How to Create a Research Dossier and Gather Data for this Project Using Evernote
1
ENGL 317 (ISI) Project 5
What is Evernote?• Evernote is a digital notebook and
workspace.
• You will use it for this project by creating a notebook to hold excerpts from sources and your analysis notes.
• If you have never used Evernote before, it's easy to learn.

You will need to:• Create a notebook, and title it Research Dossier.
• Gather data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics into your dossier.
• The next few slides will show you how to do that.
10
Data you will need.• You will need to gather information about
employment in the United States at the:
• National-level • And• Two other state-levels.
Focused Research Questions• Before you start to gather data, you will need to
develop focused research questions.
• To do that, decide if you want to take a broad focus or a narrow one.
• A broad focus looks at the employment outlook for a specific field.
• A narrow focus looks at a specific job within a field.
Example: Broad Focus
• What are the types of jobs available in civil engineering?
• What is the future employment outlook in civil engineering?
• What is the location quotient for jobs in civil engineering?
NOTE: A location quotient is a way of identifying how concentrated a particular industry or occupation is in a given area.
Example of a narrow focus
• What do technical writers do?• How much do technical writers earn?• What is their work environment like?• How can I become a technical writer?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has a wealth of statistical and other information that will give you the employment outlook for a broad or a narrow focus.
The next few slides have tips about how to use the site.
Here are a list of subjects from the subject tab to explore.
The occupational handbook is a very useful part of the site to get information about specific jobs.
It is accessed through the publications tab.
The Occupational Employment Statistics will give you statistical data about employment projections. It is accessed under the subjects' tab.
It allows you to search by state. Note: may certainly use any charts you find here as MODELS, but you must create the required graphics yourself.
Here is a national map that is interactive. You click on a state and it gives you statistical information.
And this is just a small portion of the information that’s available here, so it’s easy to get quickly overwhelmed.
To keep yourself from getting overwhelmed, concentrate on getting answers to the questions you developed.
The next few slides show you examples from a notebook I created in Evernote.
So, here is my Evernote workspace. I’m using the APP, and I’m also on a Mac.
Your workspace might look a bit different.
I’m going to take a few screenshots to show you how the clipping feature works. I’m in the Ocupational Outlook Handbook, and I’ve done a search for technical writers, so I want to clip this page and save to evernote.
Then I clipped this page about technical writers into a Note and moved it to my notebook.
At the bottom of this page is a suggested citation, so I was careful to grab that when I clipped the page.
Most pages on the site will have a suggested citation, but if not, consider using a citation generator.
When you are using a citation generator for a government website like this type in the full name of where you are at.
Then copy and paste into your note.
So, now I’m ready to make a few notes if needed to help me with how I’m going to use this information in the white paper.
The nice thing about working with a tool like Evernote is how it allows you to clip plenty of information, take notes and organize it, so you are working efficiently.
How much of this data will you need?
You need enough data to answer your focused research questions and enough statistical data to make comparisons at the national and two other state levels.
