2 2018 INGLESIDE ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from the Ingleside Board ChairBRUCE BARTELSBOARD CHAIR INGLESIDE

As the population ages, Ingleside has experienced an increase in demand for holistic, diverse and forward-thinking living opportunities, and we continue to evolve and develop more options for supporting older adults. The year 2019 will be exciting as we approach the final repositioning phases of our expansions at both Ingleside at King Farm and Ingleside at Rock Creek communities. Renovations have begun at our Westminster at Lake Ridge community.

Our two new additions, Creekside (Ingleside at Rock Creek) and Gardenside (Ingleside at King Farm) will offer exceptional independent living residences, and will benefit from a state-of-the-art Center for Healthy Living. The Centers demonstrate our ongoing dedication to provide current and future residents with robust amenities and programs as part of an integrated, engaged life. Westminster at Lake Ridge has seen great progress with its renovation project, which is anticipated for completion in Summer 2020.

As residents’ needs evolve, Ingleside remains steadfast in providing the continuum of services focusing on skilled nursing, short- and long-term care, assisted living, and memory support at each community. In addition, as part of our continued efforts to share our expertise in senior care with the greater community, we have expanded Ingleside at Home’s reach, which now offers home- and community-based services to residents in the greater Northern Virginia and Montgomery County, MD communities.

All of these efforts represent Ingleside’s vision and mission to lead the way by creating diverse and enriched opportunities for older adults and providing strategic, operational leadership that enables our affiliates to excel as an organization.

2018 INGLESIDE ANNUAL REPORT 3

This year, 2019, marks 20 years for the Westminster Ingleside Foundation, which was established as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, with a focus on promoting the well-being of older adults. The Foundation today continues its dedication to enhance the quality of life for the residents of the three Ingleside communities, respecting their individuality and dignity, and ensuring that they have a welcoming and supportive home throughout their lifetime.

All three Ingleside communities, in 2018, saw a further expansion of their Resident Support Funds that are designed to help residents to stay in their community even if they face devastating financial losses through no fault of their own. The use of these funds continued to remain below new donations. At the same time, donations have taken new forms designed to help improve well-being throughout the communities. We are grateful for the kindness and generosity of several major donors to the Ingleside at King Farm Employee Scholarship Endowment Fund, which launched in April 2019.  The Kreider Professional Development Endowment Fund at Westminster at Lake Ridge received additional money from donors throughout the year, and Ingleside at Rock Creek had a strong charitable gift annuity program from gifts from residents.

With that and our investment returns, at the end of last year the Foundation net assets stood at just over $8.3 million.

This year’s Annual Report highlights some of the amazing volunteer work at Ingleside at Rock Creek, Westminster at Lake Ridge, and Ingleside at King Farm. We hope you enjoy reading these stories of community engagement and unwavering charitable giving. On behalf of the Foundation, I want to again express our sincerest appreciation for everyone’s continued support.

4 2018 INGLESIDE ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from thePresident and CEOLYNN O’CONNORPRESIDENT AND CEO INGLESIDE

The Ingleside family emulates Anne Frank’s “spirit of giving.”

Ingleside is grateful for board members, residents, staff, donors, volunteers, and families who in 2018 volunteered over 83,000 hours, such as:

Providing for Seniors Who Have Outlived Their Income and Assets— More than 40 residents from Ingleside's three communities received over $2.2 million in donations gifted through our Foundation’s resident supporting funds and through aid to residents receiving Medicaid where fees are subsidized to cover the entire expense.

Mentoring Young Women—Rosemary Monagan, an Ingleside at Rock Creek donor, has devoted her life to mentoring young women. Rosemary participated in the 2018 Distinguished Young Women of DC Scholarship Program where she held mock interviews with local high schoolers as a way to assist the young women as they enter the workforce.

Alzheimer’s Awareness, The Longest Day—Creating awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and raising money were the goals of Westminster at Lake Ridge’s 2018 The Longest Day event. About 60 residents wearing ‘Love Never Forgets’ T-shirts walked for the cause. Proceeds from sales were donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ingleside at King Farm Employee Scholarship Endowment Fund—The fund will be available to all active, benefit-eligible employees who have been continuously employed at Ingleside at King Farm for at least six months. The fund was made possible by several Ingleside at King Farm resident donations.

