Top DLSU reSearcher Dr. MichaeL angeLo proMenTiLLa,

fULL profeSSor of The cheMicaL engineering DeparTMenT,

was recognized as the 2017 Distinguished Alumnus in Socio-

environmental Engineering by the University of the Philippines

Los Baños (UPLB) College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial

Technology Alumni Association in a ceremony held

last October 9.

Promentilla has consistently produced outstanding research,

receiving awards and recognition from different award-giving

bodies, both local and international. He is a recipient

of the CHED Republica Award and NAST Outstanding Young

Scientist. He also received the St. Miguel Febres Cordero Pillar

of Lasallian Excellence Award in Research in this year’s Pillar

Awards.

DLSU coMpUTer engineering MajorS eMergeD aS chaMpionS in the

2017 Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines Challenge-Regional

Qualifiers. The competition was held last October 7 at the Technological

Institute of the Philippines.

DLSU was declared champion in the Quiz Bowl, 2nd Runner-up in the

Programming Contest, and 4th place in the Logic Circuit Breadboarding

Competition.

The Quiz Bowl members are Fae Nicole Serrano (team captain), Rainiell

Bacani, and Jeremy Chan. The Programming Challenge team is composed

of Patrick Chan and Maverick Rivera, while the Logic Circuit Breadboarding

Challenge team members are Mac Excel Fallar and Janssen Co.

ACCESS president Iman Sta. Maria served as their team manager. The

students were mentored by Electronics and Communications Engineering

(ECE) faculty members Dr. Argel Bandala, Engr. John Anthony Jose, and

Jay Robert del Rosario.

In another development, a team of ECE students won 1st Runner-up last

September 29 in the Regional Qualifiers of the Institute of Electronics and

Communications Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP) Quizbowl.

The IECEP Regional Quizbowl is an annual quiz bee competition hosted

by IECEP, which serves as the qualifiers for the national quizbowl. The quiz

bee focuses on four areas of ECE: mathematics, electronics engineering,

general engineering and applied sciences, and communications

engineering.

Members of the team are: Malcolm Kwok, Jethro Ocean, Gideon Ong, and

Grant Bulaong. The coaches are ECE faculty members Dr. Argel Bandala,

Engr. John Anthony Jose, and Engr. Martin Maningo.

Both the winning teams from Computer Engineering and ECE will compete

in the national level.

The proMoTion of MenTaL heaLTh awareneSS anD reSiLience among

members of the Lasallian community through its annual caravan, themed

“Happy Mind, Happy Life.”

The month-long campaign of OCCS this October has sought to contribute

to the reduction of risk factors by creating a culture of empathy and reaching

out for help. Part of the campaign is to enhance the referral and support

system among members of the Lasallian community for those who may

need professional help.

OCCS collaborated with the psychiatrists of Medical City in this endeavor

and, in one of its activities, invited the Father of Filipino Psychiatry,

Dr. Cornelio Banaag, Jr., to serve as resource speaker.

The inTernaTionaL STUDieS DeparTMenT of De La SaLLe

UniverSiTy anD The nagoya UniverSiTy aLUMni aSSociaTion–

phiLippineS (nUaL-ph) hosted a series of lectures with the theme,

“Global development and human security: Perspectives from education,

health, and labor studies,” held last October 14 at the Animo Labs of the

DLSU Henry Sy, Sr. Hall.

Among the main lectures were: “Facing educational

inequities across the globe” by Dr. Takayo Ogisu of

the Graduate School of International Development

of Nagoya University; “The Impacts of HIV and AIDS

research: The Philippines in spotlight” by

Dr. Neil Tan Gana of the Department of Biology

of Ateneo de Manila University; and “Typology of

Returning Migrant Workers” by Brenalyn Peji of the

Institute of Labor Studies of the Department of Labor

and Employment.

The activity also served as a venue to promote:

Japanese government scholarships; the NUAL-PH,

which is headed by University Fellow Dr. Pag-Asa

Gaspillo; and the International Studies Department’s

25th anniversary.

NUAL-PH is envisioned as a pivotal branch of NUAL for cooperation,

support, participation and exchange of information in industry, research,

and education, as well as in bridging friendship and collaboration among

alumni members of other NUAL branches.

De La SaLLe UniverSiTy haS More Than 2,500 pUbLicaTionS

in The ScopUS DaTabaSe aS of ThiS ocTober. Of the total, 269

were indexed in 2017.

The figure shows the University’s consistent record as the most

productive research institution in the country.

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-

reviewed literature: scientific journals, books, and conference

proceedings. Elsevier describes Scopus as “delivering a

comprehensive overview of the world’s research output in the

fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts

and humanities. Scopus features smart tools to track, analyze, and

visualize research.”

Always bent on pursuing excellence in service, Dr. Wilfrido Villacorta, Professor Emeritus of International Relations, currently keeps himself busy finishing his book on ASEAN.

Dr. Villacorta served as DLSU Dean of Liberal Arts and Senior Vice President. As Dean, he strengthened the faculty of the academic departments and launched the International Studies program. As Senior Vice President for External Affairs, he managed the University’s public relations programs, expanded faculty and student exchange, and raised funds for scholarships, professorial chairs, and research and teaching facilities.

He finished his bachelor’s degree at the University of the Philippines and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Politics, major in International Law and Relations, at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

In 1976, he organized and was designated as Secretary of the first Philippine delegation of educators to China.

He was one of the 48 appointees of the late President Corazon Aquino to the 1986 Constitutional Commission, which was mandated to frame the present Constitution.

In 2003, he was endorsed by then President Gloria Arroyo as the first ASEAN Filipino Deputy Secretary General. He became the Philippine ambassador and permanent representative to ASEAN in 2010, during the time of former President Benigno Aquino III.

Purvis, Emeritus Professor of the University of Portsmouth in UK, was

honored for his significant achievements in his field, particularly in the areas

of energy and environmental engineering.

He has been influential in building the research capacity and research

culture in the Gokongwei College of Engineering (GCOE). He led the local

team from DLSU’s Center for Engineering and Sustainable Development

Research to secure multi-year foreign grants from The British Council and

the European Commission to support international mobility of DLSU and

foreign faculty.

This program produced numerous Filipino PhDs, many of whom are now

distinguished scientists at DLSU and the Philippines. The British Council

grant also led to the establishment of the MS and MEng Environmental

Engineering and Management programs, based on benchmarks with a

similar program at the University of Portsmouth.

He established an international network of academic researchers and

industry users in the field of energy and environment, creating a strong

synergy between theory and application. Furthermore, he solidified the

pioneering area of life cycle assessment (LCA) research in the Philippines

and the Asian region, and advocated for climate change awareness long

before it became a mainstream sustainability issue.

The GCOE prepared a lecture series on sustainability in his honor. Aside

from Purvis whose talk is titled “A Candle for Sustainable Development”, the

other speakers include: Academician and University Fellow Dr. Alvin Culaba

on “LAB to HUB: Algae Research at DLSU”; Dr. Aristotle Ubando on “Life

Cycle Assessment of Algae Biofuels in the Philippines”; Dr. Luis Razon

on “The New Life Cycle of Reactive Nitrogen”; and Dr. Jose Bienvenido

Manuel Biona on “Life Cycle Assessment for Sustainable Transport”.
