Number one in GermanyMTU Aero Engines is Germany’s leading enginemanufacturer and ranks among the globalplayers in the industry. It designs, develops, manufactures, markets and supports commer-cial and military aircraft engines, as well asindustrial gas turbines, for customers aroundthe world. A respected partner in cooperativeventures, it collaborates with the world’s majorengine manufacturers. From these activities,MTU has derived a broad, balanced productportfolio that gives it content in all thrust andpower categories. With its technology lead, thecompany again and again stimulates majorcomponent and subsystem areas like compres-sors, combustors and turbines. Notably MTU’slow-pressure turbines and high-pressure com-pressors count among the best-of-class world-wide.

Leaders in engineering and serviceThe need for reduced fuel consumption, emis-sions and life-cycle costs is the great challengefor tomorrow’s engines. MTU is responding toit with its Claire (Clean Air Engine) initiative, developing innovative technologies to set newbenchmarks even now. Achievements likethese are predicated on a great store of expe-rience and outstanding expertise. With its over75 years in the business, MTU has both. Mostof its revenues have been deriving from thedevelopment, production and maintenance ofcommercial engine components.

MTU Aero Engines As Germany’s industrial lead company forpractically all engines flown by the country’smilitary, the Munich-based company claimsleadership also in the military arena, where it provides enabling technologies, developsand manufactures engines and engine compo-nents, offers technical logistic support for theoverall product and trains customers. MTU andthe German military are blazing new trails withtheir cooperation with the German Air Forcethat in an integrated win-win approach letsthem share as equals in the maintenance ofEJ200, RB199, J79, RR250-C20 and MTR390engines.

Partners down the roadMTU’s mantra is “Get things done jointly”. Withthat in mind, it sees itself as a competentpartner of its customers, implementing newpropulsion concepts and developing new mate-rials and processes that open up entirely newopportunities in engine construction. Theseare key to shaping the future with continuouslyimproved technologies and to advancing inno-vation in aviation.

PW4000 GrowthTwo-spool 329–436-kN turbofan. The PW4000Growth ranks among the world’s most powerfulengines. Its sevenstage low-pressure turbine is thelargest ever developed by MTU. The engine hasfound a home on the Boeing 777.

GP7000Two-spool 311–343-kN turbofan. The GP7000 is theideal offering for long-haul service and impresseswith its low fuel burn, weight and noise. It was de-veloped for the Airbus A380.

CF6Two-spool 178–320-kN turbofan. The popular engineis among the best-selling in its class. It powersmedium- and long-range widebodies like the AirbusA300, A310, A330, and Boeing 747, 767, DC-10and MD-11.

PW2000Two-spool 171–195-kN turbofan. It was on thePW2000 that in a first for the company, MTU tackledthe development of a commercial low-pressure turbine. The engine is used on the Boeing 757.

V2500Two-spool 102–142-kN turbofan. The V2500 is anotably environmentally friendly engine, which gotit its name as a “green engine”. It powers theAirbus A319, A320, A321, and the Boeing MD-90.

EJ200Two-spool reheated 90-kN turbofan. Starting withits Tranche 2, the engine control and monitoringfunctions are combined into a single DECMU. MTU isresponsible for the repair and overhaul of the engineunder the cooperation with the German Air Force.

F414Afterburning turbofan engine rated at 98-kN. TheF414, which powers Boeing’s twin-engine F/A-18Super Hornet and EA-18 Growler is an uprated suc-cessor model derived from General Electric’s F404engine. MTU produces the high-pressure spool andthe high-pressure and low-pressure turbine shroudhangers as well as other parts for the powerhouse.

J79Single-spool, reheated 79–83-kN turbojet. The J79was the first engine to have variable compressorvanes. It powers the Boeing (formerly MDC) F-4Phantom. It is repaired at MTU under the coopera-tion with the German Air Force.

RB199Three-spool, reheated 70–73-kN turbofan. TheRB199 is the world’s only engine sporting an inte-grated thrust reverser. The Tornado engines aremaintained at MTU under the cooperation with theGerman Air Force.

F110Afterburning turbofan engine rated at 120–142-kNof thrust. GE Aviation’s engine, which has been inservice since 1986, is among the most successfulpropulsion systems in its class. It powers the F-15and F-16 fighter aircraft. It uses the same coredesign as the F101, but provides significantly morepower. MTU contributes two fan disks to the F110.

F404Afterburning turbofan engine rated at 47–81-kN.The F404 counts among the standard powerplantsfor advanced combat aircraft and is used, for exam-ple, on the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet or Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk. MTU produces the high-pressurecompressor spool.

F117Two-shaft turbofan engine in the 171–195-kNthrust range. The engine powers the C-17 Globe-master. MTU’s production share includes the low-pressure turbine and other components.