Ingleside Shares—Approximately 25 Ingleside HQ employees, through the Ingleside Shares initiatives, have been giving back to our resident and external communities, through volunteer service.

Thank you to the Ingleside family for “not waiting a single moment before starting to improve the world!”

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

Mentoring Young Women—A Life-Long Mission

Rosemary Monagan is a self-described champion for women. She has devoted much of her life to working with girls and young women, mentoring and guiding them towards success in life. So, when she was asked to participate in the 2018 Distinguished Young Women of DC Scholarship Program (DYWDC), hosted by Ingleside at Rock Creek (IRC), she jumped at the chance. The program combines the chance to win college scholarships and offers life skills training. During the day-long event, Rosemary conducted ‘mock’ interviews with area high schoolers as a way to offer guidance and feedback that will help the young women as they head out into the world. “It was a great experience and reminded me of my work with the YWCA girls clubs early in my career,” she says. “We offered feedback on details such as demeanor, dress, and answers to questions.”

Hosting events such as the DYWDC is a great benefit to both the IRC residents and the younger generations, according to Rosemary as everyone walks away with a broader, fresh perspective on a successful life. In her storied life, Rosemary has been the wife of a seven-term congressman from the Fifth District of Connecticut, Congressman John Monagan, and mother of five. She volunteered at the Smithsonian for 33 years restoring ancient pottery, as well as for the Woman’s National Democratic Club. Rosemary worked at the White House for former First Lady Hilary Clinton.

As vast and varied as her own experiences, Rosemary is continually impressed by the sophistication of today’s generation of young women compared to those of her own. This 93-year-old dynamo never stops learning.

Keeping Home, Sweet Home

In the 11 years since making Ingleside at Rock Creek (IRC) her home, Sinclair Winton has helped lead the way for fundraising to support the IRC community and in particular its Resident Supporting Fund. “We are all aging and we are all living longer,” she says of herself and her neighbors. “I think for some, the only way to stay in their home is with a bit of help.”

In 2018, Sinclair took a different approach to support her community by using her refundable entrance fee to create a charitable gift annuity (CGA). She chose to designate her gift not just to the IRC resident supporting fund, but more broadly, for any purpose beneficial to the IRC community. Sinclair decided to use the income to support two of her grandchildren in their pursuits of advanced degrees and in one instance assistance to purchase a home.

The mother of three is a former teacher and life-long artist. Her love for her home is seen all around her with art from places such as Ghana, China, Sri Lanka and, of course, the sculptures she has created. Sinclair has spent much of her life giving back and her efforts are ongoing. At 88 she still tends to her patio garden but also to the garden she created in the community space at IRC. It gives her joy and her neighbors enjoy it too.

Like the garden, a CGA was a way to help keep IRC fellow residents in their ‘happy place’ as well, she adds. “It always makes me feel good to give and our residents have so many needs. I was able to help and I’m glad I did,” she says.

A Worthy Encore

Several days a week you can find Westminster at Lake Ridge (WLR) resident Dona Hobbs and company working hard at its ever-eclectic Encore Shop. The volunteer-run thrift shop is a treasure trove and one never knows what they’ll find inside. From lamps to luncheon plates or curtains to candle sticks, Encore is the temporary home for hundreds of donated items waiting for their next landing spot.

Dona, along with many fellow volunteers including Janet Murphy-Gloss, Judy Christian, and Beverly Pugh, uses the funds raised from the shop to benefit WLR residents and local charities such as the Salvation Army. Because of Encore’s success, the shop was able to donate $5,000 to the WLR Resident Supporting Fund in memory of Encore founder, Eethel Johnson. “Without Eethel there would be no Encore” says Hobbs.

Encore is aided by many different groups – from the residents who staff the shop and those who repair furniture and clocks to the WLR staff who help with the heavy lifting. It’s a labor of love, says Dona, who has been volunteering her time at Encore since moving to Westminster seven years ago. In addition to giving back to their community with donations and treasures, the volunteers say Encore is also a destination for social interaction for many residents. “They come and engage with the volunteers and other shoppers,” she says. And that’s a win-win for all.

