Description:
Recently, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center turned to us to write and design their 2011 Stewardship Report. They challenged us to help convey the human side of giving — to talk about the patients whose lives are transformed and the generous donors who make this healing work possible. One of the most touching stories came from Joel Rothstein who wanted to honor his wife Maureen’s valiant fight against breast cancer. Mr. Rothstein established a fund that provides wigs to women undergoing chemotherapy. Thanks to that fund, a young woman named Saida Ayala was able to walk down the aisle on her wedding day feeling great and looking beautiful. Each of the Report's moving stories was matched with highly personal, black-and-white patient portraits by photographer Matt Rainey. The images gave the report a distinctive look and visually captured the strength of these extraordinary people.

We are pleased to present the 2011 Stewardship Report of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation. This year’s report tells the

remarkable story of how generous individuals, foundations, corporations and organizations have chosen to support our mission, and how that

support has directly impacted the patients we care for.

Since its founding 124 years ago, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (EHMC) has grown from a small community hospital into a

comprehensive diagnostic and treatment facility, garnering countless national awards. While these honors attest to our leadership position in

the medical community, what makes EHMC even more distinctive is our commitment to humanistic and compassionate care.

We don’t treat “patients,” we don’t solve “cases.” Rather, we help people and their families when they need help the most. The words of the

individuals in the following pages are at the heart of what we are about: it is your support that makes all of what we do possible, and for that,

we offer thanks.

This report will introduce you to four people who have benefited from your generosity. They embody the larger story of all of those who

received exceptional care at EHMC. You will also meet four of your fellow donors, who explain why they feel support of EHMC is so important.

Everyone at EHMC, from our physicians and nurses to employees, administrators and staff, all share a common commitment to healthcare

excellence. This is our promise to the people we serve, and to those whose support makes our work possible.

That support, your support, makes the difference.

thanks to you

With Gratitude

For more than 20 years, the Strahl family has supported EHMC. According to Ellen Strahl, the motivation behind this commitment is as strong today as when her family moved to New Jersey in the 1980’s.

From the perspective of the Strahl family, it is the people of EHMC who make the difference. That difference is found in the knowledge, empathy and understanding they bring to patient care.

“We all say ‘thank you’ so much, maybe shake a hand or give a hug to the doctors and nurses who have brought a life into this world or saved a loved one. Still, is that really enough to show the thanks that’s in your heart? I feel, as does my family, that we all can do so much in giving back and paying it forward to show our true thanks and appreciation.”

Another factor behind the Strahl family’s continuing support is EHMC’s reputation as a community resource, always standing ready to help its neighbors. Making a donation is a tangible way of supporting these essential efforts. “It is a way to say ‘thank you’ for their compassionate and quality care, and the professional expertise they have shown to my family and to everyone in the community who comes through the door.”

Ellen Strahl is passionate about getting the message out to the wider community that their support is important too. “I hope, by setting this example, others will follow me by donating however much that they can.”

We give because: “Eventually everyone in their lifetime seeks medical care for minor or major problems, and that’s how our

relationship began with this incredible institution.”

Wistrem Rivera will never forget the party he went to on New Year’s Eve 2011, even though he can’t actually remember much of what happened that night. Just after midnight, he suffered a thoracic aortic aneurysm or TAA.

“I had a blood vessel near the heart that was swollen, and starting to bleed. Only I didn’t know it. I sat down at the kitchen table, and that’s the last thing I remember. Later, everyone told me they thought I was sleeping. But they couldn’t wake me up. My nephew got me to the car and brought me to the Emergency Room.

“I needed eight hours of surgery, but I made it.”

For a time it was touch and go, but EHMC’s world-class cardiac team has decades of experience. “My doctor said it was a good thing I was brought here. Another hour, and I might not have made it.”

As he made his recovery, Wistrem leaned on EHMC’s nurses, literally and figuratively. “They told me, ‘You’ve got to try to get up, you’ve got to try to walk.’ And I thought, ‘This is great.’ Then I tried and my body felt so heavy. At first I could hardly move.

“If I didn’t have somebody holding me, I couldn’t walk... The nurses helped me walk down the hall, one on each side.”

Not surprisingly, when anyone asks Wistrem what hospital he would recommend, he immediately tells them EHMC. “You get the best care here. Have confidence and trust, because they will take care of you here.”

thanks to you ... my wedding day

was everything I dreamed.

Saida Ayala4

thanks to you

I give because: “I remember how traumatic it was with my wife losing her hair when she started chemo. What better way

to pay tribute to her than to designate the contribution to provide wigs for breast cancer patients?”

As a bride’s wedding day approaches, her “to-do” list is often longer than the guest list. Saida Ayala, however, had a special concern. Diagnosed with breast cancer, she started chemotherapy at EHMC just five weeks before her wedding day.

