Forms of Energy

• mechanical energy• chemical energy• heat energy• sound energy• light energy• electrical energy• atomic or nuclear energy

Forms of Energy

Mechanical Energy = Potential and Kinetic energy

• Usain Bolt 100m In 9. 58 Seconds In Berlin – Mechanical Energy = Potential and Kinetic energy

Page 4: Energy Transfer

Chemical EnergyDescribe any similarities with mechanical energy.

Energy Transfer and Transformation Device• Rube Goldberg was a political cartoonist who

also drew cartoons that showed simple tasks performed in convoluted, indirect ways.

a chain reaction accomplishing a simple task such as; turning page, popping balloon, ringing bell…

Energy Transfer and Transformation Device

• design a device and bring items in from home to create it. Simple items such as paper towel tubes, ping-pong balls, dominoes, Matchbox cars and marbles are commonly used.

• The goal is to have at least 4 causes and effects for the group’s device.

Day 1 - Plan, Brainstorm and Design • Group packet consists of;– project brief page with

rubric and sample cartoons – project design and blueprint sheet.

• students work in groups of 4 and decide on a purpose. – make a list of supplies they can bring from home

for this project.

Day 1 - Plan, Brainstorm

• Students brainstorm ways to accomplish their purpose in more than 8 steps. This is 4 causes and effects (Example: ball knocks down dominoes is one cause and effect.)

• Students sketch the design and get it approved by the teacher.

Day 2 – Design and Experiment

• Students sketch the design and get it approved by the teacher.

• Students start the hard work of trial and error.• Begin experimenting and revising designs.

Think of other supplies you can bring from home.

• Students may even decide to change their purpose after experimenting!

Day 3 - Experiment and Revise

• Students will experiment and revise design

• Group must be able to set up their contraptions in 10 minutes.

• Day 3 is the last day for designing the Rube Goldberg contraptions.

Wednesday 8 August 2012

Day 4 – Final Practice Run

• Review the project rubric with the class. Remind students they should be able to set up the contraptions in 10 minutes. Give them timers to help them keep track of time. They should trouble shoot their contraptions and make corrections where needed.

Day 5 – Design Show

• On this the final day, students are given 10 minutes to set up their contraptions. The class is asked to move from contraption to contraption to view the final products.

• Each group should describe the purpose and contraption path to the class before starting the chain reaction. (5 minutes each = 40 minutes)
