Does YOUR network have Cell_PCH activated?Use the Energy Profiler to find out

If you have a Nokia Series 60 phone, you can check on your own to see if your operator has enabled Cell_PCH or not.

• Here's what you do:• Download the free Energy Profiler app from the Nokia

Ovi store and install it on your phone. • Start the Energy Profiler and go into Options, select

Settings, select Views, then set 3G Timers to "Active." • Start the Energy Profiler running. There are lots of

views -- the one you want is the one where the measurements on the left are in units of "Ch" -- this shows you which channel is being used (it has a pink line in the most recent version).

• Look at the baseline, the point to which the phone returns after any activity. If it's at the "3Ch" level as in the example above, then Cell_PCH is active in your network. If it's somewhere lower, like "1Ch", then Cell_PCH is not active in your network.

• If the pink line that shows the channel isn't varying at all, you can keep Energy Profiler running and go do some web browsing, then come back and check what has happened. But it’s the baseline state that will tell you if Cell_PCH is on or off.

• Here's what each state means:• 10ch = high speed data channel (high

battery use)• 4ch = shared data channel (mid

battery use)• 3ch = paging channel (low battery use)• 1ch = idle channel (low battery use)

You can use the Energy Profiler to demonstrate how much battery is being consumed as well

• Cell PCH not activated – non NSN

• Mobile email, Fring and Skype active, but only in the background

• Average current consumption of the terminal in 10 minutes test: 249 mA

• Signalling load of the RNC: high

• Cell PCH activated – NSN

• Mobile email, Fring and Skype active, but only in the background

• Average current consumption of the terminal in 10 minutes test: 182 mA, or 27% improvement over non-NSN in this example

• Signalling load of the RNC: low
