What does the lordrequire of you

    but to act justly, love

    tenderly,

    and walk humbly with

    your god?

Micah attacked the social, economic and religiousleaders of his time in the toughest language possible.

He said the landowners were cheats, the merchantswere greedy, the priests were hypocrites, and theprophets were false. He said those in charge eat the

flesh of my people, and flay their skin from them, andbreak their bones. They chop them in pieces like

    flesh in a kettle. (3:2-3).

Micah calls us to social justice spirituality. Weare called to act justly, love tenderly, and walkhumbly with our god. Not justice alone. Not love

alone. Not walking humbly with god alone. Nonestand alone.

Justice, love, and spirituality are to beintertwined in our lives.

In order to act justly, we must love tenderly and

walk humbly with God. In order to love tenderly,we must act justly and walk humbly with God.And in order to walk humbly with God, we mustact justly and love tenderly.

This is not a spirituality in competition with a life

of action for justice. A spirituality that is devoted only to

trying to develop a personal relationship with God whichignores or de-emphasizes the demand to create a more

just world with our neighbors is not real spirituality.

A spirituality that does not insist that we act justly andloving toward the poor and oppressed

in our world is an incomplete spirituality.

But likewise, a life that tries only to be concerned aboutjustice and love, without an interior life, is incomplete.

To walk humbly with God isspirituality.

We must create the time to takethat walk.

There are times when all of us

have felt that we are too busy tospend time meditating.

    Action without contemplation is a

    recipe for burnout.

I think her spirituality is the key... If she had

just totally lost herself in the Worker, itwouldn't have been Dorothy Day at all. Sheobviously resisted being overwhelmed by thework and took her time to be private and to

read and pray. This was a woman of silencesas well as intense activity, and you felt it when

    you were with her.

Spirituality is an awareness of the presence of theSacred in all life.

Spirituality suggests that all life is one, all life isinterdependent.

Essentially, all life on the planet is connected as a"web of life" and justice encourages a relationshipamong all parts of the web.

    Spirituality

Not something apart from everyday life.

It is an experience that occurs in the midst of, and

gives depth and integrity to our lives as people wholive in a particular culture, in a particular place andtime.

    Anyway

People are unreasonable, illogical and self centered

    Love them anyway

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior

    motives

    Do good anyway

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies

    Succeed anyway

The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow

    Do good anyway

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable

    Be honest and frank anyway

What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight

    Build anyway

People really need help but may attack you if you help them

Help people anywayGive the world the best you have

and youll get kicked in the teeth

Give the world the best youve got anyway
