Fort Buchanan
Household Energy Conservation
Fort Buchanan is subject to various regulations requiring energy management planning: 1) Executive Order (EO) 13514; 2)EO 13423; 3) Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct) and 4) Army Regulation 420-1 Energy conservation 3-41, for Army Facilities Management. The Executive Order 13423 has established water conservation goals to reduce energy intensity by 3% annually through the end of FY 2015 or by 30% total by the end of FY 2015 (using FY 2003 as the baseline). Meanwhile, EO 13514, establishes an integrated strategy towards sustainability in the Federal Government and to make reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) a priority for Federal agencies. The Fort Buchanan Energy Conservation Program seeks to support the mission by providing utility and equipment resources while conserving energy and costs whenever possible.
4. Use appliances
efficiently
A refrigerator is one of those k i tchen app l iances tha t consumes too much electricity. Use it wisely. Open the door only briefly and adjust the "Cold" control according to the manufacturer 's direct ions. Clean refrigerator coils at regular intervals. Use the moisture sensor feature present in the new clothes dryers; do not use timed drying. Clean the lint filter after each load; it will increase energy efficiency and the air circulation.

2. Cooling
Cooling your home uses more energy and drains more energy dollars than any other system in your home. Typically, 30% of your utility bill goes for cooling. No matter what kind of ventilation and air conditioning system you have in your house, you can save money and increase your comfort by properly maintaining the air conditioners and preventing air leaks. Whenever upgrading your equipment make sure to select energy-efficient products such as the ones labeled as Energy Star certified equipment.
1. Conserving
electricity
Electricity consumed for lighting typically c ons t i t u t es just under 10 percent of the h o u s e h o l d energy budget. One way to reduce that number is to replace frequently used incandescent lights with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. These long lasting bulbs use about one third of the power required to produce the same amount of light that is produced by a standard incandescent bulb.

3. Gourmet savings
Using the right sized pot on stove burners can save about $36 annually for an electric range, or $18 for gas. Covering pots and pans also helps you cook more efficiently and keeps your kitchen cooler. You can reduce cooking energy by as much as 80 percent when using your microwave for small portions. This also helps save on A/C costs in summer, since less heat is generated when compared to using your stove or oven.
5. Do not forget the basics
Turn off lights and other appliances when not in use or when you are out of the house. This is one of the easiest measures to save electricity and slash electricity bills. Unplug seldom-used appliances and chargers when you are not charging. Use power strips to switch off televisions, computers, home theater equipment, and stereos when you are not using them. Even when you think these products are off, together, their "standby" consumption can be equivalent to that of a 75 or 100 watt light bulb running continuously.

Water Conservation What You Can Do!
The Environmental Division would like to thank all military,
civilian and students that have helped to promote water
conservation! But, there is more to do...
We depend on You!!!
Fort Buchanan has three main regulations that require water management planning: the Executive Order (EO)13514; Army Regulation AR420-46 for Water Supply and Wastewater; and Army Regulation AR420-49 for Utility Services. The EO 13514 has established water conservation goals for the Federal government that include the development of a water management plan for individual sites. Identifying Water Conservation Measures (WCMs) is important to reduce water consumption on Post, and also in order to implement Best Management Practices (BMPs). Fort Buchanan has been selected by Deputy Assistance Secretary of the Army for Installation Energy and Environment as a Net Zero Water Installation. A Net Zero Water Installation limits use of potable fresh water then captures, repurposes or recharges an amount of water equal to or greater than the amount of water it consumes.
Inside the Home
Toilet Check for leaks by adding food coloring to the
tank. Color will appear in the bowl within 30
minutes if there is a leak.
If the handle sticks frequently, adjust or replace.
Place a plastic bottle filled with water inside the
tank to reduce the amount of water needed for
each flush.
Avoid unnecessary flushing. Place tissues and
other debris in the trash.
Shower/Bath Shut the water off while brushing your teeth,
shaving, or washing your face.
Replace your showerhead with an ultra low-flow
(1/2 a gallon of water per minute). It saves up to
2.5 gallons per minute.
Take shorter showers.
Close the tub drain before turning on the
bathwater and only fill the tub 1/3 full.
Kitchen Minimize the use of the food disposal unit.
Start a compost pile.
Discontinue use of bottle water.
Run the dishwasher only when full.
Fill the sink with water to wash vegetables
rather than leaving the water run.
Laundry Wash full loads. Be sure to set the machine for
the correct load size.
Purchase appliances with water and energy
saving options.
Outside the Home Water lawns and plants in the morning or
late evening to reduce evaporation.
Avoid watering on windy days.
Raise your lawn mower an inch.
Set sprinklers to water grass and garden
areas rather than driveways and
sidewalks.
When washing your car, use a trigger
nozzle on the hose to automatically shut
the water off when not in use.
Use a broom to sweep off sidewalks and
driveways rather than hosing them off
with water.
Check for leaking outside faucets, hoses
and irrigation systems and make repairs
quickly.
Use mulch around plants to hold
moisture and reduce ground temperature.
Only water when plants and grass need it
rather than on a set schedule.
Purchase or build your own rain barrel to
capture rain from the gutters to water
plants.
Consider creating a conservation friendly
landscape that can also be hassle-free for
the homeowner.
Helpful Hints Reduce water consumption and save big dollars on heating, water softening, and sewer costs.
Don’t pour water down the drain if it can be used elsewhere, like watering
plants.
Place rain gauge in an open area of the landscaping to measure rain and
irrigation water accumulation.
Indoor Water Use The greatest water uses in an average home:
·Toilets: 45% ·Showers: 30%
·Laundry: 20% ·Drinking and cooking: 5%
·During summer months: 50% of household water
is used in the lawn and garden.
