Description:
Adelaide is faced with an energy crisis, with only 200 years of coal, 50 years of natural gas and 35 years of oil supplies left. The government encourages and facilitates the development of renewable energy. We can also help by using efficient appliances, reducing electricity usage and designing energy efficient houses.

Future Energy Demand

• The total installed name-plate capacity of the generating units in South Australia is currently 3505 megawatts (MW)

• The Planning Council forecasts average growth of around 26 MW annually over the next decade

•2020,the demand will be 3812 MW, It will be over 5000 MW by 2050.(Source: Planning Strategy for Metropolitan Adelaide December 2007)

Existing Plan for Energy

·In addition to the SASP target of meeting the Kyoto target by 2012, the Government has set a targetfor cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 60% of 1990 levels by 2050.·The Government will continue to encourage and facilitate the development of renewable energyproduction in South Australia, including solar, wind and geothermal power.Actions to achieve the SASP sustainability targets (as listed earlier) include:· Increasing the use of renewable electricity so that it accounts for 20% of total electricityconsumption within 10 years (increased in January 2006 from a target of 15%)· Extending the existing Solar Schools Program so that at least 250 schools have solar power within 10 years· Increasing energy efficiency of dwellings by 10% within 10 years by means such as theintroduction of a five-star energy requirement for new houses by May 2006

Policies1. Reduce energy requirements for transportation and buildings.2. Increase opportunities for development of alternative energy generation facilities inappropriate locations in urban areas.3. Increase efficiency of use of available energy infrastructure.

2050

• Close 45% of existing generating plant which use fossil fuel as source.

• Close 100% of existing generating plant which use fossil fuel as source.

• Increasing the use of renewable electricity so that it accounts for 20% of total electricity consumption

• Increasing the use of renewable electricity so that it accounts for 50% of total electricity consumption

• Increasing the use of renewable electricity so that it accounts for 100% of total electricity consumption

• Using efficient Appliance

•Reducing electricity usage

•Developing energy efficient house design

•Promotion and education