The Longest Day

Creating awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and raising money were the goals of Westminster at Lake Ridge's (WLR) 2018 Longest Day, an event that crossed the finish line with great success according to committee member and WLR resident George Marling. The Longest Day is a national program of the Alzheimer’s Association geared toward raising awareness of the disease that impacts not only those afflicted, but their family, friends, and heroic care givers.

The day began with a walk around the picturesque WLR campus with residents donning ‘Love Never Forgets’ t-shirts in support of the Alzheimer’s Association. Residents purchased the t-shirts and proceeds from the sale were donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. Along the way, several donation stations were set up that allowed walkers to learn more about the disease and, of course, additional ways to support research.

About 60 residents walked, and more than $1,800 was raised between t-shirt sales and donations.

Next up was the food and entertainment! Nearly 100 Westminster at Lake Ridge residents spent the rest of the day enjoying a cookout and an ice cream float social, and listening to live music and dancing.

George and his wife Laura have enjoyed living in their WLR cottage for seven years. He has been committed to serving others through his membership in the WLR Social Outreach Committee, Spiritual Life Committee, and Development Committee and participating in annual events such as the Clipper Drive Clean-Up, Toys for Tots holiday drive, and the Penny Pantry. Community involvement is an enriching way of life for George and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Bridging the Generational Gap

Who says opposites can’t attract?

That is exactly what Ron McKee and other residents at Ingleside at King Farm (IKF) say about their time spent with area teens as part of the Link Generations program. Designed to give both residents and teens the opportunity to learn from each other, Link Generations is a bridge that brings different generations together in round-table discussions for a rewarding, enriching experience. Glass ceilings, peer pressure and even the cost of a movie are just some of the conversation starters at the events and Ron says he is both mentor and student during the sessions.

A retired IBM engineer and 10-year IKF resident, Ron especially enjoys talking about the impact of technology on today’s younger generations.

Link Generations founder, Lori Marks, PhD., first approached IKF in 2016 and the result has been well received. One of the programs even includes an interactive experience with students from Newport Academy, an area school that transitions teens from mental health residential treatment back to school.

Marks believes the benefit for IKF residents is learning about other people and to feel a sense of purpose and meaning because they are paying it forward for younger generations. At 85, Ron has a new respect for the younger generation as a result of his involvement in Link Generations and adds it would have been a missed opportunity if he was not an IKF resident.

As for the cost of a movie back in the day, he says he loves to see the look on students’ faces when his answer is “oh, about 9 cents”.

INGLESIDE AT KING FARM

All in the Family

Education is very important to the Pinckernell family and supporting the Ingleside at King Farm (IKF) Employee Scholarship Endowment Fund was the perfect way for IKF resident Louise Pinckernell (with the guidance of her children, Susan Denecke and Charles “Chet” Pinckernell) to give back to IKF.

The newly formed IKF Scholarship Fund was established by a group of generous donors. It will provide up to $1,000, per approved application, to IKF employees who choose to further their education and/or to finalize US citizenship applications. As of the date of this publication, the fund stands at almost, $600,000 with a goal of $1,000,000. (Each $100,000 in the endowment will create four annual, $1,000 scholarships.) “My family has always had a high respect for education,” says Susan who is very proud of her 90-year-old mother’s MBA, noting “That’s very unusual for someone of her generation.”

The Pinckernells have a soft spot for Ingleside. Susan’s parents, the late Harry Pinckernell and Louise, have been involved with Ingleside since the 1970s. Harry was on the Board of Directors and was involved with the development of Westminster at Lake Ridge. Louise served on the Westminster Ingleside Foundation Board of Directors and was involved in the development of IKF. Susan continues the family’s Ingleside legacy as a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

To Susan, it was important to give back to those who care for her mom and her mom’s neighbors. Supporting the IKF Employee Scholarship Endowment Fund was a perfect way to express her family’s gratitude toward the IKF staff as well as demonstrate her family’s commitment to the importance of education for all. The Pinckernell gift makes her happy and will help others to grow and develop their careers and lives. “Education is something no one can take away from you,” she says.
