Spoken Text 1 – Question 1 Today on LIFE STORIES, our guest is Ben Clifford, a Tasmanian children’s book illustrator who loves the simple things in life – a roast chicken, time spent outdoors or wandering through the bookshops of Hobart.

Interviewer: Good morning Ben and welcome to the program.

Ben: Thank you for inviting me.

Interviewer: To start with, what do you think is the best thing about Hobart?

Ben: Well, there are three things I like best: the air isn’t dirty, the city isn’t large and the wilderness isn’t far away. Also, you can always buy really good quality fresh produce. I also like the fact that my suburb has a great sense of community, much like the rest of Tasmania.

Interviewer: And the worst?

Ben: The homeless sleeping on the street or people generally struggling; it’s a problem most people don’t understand. St Vincent De Paul’s food van does great work distributing meals six days a week at nine Hobart locations. Anyone can donate food or cash to their kitchen on Argyle Street.

Interviewer: That’s a great suggestion. Now, tell us a little about your work.

Ben: I write and illustrate children’s books and I’m currently working for Starfish Bay Publishing who are based in Adelaide. I gave up almost everything to pursue my dream. It took six years to sign my first deal but it was worth it in the end.

Interviewer: Where’s your favourite place to eat?

Ben: I love barbeques or packing a picnic and heading outdoors. Restaurants…hmm...I enjoy eating at the State Cinema. The food is good and reasonably priced and of course, there are always lots of great movies to see and I absolutely love the bookshop. As for take away food, I’d have to say either Indian or Italian.

Interviewer: What do you love doing when you are not working?

Ben: Trying new recipes, turning the music up and drawing and writing down ideas that may become a children’s book. I’m always thinking about the next project and starting to plan it. I never stop thinking; it sometimes drives me and others crazy. I also like various outdoor activities like kayaking or running and I love hunting through second hand bookshops and the occasional visit to MONA (thank you for free entry Mr Walsh). When I can make time, I paint large works on canvas and put on random public exhibitions around Tasmania.

Interviewer: Let’s finish with one piece of advice that you can give our listeners about following their dreams.

Ben: Don’t wait for your dreams to find you! Go out and look for them and make them happen!

Interviewer: That’s wonderful advice and all the very best for your next book.

Ben: Thanks!

Spoken Text 2 – Question 2

The “glass ceiling” should be broken

The glass ceiling is an invisible but real barrier to advancement in a profession and affects the pay and equality of working women. For this reason, women and men should receive equal pay and have equal career opportunities.

Currently women, who have worked long hours and achieved results, are being paid less than their male colleagues. Federal Government research shows that even at the most senior levels of business, women are not receiving equal pay for the same work. Only 7% of the top-earning positions in the top 200 Australian companies are held by women. Female chief officers earn half the wage of their male counterparts and female executives earn up to 43% less than men doing the same job. The pay gap is evidence that the glass ceiling continues to exist. Male graduates earn a higher starting salary and their salaries continue to increase at a greater rate than women’s.

Addressing gender equality will benefit Australian companies in a number of ways. Firstly, in relation to staff commitment, job satisfaction increases productivity for a company with a strong policy of fairness and gender equality. Secondly, if staff feel valued and enjoy their job, they are more likely to stay with the company. Thirdly, the number of costly and time-consuming complaints against the company can be avoided.

In conclusion, equal pay and equal career opportunities are vital for the success of business. Companies and business owners should be encouraged to give the women of Australia a fair go in return for their strong contribution to our economy. In the 21st century, breaking the glass ceiling will guarantee a fairer society for women and men.

Lost in the Outback

Every year thousands of overseas tourists flock to the Australian outback in search of

adventure. Yet many are ill prepared for the dangers of these remote regions and put

themselves at risk of harrowing experiences. In fact, some have even died and those who

survive have remarkable tales to tell.

One of these stories is about two American tourists travelling in the north of Western

Australia, where many of the roads are dirt. In the dry season, they are rough, dusty and

full of potholes. After the torrential rain and flooding of the wet season, most are

impassable. The region is sparsely inhabited, and travellers can move through the region

for days without seeing a person.

The American tourists ventured into isolated country south of Halls Creek in a rented two-

wheel drive campervan. It was already the wet season and just days before their trip a

Category 4 cyclone had ripped along the northern coastline turning dirt roads into

quagmires and creeks into flooded crossings.

Only 100 kilometres from Halls Creek, the men crashed their small campervan when they

hit a pothole in the middle of a flooded creek. The van was partly submerged in the water

and had almost overturned. They were devastated but hopeful about getting help because,

luckily, they had brought a warning beacon with them. However, they had been advised not

to set it off unless it was a dire emergency.

Although tourists are strictly advised to stay with their vehicles in these situations, these

travellers did not heed the warning. Joe, the elder of the two, set off into the bush to find

help, taking only a litre of water and the emergency warning beacon. Not long after he left

the vehicle he became completely disoriented and with no compass or maps, had no idea

in which direction he was headed. When night fell, panic took over and he began to fear for

his life. The next morning he tried to retrace his steps back to the stranded vehicle but

couldn’t. He had also run out of water. It was then he knew that this was a real

emergency.

He finally decided to activate his emergency beacon. The electronic signal was picked up

by emergency services in Canberra and a search plane was sent to find the vehicle. The

search area was so enormous that a small vehicle could easily have been missed by

search and rescue teams. Luckily for these men the rescue plane found the campervan

and Joe – who was actually only a few kilometres from the vehicle – within a few hours.

Suffering severe sunburn and badly blistered feet, the men praised the emergency

authorities for their rescue. However, Sergeant Tom Stafford from the Kununurra Police

says he is totally fed up with tourists who haven’t done their homework before travelling into

the outback.

Question 4

Read the passage and answer in ENGLISH the questions that follow using the information

from the text.

Technology – Blessing or Curse?

We are living in a world of digital communication. Social media, smart phones and emails

enable us to communicate in many ways. However, being connected 24/7 through digital

devices reduces our connection with ourselves and quality in personal communication with

others. This is not to mention all the constant distraction that they create for us if not used

wisely.

All the beeps, dings, rings and buzzes that come from our smart phones are distractions,

and they have an impact on our performance and our lives. Experts say when we hear

these noises, it produces mental and physical reactions. Our heart rate goes up and if we

don’t check the device to see what’s going on, our anxiety response is going to remain until

we check what the notification was for. This gradually creates a habit in us, the habit of self-

distraction and checking our phone frequently, even when it is not beeping.

Being distracted is totally normal. However, this new age of digital communication provides

more distraction for our mind to such a level that it affects our lives. Here is the main

problem: being constantly distracted decreases our focus and lowers our productivity. It is

not possible to finish a task efficiently and effortlessly when we are distracted frequently

because this adds to our stress.

Mindfulness is Powerful

The good news is that there are simple things that we can do to remain in control of our

mind, our usage of technology and the quality of our lives. Mindfulness is one of the most

effective ways. Mindfulness is a mental discipline that trains our mind to learn to remain in

the present moment. There are thousands of research studies that confirm the positive

benefits of mindfulness in our health, well-being and our lives. Increased focus, reduced

stress, enhanced immune system, better sleep and enhanced happiness are amongst the

many benefits of mindfulness. It’s due to these amazing benefits that mindfulness has

become trendy in the past few years.

Having a daily mindfulness routine is an efficient way to keep your mind calm and slow

down the endless traffic of thoughts in your mind. It might even encourage you to spend

less time waiting for your smart phone to beep and wondering what your friends are posting

online.
