FTB Ferromagnetic Toroidal BallastThis new ferromagnetic ballast can be implemented for gas-discharge lamps both with high pressure sodium and metal halide (HMI) and has higher performances compared to standard ballasts, obtaining a +10 ÷ 20% efficiency which remains unaltered over the years;

What is it?This luminous flux regulator is a smart switchboard able to dim and monitor the supply voltage of the street lighting fixture.

Why so different?Solution #1: Fixtures with HID lamps
Solution #2: LED FixturesAs technology is still limited: more tech means more electronic components, weak when cheap and very expensive when sturdy. Efficient LEDs are the cool white ones (4000+K), rich in blue light. It is suggested to replace each luminaire completely every 10 years.
The expense for replacing bulbs and capacitors is included in the lease as it is ordinary maintenance;With EcoSmartGrid gas-discharge lamps are only 10/15% less efficient than LED, but way cheaper and reliable. With the quickest ROI this solution is the most environmentally friendly and the one that generates sensible revenues.

What do we usually forget…• Current LED lamps emit lots of light in the blue
area of the visible light spectrum – the most efficient LED are the Cool white ones, even richer in blue;

What do we usually forget…• It is proven that excessive blue light
exposure can damage mammal’s retina, disrupt circadian rythm and change fauna’s behaviour – reproduction wise;
• Blue light attracts more flying insects compared with gas-discharge lamps, which can be an issue in developing countries with insect-related diseases;

What do we usually forget…• LED production includes materials difficult
to dispose or recycle, such as Gallium, Indium and Arsenic;
• Short wavelenght light (blue / cold white) like the one coming from exposed-chip LEDs produce extra glare, dangerous while driving especially in foggy environment and in elder people’s eyes because it can impair nighttime vision; this is relevant especially for responsibilities in road safety in municipalities.

What do we usually forget…• Replacing lamps with LEDs is convenient only
in certain occasions: we install LEDs when poles are less than 4m tall, or in conditions where maintenance is expensive or difficult (e.g. tunnels);
• The world is lacking Light Design standards hence project managers offered with cheap LED replacement often forget considering interdistance between poles, resulting in roads with extra bright spots and dark areas: we always provide uniformity and if we install LEDs we use LEDs with a color temperature of 3000K or less only.

• Global trend is to use outdoor lighting lampposts as nodes for digital services, smart city oriented;
• Global trend – powered by LED producers lobbies – is to add mesh wireless networks (11 to 54Mbps) to LED lamps to enable Broadband sensors, or (U)NBWAN modules to enable remote control (hence more electronics + more electromagnetic emissions)
• Generally, Broadband over Power Line Communication on public lighting fixtures is difficult and unstable, until now, until EcoSmartGrid.
