Legislative, economic, and environmental drivers continue to place increasing pressure on manufacturing companies to optimise fuel and power utilisation and minimise fuel- related emissions. The complexity of integrated refining, petrochemical and production facilities, along with varying seasonal and operational demands, a wide variety of tariff structures, and emissions-related costs, has made the task of ensuring minimum-cost and emissions-compliant utility system operation an increasingly difficult undertaking. To address these needs, KBC’s Energy-SIM uses the industry- established ProSteamplatform to simulate and optimise utility systems and power plants. Energy-SIM can be applied to the most simple or the most complex site utility configurations across a wide range of industries. Energy-SIM offers ease of use, robust, real-time, on-line energy cost optimisation, on-line performance monitoring and advanced scenario and forecasting capabilities. Designed for use in real-time plant operating facilities and for off-line engineering design and study needs, Energy-SIM simplifies and standardises the way you develop and deliver complex utility system models throughout your organisation. Legislative, economic, and environmental drivers continue to place increasing pressure on manufacturing companies to optimise fuel and power utilisation and minimise fuel-related emissions. The complexity of integrated refining, petrochemical and production facilities, along with varying seasonal and operational demands, a wide variety of tariff structures, and emissions-related costs, has made the task of ensuring minimum-cost and emissions-compliant utility system operation an increasingly difficult undertaking.

To address these needs, KBC’s Energy-SIM uses the industry-established ProSteam™ platform to simulate and optimise utility systems and power plants.

EnergyThe Energy-SIM Platform

ProSteam™KBC’s ProSteam, with its advanced thermodynamic and equipment simulation capabilities, is an industry-leading application used in operating companies to reduce operational and capital utility costs by modelling and optimising the design and operation of site utility systems, including steam, fuel, power, water, refrigeration and resulting emissions. ProSteam is at the core of the calculation platform for Energy-SIM.

Energy-SIMKBC’s Energy-SIM is a proven and established energy system performance monitoring and optimisation platform. Complex utility systems can be modelled using rigorous fluid property data, without having to construct complex heat and material balance equations. The model will accurately reflect the configuration of steam systems, cogeneration units, fuel distribution and condensate return. These system-wide balances are all generated automatically by Energy-SIM.

Fully capable of accessing on-line plant information systems, Energy-SIM generates real-time plant energy balances and operating characteristics as a basis for performance monitoring and optimisation. Case study scenarios are simple to generate using current, user-defined or historical performance information, including, for example, the addition of new units and energy system components, production forecasting for different unit throughputs, unit shutdowns or turndowns, modified steam use and generation quantities, different turbine line-outs and configurations, such as moving users and turbines between steam levels. The program adjusts the overall energy balances and maintains heat and material balance integrity automatically.

Energy-SIM™ facilitates better understanding of your energy systems through its intuitive diagrams, tables and graphs. It has an interactive graphical interface with “drilldown” functionality to the process unit and individual component level with a rich selection of built-in key performance indicators (KPIs). Its reports are used by operating, engineering and management staff for effective system and equipment performance monitoring.

Databridge ModuleThis module collects and validates raw data from various sources and then to pass consolidated data to Energy-SIM. It is typically configured to connect to the site data historian (Uniformance PHD®, OSI PI®, IP.21®), but may also connect to other data sources.

Optimiser ModuleThe optimisation component includes proprietary algorithms that allow Energy-SIM to rigorously determine the most profitable utility system operating settings. Optimisation scope includes the steam system, fuel system, power import/export, major equipment operation and switching (boilers, steam turbines, gas turbines, HRSGs).

The Optimiser advises on operation of boilers, co-gen units, turbo-generators, steam turbines, turbine/motor sets and fuel users to properly balance and optimise the operating cost of the combined system.

Energy-SIM operates within Microsoft® Excel® and takes advantage of the extensive flexibility this platform offers, which allows end users to easily add customised elements to the standardised product. Energy-SIM is easy to learn and inexpensive to maintain. Standard and user-defined KPI’s can be exported to plant data historians and Energy-SIM’s SQL database for enterprise-wide, web-based performance reporting.

The Energy-SIM Suite contains all the components for an integrated and automated workflow process for energy system plant data retrieval, data reconciliation, steam, power and fuel system balancing, energy cost optimisation and performance monitoring and reporting.

Energy-SIMThe core simulation component of the Suite, containing detailed models of the steam, fuel, water, power and economics that apply to the utility system. It calculates and reports KPIs, EIVs and other parameters.

The Energy-SIM SuitePerformance DatabaseThis database stores the simulation and optimisation results, allowing the reporting components to retrieve them for plotting trends, etc. The database stores key system performance parameters for the total site, as well as for individual process units and equipment items. These include total steam use and energy use by type, Specific Energy Ratios and Steam Use Ratios by type, total steam cost, and energy cost differentials against base, optimum and target operating conditions.

KBC has a unique focus on:Quality. Innovation. Support. Value.

All of these areas of focus are backed up by our industry-leading consulting capabilities to help provide answers for our diverse clients. In addition, world class technical support is available to all of our customers under a maintenance agreement.

Energy-SIM is built on the industry-leading ProSteam platform with extended capabilities for real-time energy system optimisation and performance monitoring, with quick and robust proprietary algorithms for developing comprehensive plant energy system models. Years of expert modelling and user experience are built in to ensure it aligns with your day to day and long-term energy management needs. Energy-SIM can be used for simple site utility systems through to the most complex of energy systems and power generation facilities. It performs all of the system-wide mass and energy balances, and equipment performance calculations for key items. It can be used off-line to evaluate any user-defined operating or engineering case study scenario, and can be connected to electronic data historians to monitor, optimise and report plant operation in real-time.

Performance MonitorPerformance Monitor is an Excel® application for viewing standard and custom reports of current and historical simulation and optimisation results stored in the Performance Database. This component can be used on any PC that has network connectivity to the Database.

Automation ControllerAutomation Controller controls automatic “on-line” execution of the software. Typically configured to execute hourly, this component is installed on the “on-line” computer only.

ProSteam™ ProSteam provides rigorous utility equipment modelling (boilers, steam turbines, gas turbines), thermodynamic properties of steam and detailed combustion calculations. ProSteam is a highly successful product in its own right, ideal for end users to develop rigorous sub-models of utility systems.

Web Reports (Custom Deliverable) Energy-SIM™ Suite results can be provided by KBC to a web-based reporting environment as a custom solution for different third-party web reporting and “dashboard” applications.
