The United States presents a dynamic pavilion that showcases America’s unique role in the future of food around the world, and creates a global conversation about the challenge of feeding more than 9 billion people nutritiously by 2050. With the theme “American Food 2.0: United to Feed the Planet” it tells America’s food story – one of innovation, diversity and entrepreneurship – through topics including food security and policy, international relations, science and technology, nutrition and health, and culinary culture.
Designed by award-winning architect James Biber, the USA Pavilion pays homage to America’s rich agricultural history with an open design delimited by a large vertical farm that will be harvested daily. The fully sustainable building features a boardwalk made from wood repurposed from the Coney Island boardwalk, a large video installation, interactive exhibition areas, a rooftop terrace, VIP meeting spaces, and retail areas.

Since its first participation in a Universal Exhibition (Philadelphia in 1876), Mexico has always delivered an impressive pavilion that captures the imagination. The fundamental theme of Expo Milano 2015 is sustainability, being as much a driving principle for feeding the world’s population, as a criteria for architectural design, in terms of eco-friendly materials, ease of construction and dismantling, and fulfilling proposed programs. The architect Francisco López Guerra Almada, together with Jorge Vallejo and consulting biologist Juan Guzzy, designed the winning proposal of the international competition based on the most typical Mexican food: corn.
Indeed, its large external structure, inspired by the shape of a big corn cob, covers the 1,910 square-meter pavilion, set in a prime location at the intersection of the two main avenues. The interior offers an all-encompassing exhibition of typical produce, edged by a stream of water that gives life to the gardens and takes visitors along spiral ramps, to explore the gastronomic, ecological and cultural riches of Mexico.

Abundance and securityWithin this Cluster, visitors will be immersed in a rural setting featuring different varieties of rice growing in paddy fields, thanks to a kaleidoscopic effect, created with mirrors. The option to try actual rice products is available at the many kiosks situated throughout the public area.

Cocoa and chocolate: the food of GodsThe pavilions, all of a similar size and color, are identified by the exhibitor country’s flag and name. Display panels featuring drawings, icons, and images tell the many stories of cacao: from cultivation, via processing and transport, to distribution worldwide. In the Cluster, the tasting and relaxation area is linked to the section set aside for events, and also to the space where demonstrations related to cocoa and chocolate will take place.
The events area features bench-seating in a fan-shape formation. In addition to being used by the audience during performances, these seats are also available for visitors’ convenience throughout the day. Outside the pavilion is a green area with tables and benches where visitors leaving the Cacao Cluster, as well as passers-by, can take a quick break from exhibition-hopping.

Old and new cropsVisitors can move in the space between the pavilions, letting themselves be gently drawn along by the different examples of land cultivation. The canopy of the building takes the shape of a chimney and hosts an area for events and the distribution of themed culinary specialties.
Having finished their tour of this exhibition area, visitors can take part in a number of activities, or just sit and relax, enjoying the traditional dishes of the countries exhibiting in this cluster.

The exhibition space of the Principality of Monaco, which covers a total area of 1,010 square meters, is a project by Italian architect Enrico Pollini and presents itself as a space that invites visitors in from many different access points, reflecting the opportunities of ecology, recycling and reuse.
A large number of freight containers are used as part of the architecture, to remind us of the role of exchange represented by the Principality of Monaco, and finding opportunities for creative salvage. On the wooden roof, and similar to emergency curtains, is a compound of sphagnum, a light, permeable peat moss that allows the cultivation of Mediterranean crops. There are vertical gardens and a system for collecting rainwater. The interior design, managed by the German agency Facts and Fiction, draws visitors into a free-flow tour to explore a variety of topics that raise awareness, as proposed by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Oceanographic Institute. At the end of 2015, the structure will be dismantled and sent to an aid project of the Red Cross in Burkina Faso.

Health, beauty and harmonyThe area between the various member countries’ pavilions is keyed on the color blue, characteristic of the Mediterranean sea. In the center of the structure are the traditional open-air cooking areas that represent a classic image of this region.
Here, visitors will find a selection of products typical of Mediterranean cuisine: olive oil, bread, and various wines. In this area, visitors have the chance to take part in food preparation classes, or attend cooking demonstrations.
Places and food constitute the central theme of this Cluster, a three-fold story told, respectively, via images, literature, and cinema. The design of the Cluster integrates the structures needed to tell these stories. For example, on the twenty-one columns that frame the main square feature display panels which serve to link the three narratives.

Agriculture and nutrition in the arid zonesOn entering this Cluster, visitors encounter a water fountain that conveys the image of a natural oasis in an arid landscape. In this area, visitors are also provided with information, via presentations and performances that highlight the challenges, and resources, typical of these arid environments.
At the end of their tour of the Cluster, visitors will have the opportunity to sample and purchase some of the fruits and other products that thrive in these parts of the world.

Islands, sea and foodThe nations exhibiting within this cluster are housed in two pavilions linked by a large bamboo canopy. This creates a unique environment of colors and atmosphere. The walls of the pavilions feature quotations from well-known writers, including Homer, Joseph Conrad, Christopher Columbus, Charles Darwin, and Herman Melville, these words evocative of long sea-journeys to remote desert islands.
A visit to this Cluster ends at the refreshments and events area, a vast glass cube onto the walls of which are projected underwater images, conveying the feeling of actually being in the depths, enjoying these mysterious island seas, in close contact with their fascinating, yet fragile, biodiversity.