Wedding days are all about pictures. As a side effect of her treatment, Saida was losing her hair. Understandably, she was anxious. She shared her concerns with a nurse from the EHMC Patient Navigator Program. “When I mentioned my wedding day was coming up, everyone moved very quickly to help.”

EHMC has a special program that provides wigs to women undergoing chemotherapy. “Thanks to Englewood, I was able to find a wig that was right for me and I looked beautiful on my wedding day. No one even noticed it was a wig!” Saida was able to have the wedding of her dreams, dancing the night away with her new husband, Jorge.

“Throughout my experience at Englewood Hospital, I was treated with a lot of love and a lot of respect. That gave me the hope to persevere and believe things would be OK. When I finished chemotherapy, they sang a song for me, ‘Congratulations to you, Congratulations to you’ and gave me a cake! Englewood Hospital was really a blessing to me. I will forever be indebted.”

Saida feels especially grateful for the donors who make possible EHMC’s vital support services, including free wigs for the underserved. “When I was in chemotherapy, I saw all the different emotions that women went through as they lost their hair. It has a profound impact on a woman to lose her hair. I am very thankful, not just for me but for all the other women, too. I was able to look lovely on my wedding day. So, ‘thank you.’”

Joel Rothstein wanted his wife of 30 years, Maureen, and her valiant fight against breast cancer to be remembered. “She battled the disease for a little bit more than five years. She maintained a smile through the most difficult periods of time. I just don’t understand how.”

After being diagnosed, Maureen Rothstein was treated at The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center. “She was part of a clinical trial for a miracle drug,” recalls Joel. The treatment allowed her to go places and do things that otherwise might have been impossible. Like attend the wedding of their son, James, in August 2010.

Joel is an executive in the garment industry. “During the holiday time, I give a gift to charity in the name of my employees and in the name of the people I do business with. Prior to my wife passing away, I made Englewood Hospital the recipient.”

Because of chemotherapy, Maureen lost much of her hair. So, for their son’s wedding, she wore a wig. This gave Joel an idea. He would make a donation to The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center so that other women undergoing chemotherapy could be provided wigs.

“I didn’t want to give a gift that would be forgotten. I remember how traumatic it was with my wife losing her hair when she started chemo. What better way to pay tribute to her than to designate the contribution to provide wigs for breast cancer patients?”

The mission of the Y.C. Ho/Helen and Michael Chiang Foundation is to improve the quality of life for adults and children with serious illnesses. The Foundation is a continuing supporter of EHMC’s Palliative Care Program.

EHMC’s Palliative Care Program is a consulting service for patients and families that encompasses symptom management, psychosocial support, grief and bereavement counseling, discharge planning and/or long-term care planning.

It is appropriate for people of any age, and at any stage in an illness, whether that illness is curable, chronic or life threatening. Emphasis is placed on pain and symptom management, communication and coordinated care. The overall goal is to improve the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses.

The support of the Ho/Chiang Foundation has helped EHMC to provide humanistic, Palliative Care to patients and families by supporting the use of integrative medicine and clinical staff education and training.

The Foundation helped make possible a 12% year-on-year increase in Palliative Care inpatient consultations in 2011. It also helped underwrite a six-month internship program in Palliative Care for Nurse Practitioner students at EHMC.

The Y.C. Ho/Helen and Michael Chiang Foundation

We give because: “Many people mistakenly believe that Palliative Care is only for patients with an incurable illness or at the end of

life. In fact, it is appropriate from the time of diagnosis and can be provided along with curative treatment.”

Joseph Mulligan was a sick man, a very sick man. Initially, he was in the EHMC Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Then he was transferred to the Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU). That was followed by six hours of cardiac surgery.

Joanne Mulligan, Joseph’s wife, was by his side every day. “They had him on a feeding tube, respirator, dialysis… you name it.”

Palliative Care is an essential component of treatment at EHMC, providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of a serious illness, whatever their diagnosis. Palliative Care is often referred to as “comfort care,” because keeping patients comfortable is a primary goal. Yet it also brings comfort and reassurance to families as well.

For the Mulligan family, comfort came in the presence of EHMC’s Nurse Practitioners. “My daughter and I had a conference in the very beginning. The nurse explained what might happen, and asked what we wanted to do. I noticed that when they handled him, they were always so gentle. And they spoke to him so softly.”

For a patient’s family, the stress can sometimes be overwhelming. Palliative Care can provide them with greater peace of mind. “I knew he was in good hands, even if I couldn’t be there all day long.”

Joseph Mulligan spent almost three weeks in the CTICU, and Joanne was grateful. “Those people are marvelous. I even wrote a note to the Director of Nursing. I sent cookies to all of them. I just couldn’t do enough to express my appreciation. They were wonderful, wonderful, that’s all I can say.”

Carol Riley

thanks to you ... I got the answers

I needed.

