Saudi Arabia‘s leading ICT companies will con-verge at GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK to demon-strate their technological innovation and connect with international brands looking to take part in one of the region‘s most dynamic ICT markets. Major economic reforms and diversification initiatives have paved the way for increased investment oppor-tunities in Saudi Arabia‘s knowledge sector, resulting in major advancements within the Kingdom‘s buoyant ICT industry. In addition, the Saudi Arabian government‘s forward-thinking economic diversification strategy and record-breaking oil revenues have driven extensive develop-ment in a range of verticals, with significant investments being made in the country‘s communications sector. Plans for mega-projects such as Economic City have provided further incentives for global ICT companies to set up in the Kingdom, propelling foreign direct investment into a country many now see as a flourish-ing technology hub."The Saudi Arabian ICT market has witnessed major development over the past year and remains a major point of interest for exhibitors and trade visitors to

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK," said Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director General, Dubai World Trade Centre."As one of the region‘s most competitive ICT markets, Saudi Arabia is producing a new breed of innovative technology companies, capable of tailoring their solu-tions to meet the needs of regional companies," he added. According to IDC, Saudi Arabia accounts for nearly 45% of IT spending in the GCC - prompting a growing number of regional and international compa-nies to establish a Saudi market presence and pursue lucrative development opportunities in its buoyant ICT sector.

(September 9). This is an annual event which has been very popular in the past five years. “We expect to have a lot of very important industry colleagues, existing and potential customers at the dinner, which will be an excellent opportunity for informal meetings and networking,” Shaybani concludes.

ODG (Optical Disc Group), which recently moved its Dubai headquarters to a mod-ern purpose-build building in the Dubai Silicon Oasis, has been reporting great success in the Middle East market.

"The company represents a number of equipment and

service providers, who comprise the Optical Disc Technology Centre in Dubai: DaTARIUS, Dr Schenk, Hanky, Ilsemann, M2, Netstal, Piovan, and TRIX.“This has been a very

good few months for us,” says Reza Shaybani, Managing Director of ODG. “We have sold 64 lines this year so far, both recordable and pre-recorded, to existing and new custom-ers. Some lines have gone into Europe, but the bulk have them have gone to Middle East & Iran. Business is very good in the Middle East, both in the optical media industry and

in solar technology, an activity which we started in 2006 under Solar Technology Group, and expanding rapidly. The optical media industry is still a growth area, and the market here has never really slowed down for us.”ODG views the GITEX show as vital for any company that wants to increase its activities in this dynamic market, and has exhibited there for several years. This year, the group has a 50 sqm booth that is coupled to the MEDIA-TECH Association Member Pavilion.“Our section of the booth will have a full line of equipment running, including M2 SQ1, Netstal E-jet moulding equipment and a DaTARIUS DaTABANK. We expect to be selling that system off the show floor,” says Shaybani. “GITEX is an extremely valuable showcase for our industry’s technology – the visitors here are the senior management of companies in the Middle East and represent a huge amount of decision-making and buying power.” The companies who visit GITEX, he adds, are across the board, including devel-opers, publishers, copyright holders, and distributors.ODG has hired the ballroom of Dubai’s Stock Exchange, a building normally closed to the public, for its invita-tion-only gala dinner on the second night of the show

Dear Members, dear Colleagues,

Following a number of discussions with various members, the MEDIA-TECH Association is planning to suspend the US equipment shows in the short term and to keep the Expo events in Europe for the fol-lowing two years. The Frankfurt show next year will go ahead as planned, and details of the 2009 Expo will be released to mem-bers as soon as they are confirmed. Europe is the true hub of the equipment in-dustry, making it easier and less expensive for manufacturers to ship systems within the continent than across the Atlantic. In addition, the optical media industry is a global one, and it is easier for our interna-tional customers to travel to Europe.

Conversely, the US market is well suited for the conference format, and another topic that has been the subject of much discussion with the Association and its members is the combined Showcase and Conference. Many members believe that the showcase format is no longer the success that it was in the early days, and that it would be more beneficial to have dedi-cated conferences. As a result, we are investigating a joint conference, along with other related associa-tions, such as AIMMA and IDDA, to be held in the US – probably Miami – in March of next year. This will follow the two-day format but will focus on network-ing opportunities and presentations from industry experts, rather than showcase displays.Members have also requested cost-effective ways of being able to reach emerging markets. As you all know, we have established a Members Pavilion

The new MEDIA-TECH Association Board kicked off its work with a meeting in Amsterdam in early July. Elected at the MEDIA-TECH Expo 2007, the new board met officially for the first time on this occasion. On the agenda was the distribution of responsibilities as well as the discussion of future proj-ects and events.MEDIA-TECH Association Managing Director Bryan Ekus was very satisfied: “I think we had a successful start here in Amsterdam. The Board members, to-gether as a team, are all eager to serve our members with new initiatives to make the most of existing business op-portunities while exploring new tech-nologies and directions.”Among these initiatives, said Ekus, are a closer working relationship with other organizations. “We are also planning a presence for members at trade shows in growth areas, and the first of these will be a members’ pavilion at the upcoming GITEX in Dubai this September.”

for the September GITEX show in Dubai. This is a large booth with an ideal location in the main hall of this important tech-nology show. We expect GITEX to be a very successful event, and we are still accept-ing applications from companies who wish to participate in this Pavilion. However, space is becoming more limited so please reserve your meeting area now.If you require any further information on any of these matters, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours truly
