SUMMARY In summary, this report highlights statistics pertaining to the Electricity sector and the period under review is from June to December 2013. Total number of electricity subscribers was 403,133 as of the fourth quarter 2013 from 388,085 for the third quarter 2013 this represents 3.7% increase. The city of Kigali has the largest market share of 38% followed by the Eastern province that has 24%, Western province has 13%, Southern province has 15% and the Northern Province has 10%. The total independent power producers were 11 as of December 2013.

ELECTRICITY Rwanda has continued to show an increasing trend in the number of electricity subscribers. This is attributed to the government objective of increasing accessibility of this utility to people both in Rural and urban areas. Secondary it might be attributed to the increasing new infrastructures in terms of new buildings coming up.

In this quarter the production of electricity decreased by 0.05% from 105,862,410 kWh to 105,809,870 kWh.This was mainly due to the decrease of water levels in the lakes Ruhondo and Bulera that supply Mukungwa and Ntaruka Hydro power plants and the maintenance of some power plants that took place in this quarter under review.

The Government of Rwanda is currently looking for other means to generate electricity other than depending only on Hydro power and thermal electricity, these includes solar energy, peat energy, methane gas etc.

The total electricity production slightly decreased from 105,862,410 kWh to 105,809,870kWh due to some production plants which include Mukungwa and Rukarara that faced a drop in electricity production and power plants such as Rugezi, Cyimbili and Mazimeru that were not operational. However other plants not mentioned here above experienced an increase in their electricity production.

The biggest share of the imports come from Rusizi II Power Plant owned by SINELAC. The electricity produced by this plant is shared equally by three countries (Burundi, DRC and Rwanda).