8

Businessman E. Rae Jo has a strong, personal connection to EHMC. In fact, EHMC has played an important role in his life, and that of his family, for more than two decades.

“I have three children. Two were born at Englewood Hospital. That was 23 years ago, and 20 years ago. And of course, I live in this community. I always felt that Englewood Hospital was something I could fall back on if I had a problem.”

Which is exactly what happened to him this past December, when he went to the Emergency Department. “It was something silly, an inner ear problem. I remember the Emergency Room from 20 years ago. Now it’s quite different!”

In addition to his personal experiences, community members shared with him their stories about EHMC. “Here is the way I see it. This is our Hospital. It serves the people in our community. If I can afford to help, I think I should do so.

“I’m a Korean-American. I came here about 27 years ago. I hope my gift serves as an example of investing in the future. And I hope others take note and do the same. Englewood Hospital is a part of our community. We can’t do without it.”

thanks to you

I give because: “Englewood Hospital is a part of our community. We can’t do without it.”

For 25 years, Carol Riley taught at Lindbergh Elementary School in Palisades Park. Late last year she said “good-bye” to her students, and began what she hoped would be an active retirement. Then suddenly, she felt intense pain in her abdomen. It just didn’t stop. It only got worse. Admitted to EHMC, she was scheduled for an MRI scan.

Carol remembers that day vividly. “I was apprehensive about having it done. This MRI was going to be lengthy. But the technician reassured me. He was wonderful. He could tell I was nervous. For every picture, he told me the approximate time it would take. He constantly asked me, ‘Are you OK?’ which was great, especially in a situation where I didn’t know what was wrong with me.”

This wasn’t Carol’s first MRI. Unfortunately, her previous experiences elsewhere were not good. “They tell you they are going to talk to you, and they don’t. You’re in this tunnel thing and you don’t even know if they can hear you. It was scary.

“It’s so different at Englewood. The MRI technician was great, he really was.”

Once Carol’s doctor reviewed her scans, he was able to make a diagnosis and begin treatment. Carol was so happy about her experience at EHMC that she wrote a letter to the Hospital administration. Then, a few days later, her niece came to visit. It turned out she had been a patient at Englewood Hospital.

“My niece said, ‘Aunt Carol, I had an MRI there and I had the exact same experience.’ So that department must be very good.”

Volunteers and Their Four-Legged Friends Walk for Awareness

Englewood Hospital Foundation’s annual Walk for Awareness and The Susan Lucianna Memorial Dog Walk was a rousing success with participants helping to raise more than $100,000 for breast cancer awareness and services at Englewood Hospital. The 5K Walk featured WABC-TV news anchor Lori Stokes as its honorary chairwoman and Lexus of Englewood as the Title Sponsor.

The 5K Walk was founded in 1999 by Paul Fader and his wife, Jill, after her successful treatment for breast cancer. Proceeds benefit The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital and allow women in our community with limited or no health coverage to receive vital, life-saving mammograms, genetic testing and other screening and diagnostic services. In addition, Walk for Awareness funds help purchase advanced technology to enhance the early detection of breast cancer.

A picture-perfect autumn day was the backdrop for the EHMC Foundation’s 2011 Golf Classic at Alpine Country Club. The excitement kicked into high-gear when Marc Blatt (picture below) won the $10,000 Putting Contest and IJ Choi (pictured kneeling left) sunk a hole-in-one to win a new Infiniti! The event raised more than $200,000 to further the humanistic, patient-centered care for which the Medical Center is so well known.

The Breakfast Club hosts Buddy Valastro and Sarah Wallace

The EHMC Foundation’s Breakfast Club hosted two successful events in 2011. In March, a sell-out crowd of 250 people met Buddy Valastro (pictured top center), of the hit television series Cake Boss, at Alpine Country Club in Demarest. Buddy delighted everyone with stories about his home life and adventures in his bake shop. Funds raised by the event supported the Women’s Cardiac Health Center, where women take a proactive approach to fighting cardiac disease.

In October, more than 100 guests gathered at Montammy Golf Club in Alpine to hear guest-speaker Sarah Wallace. A reporter with WABC-TV Eyewitness News, Wallace offered insight into the exciting world of investigative journalism. Proceeds from the event benefited the Oncology Program. Pictured bottom are Breakfast Club members with Sarah Wallace.

Andiamo Benefit Run comes through again for EHMC

Now in its 12th year, the Andiamo Benefit Motorcycle Run continues to attract an enthusiastic crowd. Nearly 1,000 motorcycle riders participated in its most recent installment, taking in the sights along scenic Rt. 9W and the George Washington Bridge.

The Andiamo Benefit Run is organized each year by Don Dickstein, owner of Andiamo Restaurant in Haworth and an EHMC Foundation Trustee, together with his family. The Run has raised almost $300,000 in funds for the Medical Center.
