Batam Island
Identification
Batam is one of the largest islands in the Riau archipelago, and not long
ago it was just another poor island with coastal villages and unspoiled
nature. The declaration of the Batam free trade zone in 1989 has turned
the island upside down, after just a few years of rapid construction it
now has a modern airport, tourist and business centers and a still
growing infrastructure that has changed the island completely.
Description Batam Island is famous for its spectacular beaches on the north
coast. Batam is about 20 kilometer south of Singapore and it is one of
the fastest growing parts of Riau Islands. Batam became popular with
weekend visitors from Singapore.
More than 1.2 million tourists visit Batam each year; it is more than any
other place in Indonesia other than Bali. There are more than half a
dozen international standard golf courses in Batam Island. Some of the
courses are converted into Golf and Beach Resort like Palm Springs,
which offer golf and other resorts services. Palm Springs also own
private white sandy beach.
Batam Island is famous for its seafood. Seafood is easily available as
there are number of restaurants. Tourist can try mountain biking,
trekking or leisurely boats cruise in the untouched southern islands of
Galang and Rempang.

Batam Island has an International Airport (Hang Nadim International
Airport) with flights daily from major cities in Indonesia.
If you come from Singapore you can visit Batam Island by ferry. You
can take the ferry from Singapore's World Trade Centre or Tanah Merah
Ferry Terminal.
It takes approximately 25 minutes to an hour depending on your
destination, which may be Batu Ampar, Nongsapura, Sekupang or
Waterfront City.
Electronics is Batam's largest economic sector followed by oil service /
construction and ship repair. Batam is a safe place for foreign visitors;
approximately 1.2 million foreign visitors come each year.
Batam is one of Indonesia's wealthiest city.
Climate
May and September are warm and pleasant seasons while the rainy
season is between October and April.
Average temperature of the day in coastal areas varies from 28C to 30C.
The weather is pleasant between May to September in Batam.

Palembang on _____ Sumatra Island. The Musi River, which is also known as the Palembang
River, passes through it by making two parts of it. As the stream forms the heart of the city, so a
lot of transportation takes place through water.
The houses along the banks _____ of piles and are facing the water. The banks of Musi _____
with water at regular intervals. Palembang is also 'Venice of the East' and from ancient times it
is an important trade city between India and China.
When one decides to visit this city, a thought of the origin of the name may flash in the mind!
The name of the city is perhaps _____ from the word 'Limbang', which means 'panning for
alluvial gold'.
People still dive in Musi for gold. There is another myth that says the following: When
emissaries _____ from the great kingdom of Majapahit to develop a colony on the East Coast of
Sumatra, the ship sank near the mouth of the Musi. All that remained, which was a cargo of
coconut, had to be used to reach the goal, so the coconut was cleft into two halves.

places in them two by two. So they sailed up the river, lurching (limbang-limbang) through the
rippling of the water, and finally they reached a place, which they dubbed Palimbang, and with

Taxis are very common in the capital and can be flagged down easily. Prices are
excellent and the meter is usually employed without a gentle nudge.
It may also be a good idea to hire cars or motorbikes on Lombok. This is an inexpensive
way to get out and see the island. However, make sure that the vehicle is roadworthy;
and please - watch out for roaming cows and goats.
