for each of the energy effcient tips below.

a. Run the dishwasher only when it’s full

b. Install a low-flow shower head

Easy ways to conserve energy at homeThere’s a bunch of ways you and your family can conserve energy at home. See how many

of these energy-saving tips you can do.

Conserve heat• Don’t turn up the heat, wear a sweater instead.

• Install a programmable thermostat.

• Use a door sock to keep the heat in your home.

• Make sure the furnace filter is changed every three to six months.

Conserve water• Run the dishwasher only when it’s full.

• Take short showers instead of baths.

• Install water-efficient faucets.

• Wash full loads of laundry in cold water.

Conserve energy• Use CFL or LED lights.

• Turn off the lights when leaving a room.

• Clean the lint trap of your dryer so it works efficiently.

• Turn off electronics when not in use, like your computer
