The White House Garden

During World War II, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt led

the war effort on the home front by establishing a victory garden

at the White House. Nearly six decades later, another vegetable

garden has sprouted on White House grounds to promote Lady

Michelle Obama’s cause of reducing childhood obesity by

encouraging youngsters to eat a healthy diet loaded with fresh

fruits and vegetables.

Fifth graders from Bancroft Elementary School in

Washington, which has had its own garden since 2001, have

helped Mrs. Obama dig and tend the garden and harvest

the produce. The students also work with chefs in the White

House kitchen to prepare and cook what they’ve grown. Some

food from the garden finds its way into formal White House

dinners and the Obama’s family meals; the rest is donated to

a local kitchen that serves the homeless.

The garden features 55 varieties of vegetables, some from seeds handed down from the

nation’s third president, Thomas Jefferson. All are grown organically, fertilized with White House

compost. Beneficial insects, such as ladybugs and mantises, help control pests.

Mrs. Obama, who notes that the project was inspired in part by her desire to improve her own

children’s diet, says, “The Garden is an important introduction to what I hope will be a new way that

our country thinks about food.”

15

Home: Personal Description

My home is a small house in a new development. It was built by my father. The house has three

bedrooms: a large one for my parents and two smaller bedrooms for my brother and me. In my

have a window in my room that looks out over our garden. It’s a small garden, but we can grow all

our own vegetables.

Neighborhood: Personal Description

My father and my mother live in my hometown, Burdur. In fact, my entire family- aunts, uncles,

grandparents, everyone- lives in Burdur. We’ve lived there for over six generation. We know

everyone in the area so when we sit outside, it is like being in our living room with our very large

family. We live across the street from a park. My family spends a lot of time sitting in this park

talking to neighbors and relatives.

I’m fascinated by the natural world.

Hobby (Example 2)

I like to play the guitar. I took lessons when I was child. Some friends and I had a rock band once, a

long time ago. We played at parties. Now I mostly play on my own at home, and sometimes I get

My House

I live in a small house. It have five rooms: there are two bedrooms, a leaving room, a bathroom, and a kitchen. Indeed it is a small house; but I like living in here for wasting my spare time.

When the door open, I can see the living room. It is so small with only three chair and a table, nothing else. I prefer reading a novel in this room.

My bedroom is in the left side of the living room. In this room, there is a night table next to the bed, a

TV, a radio, and a computer. When being bored of reading, I usually plays online games, chatt with my friends via Facebook and so on. Next to my bedroom is my mother's. I do not know what is insede

because I never come in to see it. In the right side of the living room, there is the keetchen. In the kitchen, I have everything I need when I get hunger. It is very pleasure when my mother cooks, the smell fills

my whole house. I know it is a very small house; but it is the best place I have ever seen.

My Family

My family has four members: those are I, my sister, and parents of course.

My mother is 47 years old. His name's Anisa. She's thin-faced and she's got long, blond hair and beautiful green eye. She is still slim because she always try to stay in shape. She is very good-looking,

always well-dress and elegant.

My father, Lukman, was 5 years older than my mother. He is 52. In spite of his age, he's still black-

haired, with several grey hairs. He has braight blue eyes. He is quite tall, but a bit shorter than me.

He's very hard-working. Besides that he is working in a travel company. He can even make a dinner when my mother is outside. His cooking and his meals are always very tasty as well as my mothers'.

Finally, my sister Nadina. She is 22. She is also red-haired and green-eyed. She has long wavy hair and freckles. She is definitely shorter than me. She is rather introverted. But she is very sensible,

smart and co-operative. Right now she is studying English and also know Arabic and Mandarin. I

want to be so smart as she is.

They all, except me, speaks Sundanese very well, because we were living in Bandung for 5 years. My

sister have been going to primary school there. Unfortunately I was only 3 when we were leaving to Jakarta, so I can't speak Sundanese. Now we are happily living in Jakarta.

MY SPHYNX CAT

My Sphynx cat is the only pet I has. He has a little hair but is not totally hairless as he have a

peach fuzz over much of his body. His coat is ofen a warm chamois. My Sphynx has a

normal cat proportion.

I am like his tail although my mom say that it is like a rat tails. I loved his usual color

varieties including, tortoiseshell, chocolate, black, blue, lilac, chocolate etc. He is really

amazing cat. Believe it or not, he is very intelligent cat. He can respond my voice commands.

He is really funny as well as my friends get a joke. I love him so much as I loves my mother.

The Advantage and Disadvantage of Nuclear Power

is generated by using Uranium which is a metal mined in variyes part of the world. The first large scale of nuclear power station is opened at Calder Hall in Cumbria, England in 1956. Some military

ships and submarines has nuclear plant for powering the engine. Nuclear power produce around 11%

of the world’s energy. It causes no pollution as we what get when burning fossil fuels. The advantages

of nuclear plant are as follow:

It costs about the same coal, so it is not expensive to make

It does not produce smoke or carbon dioxide, so it does not contribute to the greenhouse

effect

A small amount of it cans produce a huge amount of energy

produces small amount of waste

Material process

It is reliable. On the other hand, nuclear power is very dangers. It must be sealed up and

buried for many years to allow the radioactivity to extinct.

Although it is reliable, a lot of money has to be spent on safety becose if it does not, a serious

nuclear accident can happen.

People are increasingly concerned about this matter. In the 1990s, nuclear power is the fastest

growing source of power in many parts of the wold.

SHOULD CHILDREN WEAR HATS AT SCHOOL?

I believe that you should always wear a hat at school when you are playing outside , to keep from

getting sunburn .

Firstly, if you don't wear a hat, you will get sunburn and a sunburn is painful.

Secondly, sunburn could lead to skin cancer. Sunburn can lead to health problems later in life. Many

older people suffer from skin cancer which can kill them.

In my opinion all school students should wear hats.
